There have been a couple of recently released studies both related to age.  Led by covid, the life expectancy in the US has dropped by about 3 years compared to before the pandemic.  Also a covid infection, even in someone who has mild symptoms, can age organs by 3-4 years.

Covid is much worst than the flu.  It's much more contagious.  It's much more deadly.  It has much more long term impact.  It's not a simple binary of living or dying.  It can leave you disabled for the long term.  Even the living or dying isn't that clear cut.  Since the weeks and months after someone "recovers" from covid is fraught with danger.  Deaths that happen during that time aren't reported as covid deaths.  It's called medium covid.

Well my wife tested positive for COVID Friday evening (while I was at our HS football game).  Haven't seen her/talked to her face-to-face since Friday morning, and she's isolated herself in our bedroom/bathroom.  I get to sleep on the couch for the foreseeable future, something I've never had to do in nearly 24 years of marriage  :P  My 8 year old and I are still testing negative so that's exciting.
I guess I'm not totally shocked one of us has gotten it between me teaching HS band and her incredibly active w/karate (she attends classes 6 days a week typically) but this is a bit of a bummer.  She seems to be doing OK, definitely symptomatic w/achiness, some coughing, massive fatigue (though I think everyone our age has significant fatigue 24/7?).  No fever at least.  She had just gotten her 3rd Booster dose on Tuesday, and she could've been sick as early as Wed. when she started feeling "weird" and we presumed it was just side effects from the booster shot.

Hopefully she's back up & going in the next week, and hopefully my son and I can continue to not get COVID from her (or anyone else)  :-[

I got covid a couple weeks ago and took Paxlovid.  So I tested positive on a Thursday, felt yucky for a few days, felt better and tested negative on Wednesday, and started feeling yucky again and tested positive on Friday.  So it seems that I got one of the Paxlovid rebound cases.  I tested this morning and still very positive, so assuming the negative wasn't accurate I've been positive at least 12 days.

Wow that's unfortunate; hope you feel better soon!  The craziest thing about this ordeal so far is that my wife got a teleconference with her doctor on a Sunday morning (!); he did not recommend Paxlovid at this time, and also reassured her that her having asthma wouldn't be a detriment: he told her that folks w/asthma have actually statistically faired better than average.

My MIL was hospitalized with covid back before vaccines.  She has COPD and gets winded quickly.  After her week in the hospital, with all the meds they were throwing at it then, her breathing improved!  So hopefully something good will come from all this with future treatments for breathing issues.

Interesting, My doctor was the opposite and gave me the drugs.  My brother and niece, also asthmatics in a different state got the drugs.

My cousin lives near me, high risk her doctor said no (she has Guillain Barre Syndrome) but her non-high-risk husband got it.

I will say I have noted most friends in red states got it, high-risk or not.

Yeah, to be honest we haven't even considered needing to go to the hospital or anything at this time.  Seems like it's definitely not fun, but she doesn't seem to be experiencing any breathing issues (though her doc did prescribe an inhaler just in case)

I am glad to hear it isn't an extreme case.

That sounds like Paxlovid rebound.  People do test negative and think they are clear.  Only to test positive again.  That's the rebound.  So that negative test is halftime.

Paxlovid is most effective for people over 65.  As one study put it, "Paxlovid Has Little To No Benefit For Younger Adults With Covid".

I hope they already know.  Since the data Pfizer used to get the EUA involved people 60 and over.

Quote
Patients were adults 18 years of age and older with a prespecified risk factor for progression to severe disease or were 60 years and older regardless of prespecified chronic medical conditions.

Doctors write prescriptions even when they don't think it'll do much good just to pacify people.  A classic example of that is prescribing antibiotics for a viral infection.  That doesn't help with the viral infection but it does make people feel better.  It's estimated that a third of the antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary.  A covid apropos example of that were the hydroxychloroquine prescriptions for covid.

That's exactly what my wife's doctor told her: because 1) she seems to have pretty mild symptoms (the worst being fatigue/exhaustion) and 2) "you're not old enough for it to be effective" which of course put my wife immediately in a better mood to hear she's essentially too young for something  :P

FWIW, on Day 5 since her positive test she still tested positive this am, with a very slight 'bar' on the test.  My 8 year old and I are still negative, and beside a very occasional cough and exhaustion my wife is in good shape (a bit stir-crazy, actually): so I'm taking all of this as a low-key win.  She said she's too tired to feel like working, and her calendar is clear for today, so she'll likely continue to just rest; she can stay home entirely until next Monday, though she only goes into her office twice a week anyway.  I suspect if she has meetings on her calendar for Thursday or Friday she'll likely attend them.
