Originally a syndicated Sunday newspaper comic insert, Will Eisner's The Spirit is still acclaimed for its great artwork, imaginative splash pages, unforgettable characters, and attention-grabbing storytelling. Hear Danny Fingeroth (Spider-Man group editor, comics historian), Denis Kitchen (publisher, writer, comix cartoonist), Sergio Aragonés (cartoonist, MAD magazine, Groo), Jeff Smith (cartoonist, Bone, RASL), Joe Staton (cartoonist, Dick Tracy) and, on videotape, Jules Feiffer (Pulitzer Prize and Oscar-winning cartoonist and screenwriter) talk about the impact of The Spirit on their own careers. Hear about their favorite Spirit adventures and learn why Will Eisner's original Spirit stories are still in print today with new comics appearing monthly.

Costume Designers Guild members Ann Foley (costume designer, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Kim Adams (costume designer, Stranger Things, Halt and Catch Fire), Ivy Thaide (assistant costume designer, How to Get Away with Murder, The Mindy Project), Jill O'Hanneson (costume designer, Preacher), Kiersten Ronning (costume designer, Supergirl), Marlene Stewart (costume designer, Oblivion, Tropic Thunder), Ruth Carter (costume designer, Black Panther, Serenity), and Samantha Kuester (costume designer, Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return) talk about the process of designing costumes for screen. The designers will also answer questions from the audience.

Warner Archive's Monsters From Hell

Warner Archive Collection (WAC), Trailers From Hell and Famous Monsters of Filmland join forces to spotlight some of the most beloved (and sometimes overlooked) monster/dinosaur films of the past 70 years. Revel in WAC's high-definition remastering of cult classics ranging from When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, The Valley of Gwangi, Demon Seed, and From Hell It Came to soon-to-be-released on Blu-ray surprises. Trailers From Hell film gurus Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider, Tales of Halloween) join WAC podcasters Matthew Patterson and D. W. Ferranti will delve deep into insights, stories, and peeks behind the scenes of these fan favorites. Gary Miereanu moderates the proceedings.

The fantastic yet twisted world created in the HBO hit Westworld presents numerous legal questions and conundrums. Join the all-star posse of Ninth Circuit Justice John B. Owens, co-creator and executive producer (and Harvard Law graduate) Lisa Joy, Professor Betsy Rosenblatt, and other legal minds as they discuss the top legal questions posed in the groundbreaking show, from what corporate duties have been breached by Dr. Ford and the rest of the staff, to managing the park's liability obligations, to the "human" rights of robots (or absence thereof), to just who owns the intellectual property created by the robot Hosts. (This program is approved for one credit of California MCLE.)

Women Rocking Hollywood: Female Directors Changing the Faces of Film and Television

Wonder Woman broke all records in Hollywood for a film helmed by a female director. Now what? While there's still a long way to go before women, who make up 51% of the population, are represented proportionately behind the camera, shows like Jessica Jones, Queen Sugar, and The Leftovers are making a huge difference by committing to the inclusion of female directors. This panel focuses on the incredibly talented, successful women who are expanding opportunities for women in film, who have made noise and are winning awards with their work on both the big and small screens. Written by Ed Neumeier, who crafted the screenplay for the original Starship Troopers, Traitor of Mars serves as a direct storyline sequel to the live-action, 1997 movie. Fans will hear directly from filmmakers, including director Shinji Aramaki, co-director Masaru Matsumoto, and producer Joseph Chou, and franchise star Casper Van Dien as they debut never-before-seen footage and discuss the return of iconic fan-favorite characters Johnny Rico and Dizzy Flores, all ahead of the film’s fall release. Political activist and blogger Rena Marrocco (The Liberal Diva) hosts a viewing of a few epic battle scenes and talks to elected officials, including San Diego City Councilmember David Alvarez, Oceanside City Councilmember Esther Sanchez, California State Treasurer John Chiang, California State Assembly Member Nathan Fletcher, and Mayor Racquel Vasquez (Lemon Grove), about what it would take to repair the damage done if such battles happened in real life. Topics will include procedures, cost, time and legislative fallout.

Comic-Con How-To: Comics and Other Geek Items for the Vision Impaired

Joshua Loya is a martial artist, public speaker, and professional adventurer who has taken it upon himself to help others craft compelling stories. In his youth, combat sports and athletics were not generally available to him because he was at very high risk for losing his eyesight. Joshua found solace in comics and genre fiction, despite eventually losing his eyesight and pursuing martial arts full-time. Scott Brick is an American actor, writer, and award-winning narrator of over 600 audiobooks. He has narrated books for a number of high-profile authors, including Michael Crichton, Frank Herbert, and Isaac Asimov.

Ladies of the Legions, A Women's Guide to Star Wars Costuming

The Ladies of the Legions discuss different costume options for women and challenges and solutions for issues such as choosing costumes, customization and fit, crossplay costume options, physical issues for women in costume, and support and costume groups for women. Panelists offer introductions to various costume clubs, including the 501st Legion (Lesley Farquhar, Dawn Bright, and Anastasia Hunter), Rebel Legion (Rachel Williams and Lisa Curtis Saunders), and the Mandalorian Mercs (Carrie Ann Caranci and Kristina Schlosser). Panelists will talk about the roles new media play between their readers and the industries and communities they serve, varying levels of informality versus classic ideas of professionalism, show-specific outlets versus general news sites, moving from hobbyist to being a professional, and more.

How do you create and sustain a business that caters to the geek lifestyle without exploiting the very people to whom you provide services? Join this panel of entrepreneurs whose businesses cater to a predominantly nerdy or geeky clientele: Matthew Arevalo (Loot Crate), Audrey Kearns (Geek Girl Authority), Janelle Badali (Badali Jewelry), David Nett (Nerdstrong Gym), and Lauren Matesic (Castle Corsetry). Panelists will discuss how these businesses started, how they sustain their service to their clientele and compete with big conglomerates looking to capitalize on the geek marketplace, and how they sell goods and market services to a community seeking geeky authenticity. Moderated by Brian Ward (The Arkham Sessions, Shout! Factory).

From the heroics of Hulk Hogan to the anti-heroics of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and the villainy of Ric Flair, this panel explores the parallels in character development and storyline advancement between these outrageous forms. Featuring Rik Offenberger (FirstComicsNews.com), Francis Szyskowski (The Massacre Twins), Scott Lost (The 2nd Shift), Michael Kingston (Headlocked), Flobo Boyce (The Indelible Silverstreek), and Jonathan Bowles (Wrestle Crate).
