Title: SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME - spoilers after awhile
Post by: perc2100 on July 02, 2019, 03:14:02 PM
NON-SPOILER THOUGHTS:
FAR FROM HOME is another entertaining, well-made MCU film: solidly cast, with newcomer Jake Gyllenhaal a great choice to play Mystery while favorite characters from the first film (Ned & MJ, in particular) get more screen time.  The story is well down, too: longtime fans of the comics should be really happy with how the creatives handle Mysterio, a character I didn't think would ever get a good treatment on the big screen.

The film takes the high school comedy thematics of the first film and doubles down here.  As a HS teacher who has been on several European trips with HS groups, there was plenty to laugh at here.  Fans of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" will be hyped to see JB Smoove in a supporting role as a teacher on the trip, and there is as much comedy as there is action IMO.  Again, I'm biased a bit here so many 'normal' adults won't find the humor as plentiful, but the awkwardness of high school kids in social situations is amusing nonetheless.

There are also some nice emotional beats.  Identity is a huge part of the film throughout on both sides of the hero/villain spectrum.  The Elementals are cool and 'Avengers-level Threat," but they have a purpose for being that does resonate a bit.  Mysterio and Peter have awesome chemistry together, especially when they are seemingly trying to outdo each other to be "smartest person in the room."  Mysterio's suit tech is really cool, and the writers do a great job of tying it into past MCU films/developments.

And of course, those credits scenes!  :o ???  Don't think that ENDGAME signaled a change in the norm, as there are indeed two integral extra scenes: one mid-credits (that actually starts with a scene from one of the commercials), and one post-credits.  Lots of people in the theater this afternoon cleared out after the mid-credits scene and DANG did they miss something that will undoubtedly be huge moving forward.  To tie this into Comic-Con forums, Kevin Feigi has a LOT of explaining to do to Hall H in a few weeks, assuming he does indeed have an MCU panel!

I'll post some spoiler thoughts underneath in a bit for those who want to go in as fresh as possible.  Long-story-short if you're an MCU fan this plays on a lot of the stuff you like, and you'll probably dig FAR FROM HOME.  I def. plan on going back and catching another screening in the near future.
