Title: Badge Pick Up 2013
Post by: ice9 on February 18, 2013, 08:57:13 AM
For those who have been before how is the badge pick up on Wed?

I am flying in and the cheaper flight in puts me on the ground at 6pm. Not ideal but it is 150$ cheaper than flying in at 1pm. I figure i may not be able to get over to badge pick up before 7pm.......

I've been to some other cons that badge pick up was quite a nightmare. Do they move folks through pretty quickly? If you are in line will they give out badges until they are done or at 8:30 will they turn people away?

Thank you for any advice or information.

I have never done it at the Town & Country, but I hear it can be quite hectic.

At the convention center it goes very fast, so if you're coming down for Preview Night you should have no problem.

You may want to check and confirm how long the badge pickup is open.

I've always picked up my badges at the convention center and have had no problems ever.  Always moves fast.

If you are picking up your badge at the convention center, be prepared for another typical long line first thing in the morning.  I got there an hour before it opened and was about 200 people back.  The GREAT news is once the line starts moving it ZOOMS along.  They really have their act together and once I got upstairs it took me all of 3 minutes to get my badge and into the con.  Looking for more of the same luck this year.

Thank you all.
I noticed they stay open 8:30 so i'm hoping that will be enough.

Unfortunately we did not get preview night passes :( , but we got passes so im happy with that.

Town and Country was a bit of a mess a couple years back but generally speaking, if you don't have to be among the first to get into the convention center, once it opens up, the lines move really quickly (if there are even any lines by the time you get there).

If you are picking up a 4-day with preview at the convention center, the line can get massively long and it looks scary, but it goes very quick.  They have the system down.

This is 2011 information so it might be outdated, but:  If you are picking up other badges at the Town & Country hotel, the line goes slower because they don’t have as many badge stations set up.  The big problems that you will have from 4 to 7 pm are:  getting there due to traffic for badge pickup and finding parking once you get there.

I believe (but am not 100% sure) that they cap the line before 8:30 otherwise they would never be able to shut down.

My bro-in-law picked his badge up last year at Town and Country on Preview Night (he had 4-day w/out).  He went around 5:00 ish, and I guess it only took about 20 minutes total, and that included being dropped off in the wrong parking lot and having to find the badge pick-up!  I heard it was a nightmare in 2011, but last year seemed a LOT smoother, based on by bro's experience.

They won't turn people away in line, and they won't have to.  The line moves INCREDIBLY quick at the Convention Center.  Even if you show up 45 minutes or so after the start of badge pick-up (after the initial crowd gets through), you'll likely walk right through the line without stopping.  I'm always super impressed with how smooth badge pickup always is at the convention center (REALLY hope that didn't just jinx it for 2013  :P ), and I think even if you pick up your badge mid-afternoon, grab dinner downtown, then walk into Preview Night you'll have zero problems getting your badge.
It is a bigger line each morning (at least Thursday-Saturday), which kinda sucks if you need to get a badge and then get in line for a panel or something.  But once the line starts moving it moves fairly quickly.

Definitely one of the perks of a 4 day is pickup on Wednesday. Last yr they started early so there were no lines to pick up badges, just a long line to get in but by then, everyone already had their badges so they were giddy w/ excitement to get started.

This is what we used to do all the time: pick up the badge and the go for late lunch/early dinner in the gaslamp before heading back to our hotel to change for Preview Night.

Now we do spa time just after lunch, then go to the convention center to pick up our badges, then go back to the hotel room to change for Preview Night. ;)

SO much a superior option  :P
I live about 20 minutes north of the convention center, so I'm not sure it's worth it for me to pick up badge, drive home & jump in the hot tub & eat dinner, then drive back for Preview Night  :-\
I might just stay at home for awhile, eat dinner, and THEN come to Preview Night after dinner.  I'm not sure, but I'm thinking a big change this year with how I usually do things at Comic-Con (BUT, the way I usually do things yields great returns: awesome swag, getting into all the panels I want, cool after-hour events, scoring the exclusives I & my son want, etc - change = scary :P )

Yep! :D I get together with a bunch of girlfriends every year for the Con, and this is often the only time we'll see each other (certainly the only time we're all together) before Con. A few years ago we began the 'spa time' tradition on Wednesday afternoon and it was so much fun we've been doing it ever since! ;)

Question - the badge collection instructions say you can pick up multiple day badges at the earliest day.

you are able to collect thu badges on Wed. however, I have 3 single day badges. does that mean i can collect all badges on Wed, or I have to collect all badges on THU?

How do you line up at badge collection when you want to line up for Hall H or others? how fast from badge collection is it to get in?

If you have single day badges, you CAN pick them up on Wednesday (if you have a Thursday) only at T&C. All the badges will be printed for you when you pick up BUT you still need the badge HOLDERS (color varies by day) and that can only be picked up at the convention center. The only badges that can be picked up at the convention center on Wed are 4 Day WITH PN.

See grid for more details.

http://www.comic-con.org/cci/badge-pickup

When you get to the convention center in the morning, you'll see 4 lines. There will be a line for Volunteers near one end. There is a line for Hall H under the tents on the other end. You'll see 2 different lines that start middle-ish of the center. One is for the people picking up badges. The other line is for the people who already have badges to get in and are either headed to the exhibit floor or to BR 20 (and other panel rooms).

Badge pickup moves pretty fast once the line actually gets moving - the difficult part is just figuring out where the line starts/ends and security doesn't always know. Keep your eyes peeled for where the flow of people go and if they are or are not wearing badges and you'll be able to figure out which line to go to.

If you do not have a badge and are trying to get into a panel, you'd need to coordinate with friends to save a spot in line for you (some folks get really upset about people saving spots but me personally, it's not a big deal if it's like 1-2 people).

Don't know if that answered your question or made things more confusing!  :o

So, I can pick up all 3 badges on Wed at T&C, but I have to collect the holders on the individual days? OK that makes sense

So each day (I have Thursday and Friday badges) I have to get a badge holder, or on Thusday will they give me both?

I remember last year they were much more clear re: badge holders. Stated that you can pick up all badge holders in a separate line at the convention center once you have your badges. Assuming the same but will look for confirmation.

There's 3 of us going this year, and we've got two 4 day with preview and one 4 day without preview.  So, if I'm reading the badge pick up grid right, and we want to pick up all the badges on Wednesday we'll have to go all the way over to T&C to get one badge, then go all the way back to pick up the other 2 badges? Ugh.

Any suggestions on the fastest way to achieve this?  We'd like to get a chance at some of the exclusives on preview night but we also really don't want to line up on Thursday morning in the pick up line for the other badge.

If you're going to Preview Night, you will have to be at the convention center anyways.

We are in the same situation as you, LadyS. We have 4 people with Preview Night and one without. What we will do is have everyone except the one person who does not have Preview Night pick up their badge at the convention center on Wednesday. Then the other person will pick hers up at the convention center on Thursday morning. If it turns out that we want to line up for a panel that morning, we will hold a spot for our friend while she does the badge pickup.

Split up. There's no reason to stick together when you can't during preview night anyway.

My first SDCC was 2012, and I did my pick up for 4 x Single Day tickets on Wed at T&C. Flew in from NY, arrived at around 11am, had a nice lunch, checked in etc. before deciding to pick up my Thur-Sun badges at around 4pm. Frankly, the most tedious aspect was getting to T&C from Marriott (next to the Convention Centre). The lines for the shuttle bus were extremely long and my friends and I had to wait two turns before boarding, then we spent 30 min in the sluggish traffic to get to T&C.

However, once we got there, despite the long lines it took only 25 min to receive our badges and bags. The process was fuss-free and the staff wasted no time checking our IDs of the initial frenzy of people trying to trade bags right after receiving them. Then it was another long wait to get on the shuttle bus back to downtown SD. :)

My best friend arrived in SD only on Friday morning and needed to collect her badges for Fri, Sat and Sun. Initially we thought that she'd have to pick them up daily at 8.30am, but turned out she managed to collect all 3 of them on Friday afternoon - the lady issuing badges just printed all of them for her so there was no need for her to go through this process again over the weekend.

Does anyone have any tips on driving to Town and Country on Wednesday to pick up badges? Like where is closest T&C parking lot to badge pick-up which I've read has been in the Atlas Ballroom (I know there is a parking charge)? It looks like on the satellite map there are parking lots in front and in back of the Town and Country. Does parking fill up? I've heard there can be traffic around the T&C Wednesday afternoon. If so, what times is traffic the worst and is there a way to avoid it (alternate route)?

I am not an expert at this, but I believe that Town & Country charges for parking and from what I have seen for other events, parking is limited.  There is a mall that is nearby that you could potentially park at (Fashion Valley Mall, I think), but keep in mind that they say that you can't park for off site events.  So be sure to go into the mall, buy a pack of gum or soda and keep the receipt, and then walk back out to the T&C.  Don't go straight from your car to the T&C.  It is not a huge walk, maybe 2-3 lengths of the convention center or so?

I hope these wishy-washy answers help.

HEYO TJ! Yes it's great to be back! I'd kinda fallen off the Internet radar for a while because of my ridiculous work schedule and some travelling to Europe, but now I'm trying to get my work/life balance in check and plan for SDCC '13 again. Second time's gonna be even better now that I am much more informed - thanks to this forum as well!

The traffic is indeed pretty bad on Wednesday afternoon - it gets really sluggish from 3pm-5pm especially. I still think the most convenient and cost efficient way would be to find cheaper parking near one of the free shuttles and use that service to go to T&C and back. :)

Yeah, I got the impression from my bro-in-law it took him longer to walk from the parking lot to T&C than it did for him to get through the line to get his badge.

FWIW my wife dropped him off on the other side of the building, maybe by the mall, so they avoided paying for parking: buddy system works again  :P

That's a good idea if you're staying somewhere near the shuttle system.
How late is T&C open for badges?  No need getting there during rush hour to try and pick em up if they're open same hours as convention center.

When I went in 2011 it was crazy over at T&C, so glad to hear it was better last year. We took the free bus from the convention center and that was almost the worst/slowest part, so I definitely think I'm going to get the trolley this year - not least because as the bus was driving away I saw that there's a Cheesecake Factory in the mall - this little Brit will be visiting there this time, for sure!!

Plus all my times in San Diego and I've never been on the trolley - everything has always been walking distance for me so I've never got around to it. I feel like I'm missing out!

Yup you'll see some banners. It's towards the A-B side of the convention center. Regular attendees are towards the other end.

Last year, if you had all four individual days, they combined it to one 4-day pass (without preview night).

If you had 3 days only, then you would have to have three badges with three separate badge holders.  Each day is color-coded with the name of the day on it.

You can however pick up the printed badges (the paper tickets, basically) at one time, if you have more than one day, but you would have to go to the convention center, go to the registration area, and pick up your individual badge holders.  This is, of course, you have a Thursday badge and can thus pick up your badge at Town and Country Hotel and Resort.

I want to echo others and say picking badges up from T&C was smooth last year. The year before it was a little more hectic, but not bad. Both times we were a little delay getting into San Diego and we drove straight to T&C to pick up tickets. It was $10 to park if I remember correctly, and finding a spot wasn't bad (it took a few minutes to get a spot). The overall traffic was a little hectic. It took about 30-40 minutes from the last part of the freeway to get parked.

1. If you were picking up 3 badges, you can get them all at once (assuming they are adjacent days) but you would still have to go to the registration in Sails each day to get the correct holder? Am I understanding this correctly?
2. When you recieve your bar coded email(s) will you recieve one for each day? It was that way in 2011, I remember getting 4 seperate emails with a bar code for each day, however it appears I read somewhere that people now recieved just 1 barcde no matter how many days they purchased. Can anyone confirm this?

Should just be one barcode now. All the badges will be printed at the time you pick up the first one but you will need to go to a separate area to pick up the individual badge holders. The way it's worded seems to imply that you can pick them all up at once.

Yes, definitely only one bar code now.  I actually had three days last year (they sent me a bar code in their registration e-mail). However, I managed to get a Saturday badge in the first resale, and when they sent out the registration e-mail again, the same bar code was used.  The only thing different was that four days were "linked" or "connected" to my bar code.

And... then they made the four individual days into a 4-day badge without preview night.

I suspect it should be similar for this year as well, for anyone who is concerned about this.

Hope this helps. ^-^d

Guess now is as good a time as any to provide the link...

http://www.comic-con.org/cci/badge-pickup

4 single day badges will be combined into a 4 day badge again.

They seem to have taken out the part re: the badge holders. I assume pickup instructions will be sent again closer to the date but to recap:

4 Day w/ PN = Convention Center
4 Day w/o PN OR Thursday badge = Town and Country on Wed or Convention Center on Thursday.

Single day badge(s) = Convention Center on the first day you have a badge for.

IF you have a Thursday badge (not part of 4 Day), I would highly recommend you try and pick it up at T&C on Wed so that you save yourself the time in line on Thurs morning and can queue up immediately for Hall H or BR 20 or wherever you want to be.

1) Last year we only had 2 days- Thursday and Friday. They gave us both the paper badges at T&C on Wednesday afternoon.  We have to go to the sails pavilion on Thursday to get the Friday badge holder. It's not as bad as it seems. It took less than 10 minutes. We will have to do the same thing this year because we are skipping Sunday (I want to go to Sea World).

2) You only get 1 bar code. It should have all of the individual days listed.

You know, it seems like they should do away with selling 4 day badges altogether. Just sell individual days, and then sell Preview Night as a separate 'day' too. Then if anyone has all 4 days (or all 4 days plus Preview Night) they can 'convert' to a single '4 day pass' at badge pickup, like they're already doing.

Do you think that would streamline the selling process, if all you saw were the 4 days (plus a Preview Night option)? Plus then people wouldn't freak out that 'all 4 day badges are gone'.

enough non computer savvy people who could make an error and not select all 4 days in their haste. don't see advantage in not offering 4 day.

Mostly I'm thinking flexibility. People wouldn't rush to snap up '4 day badges' just because they're there, or because they want Preview Night. And they wouldn't freak out as much during the sale with '4 day badges are gone' announcements, because there wouldn't be any.

I'm not sure I buy the 'not enough computer savvy people' argument. If you get into the waiting room and through to the purchase area, you're computer savvy enough. Plus they could add a 'select all' option if they wanted.

Honestly I see no difference between 4 single days and a 4-day WO PN. I've heard in the past there was a discount but it's gone now.  I seriously don't know why people freak out when all 4 day barges are gone but can still get all 4 single days.

I think that people freak out because they think that they have to pick up their badge each day with single days, but comic con has made it where you can pick up all the badges at once.  I would be surprised if CCI changed that pick up process.

My immediate thought would be that it would not matter, but after some thinking about it, if every day including preview night was sold seperately, then in the end there would likely be more badges for more different people... think about the people who have no intention to attend all 5 days, but purchase the 4-day with preview. I would imagine there are many people out there that would like to have preview night but do not want a Sunday badge... going home early, just too tired, etc. I read somewhere that someone has a 4-day w/ preview but would be on the golf course all day Friday. Various posts have stated people want to take a day a do the Walking Dead and Nerd HQ and other events around town on certain days.

I do not think there now there is any difference between 4 single days and a 4-day w/o preview, although there are still enough people out there that still think they need to pick up a badge each day (for 2, 3 or 4 singles) and would rather just pick up 1 badge so they go right for the 4-day badge...

It could be a good thing.

I agree with you 100% because I have to be honest. We had no intention of going on Sunday because I want to visit Sea World but we would have purchased the 4 day W PN just to be able to go in Wednesday.  Once PN sold out we just got the single day tickets and skipped Sunday.  More people would get to go if all tickets, including PN, were sold individually.

I think CCI wants to reward the people who are the most desirable attendees with an opportunity to see preview night and the most desirable attendees are the ones who are interested enough to come all four days. They don't want to waste preview night on someone who comes for one day so I don't think you'll see them splitting it off from the 4 day badge.

If the goal is to make preview night more available I've had that solution for a long time. Charge a lot more for badges that include preview night.

what about still having four day w/preview, then just get rid of the four day w/out, and only have individual days if the four day with preview is sold out?

Lots of good ideas. I personally like to go to Preview Night but 2 out of the last 3 years did NOT go on Saturday. Needed a day off to recover. I know it's not a large number, but I'm sure there are a bunch of people like me who have the 4 Day w/Preview Nite but do not go all 5 days. For every incident that happens, that's 1 more badge that could have been sold for that day and one more person who could have gone. In my case, since Saturday is THE most popular day, you know how nice that would have been for someone. Unfortunately, the only way to go to Preview Night is to buy the 4 day w/PN so what can you do? So the idea of selling Preview Night as a seperate day is a very interesting one.

This year will be the first year without a 4 day pass for me and I'm okay with that. In the pre-sale  my cousin and I got Thursday and Sunday and after it was over I starting thinking maybe this is a good thing. In previous years I got up early to get in line at some insane hour,  1:00am to 6:00am usually for a panel I really wanted to see. It's great if you have buddies who want to go to the same panel as you and want to get in line at the same time, but usually what happens is there are people who want to go to that same panel but don't want to go at the same time, sure sometimes it works out and you can save a spot in line for them. But sometimes you go it alone hoping to hook up with your friends later in the panel which has all it's own problems (how do you find someone in a sea of people in Ballroom 20 or Hall H).

And what happens half the time is that you spend the whole day by yourself waiting for one panel, something that could have been accomplished by watching a youtube video, (well except for any video clips). One of the reason I still go to Comic Con is the friends I get to see, but most are ones you have some kind of relationship with (Podcast, fan group, something) , sure you do meet so people at panels but for the most part that is fleeting at best.

So with that in mind I was not going to sweat getting Fri and Saturday, I tried to get tickets for other people but failed miserably , did not even get into the waiting room, of course three different friends got in a offered to get me tickets  ;D and I got Saturday and my cousin got Friday, there was a mix up on what day someone got me.

So Friday is my relaxing day and hopefully I'll be able to do some meetups and/or volunteer at "Geek and Sundry" or "Nerd HQ"  , I know someone who volunteers at Geek and Sundry , they basically got to party with Joss Whedon before he went to the Firefly 10th anniversary panel line, the night before the panel.

Hey everyone!  Quick question, and I'm 99.9% sure the answer is no, but we have four members in our group with four day passes and one person with Saturday/Sunday passes.  Is it possible for our friend with the Saturday/Sunday passes to recieve them any time before badge registration on Saturday?  We were all really hoping to make it to Hall H, and don't think it would be possible for him unless we somehow picked his up at a prior point.  Thanks!

No, but your friend should be able to pick up his badge while you are in the Hall H line holding his spot.

Awesome, this was the follow-up question I was about to ask.  People don't see this as line cutting?  I just don't see any way he would be able to get into Hall H, even if he was the first person in line for registration come Saturday.

Yes, exactly. You guys get there at 6 am and line up for HallH. Then at 7 am, your friend goes over to badge pickup line. At 8-8:30-ish he gets his badge, then returns to join you in the Hall H line. As long as he's one person, it's not a big deal. Explain to the people in line behind you what's going on. The issue is if a whole group of people show up and join in line late in the game.

4 day w/o preview and thursday can be picked up at t&c. and yes they will have your single day badges for the first day badge you have so for your example, you can get your thurs and fri at t&c.

Basically, it means that if you have 4-day w/o Preview Night or a Thursday badge, you can go to the Town and Country for pick-up.

Now, if you have a Thursday badge and a Friday badge, for example, you can pick up your Thursday (printed) badge and Thursday badge holder at the Town and Country on Wednesday.  The Thursday badge holder has "Thursday" on it.  However, you will only get the printed paper part of your Friday badge.

So, you would have to get your Friday badge holder (with "Friday" on it) from the Sails Pavilion registration counters at the convention center.  At this point, you already have your printed Friday badge from Wednesday.  Thus, on Thursday, you can get your Friday badge holder.

Now, if you only have a Friday badge, then you wouldn't be able to go to the Town and Country on Wednesday for badge pick-up.  You would have to wait until Friday to go to the convention center (at the Sails Pavilion) to get your Friday printed badge and badge holder.

Hope that helps! ^-^/

You can pick up both badges at T&C but you will still have to pick up the Friday badge holder before you leave on Thursday.

Since we can only attend Saturday and Sunday, I believe from what I see I pick them up Saturday morning and would need to get a badge holder. Are those fairly close by to the badge pick-up? Also, if we wanted to see a panel on Saturday and we both needed to pick up badges do you think it will be a big deal with others in line if one of us stays while the other goes and picks up their badge and we switch?

Depends on where the line is and when it starts moving. If the line is moving inside and you still haven't gotten a badge yet, you won't be able to get in.

Based on my experience, if you're in the "Everything but Hall H" line (i.e. Exhibit Hall, Autograph Tkts, Ballroom 20, etc) they move the line in the building around 6-6:30am.  You need your badge at that time or won't get in the door.

You might have a little flexibility for Hall H.  That line gets let in much later, about an hour or so before the panels start.  While the line is outside, you may not need a badge.  I say "may" because if you try to line up the night before of during the middle of the night, I have been asked to show my badge just to get in line.  Once daylight approaches and crowds start to get large it's impossible for them to check badges until they let you in the building.

Ok, so my group of 3 bought tickets to Wil Wheaton's HopCon on Wednesday night. I have preview night, they have regular 4 day. I want to skip preview night and just go to the party. My question is: is it worth it for us to split up and go get our badges separately on Wednesday (me at the convention center, them at the Town and Country)? Or shoud we just get to town (we're arriving about 11am), get checked in at the Marriott Marquis and head over to HopCon which starts at 5pm near Liberty Station?

We are newbies, so we could just pick up our badges all at once on thursday morning - we wont be running for anything.

I hate logistics!

If possible, I'd much rather have my badges before Thursday. This way if there's a panel you need to line up for early, you won't have to go get your badge first.

Do they open the badge lines early? We will have about 5 hours between getting to town and making it to Wheaton's party. I wonder if that is enough to pick up 3 badges from 2 different places and check in. Seems like it would be!

T&C always takes way longer than the actual convention center, BUT it usually opens about two hours early, and there's hardly a line in that time. So I'd recommend going to the T&C somewhere between 1-2PM (even though it says 3PM), grabbing their badges, heading over to the far less crowded convention center at 3 (which usually does operate closer to the posted schedule), and then you should be all done by 3:30/4 at the latest. That's just my suggestion though.

If you wait too long on T&C, it can be a nightmare. Traffic alone can take up to 90 minutes. And then I've stood there for over two hours before on Wednesday with friends after I've gotten my badge. Go early, early, early.

Thanks for the info. We even thought about splitting up - they would drop me at the convention center and head over to T&C.

Are the hotels flexible with check in times?

Some will allow early check-in but you have to call ahead of time

But almost all will at least let you drop your bags off, even if they can't give you room keys yet.

Do you think there might be a shuttle from downtown to the Town & Country on Wednesday for badge pick up?  Avoid the traffic and parking hassle??

If there's more than just you going to pick up your badges, the price of a taxi isn't bad. There's also public buses.

I am so grateful, that yesterday, comic con said they had more badges to sell, so i got through and was able to purchase a thursday pass!!!!!! ;D my question is that this will be my first time ever going to san diego comic con. How long do the lines for picking up the badges usually are??? should you get there early???

Getting there early wouldn't be a bad idea, but in the years I attended as an attendee(2008-2011) it never took me more than maybe 10-15 minutes to get through the line due in large part to the sheer quantity of people at computers CCI uses at the badge pickup in the mornings.
I've never counted, but I'd guess roughly 70 terminals used for badge pickup.

Things move quickly.

Just be attentive for when a spot opens up.

You can pickup your Thursday badge on Wednesday at Town & Country resort in Mission Valley

This is going to be my first year attending without having a 4-Day badge, so I've never done the T&C thing.
In the past, if you pick up your badge at T&C, can you get the badge holders for Thursday and Sunday at the Convention Center on Thursday, or would one have to pick up each day's on the day of the badge?

Thanks.

Since now I can only attend Sunday and I believe we can only pick up badges Sunday,  is there a possibility to see anything panelwise in hall h?
Title: Re: Badge Pick Up

Getting into Hall H isn't out of the question, but will be a bit tricky.  The Doctor Who + Supernatural combo is always super popular and given that this is Matt's last year as the Doctor + the 50th anniversary, things may be even crazier.

Basically, you'll need to line up for Hall H before you have your badges and once badge pickup opens, have the people near you hold your spots while you head over there.  I know various people on here are planning group lineups for various panels, which you might want to consider, especially as you'll be largely dependent on the kindness of strangers otherwise.  SDCC people are usually very nice, but having the extra security of friends or prearranged line buddies is even better :D.

Regarding the niceness of CCI attendees: I've always gone solo to CCI and haven't done a whole lot of panels, but anytime I've had to leave a line for whatever reason(such as using the restroom) I simply politely ask the person in front and/or behind me to hold my spot, and I've never had any problems. As long as you're polite about it and make it more of a request than a demand I'd assume you'll be fine.

You certain about that? I remember people getting badges for the next day after like 3pm or something like that. There were people going up the elevators to the sales pavilion that didn't have a badge on. And this was on like Friday or Saturday.

I know they always say it has to be picked up the day of, just think its worth a shot trying if your in town Saturday anyways for offsite stuff or just partying

Last year, I only had a Thursday badge and pickup and T&C was easy.  We arrived there early and they had opened the lines early and there was NO line.....it's just a bit a walking to get to where the  badge pickup is.

I recommend taking the trolley up and not trying to drive.  There are signs throughout the mall parking lot that you can't park there for T&C.  One could probably drive and park at the mall, as long as you're going to the mall first and you're not obvious that you're just going to T&C. If you park at T&C, I think it's either 10 bucks?  I've also heard horror stories of the car backups to get off the Interstate at the t&C exit.

Well it's complicated because some of us are also going to Nerdist Podcast Saturday night too.

Probably start 5 or 6 pm and it may be a fairly large group, so some of us will leave to go the the Nerdist Podcast, but it's important that you spend most of the time in line , as to not upset others that will be there the entire night.

Walk by the line area when you're leaving the convention center for the evening. It'll give you a good idea of how the line might look. Only the hardcore, must-sit-in-the-front peeps need to be in line that early...

I am trying to plan this out strategically. We have some with preview Night and others with just 4-day.

What is the earliest that anyone knows the T&C to start letting people get badges? 12:30PM?

The trolly takes 30 minutes to get to the mall, and its a 20minute walk to T&C? so thats just under one hour. If T&C lets people get badges at 12:30pm, then we should be on the trolley by 11:30am.
Estimating 30 minutes to get the badges, 20 minutes walk back to the mall, and 30 minute trolley ride, gets us back to the convention center at 2pm.
When do you think they start letting people pickup the preview night badges? Ive been so many years but dont remember if they started letting people get badges before 3pm at the convention center.
Next we get the preview night badges and wait in line to get into the exhibit hall. Then run like mad to hasbro/matell/crazycat

I think the trip to T&C will mess up my changes to be in a good spot in line to get exclusives. We didnt want to split up.

I seriusly just changed my flight to tuesday ,and one of my friends got us a hotel in gaslamp for tuesday night JUST so we wouldnt be so tired wednesday. I managed to get the flight change for free (even though i wasnt supposed to). And the hotel room is only $104 on hotwire! /score.

The things we do for this convention...

T&C will probably open for badge pickup at some random unexpected time.  12:30 would be pretty early, though.  I think they've learned from experience -- two years ago it was a mess, but last year they were on top of things.  (Looking at a photo I took at the T&C last year, it seems to be stamped 1:30pm -- which would mean they started giving badges out by at least 1:00, possibly slightly earlier.  IF my timestamp is accurate.)

It actually worked out great to just wait until I heard that they were starting to give out badges and then head down (took me half an hour to get there).  By then the line had cleared, and I walked right in with no wait.

From the convention center to Fashion Valley, it's a 20-minute trolley ride. From the Fashion Valley transit center to T&C, it's literally a five minute walk; it's just a block down Fashion Valley Road toward the freeway.

There are other ways to get from downtown to Fashion Valley, but the trolley is least subject to traffic and most likely to run on time.

Pros pick their badge up at Pro Badge pickup located on the first floor.  I don't think the days matter since I thought all pros get four days w/preview night.  I could be wrong.  The line for that should not be a problem for him/her.

Last year we caught the free CCI buses at Petco Park to T&C to pick up our badges on Wednesday; I recall the first buses departed Petco at 3pm.  As mentioned by others, the traffic was a nightmare and it took us an hour or more to arrive at T&C.  When we exited the bus, the line for people waiting to take the bus back downtown for preview night was massive.  After picking up our tickets we took the trolly back.  Taking the trolly to and from T&C is highly recommended.

Also- I lost my ID and Kansas has a really weird paper license. I don't think the hard copy will get to me in time. Will this be a problem? Would a work ID work for me?

Hi, I had a question. I have found out that I will be arriving thursday morning, rather than wednesday night. I had been planning on getting in line at 6 AM to get into panels on thursday, but I'm realizing this might not be possible. I was wondering, do you think it would be possible to get in line still at that time, and then have my friends and I leave one at a time and go grab our badges at 8:30 and remain in line? Or is that totally unfair/rude? Ooooor will that completely just not work at all? Help wouild be greatly appreciated.

The thing is, you can't get into the convention center until you have your badge. Meaning, if all of you need to get badges and doors open at 8:30, no one in your group will be able to stay in the "into the con" line.

Of course someone correct me if I'm wrong!

It's not rude but depending on when the lines start shifting, it might not be very easy to coordinate logistically. Security starts picking up around 6-7am when they start compressing lines because the crowds really start to pick up and trying to get back in line may be difficult.

There's a Hall H line. Those doors open 30-45 minutes before the 1st panel of the day.

The other line is to get into the convention center. It'll vary on what time those doors open and will depend on how crowded things are outside and if they have all their security and volunteers set and ready inside before they allow the lines to queue inside.

Okay... so I guess my follow-up question is, is it even possible to get my badge thursday morning and make it into ballroom 20 for the psych panel? Thanks for helping me out!

If you can find someone to be in line with who has their badge already, this is what you can do:

Wait in line early with everyone else. Make sure you befriend others around you who will be getting into the BR20 line. When the badge pickup line gets going, go to that line and get your badge and then go to the BR20 which should now be inside (and winding around the tents) and find your friends.

If others vouch for you, it'll be more likely that security will let you back into the line. No guarantees if that'll work if they change the timing around when the lines start moving but if everything stays about the same, this would probably be your best chance. Worse came to worse then you can't get back in line and you can try for the autograph lines or get on the exhibition floor.

Going to my first SDCC this year...

The first panel I'd like to see is at 10:30 am on Thursday.  I don't think I will have any trouble getting into the panel, but how long should I give myself to get my badge and be on time for the panel?

I'd prefer to sleep in as much as I can the night before.  I need my rest for the Con!

Try to pick up your badge on Wednesday.  You are eligible too and it will save you stress. If you get it Thursday morning - you'll need to get in line probably by 7am. But earlier would be better if you don't want to risk missing your panel.

What's your panel at 10:30?

Wow. I had no idea I'd have to wait that long to get my badge...  I'm not getting to SD till 11pm Wednesday Night, so Wednesday is a no go...

The panel is the Comic Book Law School 101.

I would check on what's after that panel, but from my experiences, the media panels (TV, movies, popular cartoons) are the ones people line up super early for.  A lot of the informational and even the comic focused panels tend to be easier to drop in on.  With that said, do what Billyconard suggested and get their early in the morning.  Once you have your badge, find the room the panel is in and try to find the line for it.  They should start processing people around that time for badge pickup (maybe 8?).

I'm hoping to see the Breaking Bad panel, but I only have a Sunday badge. And I wanted to get in line around 3am/4am, my mom and I were planning on switching off to go pick up our badges but I don't know how early they open Hall H and I don't want to waste hours in line if it opens before we both have badges. I have heard that people have picked up Sunday badges late Saturday but I feel that might not be totally true (I'll give it a shot). Is there a slim chance I could make it in for the panel? I don't need to be up front I know the hall will be crowded for Doctor Who.

You can pick up your badge the day before. 100% positive on this as I've done it before. You just go to the Sails Pavilion badge pickup area Saturday afternoon. I think the time use to be 4pm that they give out next day badges.

I was really concerned the year I did not get a 4 Day Pass but SDCC's setup in the Sails Pavilion went very smooth.

Hello lovely people.

Anyone know if I can pick up badges for my wife? I have 4 days, she has Friday and Sunday (that's about all she can handle, God bless her!). I'll be @ the Con on Friday before she gets there with the kids. I'd like to meet her with her badge to get her in as quick as possible.

http://www.comic-con.org/cci/badge-pickup (ftp://www.comic-con.org/cci/badge-pickup) states: "You will need a valid photo ID and barcode confirmation to pick up your badges. You may not transfer, sell, and/or share your badge or barcode confirmation. The name on your confirmation must match your photo ID."

I can present copies of her confirmation and matching photo ID.

Thanks,
L

This is my first time and I'm going solo. I have a one day badge for Friday so I'm just trying to make sure I have things somewhat together. Since I'm only able to pick up the badge Friday morning and that starts at 0830 and the main doors don't open til 0930, should I get in line early for my badge? If so, would 0600-0700 be ok? Once I get my badge do I get into another line to make onto the exhibit floor? I'm starting to mildly freak out that I'm going to waste to much time being lost in the beginning.

Short answer. No. Everyone has to pick up their own badge w/ their ID.

Longer answer. Depends on who you get at the badge pickup desk. But still more than likely no if they are trying to crack down this year. Yes, you have her ID and info but once they start making exceptions, it becomes a slippery slope.

Sorta depends on what you're planning on doing. If you're just looking to wander the floor and get some freebies or whatever, you'd be better off waiting til close to when the door opens - it'll go very fast once doors open.

If you are trying to do some specific things like get in autograph lines, panels, exclusives, you'd want to get in line early but you'll be sitting there for awhile until they start moving people in to badge registration. The line will look bad but will move fairly quickly once they start.

I'll be prepared for either possibility. I suppose it wouldn't be too bad if she had to get them herself. Convention center badge pickup went pretty quickly last year.

Yeah it's actually pretty fast if you're not trying to do it first thing in the morning w/ thousands of others. The other benefit is that she will be able to pick up a WB bag and program guide that they may not give to you if you're holding 2 badges.

Just FYI, in case you're bringing the kids, I wasn't able to get a child badge without the child present last year.

I've been going for a number of years but I've never picked up at T&C before. If you get your badge there, do you still get a WB bag and events guide and such? Or is it just the badge? I'm trying to decide if it's worth dropping by T&C on our way downtown Wednesday (we have a hotel for Wednesday but our badges are 4-day no Preview Night).

Yeah you get the WB bag and SDCC book as well. It is less of headache to deal with since you have no preview night badge.

The rules have always listed that pickup is day of but if the person happens to scan your barcode and print out your badge, it's not like the computer will tell them they can't.

Realistically, what happens is that badge pickup is extremely busy in the mornings and empty in the afternoons, so historically they have allowed some people to pick up their next morning's badges the day before. Although it's not really 'official'.

Same time, as long as the child is with you. We picked up 4-day badges without preview on Thursday at the T&C last year, and got the child badge at the same time.

As I recall from last year the main line moved in the building by 7:30ish.  They check badges as you enter so if you do not have one you will not be allowed to go in and get badges.
I am pretty sure that Thursday badges can be picked up the day before at the Town & Country Hotel, you would be wise to pick them up before you get into line.

I wish I could :( My friend can only get there Thursday morning. Seems pretty messed up that they would require a badge for the people in line before the doors officially open and before badge pick up for that day is officially open.

The line move is usually for safety and to make room instead of having everyone hanging out in a jumbled mess by the water.

If CCI had their way, there wouldn't be any overnight camping in line.

I think the problem with this is people would rush the door once they are allowed at a certain time and would likely hang around to still be near the front of the line.
What I hated about the line was campers in front of us would be there all night and just before we get let in the doors, five of their friends who were sleeping in the hotel would show up,usually with coffee for their friend that was saving their spot, they do not police this!
You can stand in line without a badge but the problem is that at least last year they let us in at 7ish and you need a badge to get in. I believe there is a separate line for badges, but they will not let you in the building in the main line without one.

Absolutely there'd be a rush.

If you bring that to security's attention, they'll remove the whole group from the line. They've done it before. It's usually for the parts of the line closer to the front b/c those people have been there longer but they will get rid of everyone.

Thanks for the info! I hate telling on people but we were in line for hours both nights and got pushed back by these people, it seemed to be the norm- send one person to camp and the rest sleep. I think half the people in front of me would have been booted had I told security.

Pulling CCI into it can get ugly.  I've seen people reported, an argument ensues, the person who reported the incident in the first place almost gets booted from line for arguing (even though they're right) and in the end CCI will say if they didn't see it, they can't do anything about it.  I've also been told that the sidewalk in front of the building is public property and they can't enforce anything.  I'm not saying that's true, but it's been used as an excuse for doing nothing.  I've also seen situations where CCI pulls the person from line to stop an argument and then lets that person into the room first ahead of everyone.

But you're right, it does seem to be the norm and I don't see it changing this year.  My best advice is not that you have to like it, but don't let it ruin your day or own enjoyment of the con.

Indeed.

Usually the people around you will vouch for you against the line cutters. That'll be the tiebreaker. This is more for the first few hundred in line that would have a shot at the front rows. Less of an issue the further back you are.

Not saying you should but if it's flagrant (1 person holding for like a big group) then definitely put a stop to it. It's just as bad as the person who goes into the room and then claims a whole row of seats. Nope, not happening.

I realize this is not going to change, apparently this is a great setup for larger groups because some can sleep while others camp. My group is two people and I would never dream of waltzing up and expecting to cut in front of people that were waiting out there all night, but that is just me.  I haven't seen the people saving seats, I have actually gotten some front row seats from some very nice people so I guess there is a mix.  I don't let it bother me too much, I learned long ago that this kind of process is never going to be fair to everyone and I deal with it.  I just think it is very rude for people to do this.

Okay, I've asked this question elsewhere and no one could answer what I was asking. My question is if you have a 4-day pass w/o preview night, are you at a disadvantage compared to people who already have their badges from the night before if your goal area is the exhibit hall? I'm wanting to get to some pretty hot exclusives as early as possible and know you have to have a badge first and just want to make sure I won't be hours behind people who have badges already from preview night. I'm super confused about the badge pickup/lining up process. Lol! Sorry!

If you can get there by Wednesday, you can pick up your badge at Town and Country.

Otherwise you do would be in the badge pickup line on Thursday as opposed to the line to get into the convention center (for the exhibit floor and panel rooms) so you wouldn't get in until after.

I'm coming in late Wednesday, so it'll definitely be Thursday. Hypothetically, if I'm coming with a friend who also has a 4-day w/o preview, could one of us wait in the exhibit hall line while the other person picks up their badge and then switch back in time to make it into the exhibit hall when it opens? Or is that a party foul?

by the time the badge pick up starts on thursday the exibit hall line is in the building and badges are required.
if you want to be early inline then you must pick up your badges at the t&c otherwise just accept the fact that you'll be behind a lot of folks.

Okay, that makes sense, I think. I read that the convention center opens at 9:30 and the badge pickup starts at 8:30, so I guess I was just confused. Thanks for answering though!  :)

there's a waiting area that gets let into the floor first, that line usually gets let is much earlier than 8:30a people
that waiting area is actually in the con and badges are checked while entering into that waiting area.

It is a little confusing, last year was my first year and I was lucky to get a 4 day with preview then. That allowed us to check things out and figure out where to go. This year we don't have preview night but we pretty much know where to go now.
There are so many different lines before an after. There is the Hall H line, I believe it does not move into the building until after badge pick up at 8:30.(I am going to experience this line for the first time this year.)
The other line is the going into everywhere else in the building line minus badge pick up people.
There is a separate badge line( I have not experienced this yet) I assume they do not move into the building until 8:30 when badges are available to be picked up.
The line that goes into the building lets you in usually between 6:30-7:30ish, well before badge pick up.  But this does not give you access to rooms it just splits up the lines into the exhibition line, Ballroom 20 line, autograph line and lines for the other rooms.  You then stand in these lines until they open the rooms.  But in order to be in any of these lines, inside the building, you will need a badge.
I hope this helps, it can be confusing for a first-timer.

If badges don't go out until 3pm why are there always people already lined up before 3pm on Preview Night to get in the Exhibit Hall? This year I'm going to ask the folks at the front how they did it.

Badge pick up often opens up very early--last year it opened sometime after 12:30.  The line for the hall starts in Sails, just past the badge pick up area, so the people at the front are basically the same people who were at the front of the badge pickup line.  The ones who are at the very, very front get in line extremely early--a friend of a friend was one of the first 20 or so people and if I remember correctly, he got in line around 5 a.m.

Does Comic Con start badge pick up earlier than 8:30 am on Thursday? Is it worth waiting in the badge pick up line earlier than 8:30am?

My friends won't be arriving until after 8:30pm and we won't make it to T&C.

Thank you so much!

Sometimes they start badge pickup early. They have a set time but if things are ready, they might move the lines early. It varies a little bit day by day depending on what else is going on.

If you don't have anything else to do in the morning, it doesn't hurt to get in line early to get your badge as soon as possible so you can start getting in line for all the things you're looking to do.

I am a bit confused on badge pick up and entrance to exhibit hall for preview night.
Is there two separate lines in the morning for both or just one giant one for both badge pick up then from there you can go into the line for the exhibit hall?

To get closer to the front of the line for exhibit hall do I use a buddy system where one gets in line and the other pick up badges or do you need a badge to wait in line for exhibit hall during preview night?

You have one giant one for pick-up.

I'm not a 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure a buddy system wouldn't work.  I don't know how closely they police the area, but you're supposed to have a badge to go beyond the pick up area.

You need to line up to get your badge first so the buddy system won't work for lining up for the exhibition hall. Once you pick up your badge there will be a line for the exhibition hall in the same area and you can then get in line for that. We did that last year, we waited on Wednesday night to pick up our badge and got in the exhibition line and once it opened we got right in.  I would suggest that if you want to line up for the exhibition hall early to get to the badge pick up early.

I don't know where is the line for badge pick up at the convention center on Friday morning.
Does the line starts in front of Lobby A?

There will be a line in front of the convention center... I'm not sure which door it starts in front of, but there will be a large banner over the correct door indicating it. Security will also be able to direct you to the appropriate line. And, if their are multiple lines already started, your line will be the only one populated by people not wearing badges.

Oh sorry I thought it was implied that you have to go to the convention center to get your badge. You will end up getting to the Sails pavilion to pick up your badge. Usually you have to be towards entrance a b or c where the escalator will take you up there.

ALF and Cat,

The badge pickup line will snake into those doors at the street side, then you split to line up for Hasbro +/- your Badges. Hope this helps, from John_Yon and the Red Arrows of Success!

One line is for Hall H.
The other will be going into the convention center where once inside will split into separate lines. ie Hasbro, autograph, exhibit hall,BR20 and badge pickup.

Depends on what time you go - parking might be little tough.

Shuttle doesn't really make sense to me either but just ask the drivers.

I am pretty much at the furthest hotel on the shuttle route, so it would take forever. Maybe we will just try driving...

That's what they say. There are always tales of the occasional exception (and at this point you would be risking little to try, if you're already downtown, since the line is nonexistent) but officially no.

Title: URGENT: Friday registration and hall H
Post by: cabby on July 17, 2013, 11:00:47 PM
I'm completely new to comic con and was only able to get a day pass for Friday. I'm going with one friend, who also only has a Friday pass.

I want to attend the Game of Thrones panel, and people were suggesting that we camp out there starting midnight on Thursday. I'd like to do this, but we have to pick up badges, which are available only at 8:30AM on Friday. I'm worried we'll just lose our spot in line when we go to get the badges, OR that badge pickup will take so long that even if I save a spot in line, the line will already have entered the hall.

Here are my questions:

Can I go and register for both myself and my friend, if I bring her ID and information to the badge pickup line?

How long is the wait going to be for the badge pickup?

If I go get my badge at 8:30 and my friend saves my spot, and then she goes and gets her badge, will there be long badge lines that will prevent me from entering Hall H on time?

What do you recommend I do to successfully attend the Game of Thrones panel and get my badges?

I'd just like to know what I should expect!

Thanks so much!

If you have single day passes, go the night before and get your badge holder for the next day.  There were no lines!  If you have a temp saying you need your actual badge instead of the one with the X on it to exchange just go to Badge Resolutions and they will give you your badge holder like it says on the badge!

Try heading over to the Sails Pavilion area. That's where registration and badge pick-up is.  You should be able to get a program guide there by asking a Comic-Con staff member.

This is my dilemma exactly.  I can't do pre-registration because I am driving into SD in the morning.  I am thinking of having the person in front or behind us hold our spot at 8:15 or so and both of us going to get our badges.  I'm afraid that taking turns might end up taking too long.  Any advice?

I was able to pickup all my badge holders Thursday, you go up to registration in sails area,  show them your badges and tell them you want to pick up your badge holders and they will send you to the back where the badge holder pickup is . I asked they lady there about why someone told me you would only be able to pickup the next days holder and she said that they used to do that years ago, but now they just give you all the holders at once now.

Does anyone have info about being able to pick up a 1 day badge the prior afternoon (ie I only have a Sunday pass) What are my chances of picking it up Saturday afternoon? I'm going to be in the Hall H line & 2 of us need to pick up our Sunday badge before the Hall H line goes inside! I've read that in prior years some people say they've been able to do it...?

You can pick up your badge the day before. 100% positive on this as I've done it before. You just go to the Sails Pavilion badge pickup area Saturday afternoon. I think the time use to be 4pm that they give out next day badges.

Has anyone had any luck doing this this year??
Headed to SD now and hoping to pick up my badge for tomorrow! :/
