Title: If the forum has helped you, please consider a donation!
Post by: alyssa on April 02, 2016, 05:37:37 AM
If you have been helped by the forum and all the amazing work our members have done, please consider a donation to help us continue helping folks like yourself.

While this community provides a way to meet up with other folks to share the joy of conventions, it takes a lot of time and energy to put together the buying groups as well as the hotel exchange documents and forms, in addition to maintaining the threads and forum areas.  There are also expenses that go with this venture, including hosting fees, outlays for lanyards, marketing to expand the community, etc.  Many plans for back-end improvements are in progress, which could potentially provide a more robust environment for the badge buying groups and the like.

We would gladly appreciate your support as we strive to plan for the needs of the community going forward.

There are currently four ways of helping:
[1] a regular monthly donation via Patreon.com: Click here to donate! (https://patreon.com/user?u=3098388)
[2] a donation through the forum's subscription portal:
Go to your forum Profile > Actions > Paid Subscriptions
[3] a donation through PayPal without incentives: Click here to donate! (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=YXGN6E6M9YPML)
If you just want to donate any amount (and aren't interested in the lanyard or ad-free option), this is the option for you.

Currently, the incentive options are:

Donate $20.00 USD and get no ads on the forum for 6 months.
*Please use the forum's subscription portal by going to your forum Profile > Actions > Paid Subscriptions.

Donate $40.00 USD and get no ads for 12 months.
*Please use the forum's subscription portal by going to your forum Profile > Actions > Paid Subscriptions.

Donate $50.00 USD and get no ads for 12 months, plus a complimentary (free!) Friends of Comic Con lanyard shipped to your door.
*The lanyard is a $12.00 USD value!
*Please use PayPal (click here to donate (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=YXGN6E6M9YPML)) and include your preferred shipping address in the "Notes" box.

Regardless of the incentives, any and all donations are gratefully accepted!

Thank you so much for your contribution and support to our wonderful community!

Any preference on Patreon vs. Account Setting/Subscription vs. PayPal?  (i.e. which one results in the least fees/biggest bang for our buck?)

If it were me, I'd personally go with one of the options that includes an incentive.  I think those are the ones that are the most bang for your buck, so to speak, but truthfully, it really depends on what you're interested in or what you're looking for.  There are several donation methods, just it's up to you on what you think works best.

I'll do my best to explain the different options and methods below.  It's a bit lengthy, but perhaps this will help you decide.  (I've included them in a spoiler tag so that this post won't look like giant wall of text, ha ha.)

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Hope this helps!  Thank you for your consideration!

Thanks for the explanation Zero.  The "biggest bang for our buck" was actually re whether the Forum is charged greater fees on one platform vs. the other but since that does not seem to be an issue, I'll just keep sending random donations throughout the year via PayPal like I usually do.  O0

Ah, I apologize for the misunderstanding.

If you use your debit card or credit card to add funds to your PayPal account when you make the donation, PayPal charges the recipient $0.30 (and takes 2.9% of the transfer amount, if I recall correctly).

If you transfer funds from your debit card (or bank account) and keep a balance of money in your "Wallet" on your PayPal account, then I believe they won't charge you any fees when sending money (meaning the forum gets all of it without having to pay any PayPal fees).

Here's the information about fees on PayPal.  In our case, scroll down to the "Sending money" part at the bottom.
https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees

(From PayPal's website, linked above)
PayPal balance or bank account: Free when sending money inside the US

Debit/credit card fee: 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction

Outside the US: 0% to 2% fee when fully funded with your bank account or PayPal balance or 2.9% to 5.99% plus a fixed fee based on the payment currency if paying with a credit or debit card

I'll need to re-check if there are any fees for Patreon if you use the credit card payment method versus the PayPal payment method on there.  I don't recall off the bat, unfortunately.

Hope that helps, and thank you for thinking of us and donating!

LeeAnn, let me go in and adjust that up ;) to the annual, Thank you for your support!!

eta
actually [member=2419]lilredrubi74[/member]  , you signed up for the 6month recurring- which means you'll be charged again in 6 months.  I'm not sure what you'd like to do.  stay on the recurring & refund the overpayment or go to a one year.  Either way it totally cool with me & easy to do- just let me know- via pm or here, which ever you are more comfortable with.

Thank you so much for your donation and support, [member=3344]genieinthelamp[/member]!

All of the donation methods use PayPal for payment.  (Patreon can use both PayPal or a credit card number though.)

If I recall correctly (I believe this is how it goes for PayPal; I apologize in advance if I'm mistaken):

If the donation payment is funded from money already in your PayPal account, then the transaction should be instant.  (This means you used PayPal to withdraw money from your checking account in advance and have that money stored in your PayPal account as a balance.)

If the donation payment is funded by a credit card or debit card, then the transaction should be instant.

If the donation payment is funded from a checking account through your bank, PayPal has to withdraw the funds from your checking account, and that can take 3 to 7 days (3 to 10 days in some cases) to clear.  This is known as a "e-check," meaning it basically takes the same time that an regular paper check would take to clear from one bank to another.

Hope that helps!

I used the donate button instead of one of the links for the subscriptions and also didn't put my address in the box.  Basically, I just did everything wrong.  Is there a way to correct my mistakes?

Made my $30 donation! This place is awesome and the friendliest group of comic-con fans/attendees that I've found. If this place was not around, our past 3 SDCC experiences would not be nearly as awesome. I'm more than happy to give back to such an excellent place full of excellent people!

I had a chance to go through all the folks accounts who donated & switch them over to "no ads'

however - if anyone thinks they should be "no ads' and has them please don't hesitate to either post or pm me.  there's a few bits of info that need to line up & i may have made a mistake.

Just got back from vacation, (Grand Canyon and Sedona, which our kids have named "Mommie's Comic-Con" once they realized the amount of walking and early mornings that would be involved ... ) and a nice new lanyard was here to greet me. Looking forward to wearing it, and thanks to everyone who keeps the forum going!

Hello,

I just placed a donation/subscription for one year and have a question.  Can someone advise what is the difference between a paid subscription and a flexible one?  My apologies if the answer is available in the forum, did not find an answer when I searched using the exact phrase.  I unchecked the recurring donation option, in case the flexible subscription is one I would prefer to contribute with.

After reading some on the posts, I also saw that I should have left my user name.  Unfortunately, Pay Pal did not give me an option to leave a note before processing.  If you need any information from me, please let me know.  Thank you.

First [member=2429]koop1974[/member] Thank you for your support! You should enjoy a year of no ads as our thanks for your help.

I haven't looked at the difference between a paid & flexible subscription in a while. I believe the difference between the two is related to thresholds for 'thank you gifts.  I am not sure but i think the flexible option is for folks who would like to donate a smaller amount then the threshold for 'no ads'

Thank you for the response Alyssa.  Hmm, a smaller donation is not what I would want to do; this forum has been invaluable especially since I'm not much of a poster.  I should have left the recurring box checked.  I'll just have to figure out how to update my donation to a recurring one.

Koop, if you'd like there is a recurring donation you can make through Patreon for $5 per month. This includes no ads. This is another option (not required).

"Exhibit Hall" is just the title or ranking for the number of posts you have on the forums.  (Forum members who have the "Supporter" title above their post ranking means that they have donated to the forum and website.)

[member=1]alyssa[/member] may be able to assist with this.  She would have to manually add the "Supporter" title to your forum account.

Here's the donation information for reference:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

Hope that helps!  ^__^/

I have to make that change in teh system...it involves closing out one subscription catagory & starting another- let me try and figure out a way to do it simply. Keep bugging me!

[member=2429]koop1974[/member] i think i figured out how to do it- but it's time consuming so i may not get to it for a while. I will try- i've got some long plane flights coming up.

Thank you for supporting the forum and website!  Every little bit helps.

Regarding any new merchandise, [member=1]alyssa[/member] made an announcement not too long ago.

You can check it out here:
https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=9125.0

Unfortunately, there will not be any new items this year (which she addresses in the aforementioned post).

Thanks again for your support!

[member=317]Zero[/member] -  Thank you for that.  I missed that earlier post.  My apologies and I have my stuff from last year that I will wear proudly.   Super group indeed.  :)

At WonderCon, we almost had the full range of FoCC lanyards on display! The white one, the 2 blue ones, the purple one and last year’s black one. The only one missing was the original plain blue with yellow. But it was great to see all of the representation!

Hey, I just noticed that my account isn't tagged as Supporter anymore.
I know my annual payment went through at the beginning of the month.
Maybe it just needs to be applied?
Thanks.

Thank you for your continued support, [member=3710]SteveD[/member]!  It's greatly appreciated.  Every little bit really helps in keeping the website and forums up and running.

I would love to assist you with this (and edit your account accordingly), but only an admin has access to the subscription information.  Tagging [member=1]alyssa[/member] to help confirm this.  Once she has, I can take it from there.  ^__~

It’s simple to switch him and yes he needs to be moved to supporter but the question is, why did that happen

Indeed... (That's why I tagged you, silly.  ;p)  Thanks for following up on it.

Thanks for letting us know, [member=842]TardisMom[/member].  I apologize for the inconvenience.  Hm... it shouldn't be the case if you're a "Supporter."  That seems a bit odd (and I also don't have access to the forum's subscription settings to double check this).

Flagging down [member=1]alyssa[/member] again to look into this.  ^__^;;;

A while ago, more like years ago :).  As I said, I don't mind ads so no biggie.

Just wanted to check if you indeed received my payment from PayPal on April 2nd?  Looks like my annual subscription expired April 3rd and did not automatically renew.
Let me know if there is anything you need me to do.
Thanks.

this has to do with the move from the url friendsofcci to friendsofcc and paypal-

i think the simplest way of dealing with this is to have all long time supporters start a new subscription (when their old one runs out of course)
I thought i had solved the problem by stopping the old sub's & manually re-entering info when in the new url- it seems as tho that did not work due to payment issues.  I am busy with my move and frankly can not focus on computer work while so distracted.
i hope to chill & do computer work in Aug onward

I've finally tracked down the issue regarding subscriptions and corrected it.

There should not be any double payment. if something goes wonky, it will be reversed. please contact me. Do not hesitate. I want to get this sorted correctly.

i will be watching the forum/sites side of the ledger to make sure there isn't anything funny going on.

You're asking if I still see ads?  Yes, there's an ad above this as I type.

Yes, my account is not showing up as a Supporter anymore.
Also, as you suggested, I went ahead and stop my recurring PayPal payments and will re-subscribe in April when my current subscription is up.
As always, thanks for the help.

At the top under the Blog Shop Home line, and again (same ad) after the first post.  And I'm kidding, it doesn't bother me.

As so many have recently stated, no thank you is sufficient for all the time and dedication the core FoCC team has applied to creating this terrific forum.

I am not much good for helping out on the technical side of the forum, but I GLADLY just renewed my subscription!!  Hope that helps in some way!

Keep up the fantastic work!!

Done!  I'm good for a year, although the PayPal didn't allow for adding a note in the transaction.

Please consider a donation.
All donated money goes directly to supporting the efforts of our volunteer staff & the cost of maintaining the online presence. Plus as a subscriber you'll get the fancy new label of 'Supporter' under your name.
