I'm new here and this is my first time creating a new thread in a forum, so let's see how this goes
I see a lot of posts alluding to the careers of members here, which has me curious just what everyone does for a living.
So my question is: "What do you do for a living?" (Company names not required, just line of work)
I'll start, I am a Nuclear I&C Technician. Basically I calibrate/repair instrumentation in nuclear power plants.
Next?

Ugh my browser does not want to cooperate w/me today... I am a director for a local (but nationwide) consulting group and I run their "Content, Collaboration and Cloud" practice, with a specific focus on the Microsoft technologies in that space, like SharePoint (on-premises) and Office 365 (cloud). I also run a user group out of the local Microsoft office that focuses on those same technologies. So every time someone here says "I'll make a Google doc for that" a little piece of me dies :( j/k :) Next!

I have a really glamorous job in the accounts payable office of a municipal government. Basically, I review and enter invoices for payment, get mad at employees for paying sales tax, and I also do all the travel approvals and expense reconciliations for City employees (keep your receipts!).
Not really a dream job, but I like it, it's pretty stress-free (most of the time), and steady. I used to work in the City's utility billing office. I was the person who decided whose water got shut off. It was... not pleasant.

I work in the school system in Maryland....Attendance Officer and In-school suspension monitor (I babysit the bad kids) ::)

I'm a Materials and Component Engineer for a Contract Manufacturer (we build boards for other companies). Every part that you see on a circuit board has a list of approved manufacturers. I manage those lists with my customers. Been there for 20 years, and am the only one left of the original team (the rest of the team resides in Guadalajara). So, I am now the team lead too.
Super glamorous!

I do tech support for my company's customers. It can be stressful at times since we are growing and we are getting bigger deals/customers but having free lunch everyday and free snacks/drinks makes up for it (also there are a lot of dogs at the office, which is a huge plus)

I work in the Technology Audit arena. Wore a few hats in the IT space over the years but more on the functional/process side - not too techie but can be dangerous. Also get involved in fraud investigations from time-to-time.
Mostly firefightering, providing advice, and pointing out issues - interesting stuff sometimes.

I'm the Business Manager of a New Car Dealership.

I'm a paralegal generally specializing in litigation in California. Mainly civil but I have a fair bit of experience in criminal defense as well, from a previous job. However, my current firm doesn't handle criminal cases, so at least I often don't deal with as many clients that just make you think "wtf" when you read the statements. Of course that doesn't mean I don't do that all the time still. At least now it's not usually because of my clients but instead the conduct of the other party.
Basically that means, I'm the one that drafts hundreds of pages of discovery requests, answers them, and motions and such constantly. I'm one of the main contacts for opposing counsel and the person that they probably hate because they know I'm the person sending hundreds of pages every week.
Currently I'm not at work due to severe medical issues and I'll probably not be back to it until the new year.
-
I'm a graduate student about halfway through a Ph.D program in Communications. So aside from preparing for my comprehensive examination and eventual dissertation research, I either serve as a teaching assistant or a graduate instructor for undergrad classes.

I'm a high school Chemistry teacher. (No, I don't have a cool side job making meth.) I've taught all levels: regular, Pre-AP, AP, and IB. Going back to Pre-AP & IB Chem next year.

I have other jobs for when I have no film/tv contracts 1) Verifying Commercial insurance for outpatient services at a hospital. 2) Marketing for Hot Topic & PRN for my local HT store and 3) I'm a Genealogist who does research for all kinds of families. I offer no charge for loved ones of Victims of 9/11 unless I'm required to travel. I offer no charge for Holocaust survivors or relatives of survivors & victims unless I'm required to travel.

I was a horse trainer for the US Army Caisson section at Ft Sam, we do the funerals with the horses just like the ones you see at Arlington National Cemetery. I've been training horses professionally since I was 16. But, I got cancer in my spine and lost my ability to use my legs, hard to ride without them 😉 I'm now going back to school to finish my Masters & Phd in Anthropology Archaeology, specialize in Mesolithic through Iron Age.

They used to keep the deer away but since they grew fearless, they decided to just let them do what they do naturally. From 2013-2015 I lived less than 3 miles from the body farm. The deer actually wonder around the neighborhoods close to the campus. They'll walk right into a yard or apartment complex & just ignore people. It's like they have no fear.

I work in the research department at a major advertising agency. More specifically, we are a "media agency". We just plan and buy media for our clients. We don't make the ads.
This is a good job for SDCC. My agency has some TV and movie clients and it qualifies me for a Trade Professionals badge. I also can get some invitations to things, like the Wired Lounge. ::)

I came in in a really unusual way but the best way I’ve seen young writers break into the industry is getting hired on as a writers assistant for a tv series. It’s terrible pay and a lot of work but you’re in the room with the writers. Some showrunners even allow writers assistants to pitch into the show or even assign them an episode later down the line. Eventually good assistants are hired as staff writers. There are Facebook groups I believe that you can join that announce showrunners who are hiring.
Another good way is submitting scripts to screenwriting contests. That’s a great way to get them noticed!
-
I would venture to say the Excel and spreadsheet game on the forum is top notch.
