That'd be an interesting experiment. If the only way you can get into SDCC is by being an attendee the prior year, what's the half-life of attendance. ie, how long will it take for SDCC attendance to drop by half.

Actually, it kind of used to be that way.... back when pre-registration was on-site. Anyone at the con could just walk up and register for next year's con, at a discount. They had to stop doing that because demand got so high that it was approaching the point where you couldn't go unless you had been the year before. That's when they moved to 2 online sales.

CCI has stated that they don't want to make it 'returning reg only' because they want new blood in the con every year. They want new people to be able to experience the con. At the same time, clearly they value those who have attended before, because they continue to offer returning registration.

Forum Housekeeping:

Added "2020" to the thread title so we can keep track of which year this discussion is attributed to (for future reference down the line, of course).

The also used to go on sale on a random, unannounced date online.  I had done Pre-Registration for most years on-site (it was literally, like, $30-40 for 4-day w/PN if purchased on site).  Years I wouldn't have the cash to Pre-Reg on site and waited for online sales, you had to constantly be checking CCI's website to see if they were up for sale yet.  There were at least three benchmark dates where the prices would go up, so the earlier you bought the cheaper the event.  I'd get home from work, and think, "Oh; maybe I'll check CCI's site to see if badges are for sale yet" and one day they would be: with no fanfare or announcement.

Simpler times...

Datum: I received my pro-selection email last night, and I sent my application the week of the deadline ("first come, first reviewed"). They may have a stack of Maybes to evaluate, but they're finishing the big part of the process.

So if they didn't sell out on-site, they wouldn't have badges for sale right after the con?

Just curious.

As far as I recall with the exception of the last year they sold on site, when they had moved sales to a hotel ballroom rather than Sails (it was literally right by where you picked up your badge, so you could buy your badge and walk to far side of badge-pickup to buy next year's), there was never any thought of it selling out.  I suspect at best the last few years they might've had a "cap," and they definitely had a cap the last year: they actually had TV screens that where once you got inside the ballroom you could track how much of each days' inventory was left at any given time (they sold out of each days' inventory within about 90 minutes each day that last year IIRC).  The other years they'd be on sale, and then the website would just start to sell them at a later date: not right after the Con.  IIRC, many years they wouldn't go live until after New Years.

There really wasn't a huge crush of "OMG I _HAVE_ to buy next year's badges right now!"  It felt more like a nice convenience, and for me, a local who doesn't have to worry about finances of airfare or hotels, it was a great cost-savings to get it early.  They stopped selling next-year's badges maybe a year or two after Comic-Con sold out in advance for the first time (goofy trivia: the first year it completely sold out in advance you could buy Sunday badges up to Saturday early afternoon, as my wife did - I think that might've been 2006 IIRC but I may be mistaken).

Yup. Buying next year's badges was pretty much always one of the last things I did on Sunday. So 3-4pm rolls around, I'm like, hey, might as well buy badges for next year.

Regarding the TV screens showing badge inventory, I have a screencap of it: https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=218.msg200929#msg200929
The thing about that chart is it's reverse from what you expect. As inventory runs low, the indicators go UP, not down. That year, we were one of the last to get 4day + preview. We were lined up at 5:15am in front of Manchester Grand Hyatt (back before crazy overnight lines were a thing). And it was so nerve-wrecking standing in line and watching the inventory dwindle.

My first SDCC was the 2010 one, and I leisurely bought my 2011 badge in the sails, no worries.  It was at the 2011 SDCC, if I recall, that they first capped the numbers of 2012 badges being sold each day.  Many people who tried to get them on the Thursday couldn't.  I and others got in line for 2012 badges the next morning (by the harbor), but they capped out before we even got inside.  Panic!  This led to going out at 4am the next morning to get in the line for 2012 badges (was staying at the Hilton Bayfront, so easy to do) and then we were  successful!  I too remember the screens showing remaining badge availability but I can't remember if it was in the Manchester Hyatt or the Marriott Marquis -leaning towards the Hyatt on this. They didn't sell  any 2013 badges at the 2012 SDCC, and it's been online-only ever since.

Yeah I remember my wife being not-too-happy, because I wanted to be in line around 4/4:30 but the parking garages didn't open until 5.  She was awesome & woke up super early, drove me the 20/25 minutes one-way to drop me off and then drove back home.  I was early enough to get $-day+PN, but it was stressful watching the inventory disappear!  IIRC I bought by badges, walked out, and then walked right into Hall H (LOOPER panel seems to tickle my memory?).
That was also the year that Member ID was first implemented.  People who Pre-Registered were the first to have to make a Member ID (I think there was a temporary one and then we had to create one later?).

2011 was the "missing link" transition year from old-school Comic-Con to the modern way of badge buying
I also remember the line starting earlier and earlier each day, with some people (IIRC) camping out overnight just for badges for next year.

Yes, this is how I remember things too.  Back around 88 and the early 90's I could just walk up to a booth to pre-reg for the next year's con and at most there would be 2 or 3 people ahead of me.  Then in the late 2000's, 2010 (?) there was an actual line... After the first online sale, I knew I had to find a better way.  I'd heard about this group and the rest is history for me.

My first SDCC was 2003. I came on a Saturday, and the line to buy badges went all the way out to Grand Hyatt. We were already in line for about an hour, and according to the staff, it would've been about another three hours to actually get in, but the staff was also saying "if you volunteer for three hours, you get in for free and you get in now", and so we jumped at the opportunity. Volunteer for three hours indoors vs. standing under the sun for three hours was not much of a decision at all. Bonus was we had by far the easiest volunteer job ever... every hour we just had to post new schedules taped to the walls across the con. The rest of the volunteer time we were free to do as we wished.

Same here.  Always went downstairs to buy my budges at the best discounted price for the next year before I left the con on Sunday.  I was happened to be staying at the Manchester the year they switched the system.  After Preview Night, I thought I'd check out to see if anyone was crazy enough to be in line and low & behold there were about 50 people already in line, camping out.  The staff at the Manchester kindly provided me with pillows & blankets and I joined the camp out. In the morning I got through the line quickly enough that I was able to get to the con before they opened the doors.  Ahhh, the good ole' days!

Finally! I can start making plans now that the date has been announced.

I haven't gotten Preview Night in so long that I didn't realize how expensive it was! I was still thinking that it would be $35, but it's $50!.. and then, they add another $7.50 on top of that?!?  :o Good grief!

If they're going to charge that much for an abbreviated day, I hope they decide to open the hall earlier.

Yeah, same here. I'm only missing PN but I'm unsure if I want to pay $50 + $7.50 even if I do end up getting in. That's even more expensive than Sunday.

I believe the increase in cost is to diminish interest. And from what I can see, it is working. I know quite a few people who have decided not to attend PN because it is too expensive, especially since there are other events that occur the same evening.

Noooooo.  Worse day ever.   I will hv to man three logins because one of my daughters will be in a car going out of town and the other one is in a quidditch tournament.  I’m too old to be responsible for three computers.

Greetings all,
I posted this on the Professional thread as well, but wanted to cast a wider net:

I have a friend that is a professional but, due to money circumstances, doesn't want to buy a full $300 badge and is wondering if she can buy a single day during Open Reg. (She received the email today saying she is eligible to participate on the 16th. but not sure that being a professional would allow her to only buy certain days or create some kind of issue with her professional status)

I vaguely recall this being an option, but wanted to pose it to the forum.

Appreciate any feedback!

I believe the increase in cost is to diminish interest. And from what I can see, it is working. I know quite a few people who have decided not to attend PN because it is too expensive, especially since there are other events that occur the same evening.

yeah, exactly, last year didnt got PN and decided to go the coin-op event and I had so much fun, no lines, no running, no exclusives stress, much better way to start the con for me, so much that I'm not trying for PN this year just hoping the event repeats :)

Yes, for pro reg, it is all or nothing $300+ badge. If interested in single days, open reg is the best bet for your friends... unless they win the lottery and get their pro badge comped.

Just open 3 different browsers (e.g. Google Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Opera, etc.). You can open the waiting room in each browser with a different code. You will only have an error if you open different waiting room sessions in the same browser. Different browsers are okay.

Looking at this 2019 post https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=10013.195, no fee was charged for adding Preview Night.  My guess is the $7.50 handling fee per member doesn't mean per transaction, if the fee was already paid during Returning Registration.

From [member=7786]OyaIsMe[/member] post during 2019 Open Reg, no fee charged.

That's correct.  The handling fee is per member ID.  If you already got a badge from returning registration (and therefore paid the handling fee at that time), you won't need to pay the handling fee if you try for additional badges during open registration.

You don't need 3 computers. You can use 3 different browsers on one computer.

And technically you don’t need three browsers. You can set up multiple profiles with Chrome, and each window with a different profile will act as its own browser, with its own settings, bookmarks, extensions, passwords / auto fill-in, and cache.

I have this set up at work so I can be logged into my personal Google account for one profile, and my work Google account in another.

This would certainly make sense, as the charge is for shipping and handling of the member badge, and they should only ship one badge per member.

Last Year I didn't have PN either because it sold out, but I wasn't bummed because I had 4 days, which I was very happy about.

Then, I discovered they were running Captain Marvel (my 3rd time seeing it) and Shazam (My 1st time) at the MMM where I was staying.  That was fun for me.  It wasn't crowded and I could sit and drink coffee and eat a sandwich while watching.

I have 4 days for next year.  I didn't get PN on purpose so I can help out with my buying group.  If our group does great and I get picked and everybody that's looking for PN gets it, I might add it to my badge, but I'm not going to sweat it if I don't.

My mistake, it looks like last year the $7.50 was for people who hadn't gotten badges during returning reg (I was mistaken with my order).  So as others have said, it looks like they only charge you the one $7.50 fee.  Sorry for the confusion!

Actually, they already have it under the badge pricing chart on the "Badge Info" page of their website (as I linked above), but I suppose that would be considered "the fine print."  *laughs* XD

Doesn't hurt to ask them to make it noticeable though...  Probably a good idea, seeing how others might have the same question but couldn't specifically locate the text for reference. ^__^;  (Even I almost missed it!  Ha ha.)

That can't be right... the website says "per member."

Unless that is indeed a new policy they haven't announced yet, or... that person is mistaken and replied incorrectly.  Hm.  Let me try asking and seeing what I get as a response (while referencing the fine print under the badge pricing chart).  Will report back as soon as I hear from them.

EDIT:
I also checked the fine print under the badge pricing chart just now, and it was updated from this (which was the text last night, as of my previous post):

All purchases are subject to a $7.50 handling fee per member.

Indeed, this person was incorrect, and it is, for certain, a one-time fee of $7.50 per member.  If you already paid the fee during the last badge sale, you won't need to do so again.  (Bolded text is my doing for emphasis.)

A bit off topic, but I am a semi-regular on the ComicCon subreddit, and every year around this time is the same, with the same questions of “can I still create an account?” especially from people who know you need an account to participate in the lottery. If you can’t even deal with the 2-3 min needed to register, then SDCC isn’t for you!

Okay, end rant, back to your regularly scheduled freak out about Open Reg!

Assembling and accomplishing all of the tasks it takes to get a group to SDCC for me, is like a part time job. I keep a notebook and a physical file as well as online screenshots, numerous electronic data files, etc. Troll, er, I mean contribute to online groups  :) . I think it is fun, and exhausting at times.  Then comes the reward of the event itself, at which I make time to relax and enjoy the fruits of my labor.  I adore the FoCC, the admins, the mods, the group leaders, the hotel angels...all of it. It gets my fannish heart a pumpin’.  :D

At RR we bought Fri & Sat badges(even though we got in on 2 computers & could have bought all days for all 5 of us! :(). Anyway, so now we have 5 registration codes that we are not using for Open Reg. Am I able to give these codes to another forum member to use? IMHO this is another big advantage to having both returning and open registration before the end of the year. It weeds out people who aren't even thinking about SDCC until spring. This means that those who attend, even the new people, are serious enough about it to make a Member ID and be ready for the sale in the fall.

Over the years I've hit w/all of 'em but Explorer (I don't think I've used Explorer since CCI has gone to their current 'lotto-esque' format)

I've always used Chrome.  Then again, I've never tried any of the others.

I've used the following: Chrome, Firefox, IE, and Edge. I've gotten in on all of them before and they work fine, just turn off any adblock or script blockers. I used Chrome and Firefox in my regular days, but anything for SDCC and I will make the sacrifice of using ie and edge.

Only one I haven't used is Safari before... at least not for SDCC.

I won't rehash what others have said but I want to add that once you get the link for the waiting room, make sure to run the browser check that is included to confirm your setup will work. Also make sure to turn off your screensaver and other power saving tools since you may be sitting in the waiting room for a couple hours.

If you're running an older Mac (OS 10.4, for instance), TenFourFox works just fine. The key point is that the browser has to accept cookies in able to get screen updates every 2 minutes. Just about any PC browser will work, but some unusual or obsolete phone apps might have trouble.

With phones in particular, one key point is that you have to keep internet connectivity. The spinning blue circle does NOT mean that you are connected - the script that runs the circle is on your device; the script to refresh your screen is on the Epic server; and the circle means that a previous refresh was successful. If you lose the connection, it can't refresh your screen (or let you know it can't).  (In other words, your device doesn't ask to be refreshed, it has to be 'pushed' from the server.) One time I disconnected my computer from the internet completely and the circle kept spinning happily. When I hooked back in, everything worked as normal again.

I’ve been giving my newbie friends the rundown on the Open Registration process. They seem fearful and daunted by it all. I guess I didn’t sugarcoat the odds.

Also, I got another friend to make a CCI account, but she ended up making it just AFTER the cutoff. Oh well, she was always lukewarm about going (been trying to convince her for years to come). I was really hoping to have an extra Reg code to use. Darn it.

We've told our friend how hard it is to get a badge, especially during open reg going in all alone, but he scored them last year and then again this year. Doesn't seem all that hard for him. Meanwhile, we nearly got shut out. Literally seconds after we bought our last badges, all badges were sold out. Basically clicked the buy button and then boom. Gone.

Last time i bought comic con tickets it was still a big scramble to get in and get the tickets. So im not too sure on how this whole lottery system works. what happens after we go into the waiting room?  How long after the waiting room closes do we get told if we qualify for tickets? and if we did qualify how long do we usually have to wait to purchase tickets? minutes? hours?
Title: Re: SDCC 2020 Open Registration
Post by: Transmute Jun on November 16, 2019, 07:57:24 AM
People in the waiting room are randomly chosen to enter the buying screen. You won't know that you have been chosen until you are chosen. However, the whole sale takes about an hour (a little less) so you won't have to be sitting there for ages.

The waiting room begins at 8am (so now) and will end at 9am, which is when everyone gets randomly sorted. After that, you'll be waiting in the queue until you get picked to buy badges.

If you get picked, I believe you have 15 minutes to complete your transaction. At the end of the process, you'll get a confirmation code, and you'll get an email after detailing your purchase. Within a few days after that, everyone you bought for will get a barcode that you can use in case you lose your badge. They'll ship your badge to you before the con unless you are international.

REGISTRATION CODES

To help restrict ineligible members from entering the Expo Logic waiting room, Comic-Con requires that you enter your personal registration code to access the waiting room. If you are eligible to participate, the link to the waiting room and your personal registration code have been sent to you via email. They are also available in your Member ID account under the "Registration Info" tab. We encourage you to write it down and keep it handy on the day of Open Registration.

Each registration code is good for one entry into the Expo Logic waiting room. Your registration code will authorize one browser and one device only. Do not share your registration code! If you share your registration code with another person or attempt to enter your registration code on multiple devices or browsers, the new device/browser will be authorized and your old session will expire.

If your family plans to authorize multiple registration codes for entry to the waiting room, you must enter each code on a unique browser or device. Attempting to enter a registration code using multiple browser tabs will confuse the registration process and cause your transaction to fail.

Remember: One browser instance per registration code!

EXPO LOGIC WAITING ROOM

The link to the waiting room will be sent to you via email at least 48 hours prior to the sale. It will also be available in your Member ID account under the "Registration Info" tab at that time.

Do not refresh while you are in the Expo Logic waiting room! The Expo Logic waiting room will automatically refresh every 120 seconds. If the blue circle is spinning, your page is active! Refreshing your browser in the waiting room may cause technical difficulties or remove you from the waiting room.

If at any time you are disconnected from the Expo Logic waiting room, click the waiting room link in your email (or Member ID account) and enter your personal registration code again. You will return to the same random group you were assigned. This only applies to registration codes that were authorized prior to 9:00 AM PST.

Your personal registration code will only authorize one device and one browser to enter the Expo Logic waiting room. If you attempt to enter your registration code on a different device and/or browser, your registration code will authorize the NEW device and your old device and/or browser session will expire. You may not run multiple browser tabs or multiple browser sessions of the waiting room. We strongly recommend that you log in to the waiting room using only the computer and browser you plan to use on the day of the sale.

The Expo Logic landing page will open for registration code entry at 8:00 AM PST on the day of the sale. You do not need to rush to the landing page at 8:00 AM PST! Eligible attendees will have one full hour to enter their registration code and authorize their device/browser to enter the waiting room. Early arrival to the waiting room does not provide any advantage over those who arrive later than you.

Entry to the waiting room does not guarantee you a badge or a registration session. Not all members will be selected for a registration session.

Shortly after 9:00 AM PST, Expo Logic will begin moving groups at random from the waiting room to a registration session. It does not matter what time you entered the waiting room, you may be moved at random to a registration session sometime after 9:00 AM PST. The Expo Logic waiting room will close for entry at 9:00 AM PST. You cannot enter the waiting room after 9:00 AM PST!

REGISTRATION SESSION

If you are selected for a registration session, you will need to enter an eligible Comic-Con Member ID and LAST NAME. Do not enter your Member ID and password.

If your Member ID is currently being used in another session by another member, it will not validate. If your Member ID has already been used to purchase a badge during Open Registration it will not validate.

PURCHASING FOR OTHERS

During Open Registration you may purchase badges for up to THREE people total, yourself included! But remember, no need to buy for yourself! If you’re unable to attend, but still want to help out other hopeful attendees, you can! Simply clear your name from the “Attendee List” and confirm up to three other eligible members. Each individual you are purchasing for must be eligible to participate and they must have their own valid and confirmed Comic-Con Member ID account.

Only Comic-Con Member ID accounts that were created and confirmed prior to November 4, 2019 at 10:30 AM Pacific Standard Time (PST) are eligible to participate in Comic-Con 2020 Open Registration.

You will need the eligible Member ID and last name for all individuals you are purchasing for.
You do not need their Member ID password.
You may not purchase badges for others using your own Comic-Con Member ID.

NEW FOR 2020! Same process, different look! After you input their Member ID and last name, you must confirm each member in your group by clicking the “Click to Confirm” button before moving forward. If your confirmation is successful, the “Confirm” button will turn from red to green.

The Preview Night badge option may only be purchased if you buy a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday badge. Preview Night is not a stand-alone option. As in previous years, if you purchase all four daily badges (Thursday through Sunday) they will be automatically converted to a 4-Day badge. You cannot opt out of consolidation.

Children (age 12 and under) are free with a paying adult. Click here for more information on our Child Badge Policy. https://www.comic-con.org/cci/2020/child-badge-policy

Comic-Con accepts Visa, MasterCard, and American Express only. We do not accept PayPal or other online payment systems. If your debit card has a Visa or MasterCard logo, you will be able to use it for purchase.

BADGE BUYING GROUPS

If you are working in a buying group, make sure that your Member ID is only being used by an authorized participant. If your Member ID is used by someone in your group, and you are unable to use it when selected for a registration session, Comic-Con cannot to assist you after the sale.

It is critical that you only work with a well-organized buying group. Once a Member ID is used in a registration session, it is locked for 15 minutes or until the session is closed. Buying groups can be helpful, but we've seen an increasing number of people get shut out due to disorganized efforts. If you receive the error message above, your Member ID has been used by another participant.

BADGE SELECTION

When you reach the badge selection page, all available inventory will be shown. Badge inventory will not refresh while you are on this page.

If your desired badge type is unavailable, select another type or close your registration session. If you are having trouble validating a Member ID, please review the "Other Important Info" section and make sure that all registrants are eligible to participate in Open Registration.

If you are selected for a registration session, you may purchase badges for up to THREE people total, yourself included.

  • Each individual you are buying for must be eligible to participate and they must have their own valid and confirmed Comic-Con Member ID account.
  • You will need the Member ID and last name for all individuals you are buying for.
  • Only Comic-Con Member ID accounts that were created and confirmed prior to November 4, 2019 at 10:30 AM Pacific Standard Time (PST) are eligible to participate in Comic-Con 2020 Open Registration.
  • You do not need their Member ID password.
  • You may not purchase badges for others using your own Member ID.

PREVIEW NIGHT

The Preview Night badge option may only be purchased if you buy a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday badge OR if you have already purchased a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday badge during Returning Registration. Preview Night is not a stand-alone option. As in previous years, if you purchase all four daily badges (Thursday through Sunday) they will be automatically converted to a 4-Day badge. You cannot opt-out of this consolidation.

When you are ready to purchase your badge, select the "Purchase Badges" button.

AVOID THE BACK BUTTON

Before you leave the badge selection page, you will be asked if you want to continue. Make sure you have selected all of your desired badges before you leave this page.

It is critical that you do not use your browser’s back button during any step of your registration session! If you need to remove a badge selection, you will be given the option on the final review page. Comic-Con cannot guarantee that your Expo Logic registration session will behave as expected if you use your back button during any step of the registration process.

CREDIT CARD INFORMATION

Comic-Con accepts Visa, MasterCard, and American Express only. We do not accept PayPal or any other type of online payment system. If your debit card has a Visa or MasterCard logo, you will be able to use it for purchase.

Make sure that you are entering the address and contact information associated with the credit card holder.

This is not your badge shipping address. All badges will be shipped to the verified shipping address on file in your Comic-Con Member ID account as of May 13, 2020. Your badge shipping address can be found on the "Contact Info" tab. We are unable to deliver badges to an unverified shipping address. The last day to verify the shipping address on your account is May 13, 2020.

We are unable to ship to an international address. Badges for international attendees will be available for onsite pick-up only. If you would like your badge sent to a U.S. address, simply update the shipping address on your account prior to the deadline. If your buyer has an international address, leave the ZIP CODE fields empty.

REMOVING BADGES

You will have a chance to review your entire order on Step 4. If you need to remove a badge, do not hit the back button! Select the "remove" option next to the badge you would like to return to inventory. Once a badge has been returned to inventory, you cannot retrieve it.

Please note that all badge purchases are subject to a $7.50 handling fee, per member. This is a one-time fee. For example, if you purchased a badge during Returning Registration, you will not be charged a handling fee if you purchase a badge during Open Registration.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

When you are ready to complete your purchase, review the Comic-Con Terms and Conditions and type "AGREE" where indicated.

By registering for a paid or complimentary Comic-Con badge you agree not to sell, trade, transfer or share your complimentary code, or badge confirmation. In the event that Comic-Con determines that you have violated this policy, Comic-Con has the right to cancel your badge(s) and keep any money paid by you.

If you cannot attend Comic-Con 2020, you must submit a refund request by May 13, 2020.  All refunds are subject to a 10% processing fee.

THE FINISH LINE!

Congratulations! Your Comic-Con badge purchase is complete.

The buyer will receive an immediate credit card receipt via email, and all members will receive a badge confirmation email within 48 - 72 hours after Open Registration is complete. We encourage you to add [email protected] and [email protected] as an approved/authorized sender to your email account. If you do not receive your badge confirmation within 72 hours, check your SPAM inbox.

If you do not receive your badge confirmation email within that time frame, you will have the ability to resend your own confirmation. This feature is usually enabled a couple weeks after each badge sale. At that time, the Resend Comic-Con Badge Confirmation button will be available under the “Registration Info” tab in your Comic-Con Member ID account.

THE FINE PRINT

While Comic-Con has made every effort to make the badge purchase experience fair for everyone, it is possible that problems outside of our control could result in the system not working as planned. The possibility exists that anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software may aggressively block browser cookies, JavaScript, or other operation of modern web applications. It is also possible that user error, specific hardware problems, local ISP issues, or simply the extremely high level of demand beyond our control may result in your computer and/or browser not behaving as described above. While Comic-Con has done extensive testing, we make no guarantees that your efforts will result in a successful badge purchase regardless of when you enter the process.

As always, we are sincerely grateful for your continued support and interest in our event. We know that purchasing a badge can be a challenge and we are constantly exploring options to improve your online registration experience. We will continue to offer deeply discounted rates for juniors, seniors, and active-duty members of the military, as well as one of the most generous free child badge policies in the comic convention industry.

Not anymore.  They do a charity ebay auction closer to the con date.  That's pretty much the closest thing they have now.

They haven't had resales the past few years, but last year CCI officially auctioned pairs of 4-day badges on eBay to support the museum. On many of them, the price wasn't too bad (like 800 per pair/400 per badge).

I started going in 2015, and i've never seen them do one.

From what I understand there are so few badges, it's not worth it for them to do a sale for returned badges.

SDCC resold badges for like 3-4 years and then decided it wasn't worth it until last year's eBay auctions/Comic-Con Museum fundraiser.

We have threads form just this year you can peruse through.  The initial batches did sell for thousands I recall (each lot is a pair of tickets not just one) but as the con got closer prices were more "manageable" or as manageable as one can be for paying hundreds of dollars.

Edit: Here's hte link to the thread directly.

Our badge group was trying to buy for a friend but it kept coming up with the error "There was an issue when attempting to confirm this Member ID. Please review "Other important information" below and try again of eligible." But nothing else showed on the page. The last name of this person was correct and she even sent me a screen shot of her member ID so it was written correctly but we couldnt get her a badge.

Any ideas why this was?

If she got her memberid last year, only getting PN during Returning Registration would make her ineligible.
But she should check to make sure.

Thanks to [member=7340]OnePromise[/member] , I was able to at least get Sunday badges for two friends of mine (I already had 4day and was trying for PN). Without OnePromse, we would've been completely shut out, even though we had six codes.

Next year I'm definitely joining a buying group. This year really hit home how low the odds are.

were they selling for crazy amounts of monies?

At first they were since no one knew how long it would last, but then it settled down. Near the end it took another uptick but no where near as high as they did initially. In the lull in the middle, they were about the same cost as buying badges during registration if not a little cheaper.

Yeah I was a little taken aback by how awesome the Buying Groups did this year, and especially today.  By my calculations everyone in our group of 60+ who participated (there were one or two who never logged in to the spread sheet) got every badge they wanted with the exception of, like, 6 people who didn't get PN.  It got to a point down the stretch where people would get in w/no one to buy for because everyone in all the FOCC groups seemed set!  Unbelievable effort this year, and the BG leaders did a great job staying on top of everything, and trouble-shooting for us knuckleheads who threw wrenches into the gears at the last minute  :P
I once again had four machines running, some w/multiple browsers/codes running, and none hit.  I'm a Pro this year & everyone else in my family hit gold in the Returning Reg, but I hate when I can't help.  But this Open Reg. I don't feel so bad given how awesome it went for everyone else!

Congratulations to everyone who got what they wanted today: see you in my town in July!  For those who didn't have luck on their side today, keep watching for CCI to auction off badges for charity, or for the CCI Museum: there's still hope!

See you all in the Hotel and Parking lotto fun

Even though it gives me heartburn and heart attacks, I think I enjoy the excitement that comes from not knowing. SDCC wouldn't be half as fun if everything was smooth sailing. Of the badge buying, parking, autograph tickets, Hall H, and hotel...lypse, I think I enjoy the hotel part best, maybe because it's long and drawn out and we have to do all sorts of finagling. In the end, most people get something, even if it's not ideal.

Now, SW Celebration, that's different. I want that one to be smooth.

Hi all, question about browsers.  Do you usually run your code in in IE or Chrome?

Our buying group had an issue in both pre-reg and open reg with IE freezing after the members name was input - but before they could add the other two ID's. It impacted different people in each sale.   The impacted member was then locked of the sale until the frozen session expired time-wise. Only then could someone go back in a purchase a lesser badge for them.   Fortunately we have screen shots of the whole thing including other members trying to buy for that person in the interim.  Obviously we have reported to CCI and hope for a favorable resolution - but I'm wondering if there are any tricks the member can do on their end to unfreeze the session earlier and release the name, (maybe shutting down the computer) and also if its worth it to simply tell our members to use chrome.

Thoughts appreciated.

My first choice is chrome.  This is a different scenario but I was running 4 codes on 3 devices.   I had to run one of the codes on Edge.  I never got in on any of the codes, but the spinning blue circle would freeze up periodically on the Edge browser. It never froze up on the other 3 chrome browsers.

I nearly always used Microsoft Edge, but the last one I used Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, and Chrome. I didn't get in with any of them, so I can't tell you if the browser would glitch. However, I've never had a problem buying with Microsoft Edge.

One thing I did notice...I was using 3 codes, one for myself and two for friends. Mine was on one laptop (chrome) and the other two were on my other (chrome and firefox). My code on the first laptop consistently had the messages refresh first, before the other two. It also got in within 7 minutes while the other two didn't get in at all.

Got the Buyer's Receipt email an hour ago. (My bank usually doesn't show the transaction until a few days later.)  Hopefully barcodes tomorrow.

We had someone in our group that had a similar problem during RetReg. Two different people input her name on different computers for different buying rooms and got that error. Then a third person tried (lucky girl, although she lost out on two days in the process), and it worked. It has also worked just fine in previous years. Her last name has an apostrophe in it. (Such as O'Brien). Does your friend have anything unusual like that in her name?

We asked that, but unfortunately she was taking a test and couldnt answer us. :/ what would reasons be for her not being eligible? She created her member ID last year.

So my primary choice during Reg & Hotel lotteries is Chrome. But if I need to run multiple browsers, then I’ll choose Firefox next, then Safari.

During the waiting room yesterday I had a strange issue on Firefox on Mac where the spinning circle would stop if FF was not in the foreground. Once I put it in the foreground, it was fine. I know the circle is a simple GIF, so it was kinda odd.

I mentioned earlier that I got a code that got in from someone else on this forum. Since both Chrome & Firefox were still in the waiting room; I ended up opening the code in Safari and it worked just fine. As a web developer, i actually have tepid faith in Safari. I’ve had to make many workarounds because sites would break on Safari. They’re not bugs per se, but different interpretations of the official HTML spec.

I usually run TenFourFox (a Firefox port) on my wired OS 10.4 Mac and Edge on a wifi Windows laptop. Some things don't work reliably with Edge and IE is still a default, but I haven't had reg or hotel issues with either. (Of course as things always seem to happen, my home wifi cut out for some reason while I was in the waiting room, but the newbie in our Group of 5 [Power 5?] got in early to cover what we didn't get in Returning, where I was the lucky one.)

We use Safari & Chrome.  We didn't have anything that 'hit' for General Registration last week, but a machine using Safari hit during Returning Reg.

Right.  I was a season ticket holder for the San Diego Padres (sigh...don't judge), and they exclusively (and very conveniently) use Stub Hub as a means to resell tickets.  In fact, the standard MLB ticket policy (at least we were told it was standard MLB and not just a Padres policy), is ticket holders are allowed to sell half of their season's tickets via Stub Hub, regardless of resell value.  Some tickets I sold less than face value, some I sold for quite a bit more than face value.

CCI obviously has a strict no transfer policy, but 'scalping' of tickets isn't illegal in most states

I've known a couple, actually:
* a Pro who was trying to be cool and sell his guest badge.  They posted on a FB group wall offering the 5-day guest badge for sale (it was a paid guest badge, and the Pro was just asking for the person to pay for the badge - meaning, "hey, I have a guest badge to whomever wants to claim it/pay for it themselves").  CCI caught wind, canceled both their badge and the guest badge, and banned them for a couple of years.
* a Pro who got caught trying to sell a comp. guest badge.  He was banned permanently, and his company had to smooth it out w/CCI as CCI was looking into canceling all comp. Pro badges from the company (the guy lost his job over the incident as well).
* a Volunteer got busted scalping their badge.  He put it up on Craig's List the week/day of the Convention, and someone totally set him up with CCI: went through the motion of buying the badge, scanned it on a CCI computer, and the person was banned from Comic-Con permanently: from buying a badge as well as volunteering.

I know the Pro in the first example (who is back to being a Pro, but missed a few SDCCI and WonderCons over the incident), and was told about the other incident from a manager of the company who had to deal with the issue first hand.  The third incident was told by a friend of mine that I trust, but I can't 100% vouch for it as it's essentially boiled down to "a story a buddy told me."  The other two I heard first-hand, though.  I won't divulge any more info about the incidents out of privacy for all involved (the company was INCREDIBLY embarrassed).

Whoa. Well, I know of a guy who was being paid to sit in the Hall H line. The people who hired him gave him a badge so he could sit in line. He wanted to see the hall, so he tried to use the badge. Turns out it was a bad badge. They wanted his ID. He told them it was in the car and left to get back in line and whoever it was at the door kept the badge. I don't know what happened to the owner of that bad badge.

I've never seen the random ID check, but it would be my luck that my badge would be the first one checked so no way would I loan it out. I've had friends loan theirs, though. They were sweating bullets the whole time. I just couldn't do that.

Not a random ID check, but I was badging in once (on my way into Hall H on a Saturday morning!), and the guard looked away and didn't see the light turn green. She demanded that I badge in again and wouldn't listen when I told her I already had. So, of course, the light went red, and I had to have my ID checked. Total pain, but I was exceedingly glad that it really was my badge! Luckily, I had family to grab a seat for me.

Yes, a few years ago on Sunday late afternoon, the guards starting doing random checks as I was heading inside. They stopped at least two people. One had a booth vendor badge but the name was etched out, so of course they stopped him. I think the booth was switching them out for workers? And a woman who was using her husband’s badge. It was a guy’s name so they stopped her. Of course her ID didn’t have her husband’s name, they confiscated the badge around her neck. I was checked and let in.

This was one of the last years before RFID. With that maybe they don’t check as much now?

There are tons of people hanging out just outside the 'secure' zone on the MMM side of the convention center on Sunday afternoon, asking people if they are done with their badges.

It's pretty standard for them to ask for ID if your badge goes red for any reason. So if you didn't scan out, are going through the Sails to a line and made to scan in twice, or otherwise arouse a guard's suspicion, you will have to show ID. But I have never seen 'random' ID checks since they went RFID.

I guess my general thought is they seem to be a bit high IMO, but I was in a position of "there's nothing I can really do about it other than live with it" since it was the standard.  I suppose there might've been otherwise to try to sell the tickets not on Stub Hub, but that would've required a TON of extra work I generally don't have time for (er....because I spend too much time on forums? :P ).  It is what it is: I was very thankful for the incredible ease of the service (it's incredibly easy to compare other tix for the game to see if you're on the high or low end; easy to monitor and get updates; get payment pretty quick; etc).  If I wasn't a huge baseball fan that went to most of the games, I could easily figure out a way to pay for next season's tix by selling the most popular games (like, Dodgers fans will always over-pay for good tickets): I have a friend who's been doing that for years, where by the end of the season they already have next year's tix paid for AND a little bit of extra cash (while still attending at least half of the season's games).  I had higher-priced tix this year so the fees were noticeable & I had to really think about those fees in order to make the money I wanted.
But, it's their world & I'm just trying to coexist w/e'm so what are ya gonna do

My family was stopped once the first year of RFID randomly on Sunday for seemingly no reason.  I was stopped once on a Thursday going into Hall H for ID, after getting inside (it was late morning/early afternoon and I just walked in - no line, but oddly was held up for an ID search).

But that's twice in 20 years of Comic-Con.  CCI likely knows how much of a hassle it would be to do ID's (though NAMM Convention is incredibly strict nowadays about ID, and once that 'culture' is ingrained in attendees it's EZPZ getting in/out) and likely only checks if there is a suspicion: and likely then not-too-often.

Of course, this is past experience and who knows if this may change at some point going forward...

Grabbed my wife's badge one morning instead of mine, got in fine.  When she came later in the day we swapped back.
But yeah I think 8 years of going now and no ID checks for me.

Other accident / badge related.  Year one of me and wife going we knew very little.  Got into town Wed even though we had thur-sun badges only.  Went up to get our badges wed afternoon and were just wondering around .  Then we walked into a large crowd of people moving....turns out that was the crowd to go into preview night and the ushers just funneled us in with them.  So free preview night.  That was pre-RFID.

The first year my friend got in, he only had a Sunday badge. I was like, aw, he'll miss all the fun. He went in Saturday to get the child badge for his daughter and that took him straight into Sails. Next thing you know, we get a phone call. He somehow got lost and ended up on the floor. We were like, don't leave until you're done! They didn't catch him on the way out, but if they did, he could honestly say he was lost.

I know everyone is always frightened to death of being banned from SDCC, but has anyone ever known anyone who was banned?

My friend and I were detained and almost banned.

Several years ago before RFID was a thing, I was cosplaying and my badge somehow fell off my costume. I retraced my steps to no avail. I had a ton of exclusive merchandise that I purchased, so I showed the person at the door as I exited and explained the situation. The lady was quite stern and rude and said "you can't come back in and have to check with registration." Instead of doing that (duh), I went to my hotel to drop off my merch. and called my friend who was inside and happened to have an extra badge. He came outside and gave me his extra, but we didn't walk far enough out of eyeshot and away from the convention center; the door monitor saw me, left her post from INSIDE the con and followed us. When we tried getting back in, she detained us, demanded to see our ID's and then called security. She told security that we should "be removed" from the con.

When she walked away to let security do their job, they ended up being totally cool and understanding after we explained everything. My friend was leaving anyway and relinquished his badge and they let me go to registration to inquire about a replacement. Registration ended up giving me a replacement for free in less than a minute. Seriously. Less than a minute. I gave my name, showed them my ID and told them what happened, and the girl at the desk in Sails printed another badge and said, "Here you go!"

When I got back to the lobby, I was still in-costume and in the middle of taking photos with attendees, and that same door monitor pushed through the crowd like gangbusters and asked to see my ID like I was a criminal. The other attendees were like "WTF?" I showed her, she thoroughly examined my ID and badge to confirm it was mine and then said in a snarky, condescending tone, "See how easy that was?"

In hindsight, I could have prevented my friend from relinquishing his badge and saved a ton of heartache and angst by simply going to registration, but I figured they would think I'm lying to get another badge for someone else.

Confirmations (both for successfully going through the registration process and for the charge on your credit card) are sent to only the person who went through the registration process during the lottery. But barcodes are sent to everyone who got a badge.

So the person who got in through Open Reg will get three emails, but if someone else bought your badge for you, you get one email.

If you haven't gotten yours, a) check your spam (I know all my sister's CCI emails go to spam for some reason), and b) Log into your CCI account, click on Registration Tab, and click on "Resend Comic-Con Badge Confirmation", although this link may not be available yet for those who got their badges in Open Reg (it took a couple weeks for that link to show up for those who got their badges in Returning Registration).

Painstakingly checked every email in reg and spam inbox for the entire week.

No indication in account that badge has been purchased. Just has the Open Reg info, waiting room link, code, etc. in the tab.

try emailing them at [email protected]

EPIC's number is 1 980 233 3777

they can easily resend the bar code. sometimes the email just gets lost-

Thanks! Will give them a call tomorrow.

If anyone logs into their CCI account right now, is it obvious badges have been purchased? I'm trying to discern whether everyone else sees the same thing as me currently.

At the moment, i'm not too hopeful that I actually have badges. Buyer did get a confirmation screen, but didn't seem to have received an order acknowledgement email.

Yeah, screenshot from order confirmation page. No other communication from CCI besides that. None of the typical order confirm emails.

This just seems unusual. And seeing as how I’m out money and potentially have no badges, I’m a bit on edge.

My wife also didn’t receive anything. (Buyer also bought for her). Maybe payment didn’t go through from buyer. I’ve asked them to check, but of course I want an answer right away and email back and forth takes a bit.

She also said sometimes it takes weeks for things to get sent out, but that’s a little less pro-active then I’d like.

The yellow "Resend Comic-Con Badge Confirmation" button for open registration on the "Registration Info" tab has already shown up in the sister's memberid account, so it should be there by now.
Also, if you look a the screen grab, make sure it states "Congratulations! Your order has been submitted."
Emails would be from [email protected].

Fantastic. Sarcasm there.  Neither my wife nor I have the resend option. I’ll try calling the buyer.

@clarrkkent Just to double check, are you POSITIVE the screenshot is from the confirmation page? I ask because a couple people here have mistakenly thought they went through the whole registration process but actually didn’t. After entering your payment information and clicking Submit, there’s one more page where you have to type AGREE to Terms and Conditions, and click Submit again.

This trips people up because entering CC info is usually the last step, and for some odd reason, CCI decided to add an extra page to the buying process after the payment page instead of before.

Heck, one year this nearly screwed me over. I was excitedly telling people I got badges. And then I double checked my browser and realized I hadn’t actually finished buying the badges. Luckily I was still within the 15 minute window.

I cannot be sure since I didn’t buy. I will say the buyer is VERY experienced and a long time member. Will abstain from naming them because it's likely a CCI problem or a genuine mistake.

That’s NOT the confirmation page. You can tell because there’s the “Remove” link.

That’s the second to last page I was talking about.

Yeah, the longer I'm looking into this the more I'm pretty sure we aren't going to Comic-con this year. And now I have flights that are already bought, so that's cool.

I texted them, so we'll see. I expect they'll find no actual charge.

Sorry man, that sucks.

You could always email CCI and see if they may be sympathetic to your cause? I know it’s a long shot, but you have nothing to lose.

Next year, I’m definitely putting this quirk of the badge buying process on blast and making sure everyone knows. Every single registration, both Returning and Open, I hear of at least one case of this. And I don’t really even blame the badge buyer. It’s just terrible UX design.

Yeah. Unfortunately this appears to be the second time I've been burned in the buying group. For returning reg, someone clicked that they were buying for us and 10 minutes later finally said they had some kind of issue, at which point all badges were gone. Good times.

Thanks for this. I called and it was extremely easy to talk with someone. They confirmed no pending transactions for my Name or CCI ID.

The buyer also confirmed no charges occurred.

However, they're still waiting to hear back directly from CCI through the form submission on CCI website, thinking there's some long delay in payment processing or something. I pointed out what others did about the image she sent, but she swears she did the "agree" thing.

Wow, sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately, that page you posted isn't the confirmation. The page with the blue bar is:

(https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffriendsofcc.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2017%2F04%2Fcci3.jpg&hash=3599f35e591717fd7b6c28f0d82d6739e3c1a971)

It sounds like your group person didn't type in the "agree" part. That final step probably kept quite a few people from getting badges. When you contact CCI, I hope they are sympathetic to your cause. Good luck!

LMAO. Sorry!! I'm sure it's all good. ESPECIALLY if you've gotten ANY comms from CCI since Reg. The key here is that neither myself nor the buyer has heard a peep, no charge has occurred on the payment method, and no "resend" link in my CCI account.

I just have the unfortunate designation of being the unlucky outlier.

A quirk of mine is that I leave the webpage up long after the lottery is over. So this saved me when I went back to look at the page and saw I hadn’t finished the process, but luckily I still had a few minutes left. And after the lottery is over, I’ll take one last look at the confirmation page, just to make sure it’s real and everything looks good (and screenshotted) before closing the tab.

I have a tendency to leave web pages up until I get receipts by email. That way, if I don't get the receipt, I print the web page. That's sort of my general rule for all purchases.

In addition to screen shots, I learned I can save the actual web page.  right click on the page, and choose 'save as' and give it whatever name you want.  When I double click on it, it comes up in my web browser.

I'm sure the web experts on the forum know how this works.

Last year, in the general sale, I goofed up when buying for someone else in our group and bought Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday for him, but somehow forgot to buy Friday. I felt AWFUL. I emailed Comic-Con, explained what I had done, making sure to note that Friday had obviously still been available when I submitted the order (since I had been able to purchase Saturday, which is the first day to sell out), and I begged for mercy. Several months later, Comic-Con sent me a note saying that, as a one-time courtesy, they would allow me to buy the missing day for the member of my group.

This was definitely a different situation than yours (since I had just forgotten to purchase a day, as opposed to having someone else forget to submit the entire purchase), but if the person who was placing your order hasn't yet reached out to SDCC, it's worth a shot. I do think the request probably needs to come from the purchaser (or, in this case, almost-purchaser). I also never mentioned the buying group; I just said I was buying for a friend.

Fingers crossed that this will somehow work out for you!

In IE, just open the Menu bar, click File, Save As, and you can save the file as a Web Archive.
Edge doesn't seem to have the capability to save pages.

So, after all is said and done, I do not have badges for my wife and I as expected. The buyer attempted to work it out with CCI, but that must not have panned out as I got a refund from the buyer today. Have fun at SDCC 2020! Hopefully I can make a return in 2021. Until then, I'll just live vicariously (enviously?) through all the posts come July.

That's a shame.

I know this may be a long shot, but would you consider the auction if they have one.  From what I heard, the prices dropped the longer the auction ran, and in the end, the prices weren't much more than the price of the badges during open registration.

Just a thought

I’ll definitely keep an eye out. I do remember the auctions getting pretty cheap. Do we know if they’ll be doing that again or was it a one off to raise money for the museum?

no oficial announcement, buy my guess is this will be something they will do every year from now on, Museum is in full operation and thats a great way to get some extra funds and to sell canceled badges, quantities could vary each year I guess.

Potentially. It will depend on airfare. We have airfare, but I only have until the end of the month to cancel for a moderate fee. If I wait until after (and no auction ends up happening) then it will cost me substantially more to cancel.

As much as they're in "we need money" mode, I can't imagine that wouldn't.  But they seem to have so many other....things....going on right now that I'm sure are a much higher priority at the moment, who knows.
