CBLDF British Invasion Welcome Party
« on: July 02, 2019, 08:37:54 AM »
The Comic Book Legal Defence Fund is putting on a "British Invasion" welcome party on Thursday. Kieren Gillen will DJ along with Tula Lotay and surprise guests.

It's $20 for non-CBLDF members but free for members.

Is this party even worth it? Has anyone gone before?

it is if you're in the comic industry or if you want to meet some creators. if you're only looking for a good time and an open bar, i would keep on looking.

That said, the CBLDF is a great charity to donate money to and they always have good raffle prizes donated by top notch creators to help them get their funds.

Yeah, CBLDF is a good charity and they do fun events. Gillen is a very talented DJ despite the amount of puns he makes. Jock and Tula Lotay are both top of their game so having a chance to mingle with them is definitely something kinda cool.

But yes, if you're looking for a free bar or some A-List movie celebs, that probably won't happen here. Though, like listed, there's a bunch of A-List comic celebs that are already acknowledged as being there.

I bought my ticket and am looking forward to it, myself. Meeting comic creators and getting books signed/remarked is how I spend 30-50% of my time at both SDCC and WonderCon, so this is definitely in my wheelhouse. Also, I like that this year CBLDF seems to be focusing on standing up to attempted censorship of minority voices - women, lgbt, poc - in books and comics. That's something I can get behind.  8)

I go to this every year, mostly just to support the CBLDF. It's very chill on the roof of the Westgate, there's a nice view and a fountain, makes a great break from the "crazy" of Con! The goodie bag and appetizers are always good but drinks are expensive so be prepared for that! I typically start the night there then venture to other parties but with the DJ this year it'll be worth sticking around!

For those who have been to this, is this a 21+ event?
If stupidity got us in this mess, then why can't it get us out?

That I do not know, I've never seen children there, they'd probably be bored to death but I don't see anything on he Eventbrite page about an age limit!

Thanks!  My 16 year old is pushing me to take her to this.  I am hesitant as I don't know if I can get her in.  She's mature enough but wasn't sure they would let her in.

I would contact them though eventbrite and ask. It's awesome that she is interested in this, a lot of the work they do benefits kids.

I've never been able to go to this, and won't be able to this year, I just use it as a reminder to renew my membership.

Just curious - do people go in cosplay? I am thinking about packing my Doctor Aphra.
