Title: First time able to attend NYCC. Any advice you can give?
Post by: Brooklyndad on October 09, 2013, 05:20:22 AM
This year my wife surprised me with a ticket to comic co.  Unfortunately she didn't understand that the tickets would be sold out so readily. Luckily they put out more Thursday tickets so here I go.

Just wondering if anyone has any good advise for a newbie convention attendee?

I am spending tonight researching what is going on on Thursday, what freebies or swag I want to buy, and hopefully artists to buy from.

However I am in the dark about when I should show up to await entry into the con. Also concerned about how everything is there. I have issues walking and usually wear a neck and back brace (bulging disks and fibro aren't fun people) but I really really want to go finally so going to suck it up and go. I am concerned about how lines could be and getting items I really am wanting.

Focuses for me:

Transformers
Walking dead
Tmnt
Lego
Avengers
Star Wars

For my kids (hoping to grab some stuff for my kids)

Tmnt
Justice league
Star Wars
Lego

Thanks in advance

Austin

Only Thursday because only have a ticket for then. I would go Friday and Sunday but no ticket no luck.

Hope to see as much as I can and hopefully get some neat goodies for the kids as well as myself

I know you said you did some research, which is a good start. Take a look at the schedule, see if anything catches your eye. Since you only have one day, pick wisely. I wouldn't want to waste all day in a line or room when there's a lot to see.

Thanks :)

I am just wondering what time I should show up to get in line to get in or it doesn't matter?

I honestly don't expect huge lines Thursday. I know it's not sold out yet. Normally if you show up an hour or so after the doors open, you can walk right in.

there's a great general tips and tricks thread for con goers, it's geared to sdcc but more then 50% of the tips are also relevant to nycc

Not only is food allowed, so are prepared meals.  That means it's a very good idea to pack your own lunch, perhaps your own dinner, and take it with you to the con.

I myself have two thermal lunch jars with which to have warm meals at the con.  And I also have large bottles of barley tea, my NYCC drink of choice.

And if protein bars, beef jerky, and the like are your thing, look into those, too.

So I saw from some earlier threads that they give out wristbands for the popular panels.  How early do the lines start for panels?  And how early does one need to be in line on Thursday?  My train gets in Thursday morning but I'm wondering if I need to switch to an earlier train.

Depending on the panel, lines form at least an hour earlier, sometimes two.  And because of limited seating in each panel room, the lines often cut out after a certain amount of people have entered.

I think the first event on Thursday last year was at 10:00 am.  But if you manage to arrive before 8:00 am, you'll be fine for sure.

You mentioned art but I'm not sure if you mean original comic art or sketches.  I spend most of my time in artist alley and can tell you as far as sketches go, you can definitely get on the list for artists if you're there first thing on Thursday but you will jeopardize you chances of getting toys from the main hall.  If original art is your thing, you will be fine perusing throughout the day as most of the noteworthy panel art will have already been sold before you can get to it.

So I downloaded at app, which seems very similar to the ECCC app they had earlier this year. But I'm having problems. For example, the celebs don't have their panels listed. Felicia Day is only listed for Con Man, but not Spolight on Felicia Day. Finn Jobes and Natalie Dormer are only listed as autographing, and not at the GoT panel. It makes it difficult to plan a schedule when you know there are errors and don't know if omissions are intended or not.

Also, where are the panels for the Hammerstein Ballroom?

In Panels & Screenings search, you can search by venue for "Hammerstein" and this comes up:

Hmmmm... that doesn't seem to work in the app. I get the Naruto premiere, but that's it. Still, it's more than I got before, so thank you!

Yeah, I'm trying to set it up on my iPad so I don't have to carry a printed schedule around. Looks like that isn't going to happen.

This'll be my first time at NYCC. As I usually end up buying more stuff than I can bring back, does the Javits center have a Fedex center like SDCC does where you can ship stuff back home? Thanks!

Yep! I've never used it but I think it's near the Main Stage.

I've a question that those familiar with NY might be able to comment on:

I'm looking at attending NYCC for the first time this year and have booked in to the West Side YMCA, 5 West 63rd Street. The bookings refundable until Sept so no risk in booking now if i change my mind later.

Now the accom is very basic and it's a shared bathroom but I'm ok with that as all I really need is some where to sleep but my question is if the area it's in is OK.

I picked it as it was very cheap, next to few tourist attractions I want to see as well and the location is just about walkable to the javits centre (half an hour walk). Obviously closer is better but trying to keep this trip as cheap as possible so I'm ok with this for basic accom!

Yes, this area is more than okay.  You'll be fine.  You can even catch the 1 or 2 from Columbus Circle, switch to the 7 at Times Square going Westbound and it will take you right to Javits.

I work not far from there. It is a VERY safe area. I sometimes work until midnight and I've never felt unsafe walking that late. There are almost always people out, and there is a police station at Columbus Circle, which is just a few blocks from there. Also at Columbus Circle, every train that stops there is an easy transfer to the 7, which terminates directly across from the Javits.

How hard is it to get into the Hulu theater?  We want to see the 5:30 panel and am concerned that it will fill up hours earlier.
