His Dark Materials **SPOILERS**
« on: November 25, 2019, 04:57:06 PM »
Surprised to see there isn't a thread on this yet.

What are people's thoughts several episodes in?

I have never read the books or watched The Golden Compass, so all the entire story is entirely new to me. And though the basic story thus far is easy enough to follow, I'm still rather confused as to exactly what is happening and why. ie, I'm basically at a loss as to the motivation for every character and faction (or even how many factions there are). One small example: who exactly is this person Boreal is looking for, and why? I feel like I'm missing a huge chunk of backstory. Or maybe I'm just not paying close enough attention. Some of the conversations with the Magisterium went way over my head.

Maybe I should just read the books. Haha.

Hmm, I think you're right.  If I hadn't read the books, I'd be puzzled too about what some characters are doing, and why.  To me, they're still laying groundwork (though I know why), and the payoffs will come later (assuming the show keeps doing a good job).  There's a very major character in the trilogy we haven't even seen yet...

I finished Season 1. Overall, I thought it was okay. It shows promise. I still think they didn't do a good enough job explaining what every faction / individual is after, though I got most of the main plot points. I'm starting on the books now that will hopefully fill in the blanks.

I watched the first 6 episodes yesterday and will finish the season today.  Luckily I have my daughter explaining the things I don't get, lol.  I'm enjoying it!

Show was ok, could have been so much better.  Seems like a ton of stuff was glossed over assuming people had read the books ....which I have not.

It's been a long time since I read the books. So I knew the major points.

Having said that, I thought the they did a good job with the story , but I see why a lot of people would be confused about what's going on.
