While i'm sure there are nicer and therefor more expensive restaurants in NY close to the con, the skyline diner was decent last year.
http://www.skylightdinerny.com/
perhaps either Thursday, Friday or Saturday after the con?

Here is a link to the RSVP Spreadsheet for anyone who would like to add themselves (or just check it out):

Sounds great to me...don't have a preference on the day.
-
I'm down for it on Saturday at least.
-
It looks like a good place. I will be fine any day.
-
Saturday for me.
-
I like to join in on one of days.
-
poll added so to make it easier for us
-
Oops. I just realized that I voted all nights when I can't do Sunday. But I suppose that's better than just voting for one day?
-
i've reset the parameters of the poll. you should be able to change your vote & vote up to 3 times in the poll

Okay, done. Thank you!

I wouldn't mind meeting up during the con if there was something. I tried meeting up at SDCC last year but couldn't find anyone :(
-
yikes, which meet up was that? :o
-
It was the place by the hotel solamar. If I remember right it was an eggs place. I was wearing my FOCCI lanyard all weekend but didn't even find anyone else wearing these things
Represent people lol

it was up the stairs on your left, there prob was 50 people there.

I was wearing my FOCCI lanyard all weekend but didn't even find anyone else wearing these things
If it helps, last year I ran into people wearing the lanyards in the elevator at the MMM, and at Nerd HQ, lining up for a panel. But the year before, I didn't see anyone else with a FoCCI lanyard.
-
Any night is fine.
-
I'm in! Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
-
ok-
i am not good at organizing these meet ups- do we have any takers to step up & get folks organized?
I can do the sunday nite post con, meet up at the skyline diner but frankly that's about all i can do.
while a meet up out side the con is fun. it's also nice to meet up at the con, say noon at the starbucks <---example. These really can be organized until the sched comes out tho
-
I would, but I have no idea about the area. Are there any restaurants close by (walking distance from convention center) that would take a group?
-
So.... no one else has volunteered, so I guess it's up to me. You get what you pay for, guys, so I'll do my best, but you've been warned... >:D
Okay, given that this poll was done before we knew about the TWD thing on Friday night, I am guessing that Saturday night is the best for a meetup (barring other major events being announced).
Keep in mind that I've visited NYC a number of times as a tourist, but I'm not at all familiar with this area. I have studied Google maps, reviews, pictures, and looked on Opentable. From what I can tell, anyplace that would take reservations/group bookings is likely going to be pricey. The best option I came up with was the IGK (International Gourmet Kitchen).
http://www.igknyc.com/ (http://www.igknyc.com/)
They have a wide variety of food (soup/salad/sandwich, burgers, pasta, Mexican, Asian) at a reasonable price, and you can order in advance online. So we could just meet up there, with everyone ordering on their own.
The location is on 35th, near 8th, so it's a straight shot walk down 35th from Javitz (about 14 minutes) and is very close to Penn Station.
Would this work for people?
-

I believe Alyssa said she was hosting a Sunday night dinner at the Skyline Diner.
I can do the sunday nite post con, meet up at the skyline diner but frankly that's about all i can do.
So this would be in addition to that.
If people are fine with just Sunday night, that's OK too.
-
I'm out of the country late September until October 6th or I would absolutely love to host/coordinate a dinner. Sorry!
We would be available Saturday and/or Sunday for dinner, and we will have 3 or 4 to add to the group.
What about a drink and TWD discussion after the premier on Friday? If anyone is interested I can look into it.

Hi, I know this area because I used to work about a block from there. IGK isn't what you might suspect. It's more of a lunch place. They have different stations for different types of food(sandwiches, custom salads, past, etc.) and I think they have a big buffet where you pay by the weight of the food you pick. Most people get take-out to carry back to their offices or they sit at a counter to eat. We have tons of places like this in the city that cater to lunch crowds. They aren't really "sit down and socialize" places and this isn't either.
If you want me to suggest something, I can case out the area because I don't get there as often as I used to.

Hmmm, I checked and they're open until 11 pm, and say that they have an entire floor of 'dining area' upstairs. But given that I've never been there, I'll defer to your knowledge.
This was my entire reluctance to host something: that I did not know the area or the places there. If you have anotehr suggestion, I would appreciate it.
TardisMom, I don't drink, but I was thinking of hitting a place with slices of 'authentic New York pizza' on the way back to my hotel after the TWD premiere... ;)

Also, in terms of Saturday night, the New York Rangers have their home opener at Madison Square Garden that night, so I imagine places around there will be extra packed that night before 7:00.

TJ, I'm up for this but what time were you thinking of meeting? I have to be in Times Square (42nd St. and 7th Ave.) by 9:30pm-9:45pm that night.

At this point I'm not sure about the time. I was going to wait until the schedule was released to firm that up, since we don't know what panels might be going on when.
-
those restaurants can be for either nite
i thought the two Italian places took reservations
i had hoped the nycc residents would chime in.... i basically looked for a place which served unique food & drinks between msg & port authority
but, i am very adventurous when it comes to food- the more unique the better for me ;)
and don't go with the live bug jokes- i've heard them all
votes can be changed-- and a person can vote 3 times

I did the Tavolo restaurant on Opentable, but they didn't have any reservations available (even for 2 people) on Saturday night between 4:45 pm and 9:00 pm, so I ruled it out because of that. But that doesn't mean it might not work for Friday.

TJ, "drinks" for me is usually iced tea or soda. Pizza sounds great!
I vote for Tavolo Hell's Kitchen for Friday night drinks and pizza. Maybe Daredevil will stop by ;)

The dining areas of these places usually are a room with cafeteria style tables and chairs. The suggestion for John's pizzeria is a good one. I think most people would like that. I've never been to Tavola, but it has a good reputation.
You would think that as a local, I'd have tons of suggestions, but my fear is that what I consider "regular priced", out-of-towners consider "pricey".
Since people are suggesting the Times Square area, another Times Square area space people might like is Guy Fieri's restaurant:
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=guy+fieri%27s+nyc
There are tons of good restaurants on 9th Avenue.
Five Napkin Burger

Hey gang! Let me know when the meet up is happening and I will try to swing by if I am not too busy at NYCC. Here are a couple of recommendations for you. Both great places within walking distance of the Javits. Awesome food at both spots and usually plenty of room.
Clyde Fraziers
http://arkrestaurants.com/clydefraziers/
Southern Hospitality BBQ
http://www.southernhospitalitybbq.com/
Hope that helps!
-
Do you guys want to try John's Pizzeria on Friday after TWD Premiere and Five Napkin Burger on Saturday?
-
I go vote with BBQ that Brian suggested (he knows his BBQ) on Friday after the TWD event
-
I'm good with that.

i'm cool with Italian one nite, burgers the next & BBQ the next <in any order> ;)
i'd like to do something on Thursday more casual so folks could meet up & get to know each other irl. one of the burger place might be good for that
the closest restaurant to MSG for Fri nite, Brian's suggestion, http://arkrestaurants.com/clydefraziers/#menus
looks like they've got a varied menu with beer <yes, i do like a beer or two <wink>
Brian's suggestion again for BBQ for Saturday
skyline Dinner- very casual for Sun
-
Okay, so let's formalize this...
Thursday - informal gathering (5 Napkin Burger?)
Friday (after TWD Premiere) - Clyde Fraziers
Saturday - Southern Hospitality BBQ
Sunday - Skyline Diner
Does this work for everyone?
Does anyone know if any of these restaurants take group reservations/online orders? I'd hate to be waiting an hour+ to be seated.
-
we might want to swap clive & the bbq place as mllny said, the bbq place is closer to the MSG & Clyde is closer to the Javitz
for those of you who are from nyc- the reason we're doing all these meet ups is since we're from out of town & it's good to have a destination & an idea of where we're gonna eat
after all remember, we are hyper-planners....
-
Okay, sorry, I thought you said Clive was close to MSG. Okay, let's revise...

So now we need a count for each day. For us:
Thursday - 0
Friday - 4
Saturday - 4
Sunday - 3
If we get an initial idea for each day we can make a reservations and then update them later.
TJ, if you want pizza for lunch one day (schedule permitting) I'm in :)
-
For now I am in for Friday and Sunday...
-
I'm in for Saturday for sure.
I hope this doesn't sound bad, however, I only want to join Friday if I get into TWD premier. I'd be too jealous to sit there and listen to the event details after missing out.
-

i suspect you'll be going- just a gut feeling tho
for me tentatively
Thursday - 0 +2 <i think> we can change up the place depending on who's attending....<wink>
Friday - 4 +1
Saturday - 4 +2 <i think>
Sunday - 3 +2
-
Tentatively I'm in for all days. I suspect most of us will want to see the programming schedule before doing a 'hard' confirmation. But if we get tentative numbers, I can try to make reservations.

I made a quick and dirty spreadsheet to keep track of RSVPs. And as TJ said, tentative numbers is what we need. We can firm things up much closer to NYCC.
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

OK, Saturday is definitely out for me as I mistakingly thought a New York Super Week event was taking place on Thursday (the dingbats put the day before the month just like how they do it in Europe), that NYSW event takes place at 8pm and another NYSW event that I'm going to that night takes place at 10pm.
I'm definitely in Thursday and Friday. Sunday is a question mark.
UPDATE 10/2/15: I'm available all nights but I have to leave Saturday by 9pm.
-
I will target Friday.
-
Okay, making a slight adjustment...
Thursday - informal gathering (Piiza)
Friday (after TWD Premiere) - Southern Hospitality BBQ
Saturday - Clyde Frazier's
Sunday - Skyline Diner
-
thx tj
i just couldn't do burgers when there's so many excellent choices- i'm going to call & see if i can get a res at this place http://www.johnspizzerianyc.com/Times-Square-Menu/Pizza

Looks like a fun place! And I agree, if we're in New York, we need some New York pizza!

Don't forget to eat it with a fork >:D

A good list. The only day I have a conflict right now is Friday because I'm going to Brooklyn for the Thrilling Adventure Hour show. But, other things may pop up between now and then.
Questions: When will the actual times be set? What will be the target date for everyone getting their RSVP in to make reservations?

I think we'll be trying to make placeholder reservations shortly, but we'll set firm times once the programming schedule is out.

I know my friends and I are definitely interested for a meet up after the con; I know at least 4-5 ( or maybe more of my friends) will want to go.
I know Friday after TWD event will be good for us; and definitely Saturday and Sunday as well.
-
Yay the NYC contingent has arrived ;)
i have to admit i am looking forward to seeing you all!
-
Now that I will be attending NYCC thanks to some of you lovely folks, I would love to attend at least one of these as well! Not sure specifically which ones I'll be able to go to with my new work schedule, but I'm good for at least Saturday (hopefully I'll have a better idea of which other days I'll be in the city in the coming weeks).
-
Okay, some people contacted me because they really wanted to go to the Brazilian steakhouse (Churrascaria Platforma). This is a really nice place, but it's definitely on the more expensive side. Looking at the rsvps, it seemed like Thursday would be the best night for it. So there has been a change to the restaurant plan.
Thursday - informal gathering - Churrascaria Platforma
http://plataformaonline.com/ (http://plataformaonline.com/)
Friday (after TWD Premiere) - Southern Hospitality BBQ
http://www.southernhospitalitybbq.com/ (http://www.southernhospitalitybbq.com/)

Sunday - Skylight Diner
http://www.skylightdinerny.com/ (http://www.skylightdinerny.com/)
Other than times to meet, I'm pretty sure this is the plan. Really. No more changes *crosses fingers*
-
Potentially me + 1 for the post-Walking Dead dinner on Friday.
-
Everyone who is interested in doing a dinner meetup, please RSVP using the spreadsheet, so we can try to make reservations.
Thanks!

Thanks TJ et al for organizing. I will update the doc later.

i'll be doing in another round of lanyards soon. to be delivered before nycc
hopfully i'll have a pic & will start taking orders in a couple of days
-
Have reservation been made yet? Would love to meet up with fellow FoCCIers after TWD premiere. heh Didnt want to add to the Google Spreadsheet yet until confirmed. Countdown to NYCC!
-
No, reservations have not been made. I was waiting for the full program schedule to be released... although it looks like that might be a few more weeks. :(
-
Okay, I've been in contact with Southern Hospitality BBQ regarding Friday night, after the TWD event at MSG. Because our group is large (20-25 people) they consider us a group event. The big problem with this is that they either want us to order off of an event menu ($45-$55 pp, plus tax and tip and drinks) or I would have to guarantee a minimum food & beverage purchase of $1,250 for the entire group (before tax and tip).
I don't mind guaranteeing the group, as long as people are actually going to come and buy dinner and not leave me holding the bag to make up the extra cost. If we have 20 people show up, that's a cost of $62.50 per person, which seems like a lot, even including drinks. If 25 people show up, it's $50 per person, which is more reasonable, but still a lot.
I'm feeling really uncomfortable with guaranteeing this, but I wanted to know what others thought before giving up on the place entirely. FWIW, I also have a request in with John's Pizzeria for a group event, so they may be a viable alternative. I'm still waiting to hear from them.
So... what do you guys think?
-
I can conceive of 25 people coming.
I don't think we will know this before the WD event tix are settled tho
Imo, let's wait on this for a day or 5 before deciding. Maybe asking for a deposit from folks who want to attend? I'd be ok holding the money.
-
Just for clarification: is the dinner Friday before or after TWD event? When I RSVP'ed today, it said that the event was supposed to be over around 11pm.
My initial thoughts are that since I have to catch a train back home to CT by 1am, I'd probably skip out on Southern Hospitality if we did it afterwards, since I'd be paying $50+ to only be there for like half an hour (plus, the website says that the place closes at 1 anyways, so we might not have too long if the event lasts all the way until 11). If we did it before TWD, I'd definitely still consider going (which might be difficult to do without the full schedule). Or if we did it afterwards, but somewhere that will be cheaper ;)
EDIT: TJ, I now see that you wrote in your initial post that we intend to to the dinner *after* TWD event. It's been a long day...
-
As an FYI, I somehow missed the existence of the spreadsheet and just put in my avails. I hope it's not too late. I put in for Thursday and Saturday.
BTW--the Churrascaria is a great choice. Save your appetite. It's "all you can eat".
-
11 pm? I didn't see that. Where was it mentioned?
I saw that it started at 6:30, and the episode is 90 minutes (although that's with commercials) so I figured it would be over about 8 pm, then I budgeted 2 hours for delays + panel. So I had been thinking 10 pm.
But if it's really 11 pm, then I'm thinking even more about bowing out myself. I'm not sure I'd want to eat that late.
I heard back from John's Pizzeria. They can take our group at 8 pm on Saturday with a $15 minimum per person. I am planning to book that unless anyone has objections?

The 11pm approximate ending time was mentioned in the FAQs on the RSVP. I believe you can view it without already RSVP-ing, so I will try linking it here:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
I'm not sure if it will actually run that late, but I'm guessing we should probably plan on it just to be safe.
Also, I have no objections to the time and price for John's Pizzeria on Saturday! :)
-
I am also thinking we would get out by 10pm but I would defer to anything official from AMC for the official time. Dinner will have to be around that time but hey it's NYC so I consider this normal for any event. Would it make sense to make pizza Friday and SH Saturday?
-
The problem with the high cost of Southern Hospitality still exists, even if we move to Saturday. I don't think enough people would be willing to commit to that high a cost, which is why I thought John's would be more reasonable.
-
Not sure if this came up before but I would like to recommend Hill Country as an alternative. I have eaten there a number of times and there should be enough space to accommodate a group.
http://www.hillcountryny.com
I can reach out to them and help coordination efforts as time allows.
-
I have 4 of the attendees for Friday and 3 for Saturday. I am the only one of us of drinking age, so I would have a hard time with the cost of Southern Hospitality. Just my 2 cents. Pizza sounds great, though!
-
My plus one for Friday is vegan. They just wanted to meet the other forum members. They would not be up for the cost

Even though I have no skin in this game because Friday night is out for me, I second that Hill Country is a great place. I vaguely remember that you pay based on how much you order.
Another suggestion that is right across the street from MSG is Stout. It's a popular after-work joint with a lot of space: http://www.msg.stoutnyc.com/
I think it's a tad less expensive than Southern Hospitality.
-
Okay, I told Southern Hospitality no. Between the cost and the likely late hour, I figured that we wouldn't have enough people showing up to cover the minimum. As it is, if TWD isn't out until 11 pm, I don't think I'll be participating at all. I've changed the spreadsheet to reflect that it will now be drinks after the premiere.
I think I will accept the John's Pizzeria offer for $15 per person (ordering off of the regular menu.). Unless there are any objections, I am going to book it for Saturday night at 8 pm.

Thanks for all your work, TJ! Drinks on Friday and John's Pizzeria on Saturday both sound great!
Here is a link to the RSVP Spreadsheet for anyone who would like to add themselves (or just check it out):

If you want to go to a very good bar without leaving Penn Station, I highly recommend my hang-out Tracks Grill. It's on the Long Island Railroad level, has of the longest bars in NYC, and even serves good food if anyone is looking for a snack.
I have drunk and eaten there more times than I can count. I'm an LIRR commuter and I've missed trains to hang out there. It's crowded during rush hour, but you guys would be going when the crowds thin out. I would be there after the con if I weren't going to Brooklyn that night.

I passed by this place many times but only had drinks there a few times. A few of my friends like it.

Okay, I made an 8 pm group reservation at John's Pizzeria on Saturday, October 10. The reservation is for 15 people, but we can expand it if more people commit to attend. There is a minimum charge of $15 per person plus 18% gratuity, but you can order anything you like off of the menu (including drinks).
-
Perfect timing!
Thanks tj
Me and Lewis are so there!

For drinks on Friday night should we plan to go with Track's Bar & Grill? dkd recommended it and DrWho_42 seconded. I don't know of any of places to suggest and this sounds like a fun authentic NYC experience.
According to the RSVP form we have about 20 people going. If no one has any objections I'll call tomorrow and see about a reservation. Here is Track's website: http://www.tracksbargrill.com/home
and here is the RSVP spreadsheet for any updates:

Sounds good to me. Thank you for taking the lead

I called Track's and made a reservation. Or maybe more of a warning to expect us ;). I spoke with Bruce, the owner, and he is expecting about 20 of us at 10:30 after TWD Premier. So we're set!
-
the menu looks great & the fact that they have a pint of dark beer in a cover photo shows good prospects for decent beer. I'm also guessing it's sub-drinking age friendly ;) so i don't have to worry abt the Lewis factor.

That's a good point, I'm the only above 21 member of my crew (WAY above 21;)). I just called and they said it's no problem. Phew!

I'm willing to pass on a few of my years to someone else if they need it. However, I refuse to take them back!

Tardis Mom, can you include me for the Friday meet up after the Walking Dead event?
And I am confirming I'm available for Sunday evening as well.
I won't be available for anything Saturday night, I'm going to a couple of New York Super Week events then.
UPDATE 10/2/15: I'm available Saturday night, but only until 9pm.

I hope it goes well. You'll be in the back room, which doesn't have the ambience of the bar itself, but, I guess some people wouldn't want to just have drinks at the bar.

We did it with a group from work and one of our people was vegetarian and wasn't disappointed. The salad bar is plentiful.

Same here with a friend who is a pescatarian. She had the salad bar only and was happy.

LOL, glad to make you look! Yep, it's a person who doesn't eat 'meat', but will eat fish/seafood.

I don't know if it was all posted in one place, so it is good to have a reminder. Thanks for suggesting it.
Thursday at Plataforma Churrascaria - 7 pm (reservation is for 8 people, we currently have 5-6 confirmed, so room for a couple more)
Saturday at John's Pizzeria - 8 pm (reservation is for 15 people, we currently have 11-16 planning to attend, $15 minimum order per person, including drinks)
-
I will be able to be attend the meet up after WD event on Friday and on the meet up on Sunday.
I may also be at the Colony & Mr. Robot panel at the Hammerstein, before going to Walking Dead event.
-
We should team up on the mr robot.....

Great! I added you to the google doc.
We should team up on the mr robot.....
I'd like to see Mr. Robot, too. We will have time to get to TWD by 6:30? It looks like Hammerstein is really close on the map. My daughter wants to see the Adventure Time earlier that day.
-
We should team up on the mr robot.....
Speaking about this I think we should add this dimension to the Lone Coordination initiative.
I will send out an update post later today based on what I saw regarding lines for The Ballroom.

So what time does TWD premiere start?

6:30pm

6:30pm
That may be when the doors open, but my invitation says that the actual screening starts at 7:30 and there is a panel afterwards.

You are correct doors open at 6:30 event starts at 7:30
-
The email I got yesterday says the premiere screening starts at 8pm. Another source says the panel will begin at 9:15pm. That makes sense consider the season premiere is 90 minutes with tv commercials. The panel will likely last about a hour. So we probably won't be leaving until the 10pm hour.

Nope, not at all!

First, with TWD not ending until 11 are we still on for the meet up? I am, but just want to gauge interest.
TJ, my daughter wAnts to attend the cosplay show on Saturday evening so I'm not sure how many we will have at pizza. Or we may be a bit late. Sorry for being flaky.
-
TardisMom, you can certainly arrive a bit late. We're a little close to the edge as far as the 15 person minimum goes, because Boukenred has 5 people, but that's uncertain (has a question mark). The main reason I'm concerned about that is because there is a minimum spend as well ($15 per person).
Boukenred, can you confirm how many will be in your group?

Me and the wife are still planning on Friday night. May just be a drink before we turn in - depends on energy level.

I'm still in. 1 or 2 drinks depending how awake I am :)

What time are the reservations for?
And street addresses?
I'll put all that into the first post so folks can find it easy :)
We can also put it into the Google doc
Yes in hyper plan mode

Times and addresses added for Thursday and Saturday.

Confirming that I will be there for the meet ups on both Friday after TWD (most likely with my friend as well) and Saturday for pizza. Yay, so excited! :D

For Friday: Tracks Bar & Grill is on the LIRR level of Penn Station, adjacent to the ticket windows. Time is immediately following the event, so 11 p.m. Or so.
Sorry, can't update spreadsheet on iPad.

To add - Penn station is underneath MSG. Look for signs pointing to LIRR or Long Island Railroad. Tracks is located right next to McDonalds.

I know it's late but my party of three would like to join the fun at John's Pizza on Saturday at 8:00 PM. I'm on my IPad at the airport waiting for my flight so I will update the spreadsheet when I get into NY. :)

Anyone coming to dinner on Thursday at Churrascaria Plataforma, or on Saturday at John's Pizzeria, the reservations are under Alyssa's name.
-
I know this is last minute, but is anyone hanging out anywhere tonight (Wednesday)? I get out of work after 6PM and I'm not going to rush home due to not having to wake up as early as usual. I saw there's an Arrow charity event downtown, but I'm not sure about going to that.
I figure a lot of people may be in town. I work at 53rd and 7th Avenue and commute through Penn Station.
EDITED: Decided to go to Arrow event. Nice bar.

Bummed out, kept scanning the crowds on Saturday as I was walking around and didn't see a FoCCer lanyard...what were you all hiding? :)

I made to the meet-up on Friday. About a dozen of us were there, including Alyssa.
I've saw at Boukered on the Marvel Booth too.
I will be tonight's meet-up at the Skyline dinner around 6pm or so.

I made it on Thursday and last night. Great to meet everyone and put faces to the names.

I would like to echo my thanks to the meet up organizers. I went on Friday and Saturday and had a great time! Can't wait for more FoCC events in the future 8)

Many thanks to everyone who came! We had 16 on Friday and 13 on Saturday, great attendance! It is great to meet new people and see some familiar faces as well. See you again at SDCC
