NYCC 2023 announced a star studded line up of guests today.  Other than the special guests, I haven't seen a list for SDCC.  I'm hoping it's just as good.

SDCC has never really advertised their Hollywood guests in all the years I’ve gone, at least as special guests. That is usually based on what stars Hollywood studios bring for promotion. There are a few booths that do Pay Per Meet for celebrities, but again SDCC has never really followed into this mode of marketing. They’ve only highlighted a few Hollywood types, like Brent Spiner at Special edition SDCC.

I do like how NYCC shows their guests like the design of music festival poster.

Edit: Also lol they got Babish showing up at this thing. Awesome! I love his cooking videos but still lol!

It's still early.  Unless they're paying these guests a lot of money, there's no guarantee all these guests will appear.

I find it curious they advertise these guests BEFORE their badge sale.  You buy the badge with the expectation that you'll get to see a specific guest, and the guest cancels due to "scheduling conflict", and you can't get a refund, because NYCC doesn't offer refunds.

Just my take....

I think this sentiment, mixed with this sentiment:

almost certainly tells else everything we need to know:
* CCI knows it has zero worries selling badges: I mean, this convention has been sold out now for 8+ months going into the mid-July event - long before anyone has any clue what celebrities, panels, etc. will be there.  CCI doesn't announce anything but their own featured guests (almost all comic industry people), until way last minute when all the panels are scheduled.
* whomever runs NYCC (unlike CCI, a for-profit convention where they HAVE to be focused on profit margins and growth and what-not) has to sell tickets, maybe has to generate a lot of hype far in advance to ensure a high turn-out.  Maybe more-so with the WGA and potential SAG strikes, they felt a need to announce this to calm potential attendees.

A thing I love (and sometimes get frustrated by) SDCC is that it's a non-profit event.  They don't care about making huge profits, just running a solvent event that keeps the organization financially viable.

Apples to Oranges

Yep.  As someone else said, NYCC is a "for profit" convention.  They even sell VIP tickets and if they can hype the convention as star-studded, more people will try to buy those tickets.  The celebrities also get to sell autographs and photographs for whatever price they are willing to set and some of those prices are rather high.

Everyone already has their badges for SDCC that isn't driven by what stars will be in attendance.  There are no VIP badges and no paid autographs/photo ops.

Yes there is.  That's what happens up in sails.

That may be, but NYCC is at a whole different level than SDCC.  Also, SDCC has the rule that the celeb must sign your program for free if you ask them.  No such rule at NYCC.

(To be honest, I've never participated in autographs at SDCC. I was told it wasn't allowed, but the person must have been referring to the rule I mentioned.)

Celebrities are required to sign one official publication for free but for signing other things or a photo OP they can and do charge.  That's why they are there.  Having worked up there, I've seen it with my own eyes.  They do a brisk business.

"Attendees: Please note that Autograph Area Participants may charge for their autograph in the Autograph Area as long as the Participants work with the Autograph Area Coordinator to ensure that all rules are followed and that all of the required paperwork is prepared in advance."

Actually, a lot of people were praising NYCC for announcing guests before the badge sale this time around instead of buying a badge and hoping for the best.

Do they still do the lottery system for autographs and exclusives at sdcc?

Where they give you like 20 entries and you divide them up on what you'd like.

I know they only started doing that in like 2017 or 2018. Wasn't sure if they kept it around.

Also as someone who attends both Cons, NYCC really did not have that much star power that year, relative to how many shows and stars the Con had produced in previous years... I think they did this to let the fans know the ticket would be worth the price of admission, which last year, I honestly found myself questioning a lot
