The Bud Light ads were great this year!  The GoT one in particular, but their agency did a super job with all of them.

I also liked The Handmaid's Tale ad, and we had to rewind the Avengers and watch again.

A solid ad year IMO!  It makes up for the crappy football game they played in between the ads.

anybody else been following the Academy Awards drama?

first it's in, then its out then it's back in categories?  https://variety.com/2019/film/news/all-oscar-categories-to-air-live-after-hollywood-protest-1203141496/

Quote
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has reversed its controversial decision to hand out four Oscars during the telecast’s commercial breaks.

Following a Thursday night meeting with top cinematographers, Academy leadership including president John Bailey and CEO Dawn Hudson have pledged to air every awards category on the live show a week from Sunday.

“The Academy has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling. All Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format. We look forward to Oscar Sunday, February 24,” an Academy statement said.

The Academy stood firm for days against backlash from filmmakers across the four categories and their peers. The group is bewildered, one of the insiders said, as the Academy’s membership voted to approve this decision last August.

Open letters from A-list talent decrying the move as reductive and insulting — on top of heavy criticism and judgment from the unions representing those categories — proved too much to handle.

The Oscars will now run over three hours as a result, the source added, which upends a leading Academy goal of trimming the show to 180 minutes.

Fallout from the category decision is one of many headline-grabbing disasters to plague this year’s Oscars, following a prolonged and ugly process of hiring, firing, and then potentially rehiring comedian Kevin Hart as a host. The Academy also floated and then canceled plans to introduce a popular film category, and abandoned a move to prevent some best song nominees from performing during the telecast.

WHAT??? a category for films most of us actually see???? omg what is this world coming too?!

Post by: TardisMom on February 17, 2019, 08:35:40 AM
Personally, I think the Popular Film category isn't needed.  What IS needed is an open minded look at movies that appeal to the masses to be judged fairly alongside the indie type movies that usually win.  Think Black Panther.  It is an excellent movie that should be/is in the Best Picture category based on its own merits, not in a separate category.

Overall, respectable winners. Except... Remi Malek winning over Christian Bale *sigh*
At least "shallow" won best song.

While I wanted BP to win, I called it with Greenbook.  I just know Hollywood and that fit the criteria.

The other songs were good but they didn't hold a candle to Shallow, I would have been highly shocked if it hadn't won. Really though everything turned out just as I expected.

Olivia Colman's win was the huge upset. Glenn Close was supposed to be a total lock. I was really happy for Colman. The Favourite was my favorite film of awards season. Green Book is another awful choice people will b***h about for years. I don't know when they will open their eyes and learn how embarrassing it is to keep awarding films about Black lives made by white people and told from the white perspective. And especially awarding it in the same race with BP and BlacKkKlansman.

Soon audiences around the world will be able to stream the story of an all girl-team of African spies, who also happen to be four normal Zambian teens by day. This week, Netflix announced that it has picked up Mama K’s Team 4, an animated series as its latest African content.

Netflix is teaming up  with South Africa’s Triggerfish, who have emerged as devoted tellers of African children’s stories through animation and London-based children’s entertainment specialists Cake. The Cape Town-based Triggerfish animation studios has consistently produced children’s animation, despite a lack of funding and imagination. With Netflix in Africa, the story of African animation has become more hopeful.

Disney has confirmed that big changes are coming to the Fox film division, including word that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is inheriting Fox’s comic book heroes like the X-Men franchise.

Disney is also axing the majority of the existing Fox film development slate and refocusing output, after the studio posted a $170 million operating loss in Disney’s fiscal third quarter.

Disney CEO Bob Iger told Wall Street analysts on Tuesday during Disney’s quarterly earnings call that the Fox’s superhero titles would move forward under the stewardship of Feige. In addition, the company’s streaming platform Disney Plus will get four big brands from Fox to adapt as straight-to-service content. Those include the Macaulay Culkin holiday franchise “Home Alone,” the historical action romp “Night at the Museum,” the family comedy “Cheaper by the Dozen” and the live-action “The Diary of a Wimpy Kid.”

But that is not the case; in fact, with Iger’s announcement Tuesday that the company will be bundling Disney Plus, Hulu and ESPN Plus, FX’s programming will be a part of a formidable package, offered at $12.99 a month.....By the end of 2019, there will be a projected 520 scripted programs airing across television platforms, a 5% increase from the prior year, said Landgraf on stage at the Television Critics Assn. summer press tour on Tuesday.

Disney missed earnings this quarter.  What were two of the big reasons?  Dark Phoenix and Star Wars land.  Disney made a point of saying they inherited Dark Phoenix so weren't responsible for the financial disaster the film is.  They also acknowledge mistakes that led to Star Wars land having such low attendance.

Cost and that the other main attraction isn't open yet.  The high cost puts many people off especially since only one of the two main attractions is opened.  Why go now instead of waiting for it to fully open?  People have theorized that the plan was to open the park partially now to bring in people and then bring them again when the other ride opens.  Instead many people have decided to wait for the park to fully open.  Which feeds into a lot of the criticism about Star Wars land, there's not much to do but shop.

Not really.  Disney wanted to up their cut from the current 5% to 50%.  That's quite a bump.  Spiderman is the top grosser for Sony.  As a business decision, it makes more sense for Sony to go it alone with 100% of what could be a smaller pie than take a much smaller cut of of a possibly bigger one.  I think it would be easier for Sony to carry on Spiderman without the MCU than for Disney to explain what happened to Spiderman in the MCU.  He had been set up to be the Iron Man replacement in the MCU.

Spider-Man is back in action. After publicly parting ways over a deal gone south, Disney/Marvel and Sony are back at the table and have struck a deal that would see Marvel produce another Spider-Man film for Sony.

The new film even has a release date: July 16, 2021.

Benioff and Weiss were supposed to usher in the post-Skywalker era of the Star Wars brand with a 2022 new-start story that would stake out a new frontier for the era-defining cinema brand created by George Lucas. The Emmy-winning pair cited their historic deal with Netflix. They said their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but, regrettably, their schedule is full.

If this was announced pre Season 7 GoT, I would've been extremely bummed. But post Season 8, I'm relieved. I'm not sold on their ability to create something original and engaging, which can be seen when GoT the TV show went beyond the books.

It's on Netflix, Hulu and Prime. One of my favorites. The first season is a little uneven and off as they tried to find themselves, then it just gets good every episode.

It will be interesting to see how they will deal with replacing the main character. Plug in the new person and ignore the change like nothing happened?  Make up some reason for the facial change(her crazy sister sliced up her old face?). Kill off Kate Kane and install a new Batwoman?

From https://pressroom.warnermedia.com/us/media-release/conan-obrien-extends-relationship-warnermedia

Quote
LOS ANGELES – NOVEMBER 17, 2020 – After an extraordinary 28 years as a late night television host including a ten-year, critically-acclaimed run on TBS, Conan O’Brien will extend his relationship with WarnerMedia with a brand new, weekly variety series on HBO Max.  As one of the most prolific late-night hosts, O’Brien will conclude TBS’ award-winning nightly talk show “CONAN” at the end of its tenth season in June 2021. His signature travel specials, “Conan Without Borders,” will continue.

“In 1993 Johnny Carson gave me the best advice of my career: ‘As soon as possible, get to a streaming platform.’ I’m thrilled that I get to continue doing whatever the hell it is I do on HBO Max, and I look forward to a free subscription,” says O’Brien.

“28 years is a monumental achievement in late-night television,” said Brett Weitz, General Manager for TNT, TBS and truTV.  “We’re incredibly proud of the groundbreaking work that Conan and his team have accomplished during the 10 years at TBS and are so glad that we will continue to have his presence on our air with the ‘Conan Without Borders’ specials.  We celebrate his success and are glad to see it grow across our WarnerMedia family.”

“Conan’s unique brand of energetic, relatable, and at times, absurdist, comedy has charmed late-night audiences for nearly three decades. We can’t wait to see what he and the rest of Team Coco will dream up for this brand new, variety format each week,” said Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer, HBO and HBO Max.

My husband (who works in television streaming) is reasonably sure that Turner owns HBO... that there is some cross-ownership. So the show isn't really changing 'owners'. So SDCC Conan appearances are still just as likely (barring other issues, like COVID).

Both TBS and HBO are Warnermedia brands.  So Conan is just moving in house to another outlet.

Yes, Warner Media owns TBS, HBO, etc (WB, DC, Cartoon Network...).  I have HBO Max, and the one thing that IMO sets it apart from the other streaming services is its vast library.  It has a 'Turner Classic Movies' channel on the service that I _LOVE_ as it features legit great, classic movies (I think of 'classic' movies as anything from the 1970's or older).
I suspect Conan will still likely to SDCC stuff, but in likely a much smaller capacity (meaning, he won't have 4 eps taped at SDCC since he'll only have a weekly show).  I suspect he'll have a smaller budget for that type of thing but more creative freedom

Yeah I read somewhere that the Ellen game show (Game of Games I  think it's called) has _ELEVEN_ COVID Supervisors.  As an education union negotiator I'm pushing for our district to install similar positions at all of the school site; they're basically employees who's sole job is to ensure that all COVID safety protocols are being followed at all times.  It's a position that makes 100% complete sense, IMO: most employees in jobs currently are busy 1) doing their job and 2) doing their job while thinking of all of the myriad of COVID safety-related changes they/we now have to follow.  I talked to a friend of mine that works on TV and film productions and he told me simply, "we're all focused on our own jobs so it makes sense to hire people to focus on everyone maintaining safety protocols: we can't all have Tom Cruise in our productions  :P "

There are several Marvel scripted podcasts as well as other MCU based podcasts(Not all the material is exclusive to Sirius/XM)

There is also a weekly show hosted by Entertainment Weekly writers that reviews/previews Superhero TV shows and movies called “Superhero Insider”

I've been working as a Covid-19 Compliance Officer (C19CO) on film sets. Basically, SAG-AFTRA produced a plan called "The Safe Way Forward" last June and that along with California state and the counties/cities provides the guidelines for film, television, commercials, and music videos. For big shows and films, the Covid-19 team could be huge. You needed at least one C19CO per 16 people, you had to separate the set into zones, everyone had to be tested regularly, etc. The C19CO are not allowed to do anything to assist the production. They just monitor. On some shows you literally had a team of people who all day just went around wiping surfaces and door knobs and such. Another group who oversee testing. Everyone has to have their temp checked before arriving on set, so you had to have dedicated entrances and people to do that. All crafty has to be single use manufacturer sealed. Equipment has to be sanitized. Props have to be sanitized between any exchanges. No one can bring outside F&B on to set. Nothing communal. On some sets, coffee pots were not allowed. If people are within 6-feet of each other, in addition to masks they have to wear face shields. Some sets required double-masking. Everyday of every production had to have Covid plans for SAG and for the county/city you were shooting in. If there was a kiss, it required an additional special test the day of production and the two people kissing had to rinse their mouths with an oral cleanser containing hydrogen peroxide for 1-minute before and after every take that they kissed. It was nuts. With respect to Cruise, in general, you can yell at your child, but in any other circumstance it is uncalled for. Especially when you take into account the power dynamic between Cruise and the crew. And his ego and vanity. It was awful. With that being said, I have had tense days with crew members where f-bombs were dropped back and forth between us because they didn’t want to follow the covid rules. My biggest issue is that cast and crew should have the decency to respect that we are just trying to do our job. That's when I would get pissed. I'm just trying to pay the rent. I would have actors and actresses complaining to me for enforcing the rules that their union created.

Thanks for posting that @dcuodust (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3906) . It's a really interesting insight into the situation on sets. Are all of those restrictions still in place, or have any of them been relaxed with the recent changes in state law and CDC recommendations?

That's pathetic.  You didn't make the rules.  You are just doing your job.  They should respect that.  When I complain to companies about some rule, I make sure the rep I'm talking to knows it's not about them.  I even say they have nothing to apologize for when they say they are sorry.  They didn't make the policy.  I have a problem with the policy, not with them.  Unfortunately they are my interface.

As others have said, an interesting read.  The kissing sanitization is nuts.

When an Interpol-issued Red Notice — the highest level warrant to hunt and capture the world’s most wanted— goes out, the FBI’s top profiler John Hartley (Dwayne Johnson) is on the case. His global pursuit finds him smack dab in the middle of a daring heist where he’s forced to partner with the world’s greatest art thief Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds) in order to catch the world’s most wanted art thief, “The Bishop” (Gal Gadot). The high-flying adventure that ensues takes the trio around the world, across the dance floor, trapped in a secluded prison, into the jungle and, worst of all for them, constantly into each other’s company. The all-star cast is joined by Ritu Arya and Chris Diamantopolous. Directed and written by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Central Intelligence, Skyscraper) and produced by Hiram Garcia, Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, Beau Flynn’s Flynn Picture Co. and Thurber’s Bad Version, Inc., Red Notice is a stylish globe-trotting game of cat-and-mouse (and cat).

Some movie trailer highlights:

MCU
* We had our 2nd DOCTOR STRANGE: IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS trailer drop online during the pregame.  While it kind of/sort of only slightly fleshed out story/plot points, it gave some pretty great ideas of what we're into.  First we're reminded that Sam Raimi is bringing his A game to the MCU.  He's an amazing director, who became really mainstream famous w/the original Spidey trilogy (a lot of us genre nerds thought he was famous right out of the gate with his low budget Evil Dead trilogy).  Every shot looked stunning in both its vibrant colors and composition; one of the last shots that was a spinning extreme closeup on Scarlet Witch's eye felt sooooooo Sam Raimi, so I'm really excited to see him play in the Marvel Studios sandbox!
And of course, there were a few fun tidbits hinted at in the trailer: Strange being locked in handcuffs & escorted by Ultron bots?  A shot where Strange is led into a room with several chairs up on-high
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
)?  Oh, a very distinct voice about to tell Strange "the truth" (
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
?!?!?!?!
And a great poster also dropped, that had a teaser hinting at
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Oddly, in the 60ish second teaser aired on TV there were two shots that were NOT in the full trailer: a shot of a seeming zombie Strange, as well as a shot of Strange in full-on Sorcerer Supreme (possibly evil version?) glory.
AWESOME trailer that I've likely already watched a dozen times
* we also got our second trailer for Moon Knight, the Disney+ series premiering at the end of March.  I dunno if there was any new information in that one, but there were some great shots of the title character (the one of him leaping from above, cape spread to mimic a crescent moon, was ACES!) as well as a few shots of our hero suffering through what may be schizophrenic episodes or something else entirely.  Fun trailer that makes me hyped for the property!

NOPE
Jordan Peele's third film dropped a trailer that tells us nothing about the story or circumstances of the film yet hints at another trippy, tense ride from a director who's quickly asserted his dominance in genre storytelling.  NOPE _might_ be about an alien invasion.  Or it might be about fearing unknown and what humans do when stressed about not knowing something.  Or it might be neither of those and something altogether different.  Either way, as previously they had me with "from Jordan Peele" and this trailer only solidified how I will absolutely need to see NOPE at my earliest convenience.

JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION
I think this is the same trailer the dropped a few days prior, but fun nonetheless.  Your mileage may vary regarding this series 'reboot-quels' starring Chris Pratt & Bryce Dallas-Howard, but this film looks like it's jumping on the nostalgia bandwagon by bringing back the three stars of the original film.  For me, I'm excited to see full-on dinosaur rampaging in modern society mayhem so I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.

THE LOST CITY
This looks like fun: a more comedic riff of the 80's classic ROMANCING THE STONE (itself one of the better 80's riffs on the Indiana Jones films; which was a riff on 1940's jungle adventure films).  I love this cast and I look forward to the fun times.  I often forget Brad Pitt is in this film, so when he shows up in the trailer I'm always a but surprised.

AMBULANCE
Michael Bay can direct solid films when he wants to, and Jake Gyllenhaal has made really interesting acting choices over the last few decades.  This film about a huge LA heist looks good, and co-starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (who was amazing in HBO's "The Watchmen" series among other things) makes this a 'must watch' for me.  I've been in the mood for a good heist film and this looks more-than-competent.

You can catch all of these trailers and a few others I didn't mention here: https://tvline.com/lists/super-bowl-movie-trailers-2022-watch-video/the-adam-project-ryan-reynolds/ (https://tvline.com/lists/super-bowl-movie-trailers-2022-watch-video/the-adam-project-ryan-reynolds/)

Yeah for me, the ONLY thing I really care about regarding the Super Bowl are the movie commercials. As a musician/music teacher I also always get into the halftime shows, and often the pregame stuff, as well, but really I just want to see new movie footage - don't care about the sports as much  :P

There is a group of us talking about it, but my current concern is how fast they move you in and out, they say 3 days but really it's maybe 2 depending on check in and check out.  For that price I thought I would be staying around 4-5 days.

Here's a video review of the Star Wars hotel.  Warning, it has spoilers near the end of the video but they give you plenty of warning.  It looks like what a well done long offsite would be.  I now have something on the bucket list.

If money was absolutely no object? Absolutely
Otherwise, that's a big NOPE for this family of SW nerds. For that cost I can go to Europe or something.

Keep in mind, my dad had pounded it into my head growing up that hotels were only a place to store your stuff during the day & sleep overnight.  If I'm on vacation, I want to see all the cool sights, not necessarily run around on a scavenger hunt type of thing.  Don't get me wrong, this thing looks REALLY cool, and maybe someday the experience with the fam will justify/outweigh the immense price tag (that isn't necessarily unjustifiable - talent and tech cost money and if the experience is worth it the cost is justified).  This just isn't really my cup-o-tea, but to be blunt I often don't think the price of staying in a Disneyland Resort hotel is worth whatever perceived benefits.
Also keep in mind I was a Disneyland Annual Passholder for 15+ years and have pretty much been there/done that as far as experiences so this may be the type of thing I'd think "well, if I don't go to the parks at all and just spend all that budget money of ticket prices on the hotel experience..."

I had a Disneyland pass for years and we did stay at the Disneyland Resort hotel despite living within driving distance. I say the staycation was totally worth it. Going there for the day feels completely different from staying there. I can't describe why, but we loved it enough to do it twice.

I break the list down into 3 categories
never watch 75%
eye candy/mindless/distracting noise 20% (ncis/fbi/911)
must watch 5% (la brea & endgame)

“Charmed,” “Dynasty,” “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In the Dark” have been canceled at The CW, Variety has learned.

Both “Roswell, New Mexico” and “In the Dark” have already completed filming on their upcoming seasons and will conclude after those episodes have aired.

Also canceled Thursday by the younger-skewing broadcast network were “Naomi” and “4400.”

Read this am that Mr. Mayor was canceled after this current Season 2.
I really liked Season 1, and have Season 2 piled up on my DVR ready to watch sometime in the near future.  Kinda bummed to see this canceled, but I obviously wasn't watching this ASAP so...I guess...sorry everyone involved in Mr. Mayor for not watching it more expeditiously  :(

Yeah the new execs from the new ownership are really throwing things in turmoil.  They're dropping the nearly-completed BATGIRL as well as the Scooby-Do sequel film SCOOB: HIOLIDY HAUNT.  Not only that, I read this morning that HBO Max quietly dropped a half dozen 'HBO Max Exclusive' films in order to not have to pay residuals to talent for low-performing content. https://variety.com/2022/digital/news/hbo-max-removes-warner-bros-films-streaming-exclusive-1235332258/  (https://variety.com/2022/digital/news/hbo-max-removes-warner-bros-films-streaming-exclusive-1235332258/)
This _could_ be as simple as 1) cost-cutting and 2) new executive dumping old executives projects: a not-uncommon thing with Hollywood studios.  Crazy, though, to dump $90m in a film and not even shift it to HBO Max.

Will be curious to see what they do w/THE FLASH next June...

And She-Hulk is right around the corner!

One week at a time! LOL

so a bit of history & why I've been a huge proponent of the 'next week in tv' articles.
First, in my day when i was growing up before tv recording devices, my dad would spend time every sunday with the magazine TV Guide, highlighting the shows he wanted to watch in the coming week. Yes, he's the one who introduced me to Star Trek TOS and taught me to pronounce it correctly ;)

Second, I got a Tivo in '03 at the beginning of the DVR transition. The ability to skip commercials & set up season pass recordings has an unintended consequence of not learning about the new shows upcoming. So, of course i fell back on the example of my dad & actively searched for new shows. 20 years later I compile the listings on a weekly basis for the blog's weekly tv article.
Life comes full circle  :D

Percy Jackson is a smart and compassionate kid with a sharp sense of humor. He’s always seen himself as an outsider, in no small part because of how the world sees his ADHD and dyslexia. He’s impulsive and rambunctious and is quick to anger when things seem unfair to him. But beneath his cynicism is an affectionate son and loyal friend who just wants to do right by those he cares about. If only he could find a place where he fits in.

Aryan Simhadri stars as Grover Underwood – a satyr, half boy and half goat, disguised as a 12 year old boy. Grover cares deeply about others and will always choose what is best for them, sometimes at his own expense. Though cautious by nature, he’ll always throw himself into a fight to protect his friends, especially his best friend Percy Jackson.

I ran across this ny times article about fall tv
40 shows to watch for https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/08/arts/television/tv-shows-this-fall.html?smid=url-share

it might be behind a pay wall so...

Quote

By Mike Hale
The fall television season got off to an early start this year with the arrival of the dueling franchise extensions and hopeful blockbusters, “House of the Dragon” on HBO and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” on Amazon Prime Video. But TV’s vast landscape offers a lot more than expensively produced, effects-laden fantasy. From the relatable delights of “Abbott Elementary” to the highly specific hilarity of “Documentary Now!,” here are some noteworthy fall premieres, arranged in chronological order.

All dates are subject to change.

THE SERPENT QUEEN The story of Catherine de’ Medici, the 16th-century queen of France, in a satirical, talking-to-the-camera 21st-century telling, with Samantha Morton and Liv Hill as Catherine and a large cast, including Charles Dance, Colm Meaney and Ludivine Sagnier, as the clerics and aristocrats who underestimate her at their peril. Starz, Sept. 11.

THE JENNIFER HUDSON SHOW The success of daytime talk-show hosts is notoriously hard to predict, and whether Hudson will have the right skill set and personality for the role is about to be seen. But she immediately becomes the most talented singer and actress in the field, for what that’s worth. Syndicated, Sept. 12.

THE HANDMAID’S TALE This bleak allegory and nonlinear-TV pioneer — the first streaming show to win an Emmy for outstanding drama series — soldiers into its fifth season, with June (Elisabeth Moss) quickly coming down from the cathartic high of Season 4’s bloody conclusion. Hulu, Sept. 14.

ATLANTA After a third season, ending in May, that was quietly received — and that dropped more than half of the show’s previous broadcast audience — Donald Glover’s prickly comedy quickly returns for a fourth and final go-round. FX, Sept. 15.

THE U.S. AND THE HOLOCAUST Ken Burns, directing with Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein, devotes six hours to an uncomfortable chapter of American history with an alarmingly familiar backdrop of racism and xenophobia. PBS, Sept. 18.

QUANTUM LEAP Raymond Lee (the sympathetic diner owner in “Kevin Can F**k Himself”) plays a new time-jumping do-gooder in this reboot of the early-90s sci-fi series. The Quantum Leap project is restarted and the original hero, Sam Beckett, is still missing, so a Scott Bakula guest appearance seems pretty much preordained. NBC, Sept. 19.

PARIS POLICE 1900 In the spirit of “Babylon Berlin,” this period policier sets standard crime drama against a vivid historical backdrop: the Dreyfus affair, organized and violent antisemitism, the rise of the pioneering lawyer Jeanne Chauvin (Eugenie Derouand) and the sometimes deadly career of the Parisian courtesan Marguerite Steinheil (Evelyne Brochu). MHz Choice, Sept. 20.

REBOOT Steven Levitan, who grabbed the network-sitcom brass ring with “Just Shoot Me!” and “Modern Family,” indulges in some gentle self-parody. Judy Greer, Keegan-Michael Key and Johnny Knoxville play the cast of a hacky early-aughts family comedy who reunite for a new version written by a young woman (Rachel Bloom of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”) who is strangely obsessed with the original show. Hulu, Sept. 20.

ABBOTT ELEMENTARY Quinta Brunson’s sitcom about struggling teachers at a Philadelphia elementary school, a breakout hit in the spring and an Emmy nominee for best comedy series, embarks on its second season. ABC, Sept. 21.

ANDOR Tony Gilroy has more on his résumé than a writing credit for “Rogue One,” and it looks as if his new “Star Wars” series might incorporate some of the real-world grit he displayed a feel for in the Bourne movies. That would be a good thing, though don’t tell it to your friend with the lightsaber collection. Disney+, Sept. 21.

REASONABLE DOUBT Kerry Washington is an executive producer and a director of this legal melodrama created by Raamla Mohamed, who was a writer and producer on Washington’s breakthrough series, “Scandal.” Emayatzy Corinealdi plays a high-rent, high-stress Los Angeles lawyer whose conscience begins to bite her in the first scripted series from Disney’s Onyx Collective brand for creators of color. Hulu, Sept. 27.

THE DARK HEART Gustav Möller, director of the Swedish film “The Guilty” (remade in America starring Jake Gyllenhaal), oversaw this five-part thriller inspired by real events. A woman who manages a civilian search team for missing persons takes on the case of a landowner and lumber baron who alienated a lot of people, including his ambitious daughter, before he disappeared. Topic, Sept. 29.

SO HELP ME TODD A quirky-funny mystery series — in the long lineage of “Monk” — starring Marcia Gay Harden as a Type-A lawyer and Skylar Astin as her son, who’s better at investigating than he is at adulting. CBS, Sept. 29.

ANNE RICE’S INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE AMC takes its first step toward an Anne Rice universe, under the aegis of the veteran producer Mark Johnson (“Better Call Saul”). Jacob Anderson, the eunuch warrior Grey Worm in “Game of Thrones,” plays Louis, the Brad Pitt role from the movie version; Sam Reid steps in for Tom Cruise as Lestat; and the newcomer Bailey Bass, soon to be seen in several “Avatar” sequels, replaces Kirsten Dunst as the child vampire, Claudia. AMC, Oct. 2.

EAST NEW YORK William Finkelstein, a creator of this cop drama, spent the 1990s and early 2000s writing and producing for a good roster of shows: “L.A. Law,” “Murder One,” “Brooklyn South,” “Law & Order” and “NYPD Blue.” On the other hand, he also created “Cop Rock” with Steven Bochco. Amanda Warren (the mayor in “The Leftovers”) plays a new precinct boss in the Brooklyn neighborhood of the title, heading a cast that includes Jimmy Smits, Richard Kind and Ruben Santiago-Hudson. CBS, Oct. 2.

THE WALKING DEAD There was a time — and it was only six years ago — when “The Walking Dead” was drawing more than 12 million viewers an episode and the death of a major character was Monday morning news. Now more important as intellectual property than as weekly storytelling, the original series shuffles to the finish line with its final eight episodes. AMC, Oct. 2.

MAKING BLACK AMERICA: THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE Henry Louis Gates Jr. explores the codes, networks and private societies that Black Americans have created “behind the veil” of the color line in a four-part documentary series. PBS, Oct. 4.

ALASKA DAILY Tom McCarthy, who made one of the best newspaper dramas of our time in the film “Spotlight,” created this series about an abrasive reporter (Hilary Swank) who gets canceled in New York and takes a job in Anchorage, lured by a story about the deaths of Indigenous women. The presence of Jeff Perry as her new boss probably isn’t the only thing that will remind you of the shows of the ABC stalwart Shonda Rhimes. ABC, Oct. 6.

A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY Anna Paquin and Colin Hanks star in this true-crime mini-series as the parents of the actress Jan Broberg, who was kidnapped when she was 12 and again when she was 14 by the same family friend (played by Jake Lacy). The bizarre story has also been told in the 2017 feature documentary “Abducted in Plain Sight.” Peacock, Oct. 6.

PENNYWORTH: THE ORIGIN OF BATMAN’S BUTLER This stylish “Batman” prequel series, about the former special-forces soldier who will one day be Bruce Wayne’s butler (as the show’s awkward new title makes clear), leaves Epix for a platform closer to its DC Comics roots. Season 3 also mostly leaves behind the alt-history British civil war that occupied the first two installments, jumping ahead five years and introducing superheroes. HBO Max, Oct. 6.

LET THE RIGHT ONE IN John Ajvide Lindqvist’s ultra-bleak 2004 novel about a child vampire keeps circulating through the culture: It has inspired films, plays, a comic book and a TV pilot, with Thomas Kretschmann, that wasn’t picked up. Now the story makes it to TV with Demián Bichir as the father of the girl vampire (Madison Taylor Baez) who’s forever 12. Showtime, online Oct. 7, cable Oct. 9.

THE MIDNIGHT CLUB The latest from Mike Flanagan, whose atmospheric horror series (“The Haunting of Hill House,” “Midnight Mass”) have won a following on Netflix. Heather Langenkamp plays the doctor at a hospice where the patients like to tell one another scary stories. Netflix, Oct. 7.

BECOMING FREDERICK DOUGLASS The documentarian Stanley Nelson (“Attica,” “Freedom Riders”) fills in some important chapters in his epic yet quotidian history of Black life in America with this film and with “Harriet Tubman: Visions of Freedom” (Oct. 4), both directed by Nelson and Nicole London. PBS, Oct. 11.

CHAINSAW MAN Anticipation is running high in the anime world for the MAPPA animation studio’s adaptation of “Chainsaw Man,” a dark-comic, body-horror manga about a young devil hunter with a deadly appendage. Crunchyroll, Oct. 11.

SHERWOOD The cast of this BBC mystery series is a lengthy British-TV who’s who: David Morrissey, Lesley Manville, Claire Rushbrook, Philip Jackson, Joanne Froggatt, Terence Maynard, Kevin Doyle, Robert Glenister, Clare Holman, Lorraine Ashbourne, Adeel Akhtar, Pip Torrens and Mark Addy, among others. Morrissey is the detective investigating a bow-and-arrow murder in Robin Hood’s old Nottinghamshire haunts that brings up hatreds from a 1980s miners’ strike. BritBox, Oct. 11.

THE WINCHESTERS Jensen Ackles returns to the “Supernatural” universe, reassuming his role as the monster hunter Dean Winchester in this prequel series. This time Dean, in a supporting role, is tracking down the real story of the younger days of his mother and father (Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger), which sounds like a good strategy for avoiding pesky continuity questions. CW, Oct. 11

DOCUMENTARY NOW! One of TV’s greatest pleasures returns after a more than three-year hiatus. The fourth season, hosted, as always, by Dame Helen Mirren, will include sendups of “My Octopus Teacher,” “The September Issue,” “When We Were Kings” and Werner Herzog’s “Burden of Dreams.” IFC, Oct. 19.

FROM SCRATCH Zoe Saldana stars in a mini-series that crosses cultures — a Black American woman falls in love with a Sicilian chef during her Wanderjahr in Italy — and genres, mixing picturesque Euroromance and sorrowful survivor’s tale. Netflix, Oct. 21.

THE PERIPHERAL Scott B. Smith, who wrote the screenplay (based on his own novel) of the excellent 1998 thriller “A Simple Plan,” is the creator and showrunner of this series based on a dystopian, alternate-futures mystery by William Gibson; Chloë Grace Moretz stars; and Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan are among the executive producers. That’s an awful lot of bleak-noir experience. Amazon Prime Video, Oct. 21.

GUILLERMO DEL TORO’S CABINET OF CURIOSITIES Del Toro takes on the Alfred Hitchcock role, playing master of ceremonies for an eight-episode horror anthology. (A previous title included the words “Guillermo del Toro Presents.”) The first season’s directors include Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”), Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”) and Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”). Netflix, Oct. 25.

SHERMAN’S SHOWCASE Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin’s consistently clever, stealthily sophisticated, unabashedly nostalgic sendup of old-school variety shows finally returns for a second season. IFC, Oct. 26.

TRUE CRIME STORY: INDEFENSIBLE Back for a second season, the comedian Jena Friedman applies the adversarial techniques of topical late-night humor to the true-crime genre, in 20-minute episodes that are less investigations — the facts of the cases are generally pretty plain, at least in Friedman’s eyes — than expressions of darkly comic outrage. SundanceTV, Oct. 27.

BIG MOUTH Since Nick Kroll broke the third-dimensional wall in the Season 5 finale and had a heart-to-heart with his animated character, Nick Birch, will any of his castmates get to follow suit in the sixth season of this raunchy paean to puberty? The real-life John Mulaney would probably have some interesting things to say to his animated counterpart, randy Andy Glouberman. Netflix, Oct. 28.

MANIFEST A hit in reruns on Netflix after being canceled by NBC, this paranormal mystery-melodrama gets a fourth and final season at its streaming home. Netflix, Nov. 4.

DANGEROUS LIAISONS This new adaptation of the Choderlos de Laclos novel was announced nearly a decade ago, with Christopher Hampton, who had already based a play and a film on the novel, attached as writer once again. Hampton didn’t remain as the writer — he gets an executive producer credit — but the mini-series has arrived billed as the “origin story” of the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont. Apparently they weren’t always jaded monsters. Starz, Nov. 6.

MOOD Like Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) and Michaela Coel (“Chewing Gum”) before her, Nicole Lecky turns a hit one-woman play into a buzzy British TV series. She plays Sasha, a broke and unemployed young Londoner who finds herself in the potentially lucrative and liberating — and also potentially exploitative and dangerous — world of the influencer economy. BBC America, Nov. 6.

TULSA KING On the same night that Tyler Sheridan’s flagship show, “Yellowstone,” begins its fifth season, his portfolio of manly genre dramas grows with the addition of this mash-up of gangster story and neo-western. It’s also Sheridan’s latest action-hero reclamation project: Sylvester Stallone stars as a Mafia capo sent to oversee operations in the foreign territory of Tulsa, Okla. Paramount+, Nov. 13.

WELCOME TO CHIPPENDALES Robert Siegel, fresh off “Pam & Tommy,” and Jenni Konner of “Girls” are the showrunners of a mini-series starring Kumail Nanjiani as Steve Banerjee, the unlikely and eventually ill-fated founder of a male-stripping colossus. Hulu, Nov. 22.

WILLOW Ron Howard’s 1988 fantasy film “Willow” is not the first piece of intellectual property anyone would have predicted for a reboot, but when George Lucas is involved — he received “story by” credit on the film — anything can happen. Lucasfilm and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment are producing this sequel series; Warwick Davis, now 52, returns as the title character. Maybe Willow will be a more consistent spell caster than he was as a teenager. Disney+, Nov. 30.

I think this is the first year ever I don't plan to pick up a single broadcast network show. In fact, I think I'm down to only watching 4 scripted broadcast series at all this fall - 911, Ghosts, La Brea, and Abbott Elementary.

Excited for The Midnight Club, though, and Reboot

Interesting article on the social media reactions to the D23 panels.  I think 2019 completely changed the expectations surrounding the presentations.  Before, you lined up expecting trailers, exclusive footage and cast members.  Now people seem to think that every SDCC or D23 is going to be Feige revealing his 5 year plan.

This is a good article, and I'd love for Richard Newby to do a follow-up interviewing both people disappointed with the panel as well as those dopes who claimed announcements would be made that never were.  This type of thing, as he says in the article, isn't new: back in the wild wild west days of the internet, sites like Aint It Cool News ran all sorts of nonsense 'scoops' about the Star Wars prequels, and other scripts in development.  Prominent internet film writer Drew McWeeny was actually BANNED from Skywalker Ranch BITD due to negative coverage and posting spoilers of the prequels!  This is nothing new, but for some reason fans are seemingly taking this stuff MORE serious than they did years ago, even though it feels more like common knowledge that social media is garbage for legit news unless coming from a known source.

I personally can't fathom how anyone could be upset by the D23 Expo film panel.  Fans in attendance got to see:
* a whole slew of footage and announcements about upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series
* Indiana Jones V teaser trailer (this is THE footage I'm dying to see ASAP)
* lots of footage of the AVATAR sequel (THIS is what I was hoping would've been at Comic-Con, as James Cameron brought THX Sound & Dolby Digital 3D to Hall H just for his original AVATAR footage)
* a TON of Marvel Studios footage and announcements that was made IN ADDITION to the Hall H SDCC stuff revealed just 7 weeks ago!

Heck, if all I cared about was the Marvel stuff, how amazing is it that in 7 weeks Kevin Feigi and Marvel Studios made two significant marketing presentations that revealed a LOT of new information/footage?!  Essentially, audience members who went to one or the other (as I was only able to attend the SDCC Hall H panel) felt like they got cool stuff at either panel, and fans who went to both events got double the reveals.  I mean, how great is it that Marvel Studios is creating so much stuff over the next couple of years that they have so much unique footage to show us at two events?!

Heh I was one of those hoping that the Fantastic Four cast would be revealed. But I'm pretty sure they're not talking about fans in attendance being disappointed. It's the fans waiting to hear more announcements like the F4 cast being revealed who are the disappointed ones. And it's not Marvel's fault in any way, it's the leakers who leak fake news that are creating false hope that results in the fans being disappointed. D23 wasn't livestreamed (minus that one TikTokker) so most fans who didn't attend didn't get to see the cool trailers and see the casts in person. All they were able to see/hear were just twitter updates so that's why D23 ended up being a big dud for non-attendants. They were expecting D23 to be another SDCC as far as announcements go.

Thanks for your opinion of the panel!  I was wondering what people in the room actually thought, as it definitely seemed like you got plenty.  I know at SDCC, people were complaining about the WB panel while I thought it was fine.

with the demise of Arrowverse, the end of Walking Dead, and Archer probably nearing its end,  I was wondering what would fill Ballroom 20 and Hall H in future cons.  Having seen Interview with the Vampire, House of the Dragon and Rings of Power.  With Mayfair Witches debuting in a few months, looks like we've got a good slate to keep us interested.

EXCLUSIVE: Comcast’s Spectacor division is pulling the plug on video game-centric network G4 TV, whose early incarnation in the 2000s remains a cultural touchstone for many millennials, just a year after its relaunch.

In a memo set to be sent out to all employees, Spectacor CEO Dave Scott explained that the company’s investment and efforts to revive the network just didn’t gain traction.

A few dozen employees and contract workers are affected by the shutdown. Comcast said it will assist them with outplacement and consider some for internal opportunities.

the NYT took a look at what each year's top critics thought was the top 10/100 movies of all time.

It's ver interesting to see how taste has changed over the years. PLUS, there's a lot of movies in the listing i have not seen before.

FWIW MAGNUM FORCE is IMO the best Dirty Harry sequel (I kind of think the others aren't very good, actually: the original & MAGNUM FORCE are the only good ones)

LADY SNOWBLOOD is an outstanding, kind of under-rated martial arts film that Tarantino took much inspiration from for KILL BILL vol. 1

This list somehow misses Fellini's ROMA, and LAST TANGO IN PARIS (unless I missed it - obviously a possibility).  ROMA is a hair shy of masterpiece, and maybe would be a masterpiece if it was directed by most other directors.  LAST TANGO IN PARIS is very infamous for Brando's incredibly emotional performance

A dress worn by Carrie Fisher in the original Star Wars film could sell for $2 million at auction. According to The Wrap the dress, which was worn by Fisher's Princess Leia in the final scene of Star Wars, was long believed to have been destroyed and ultimately discovered in a London attic belonging to one of the film's original crew members. The dress has since been restored — a process that was done by hand over an 8-month period — and is now set to go up for auction by Propstore Auctions. Bidding on the auction will begin at 8 a.m. PT on Wednesday, June 28th.

The strike will be over as of 12:01 a.m. PT on Thursday, November 9, we hear, putting an end to more than seven months of labor unrest in Hollywood that saw the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA hit the picket lines in the industry’s first joint strike in more than 60 years.

Culminating a dramatic day of studio earnings results and deadline ultimatums, the actors guild’s 17-member negotiating committee unanimously voted this afternoon to recommend a tentative agreement to the SAG-AFTRA board.

I live 45 miles away from the nearest movie theater so I have to wait for DVDs or Streaming to see films, but I am looking forward to this one.

I've been on the fence on Ghostbusters. Is the after credit scene worth staying for?

It's "fun," but mileage may vary.  It's more of a giggle-esque moment than any sort of integral thing (I think the previous film's mid-credits scene w/Murray & Weaver was a LOT more fun, and the post-credits scene was more sentimental & integral to setting up future stories, as was paid off in the new film).

I'm also on the fence about Ghostbusters as a franchise that seems to have one legit-great first film, and different degrees of "entertaining" with the sequels.  To get into the mood for the new movie I did spend time last weekend watching the other Ghostbusters films, and I still may think that Ghostbusters II is the worst sequel, with the reboots being either "fine" or "good-not-great" depending on my mood that day.  All have some good moments and legit funny moments, but all the sequels also have their problems.
I do think if they continue this franchise as-is, with similar characters and whatnot, they need to maybe pair down the cast a bit.  But that's just me; we'll see how this one does at the box office.
