so i actually got to my comic store yesterday. After not being there for over a month, i had a stack..not quite a foot but close to 8-10 inches.
after the normal pleasantries, the owner was very cool abt me putting a couple of books back i had changed my mind on to which i thanked him. We went on to chat abt how he ordered the comics for the store. He said most stores take their subscription # & add a couple of books. As a result the store don't take into account hot books, like Rocket Raccoon and have sold out of them. In contrast he reads comics & orders what he likes. he pays attention to the market so had maybe just under a foot of rocket's in addition to two variants left.
i really appreciate the flexibility of being able to pick out books a couple of days before new comic day & still getting the 20% off everything
-
Argh...I went to 3 LCSs here and couldn't grab a variant :(
-
i was amazed at how many my local store had...
it's worth the drive of an hr & a half
btw did folks hear

DC Cancelling 13 Titles
With March Issues
Published: 12/16/2014 03:26am
Green Lantern Corps
With the release of its March solicitations, DC has revealed that it will cancel 13 titles this spring, shipping the last issues in March before the two-month Convergence event that will cover the period of DC’s move to California (see "DC Announces Remaining 'Convergence' Titles”). That removes a quarter of the DC Universe titles, clearing the decks for a major retooling of the line when the regular DCU titles return in June.
The titles represent a surprisingly wide range of sales, from Star Spangled War Stories Featuring G.I. Zombie, which sold only 7,546 copies in November, to Green Lantern Corps, which sold 34,109. The thirteen titles, with their November sell-in numbers to comic stores (see "Top 300 Comics Actual--November"), are:
34,109 Green Lantern Corps
30,907 Arkham Manor
25,654 Red Lanterns
21,377 Secret Origins
19,709 World's Finest
16,840 Swamp Thing
15,859 Aquaman and the Others
15,795 Batwoman
15,681 Green Lantern: New Guardians
15,097 Trinity of Sin
11,416 Klarion
9,350 Infinity Man and the Forever People
7,546 Star-Spangled War Stories Featuring G.I. Zombie

http://comicbook.com/2014/12/17/all-50-free-comic-book-day-comics-revealed/
-
Love free comic book day but in my town its the only time there is a huge line for the comic book store. I will be waiting in line at 6am, it will be pre-comic con line training haha.
-
I actually tend to avoid free comic book day because the stores get too crowded. But that's just me being anti-social. :P
-
Yeah the crowds do suck but the while waiting in line I usually get into deep comic/videogame/toy chat with the others in line. Comic book fans are usually fantastic people to talk to and it's great when I can talk about a series and the other person will understand me haha. I'm also pretty anti-social but the LCS is where i turn into a chatty Cathy.
On another note I am giving my Godson (5 months old) his first comic for X-mas! It's a SDCC Batman #32 9.8 CGC SS by Greg and scott. Let the brainwashing into comics begin.

a while ago i got my first short box. I've always had long boxes & dreaded moving those. I gotta say, the short box is nice- i think i'll only get those in the future.
they might even help with the alphabetizing.... yeah, over 4K books & it's a mess
-
Short boxes are the way to go. They are more sturdy in my opinion and easier to find places to store them.
For alphabetizing, marathon a TV show and sort away.
I put a few boards at the ends of each box so the books don't bend from the uneven inside and no finger dents in the books where the handles are.
-
I'm in the process of switching over to short boxes, and have to go though 12 long ones. Going to *properly* inventory what I have...definitely longer than a weekend job :)
-
Yeah, I had to laught when Chris c wrote to binge watch a show.
I'd have to binge watch a super long show, like all 10 seasons of supernatural to my job done. ;)
But that might say something abt my organizing skills!
Hey, how many short boxes per long box? I was thinking it'd be nice to move out of the old long boxes too and it'd sure help the alphabetizing process. I've got at least 12 long boxes to sort. Wondering how many short boxes to order.
Also, and this is the biggest what to do with the complete crap books? Do you keep them in your collection or seperate them? Cuz I could keep them in the long boxes....idk
I'm talking independent mid 90's crap
-
Hey, how many short boxes per long box?
If I remember right, a short box is about 100 books when all are bagged and boarded and a long box is 175.
Also, and this is the biggest what to do with the complete crap books? Do you keep them in your collection or seperate them? Cuz I could keep them in the long boxes....idk
I'm talking independent mid 90's crap
I would alphabetize by publisher to keep all the 90's cheese grouped together nicely.
Yeah, I had to laught when Chris c wrote to binge watch a show.
I marathon a lot.
-
I actually alphabetize by title, independent of publisher. Makes it much easier to find stuff.
That being said, I keep My CGC graded books ordered by title, separate from the non-graded. And that's only cause the casing makes it larger than a regular book for the box.
-
i may start with 20 short boxes
it's $88.36 from amazon &
$106 from www.bagsunlimited.com
$91 from BCW
$85 from http://www.comicsupply.com/ (free shipping & a 15% off coupon)
anyone know of another source?
Michael, i think Chris C was just talking abt organizing by publisher the mid 90's crap
i binge watch too but even i can't binge watch that much of one show ;)

Try to get polyethylene bags if you can, not polypropylene. I'll post more on it tomorrow.
Update: Polypropylene bags make the tape get stickier over time and when you take the comic out of the bag and the tape flips back and hits the book, it is more likely to damage the book.
Polyethylene bags are better for this problem. They are cloudier so the book does not look as good through the bag, but I feel it is worth it to not worsen the tape problem.
-
Or.... you could do what I do and not use the tape at all... I have had far too many accidents with tape to bother with it any longer, and really, it serves no purpose. It's not like the bag is vacuum sealed and it's a problem if air gets in.

i've been using 2mil mylar.....
-
I have found that Scotch tape generally tears bags less than off name brands.
As for FCBD, last year was crazy! Over an hour wait to get in and the Hip Hop Family Tree by Ed Piskor was gone. Fortunately, Fantagraphics sent me a copy last month in an order.
Alyssa, did you ever read Trees?

Tip: If you aren't following @AgentM on Twitter (and WTH aren't you??), start...he tweets out quick hits on redemption codes for free comics from marvel.com (among other things)...
If you're quick enough, you can snag it.

So far, I have the Skottie Young variant on order. Also ordered the photo/movie variant. Today, I picked up the Hastings variant (color version-there is also a black and white). Since I bought a Star Wars #1, they gave me a Skottie Young litho-so cool!

i finally got to my lcs & discovered they didn't get any of the skotties :(
anyone watching the comiclink auctions?..... i'm found some great deals on silver age books. i won a couple of Stranko's

For those unfamiliar with the Hero Initiative:
http://www.heroinitiative.org/spage.asp?p=69&ti=What+We+Do
"What We Do
In late 2000, a consortium of comic publishers came up with the idea to create a financial safety net for comic creators, much in the same fashion that exists in almost any other trade from plumbing to pottery. By March of 2001, the federal government approved The Hero Initiative as a publicly supported not-for-profit corporation under section 501 (c) (3).
Since its inception, The Hero Initiative (Formerly known as A.C.T.O.R., A Commitment To Our Roots) has had the good fortune to grant over $500,000 to over 50 comic book veterans who have paved the way for those in the industry today.
The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterdays' creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It's a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment."

having those short boxes is brilliant! they've made it so much easier! thx for the encouragement to switch

because the stress abt parking was too much i started mucking with my comic data base program. I use Collectorz, http://www.collectorz.com/comic/
one of the issues i've had in the past is pulling comics for con's. We get a list of artist & writers via the con then i have to go through my collection & pull books to get signed. in the past this was a pain because there wasn't an easy way to find the creative team abt a comic.
last night i was noodling around & found a feature in the program that allows a column for writer & artist.

that is a neat site, i'll have to dive into it while pulling books for WC & SE:nyc

It's my Holy Grail site.
I like the search by creator and you can view what they penciled, wrote, did covers for, and there's a way to sort a creator's work chronologically.
They don't keep up with all the variants, but I don't really get those anyway.

I am a sucker for variants. They usually have a lower print run which will make them worth more.
-
I hate variants.
And by hate, I mean I love the art, but hate the prices. $45 for the Campbell Star Wars is a good example.
-
I liked variants when they were just that...one-offs, relatively rare, not an expected part of a specific book's release...
Now...almost all books have some form of variant somewhere...
Not that that's a bad thing...but it's just overkill of late...IMHO

The one downside to it is if stores buy too many copies and are left sitting on too much inventory to get the variants. Hopefully, most stores learned their lessons from the 90's False Variant Value Boom.
-
Example (IMHO) of Variant-Overkill...
Great cover...

Too many variants (http://www.comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=14625 (http://www.comicbookdb.com/issue.php?ID=14625))
-
The major difference between variants in the 90s and now is that in the 90s it was gold-holo-foil-glow in the dark-embossed-platinum nonsense of which Spiderman 1 is a great example. Most of today's variants provide artists with jobs and the consumer with really cool art. Art is one of the reasons why I'll buy a variant or back issue for that matter. Though some issues really overdo it, it's up to the collector to decide. $45 for a comic is really nothing. I'm eyeing TWD #19 this year and that will break the bank.
On another note, I want to share one of my favorite artists: Graham Ingles. He was an EC artist and worked on Haunt of Fear, Vault of Horror and Tales from the Crypt. You can see his influence on Bernie Wrightson's art: (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bookpalace.com%2Facatalog%2FSuckerBaitInta-L.jpg&hash=fcde1ca224fde0b6fa09b2f76213fd5e2ea96e0d)

If everything goes to plan, we're going to be doing a comic focused google plus hangout on Sept 13- there's a special guest confirmed but not announced to speak to grading process. we'd also like to get a uber fan who's gotten a lot of stuff signed or two who have had experience getting signatures. Or any other ideas for a twist on the comic & convention show?
Anyone interested?
-
My Birthday came 5 days early- my Daredevil 168, first appearance of Electra, signed by the creator Frank Miller just came back from grading, an amazing 9.6
I am THRILLED!
I picked it up at Boston CC for $200, it looked to be a 8.5 or better. It should double in price.
I had it signed at NYCC & pressed before slabbing. I just got notification for shipping.

What do you do with it? I assume it's sealed so you don't read it. Do you display it or just keep it for prosperity?

Juuuust a 1st issue of some series called Daredevil. No big deal, (at least that's what I keep repeating to myself to get the envy at bay ;) )

oh....my..well... can i guess that you don't have many collections? ;)
I have an extensive comic collection, with a lot of DareDevils. I've been collecting/buy comics since i young and actually have a bunch from my early early years.
for this particular comic, i will be displaying it in my dark computer room along with my other prized items. If you're interested check out one of the google + hangouts i do with [member=10]ukdeejay[/member] http://friendsofcc.com/category/hangout/

Oh, ok. Nice display of collection items in the video. I have a long box from the early 90s that I keep moving with me just for prosperity, figure I'll let the girls read them when they're older. Never thought about displaying them or getting them graded or signed.

Comics from the early 90's are hard, most are crap but some may have value and be worth slabbing
You might want to chat with one of us before letting the kiddos have at them ;)

That's awesome! Years ago I tried to complete the Silver Surfer volume 2 from 1987 up to issue 75. I think I have something like 60 of them. They are not in very good condition and I don't have no. 1. I also have every comic (some graphic novels) that Dust from the X-Men has appeared in up to 2013. It was fun hunting them down, searching every comic book shop in Toronto. My dream comics are 1966 Fantastic Four 48-50 (The Galactus Trilogy/1st app Silver Surfer), 1963 The X-Men 1, 1941 All-Star Comics 8 (1st app Wonder Woman), and 1955 Detective Comics 255 (1st app Martian Manhunter). The FF 48-50 are the only ones that are realistic since they are widely available and under a thousand.

It's been a long time since I went to Free Comic Book Day and decided to take my daughter. I remember there just being 3-4 comics in a bag, all free, but this was many years ago and in the US. We went to the closest comic book store here in Canada, 20 minutes away, and you get one comic free, but any extra were 50 cents each. Is this normal now or just a Canada thing? I assume they had to pay import duties even for free comics and maybe it lets them distribute comics to more people.

The stores pay for the comics, so as this day has become more popular and they get bigger crowds, I have seen a few limit the numbers customers can take.

I had work all day, so I missed most of my shop's festivities, but I got there in time to pick up some Nova and Moon Girl and the Devil Dinosaur! They're titles I've been meaning to peek into for a little while, and with the discounts being offered, I couldn't say no!
-
We (daughter and I) loved Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, especially how the latest issue ended.
Devil Dinosaur #1 was the first comic I ever bought. I was 6 and my parents apparently weren't too happy about the title, but it had a a big awesome dino on the cover, I had 35 cents, (and I probably pitched something of a fit.)

New York, NY-September 16, 2016- Raining down from the outer reaches of the galaxy, rising up from the depths of the ocean, and emerging from the recesses of the Earth — monsters are staking their claim to the planet. The only thing standing in their destructive path: the united Super Heroes of the Marvel Universe.
It’s all hands on deck, as the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, Inhumans and Champions, joined by a who’s who of solo stars — Deadpool, Spider-Man, Black Panther — battle an endless deluge of monsters and the mysterious force that controls them. Will the combined might of the Marvel Super Heroes be enough to save the day? Or will they need help to arrive from the unlikeliest of places?
Marvel Comics is excited to present MONSTERS UNLEASHED coming January 2017.

When I started reading, there were 2 compendiums. Then I looked and realized that to get compendium 3, I'd have to wait for 2 years! That's when iIstarted buying the volumes (the 6 issues per book ones on the sale you linked). I've been reading via the volumes ever since.

SECRET EMPIRE Unites the Marvel Universe this May!
The Avengers, X-Men, Defenders, Inhumans, Champions, and more galvanize as one
New York, NY-February 10, 2017 - What if your greatest ally was secretly your greatest enemy? Beginning May 3rd, prepare for Marvel Comics’ SECRET EMPIRE! Blockbuster creators Nick Spencer, Steve McNiven, Andrea Sorrentino and Leinil Yu are ready to challenge the entire Marvel Universe as they unite the Avengers, X-Men, Defenders, Champions, Inhumans, Spider-Man, and more, as an unwavering front against the SECRET EMPIRE!
The Marvel Universe is under siege from within! Due to the manipulations of the Red Skull, Captain America, secretly a true believer in the cause of Hydra, uses the trust and respect he has gained over the years to a position where he can enacts Hydra’s ideals against the Marvel Universe and it’s up to all heroes to unite against one of the greatest challenges they have ever faced.
Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso said, “SECRET EMPIRE is the rallying cry for all the heroes -- Avengers, Guardians, Defenders, X-Men, Spider-Man, Deadpool — to put aside their differences and unify in the defense of the Marvel Universe."
That unification is what will be needed to confront Steve Rogers since all the heroes close to Cap have been be influenced by him over the years. SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said, "Our heroes will be tested both physically and morally against one of the most trusted heroes of all time and that's the aspect of this story our characters face and what forces them to come together."
Forged together as one - the Avengers, the Champions, the Defenders, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Inhumans, the X-Men, and more will be tested as Hydra’s grip tightens around the Marvel Universe and SECRET EMPIRE unleashes a horde of villains against those who have sworn to protect the innocent. Be here as SECRET EMPIRE launches this May from Nick Spencer, Steve McNiven and Marvel Comics.

I'm not familiar with the iOS apps but I think the app is more important than the format, whether or not it allows you to open and read files when offline. I tend to prefer pdf since I know I'll be able to read them on anything but your reading app may have certain functions (frame-to-frame, zoom, etc) on cbr and cbz (which are probably just archives of JPEGs) but not on pdf. cbr/cbz might be better if storage space is an issue.
For text-only docs, epub readers can reformat the text flow for your device where pdf won't.

HUMBLE BUNDLE Offering 2017 EISNER AWARD NOMINEES Packs
https://www.newsarama.com/34806-humble-bundle-offering-2017-eisner-award-nominees-packs.html
Press Release
Humble Bundle and the comics industry's finest publishers are teaming up for a new digital comics bundle, sampling the 2017 Eisner Award nominees to support charity!
The Humble Comics Bundle: Eisner Nominees 2017 Showcase features over $198 of original content from some of the most creative writers and artists in comics. Customers will receive titles nominated for Best New Series, Best Anthology, Best Short Story, Best Single Issue, and more. The Humble Comics Bundle: Eisner Nominees 2017 Showcase gives access to some of the industry's best work of the year.
Named for acclaimed comics creator Will Eisner, the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are considered the “Oscars” of the comics industry. William Erwin "Will" Eisner was one of the earliest cartoonists to work in American comics. He is noted for his experiments with content and form; he popularized the term "graphic novel" and was an early contributor to formal comics studies. The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are presented under the auspices of Comic-Con International. In 2017 they celebrate their 29th year of highlighting the best publications and creators in comics and graphic novels.
The bundle includes standout titles from publishers Fantagraphics, Baltic Comics, Drawn & Quarterly, Dark Horse Comics, Big Planet Comics & Retrofit Comics, Archie Comics, IDW Publishing, Valiant Comics, Black Mask Studios, Kilgore Books & Comics, and Silver Sprocket.
As with all Humble Bundles, customers choose how their purchase dollars are allocated, between the publishers, charities, and Humble Bundle. The Humble Comics Bundle: Eisner Nominees 2017 Showcase supports the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Hero Initiative.

I wish they were more consistent about saying who signed it. I just asked them on twitter, I'm assuming both have signed it but would be good to know for certain.
Heavy Metal is still trying to get rid of old inventory, now down to 70% off.
http://shop.heavymetal.com/shm/index.php (http://shop.heavymetal.com/shm/index.php)
There are assorted comics, books, toys and back issues. (Be careful if you browse, it's Heavy Metal so not everything is SFW.) It also means the remaining Geller and Kirby Lord of Light posters that debuted at SDCC a few years ago are down to $60 from the original $200, which finally puts them into a comfortable price point for me. I grabbed the 2 planetary control room ones.

Sorry :) but I know what you mean, I had to grab some a couple of the 70s issues.

Sorry for the late update, but my copy just arrived to day and it is signed by both.

There is also an SDCC exclusive version at the Image booth, but all of the Snyder and Lemire signings are wristbanded. Snyder could be tricky since his Batman books are so popular, (I can never predict these things though.)

I hate to post this this close to SDCC but Folio Society is having a rare sale on some of their (always beautiful) books.

These ones are super expensive, but I like to go through them and drool. "Tales from the 1001 Nights" with Salvador DalÃ’s watercolors is down to $1055 :(
http://www.foliosociety.com/category/10093/le-sale2017 (http://www.foliosociety.com/category/10093/le-sale2017)
If nothing else FS tends to publish interesting stuff, so if you see a title you don't know in a field that you are interested in it's probably worth checking out in a more affordable edition.

It's like a window into the writing process- a lot of these were published here first before then went into print-
if anyone is selling a collection of old pulp books- i'm in the market <yes, one more thing i am collecting ;) >

I love those old pulps, don't really collect them in any organized way but pick them up whenever I find them cheap. I always find it fun to read something in the manner it was first published, plus all of the other things like book and film reviews, even the ads.
If you have any of the early 60s Science Fantasy books (why are so many of the journal titles so search engine unfriendly?) look for early Moorcock/Elric issues, he's at SVCC this year.

Maybe mortality is a motivator to get people moving, because ever since the whole phrase “X things to do before you go” came out, there have been book series based on the idea, movies driven by it, and countless category-based listicles around it. Well, our team has bundled – you guessed it - 100 of the greatest graphic novels from DC’s library and put them on deep discount. Pick up a copy of WATCHMEN, MISTER MIRACLE, ALL-STAR SUPERMAN or 97 other classic graphic novels this week up to 80% of the regular price. But act fast, this sale only lasts until September 16th.
