They showed Ghostbusters Afterlife during the panel today… I feel bad for the people behind me who bailed in line because they thought it would just be the panel.

Did they show the whole movie?  If so, what did you think.

So.... I went into Saturday with very low expectations and... I actually had a good time.  Without any panels or exclusives hanging over my head, I was able to browse and spend time in smaller booths.  Artist Alley got a bit crowded in the afternoon when Scott Snyder showed up and there were a few jerks (namely the catwoman cosplayer who kept cracking her whip while in a line), but otherwise a good way to wade back into con life.

I think that number is misleading, since they only sold single day badges.

I went Saturday, wound up bumping into a ticket vendor/reseller (why people thought that they'd need to go through a reseller this year, I don't really know, but anyway...) at the hotel and he said that there was only 35K tickets sold for Saturday.  Down from what's normally 80K.  That's a *big* difference.

The con for me had a very..."2nd tier" vibe: Half the artists in AA, the exhibit hall was obviously down vendors (especially when you don't see the big hitters in comics and such), while at times it got a little tough to walk up and down an aisle, overall the # of peeps on the floor that day was definitely less. And then the lack of panels (for me at least): Marvel's Cup o' Joe/State of the union talk is one I always look forward to...the lack of any of those panels from those companies was almost glaring.  On the bright side, it felt good to not have to jostle w/peeps the entire time on the EH floor.

But, I think RP did a great job in the logistics of it.  I was totally prepared for a $#!7show of a line to get my vax-band: nope.  Walk up, show phone, get band, the end.  Easy peasy.  I would say, 95% of the folks I saw were wearing a mask, and not only if they were eating/drinking. I did read an article that RP was very much enforcing the rules, to the point of kicking out a vendor.  So kudos to RP for doing their job.  That helped w/my con experience this Saturday.

This was a great litmus test for a con during these crazy times.  Now we'll see what SDCCSE does.

The question to be asked is how do they count attendees.  150,000 would be more than SDCC in July.  I'm pretty sure NYCC is NOT bigger than SDCC.  I don't think they go by each individual.  I think they just count attendees per each day.
On the plus side, this is positive spin, and I'm in favor of that.

I thought NYCC had always claimed to be bigger than SDCC.

I will say Sunday felt like a normal con, it was packed.  There was even an aisle I didn't go down because it was insanely packed.  Also, they may have sold less but they had less which meant more people were in the same areas.

I agree it was a 2nd tier con, people were very respectful on the mask front.  Fingers crossed that trend continues, though I think the fact that everyone was vaccinated in general shows it was an audience willing to work together to make things safe.

I think NYCC has always counted the number of badges sold.

Which is silly they have them tied to a fan verification account.  It's not hard to get the number of accounts with badges.

Maybe, but I've never seen their proof.  Do they count attendees the same way as SDCC?

If NYCC was bigger, they would sell out just as fast as SDCC (IMO).  Maybe even faster.  That hasn't been the case.  In 2019 (before the pandemic) fri, sat, and sunday sold out, but NOT thursday..

I'm not trying to throw shade on NYCC.  I just think they're trying to spin it that way because they want people to think there's no way NY can be beaten. (I'm a New Yorker.  I know the attitude.  :).  )

Historically except for Thursday, it has sold out, but quantity and quality are two different things.  SDCC has historically brought more things to their show, also it's nicer to go to SD.  So I think the amount of badges is only one factor.

The article says " This year about 150,000 fans attended across the four-day event, compared to about 260,000 fans at the 2019 show, according to the ReedPop event director Kristina Rogers."

Usually, SDCC is 130,000-150,000, so they definitely claim to be larger.

Since no one will say how they count attendees though it's really hard to say which show is actually bigger.   Denver claims to be in the 100K range but doesn't come near to being as crowded as SDCC is.

I think I heard one of the SDCC people at some point say something along the lines of “We count the number of people who bought badges, not the number of badges sold line some people.  If we counted things that way, we’d be much bigger.”  I think there was some implicit shade being thrown at ReedPop.
