One of my favorite parts of the hotel process last year was watching all of the hotels pop in and out right up to the last day.  It was really astonishing what showed up.  I liked everyone helping each other second by second sometimes.  Of course now my hair is completely grey, but it was a bit exhilarating!
It is 2024, and I am still asking...where's my flyin' car??!! @fannishmarcia

^ So true! I was able to snag HBF for some people in my group in the middle of June. Who knows if it will be the same, but now seems like a good time to remind first-timers that the Hotel Sale never really ends, so don't get discouraged if you strike out in the initial sale.

I'm glad that some people are able to find great hotels later on, but that would drive me crazy. The anxiety/panic around Hotelpocalypse is bad enough (and it's so LATE usually! for any other trip I'd have booked a hotel months earlier) that I can't imagine keeping it going for weeks/months until I could trade up to something I liked.

For me, I have to get the best placement or trade I can in the first couple days after Hotelpocalypse, and then make peace with it. Otherwise I'll just be miserable. Yet another reason why live booking would be such a boon for worriers like me - even if I didn't get something I really wanted, at least I'd KNOW there was nothing better likely to become available (I know there will still be a few good cancellations, but substantially less) and I'd at least get to "pick my poison" based on exact location/amenities/etc.

It indeed is a miserable experience, just not a futile one. The times I had to monitor that dang OnPeak site waiting for random inventory to pop up were days that I got absolutely no work done. Last year was even more difficult, IIRC the days after refund deadlines were the days when unicorn hotels popped into the inventory, so people had to resort to juggling a time/loss/cost scenario while furiously trying to fill in a hotel form.

Really hoping a new system is at least being thought about at this point. Even just... like... maybe a post-it note with "Hotel Sale Update" scribbled on it stuck somewhere on a whiteboard in the SDCC offices.

New system proposal: FoCC members get first dibs.  All other attendees must fight to the death.   >:D

Anyone know if HBF is keeping their word on mini-fridges in every room this year? It will greatly increase my desire to stay there if so, haha.

Did they say last year that they'd move towards having mini fridges in every room? Because it's usually a crapshoot, unless you get in early, to get a fridge in your room when you stay there. It would be nice if they did, finally, but the past 5-6 year I've been there, it's always been up in the air.

an employee at the front desk mentioned them getting mini fridges in all rooms as well last year. and said it should happen this year, but wasn't sure if it would happen before this year's SDCC.

Early bird is now two whole months later than for SDCC 2018. Do we think this means changes, or just CCI's usual complete inconsistency of dates?

If the hotel booking process isn't going to materially improve, I wish it was at least always around the same time(s) of year. :(

Honestly I'd bet it's just inconsistency.  I've learned not to rely on previous year's dates as a predictor for when things will happen this year.

SDCC is consistently inconsistent when it comes to Early Bird lmfao. That works in my favor this year because the longer they wait, the less likely that Hotelpocalypse will be on Mardi Gras day.

Works for me because of funds.  I've mentioned like 4 times that I'm dependent on tax refund for hotel, but I'm going to a different con that's earlier that I need to pay for too.  So now I'm hoping it coincides with my March bonus LMAO.  Please SDCC work specifically for MY financial schedule here.  Do me a solid.

Wasn't Hotelpocalypse in February once? I miss that, I loved getting it over with.

But if Mardi Gras is a bad day for you I hope it isn't then either.
