If we ask for multiple rooms, does that limit our chances of getting anything?  Let's say I ask for 5 rooms.  Would OnPeak give out two rooms if that's all that's available?  Or, would they give out nothing because there isn't a block of 5 rooms to dole out?

We're not sure, but I *think* the consensus is that OnPeak accommodates your entire request or nothing at all. So if there were only 2 rooms left at your requested hotels, you would get either a "closest" hotel not on your list, or no hotel at all, depending on your selections.

Just curious, how many of you have been waitlisted in the past and actually got a hotel through the waitlist (and not through getting  a hotel from a friend or finding one yourself through their website)?

I've always selected the "add me to waitlist" box if I get nothing, and have never received an email for it.

my understanding is if there wasn't 5 rooms at that hotel they would not give you that hotel but go to your next choice

I did two years ago IIRC. Picked up The Sophia.

I got in at 9:05 this year. Since I'll be taking my 11-year-old nephew, my strategy was to skip the obvious Gaslamp and Convention Center hotels and go for the ones on the trolley line near the train depot. But I got nothing. And my lack of contribution aced me out of the exchange this year, so I'll be sitting by my computer when the cancellations start posting. Blah.

Has anybody tried to call OnPeak today and successfully spoken to someone?  Because I keep trying and after the automated message it just drops the call.  I wouldn't be remotely surprised to find out they're just not taking calls today (because OnPeak) but thought I'd check to see if anyone has had more success than me.

They can 'PM' you.  It's the speech bubble icon on the left next to the person avatar.

My second year of SDCC, I tried the hotelpocalypse for the first time and got waitlisted. I kept refreshing the hotel page every chance I got and was able to get the DoubleTree Downtown for all 4 nights. Almost killed myself running to get my wallet. Like others have said, people still have a chance to get a hotel downtown but you have to be vigilant.

if you are looking along the trolley line, the wait list might work out for you.

I have two monitors at work and would refresh about 40 times a day. Also, I would get notifications on my phone when someone posted on this thread which during those times basically meant that it was someone saying "MGH is up" or something like that. It helps if you want  a downtown hotel. Even though I already have a room, I know I'll be checking regular just to post on here to help people :D
