Not a traditional steakhouse but Fogo De Chao is a great option if you want to try different cuts.

How can we add  Cine' Cafe to the list?  Home of the NEW YORK sandwich (Corned Beef, Pastrami, Swiss, Sauerkraut, 1000 Island & Mustard.)

Also of note, this place sells liquor, red bulls, beer, some other stuff if you are staying nearby and is very useful if you need to grab supplies.

I added a column to the Google Doc with the number of favorable mentions. I still have to do some reconciling of the data between the review and my Google doc, but as a quick and dirty method, it's fine for now.

Here are the top places still open (#1 was Burger Lounge, but that location has closed, but there are others in the SD)
Restaurant name --> Mentions
1. Broken Yolk --> 22 (surprise! lol)
2. Lolitas Restaurant --> 13
3. Tin Fish - Gaslamp --> 12
4. La Puerta --> 11
5. Café 222 --> 10
5. Hodad's --> 10
5. Ralph's - Downtown San Diego --> 10
6. Lucky's Lunch Counter --> 9
7. Rei do Gado Brazilian --> 8
7. The Blind Burro --> 8
7. Werewolf --> 8
8. Puesto --> 7
8. The Cheesecake Factory --> 7

9. Donut Bar --> 6
9. Hash House A Go Go --> 6
9. Subway - Gaslamp --> 6
10. BASIC Urban Kitchen + Bar --> 5
10. Bub's at the Ballpark --> 5
10. Gaslamp Strip Club Steakhouse (Closed for remodel) --> 5
10. Joe's Crab Shack --> 5
10. Juniper & Ivy --> 5
10. Nobu - San Diego --> 5

I have been thinking about ways we could streamline future recommendations - maybe make a set of threads like we have for hotel reviews (but keep this thread for general discussion). Just a thought.

I was looking at Tuesday/Wednesday for me and a couple buddies but I'm holding off...they want a CC for the reservation and I'm waiting to hear back why/cancellation policies.

The restaurant guide is not officially posted (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login), but they did have a preliminary one posted on the Toucan blog (it's a but hard to read there)

I don't know that they are doing the coupons on Visit San Diego this year, although they mention them in the guide.

Did anybody discover any new (or new to them) spots this year?

We did our usual Cafe 222 stop on Thursday morning - it was wonderful, if a bit pricey. (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login)
Friday morning, we had our usual HBF breakfast burrito - they also seemed a bit pricey, I guess it was those purple potatoes 😅 (and there was no outside booth)
The rest of the time, we ate breakfast at Lucky's Lunch Counter - it was so convenient to the Omni, and more affordable than 222. And super delicious. We plan to try it for lunch next time (I know it is way more crowded then).

Our go to lunch spot this year was a new find for us: City Tacos. Also super convenient to the Omni (it's a ballpark place). The first go was a bit slower, but there were two big orders ahead, The tacos were definitely worth the wait! The Mexicali was especially delicious! When we went the 2nd time, we only got that one. Definitely keeping this on our list. We did also hit Subway, and HBF again (we were going to a panel).

Also a tradition for us (okay - this is only the 2nd time LOL) - we had dinner on Thursday at Monzu Fresh Pasta - as delicious as we remembered. We were able to get a table on the fly, but will make a reservation next time. It is not a super fancy restaurant, but it is not big. We both had Tagliatelle alla Bolognese, and it was so good. The waiter called my husband Superman because he wolfed his down so quickly. Paired with the Prosecco they carry, it was a wonderful meal.

For the concert on Friday, we walked to the House of Blues. Our original plan was to eat at Valentine's Mexican, but they close at 6pm, so we had to find something on the way that wouldn't be too crowded. We chose Gaslamp Burger. It was no Burger Lounge (and we weren't super hungry), but my burger was decent. We were a little worried when we went in because it wasn't crowded, but it turned out okay. My husband got the BBQ chicken loaded fries, and it was fine (again, he was not hungry, so that may have affected our judgement).

Finally, on Saturday, we were beat, so I suggested sandwiches from Cine Cafe. We went with the grab and go varieties with salad and fruit on the side. They were really good - I am guessing the fresh made sandwiches would be even better. Also grabbed a bottle of sparkling wine to go with it. The only issue with that was they had the super cheap and the super expensive - something in between would have been nice. We went cheap, and it was fine with our sandwiches.

We went to two places we hadn't been before:

  • Huntress:  A "mostly" steak place on 5th Avenue with Asian influences.  It was good, but probably too pricey for the average fan.
  • Il Sogno Italiano:  Italian, obviously.  The food was your standard Italian fare.  I had a pasta with bolognese sauce that I couldn't finish because of the huge portion.  I wouldn't go back because the noise level was very high given they had a live jazz band playing at full volume in the middle of the restaurant.  We couldn't talk and hear each other.

Besides that, I went to places I've been to before:  Seville (always satisfying), Water Grill (great seafood), and STK for a terrific steak dinner.   The latter made major improvements since 2019.

I definitely want to give a shout out to Richard Walker's Pancake House.

I know it was on the list that was put together for this posting, but if You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login  hadn't invited me there with his friends, I never would have gone.  Great breakfast and only a short walk from my hotel (MMM).

Thanks for your new places and links @Angology I'm happy to hear you liked Lucky's, it's always the first place I recommend to people downtown. Next year try lunch, it's every bit as delicious!!
