When the infamous Comics Code was adopted back in the 1950s, it was presented not as censorship but as a model of social responsibility for all communications media. The Code itself is now long dead, but the impulse to regulate in the name of doing good is taking new forms across the arts today, from social media and virtual worlds to what we write, draw, buy, and wear. Comic Book Legal Defense Fund interim director Jeff Trexler, communications director Jordan Smith, comics futurist Rob Salkowitz, and Fashion Law Institute founder professor Susan Scafidi discuss the tension between freedom of expression and standards of decency in today’s multi-platform world.

Aaron Humphrey (University of Adelaide) examines what may be the earliest known autobiographical graphic novel, created during World War I by C. A “crisis” comic event, such as Crisis on Infinite Earths, either resets an overly burdened narrative continuity or wipes it from existence, thereby allowing the use of the characters for a different narrative, or corporate, space. Likewise, comic book publishers suffer their own crises in which they are also liquidated and their characters acquired or in which they are allowed to reset/reboot. Attorneys James Thompson,Daniel Barer (Pollak, Vida, and Barer), and Marc Greenberg (Golden Gate University of Law) examine the impact such bankruptcy filings have had on both the industry and the narrative universes produced by that industry and how readers process the crisis events.

These luminaries have over 150 credits to their name, and 150 years of experience and stories from the history of animation, a history over which they had a major influence and impact. Eisner Hall of Famer Bill Sienkiewicz ( Elektra: Assassin, Voodoo Child: The Illustrated Legend of Jimi Hendrix), Grammy winner John Dolmayan (System of a Down, Torpedo Comics), and Inkpot winner Kevin Eastman ( Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) talk about the intersection of music and comics through their collaborations. Kevin and John worked on the movie soundtrack for Heavy Metal 2000. Bill painted variant covers of 300 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for Torpedo Comics. Don McLeod (author of Gorilla Tales, mime/movement creator for film, commercials, and TV) and Adam Meir (professional mime, actor, and living statue) share movement techniques used to make cosplay characters come to life.
