Grocery Stores and Grocery Delivery
« on: May 26, 2022, 10:14:51 AM »
Wondering if there are different options for grocery shopping and delivery of groceries.  Recognizing that quite a bit has changed in the past few years.  We know about Ralphs and have had fun shopping in person there. Having a bit of a challenge finding out about grocery delivery to hotels.
It is 2024, and I am still asking...where's my flyin' car??!! @fannishmarcia

Ralph's is hard to beat.  We stock up there Tuesday night before the con.

I was just reading about a store called Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. It is at 1002 Market Street in Gaslamp. Never been there. May be new-ish?

Its been there for like 10 years now. Its kinda out of the way of everything happening with SDCC so not many notice it or go anywhere near it.

Never been I’m local so never had a reason to from my understanding they sell surplus food items so the inventory is always changing and that’s why prices are low.

In 2019 I did a Prime Now (now Amazon Fresh) delivery to our hotel. But they wouldn't let him deliver it to the room so I had to come down to the lobby to get it.

There is a Smart & Final on G Street between 14th and 15th (720 15th Street--about four blocks from Park & Market trolley station). Smart & Final sells a mix of bulk or large-pack items and traditional groceries. Good for boxes of granola bars, candies and large packs of water or other beverages. Worth a look if you are buying for a large group.

They're open until 10 PM.

Smart & Final is near an Albertson's (655 14th Street) so you could visit both stores fairly easily. Albertson's is open until 11:00 PM, and they do have a grocery delivery service.

I think the smart and final and albertsons are the area where all the homeless hang out. We passed by there on the shuttle from hotel circle. I would not go there lol

I'll leave it up to the members here to decide if the presence of unhoused people in downtown San Diego would deter them from shopping for groceries.

That's a fair comment.

There are also a few small Italian markets on India Street in Little Italy.

I really enjoyed the selections at the deli counter in Filippi's Cash & Carry--they have an assortment of Italian cookies, meats, cheeses and fresh torpedo rolls to make your own sandwiches. Don't worry--the deli has a separate line/register from the very long line to order pizza or get a table.

Mona Lisa Foods has a full-service deli counter making sandwiches to order.

Instacart, Amazon, Walmart are popular options for delivery. If people are staying in Mission Valley, there’s a trader joe’s and Food 4 less as well as target there by hotel circle.
