Friends Of CCI Forum: Map 2014 UPDATED!
http://batchgeo.com/map/FriendsOfCCIForum2014
Hi, everybody! It's been a hell of a year, right?
Well, here we are with now less than ONE HUNDRED less days to go before San Diego Comic-Con 2014 and, as I agreed with myself, I would come back and update the map and links for this thread.
By this point, we should all know if we are able this year to make it to the Con in July, what with Badge sales all done and dusted and accommodation getting sorted, slowly but surely. So, to that end, I've gone through and added all the names and locations to the map that needed putting in and we now should have a comprehensive map of the truly international audience of this amazing event!
Don't forget - while the title of the thread is 'Where are you coming from?', it's more of a Friends Of CCI members map (I'm wondering if I should change that...) so you don't necessarily have to be attending SDCC in 2014 to be listed on here. Do check and see if all the data I've entered is correct, especially if, for example, you may have moved since this map was last put together.
And, of course, if you'd like to be added to the map, simply reply to this thread with the location you're coming from - we're not wanting street names but if you could add a city, that would make the map a little more accurate.
I'm glad people have still been taking part in this thread and I hope to see a few more pins added as we get closer to July!
You can find the map - and share it with your friends - here:
http://batchgeo.com/map/FriendsOfCCIForum2014
Where are you coming from? Where's the furthest that a line buddy you've made friends with has come from? And do you still keep in touch??
You let The Man get you down, The Man wins - I say, Damn The Man.

Sunny Californian summer with a slight dash of a light breeze (being near the waterfront and all). That's how it usually is in July in the area around the convention center. High 70s to mid 80s, most likely. Last summer felt cooler than the previous one in San Diego though.
Back on-topic:
As for where I'm coming from for the convention...
Technically, it would be South Korea because that's where I'm teaching English right now.
Normally, I'd be coming from my apartment in San Diego. ;p
-
Los Angeles, so just a quick trip down on the Amtrak for us :D.
-
I'll be coming from England. Currently living in Liverpool at the moment....

Fayetteville, AR to San Diego, CA (1,600miles)

Yeap, 14 hours ahead of PST right here. Takes me about 20+ hours to get to the US by plane, and maybe a few more from either LAX/JFK which is usually where I land.
This will be my second SDCC in a row, I LOVE the weather (summer in SD is way less scorching than in NY) and plan to explore SD more thoroughly this trip.
P.S. TJ we need to find a way to say hello in person this time!!! :D

We're coming from Nashville, TN.

You have to admit SDCC is freaking awesome. Other then let's say the Olympics , what other event brings people from all over the world each and every year. It's true when people say us nerds are taking over the world!

Hey Zero that's very cool to be teaching English in South Korea. I've had a few friends and former classmates do it. By chance are you Korean yourself?
To the subject, like Transmute, I'm coming from NorCal but I'm on the "San Francisco" side ;) That's a significant distinction for the peeps up here. However, I'm originally from SoCal ... 75% of my life there so it's still sort of home for me ... my parents, sister, best friend, best man at my wedding and all my buddies all still live there. So Comic Con is a family visit as well as an adventure. I commute in from my in-laws. It's a little more than an hour but it saves $$ on lodging so I can spend it at the show!
I'm amazed by how far some people come for SDCC. The UK? Singapore? Hell, even New Hampshire, Maryland, etc. I can't imagine! That's so costly, it must be like THE summer vacation trip! I forget being relatively close how big a deal it is. It's like Disneyland, I grew up 15 minutes from there and would go so often, it got boring, it's only as an adult I fully realize how big it is and that people come from all over the world to go there! I guess I should appreciate it and imagine it would be like me going to Hawaii, the Carribean or some exotic place!

Ha ha, thanks. It's been an interesting experience (both good and bad). Nope, I'm not.
I suppose that's why Comic-Con's full name includes "International" in it because it really is. *laughs*

Well if that's the case they should call it San Diego "take all my money" "stress me on badges and hotels" Comic Con :o because that's really what it is!

Add another from Singapore! I've never been to SDCC before and the cons here are comparatively tiny, so I'm bracing myself to be overwhelmed. On the bright side, the weather in San Diego shouldn't be too hot!

The weather is perfect, about low 20s in the day and goes down to 13-15 at night so you can get by with a light jacket, and if you're planning to cosplay you won't melt in your outfit like you would back home, which is kind of why I never attend any conventions in Singapore. :p
Tip: You'll probably never get to sleep more than 2 hours a day during con week because there is just so much going on. Just keep awake and party on until you get on the plane back home, then you can crash for the entire flight.

Nope, that just shows where you are by putting a dot for you on the map. I add people by way of spreadsheet data which I edit at my end - as far as I can tell, no-one can 'add' anyone else, I've been doing that manually from the info on this thread.

i know, it always struck me as funny to have a prez. Named after a town ...lol.

Looks like the pin colors have changed on the map. Is that something you manually control?

I live about 80 miles away (1.5 hrs) in Hemet, CA. I still consider myself a San Diegan tho because I spent more than half my life in San Diego County. 8)

Hemet is a beautiful place during the summer. I use to live in the IE for a couple years so I can relate to the heat.

Wow, and I thought people coming from Asia had a long flights :D
Yikes!!! No polar route when coming from South America :(
-
At least there isn't nearly as much of a time change as when coming from Asia or Europe!

It's pretty cool how many people outside of the US go to SDCC and are on this forum. Awesome job to everyone who started it!

yeah, this is a good thing, but even with small time change, you can suffer a lot with weather, for example, but I think I won't suffer so much, because there won't be so much temperature difference (believe me, summer SD isn't like my summer. Summer SD is almost like spring or autumn of Brazil, from what I saw).
It's pretty cool how many people outside of the US go to SDCC and are on this forum. Awesome job to everyone who started it!
Yeah! I was surprised to see people from Asia here going to SDCC, everybody who I found until now were from Europe or North America.

Hmmmm There's a lot of people posting on the how far you're coming from thread, but not too many on the welcome/introduction thread. I'm no mod, just saying.

Orange County is far from being Nerdy. There is only 2 comic book stores with in a 15-20 minute drive of my place.

You can't argue with their criteria... ;)
Interestingly, San Diego didn't make the list either.
-
Oh I could argue all day long! LOL

I think the author of that article is a secret agent of Wizard World.
-
I do like how they broke everything down though, it's interesting.
Baltimore doesn't host many conventions but we do have Baltimore Comic Con which has the Harvey Awards and Okaton. A local shop is actually starting up another Con too. It'll be interesting to see how that goes.
-
Maybe a Con-spiracy.

Oh, I didn't know about the welcome/introduction thread. I'll find it and post something :)
You know I don't think I ever posted in the introduction thread either.

How did Phoenix not make the list?? We have a two story museum of nothing but toys and collectibles AND a pretty awesome comic-con ourselves! 2 comic-cons actually.

Sad/perplexed that Houston didn't make the list. I consider us a very nerdy city!
-
Well I think between the fans, honestly we are the ones that care and will fight for the title, we can all agree San Diego should be #1.
-
This is one of my pretty peeves. People writing articles with data without understanding statistics or the proper way of conducting a survey study. Such a seriously flawed article attempting to sound smart and credible -_- waste of time since it can be torn apart in so many ways.

I call shenanigans! Ann Arbor is an awesome example of a nerdy town. We've got one of the best comic shops around (+4 or 5 more), major SCA presence, fairy doors all over downtown, and I have personally played Halo on a 60 foot screen in a campus lecture hall!
-
Wow that's a big screen to get your kill

Wow that's a big screen to get your kill
It was pretty disorienting. We also watched Army of Darkness.

Ok that is awesome! Evil Ash on the big screen would be cool to see.

Portland , OR #2! Woot woot! Having Grimm filming all over the city does not hurt either (last week they filmed right down the street from my work)

You know I don't think I ever posted in the introduction thread either.
Naughty, naughty!!!!!

Forum Housekeeping:
Merged the "How nerdy is your town?" into the "How far are you coming from?" thread.
It relates to people's locations and towns, and it would make for good discussion in the "location" thread as well. ^-^d

Thank you sir

Thank you sir
I'm not a "sir." ;p
No problem. ^-^d
Back on topic...
Yeah! I was surprised to see people from Asia here going to SDCC, everybody who I found until now were from Europe or North America.
There certainly are people from Asia coming to the convention! They might not be on the forums (even though they should be), but I do see a presence when I go to panels with Q and A portions. Some people announce their names and hometowns, or countries, before asking a question. ^-^ Ha ha. It's certainly an international convention. ;p
Quick tip:
For those of you coming from a time zone very much ahead of Pacific Daylight Time (especially first-time con-goers who haven't had the Comic-Con experience yet), get a lot of rest for the few days leading up to the day of your flight. Drink plenty of water, especially to keep from getting dehydrated during the long flight. You'll definitely need it! ^-^d
Here are some articles with tips:

Ok sorry ma 'am

It's been a day or so since I checked in in this thread - took a bit of a detour from topic, didn't it??
Updating the map today with the new entries, should be sorted by the time you Americans stir in the morning...
You let The Man get you down, The Man wins - I say, Damn The Man.
"I can't lie to you about your chances, but... you have my sympathies."

The two were combined so it kind of goes all over the place, but that's what makes it fun.

You can't blame us entirely. The mods love to merge topics, and this time the two weren't really related.
-
Even though we get in trouble sometimes, between the banter we do have alot of great info . Plus it makes the forums fun.

Whoo hoo! (Are we having fun yet? ;D )

I always have fun, until someone crosses the line with others. It's always a great place to have some nerdy fun.

Tampa, FL woo!

Guilty as charged - I picked up on this ritual because I noticed others do so before me! I guess it's a way of shouting out to the folks back home, especially since there really aren't a lot of people at SDCC coming from where I am.
The interesting thing is, two of my friends teaching at separate local colleges emailed me a month after SDCC to tell me that their students were 'freaking out' about a fellow local showing up on Comic-Con panel videos on YouTube, and that they recognised me in it! Haha! Of course, this was then followed by a "btw what the **** were you wearing?!" comment. :P

Map Updated: (18th April) http://batchgeo.com/map/FriendsOfCCIForum2013
I've added all the names I could find on the recent pages since the last map update - the merging of the two threads threw me for a bit but I think I've gotten everybody! Have a look at the map... If there's someone I've missed, just holler.
There are one or two whose locations are a bit vague - if you've just put a country, I've left you off, I'm afraid. I didn't want to misrepresent you by just having a lone pointer out in the middle of the country somewhere! As always, keep adding and I'll keep including...
You let The Man get you down, The Man wins - I say, Damn The Man.

Hahahahaha, that's a funny story to tell--that people recognized you in the videos!
I don't see anything wrong with announcing where you are from when asking a question to a group of panelists (as long as it's a really short "I'm ________ [name], and I'm from _______" without the "I think you're the greatest person that ever lived; I love you so much, and I'm your biggest fan" detail). It lets the panel of actors, writers, producers, artists, etc. know that their work is appreciated in other countries as well. Short and sweet. Ha ha.
Having lived in South Korea for about eight months already, I'm actually surprised that some American TV shows, like Bones and NCIS, are actually quite popular here. (Surprisingly, so is Law and Order: SVU, ha ha.)
@ukdeejay: Nice work! I checked the map again and realized that if you hover over each marked point, you can see the person's forum username. I never noticed that you could do that until now, ha ha! ^-^;
-
I agree with Zero. IMHO it's perfectly fine to say, "Hi, I'm Joe Smith from Somewhere, Someplace." and then ask your question. It's even okay to introduce yourself as your character. For example, at the (hopeful) Justice League panel, imagine someone coming to the mic to ask a question. "Hi, I'm Peter Parker from New York City. I was wondering why you guys all felt the need to use capes? Uh, not you, Wonder Woman..."
-
I guess this is kind of off topic now, but I am flying in from Orlando, Florida!
-
Welcome. We should have better weather at SDCC then we did for Celebration VI last year. The humidity there sucks. Sorry you have to deal with it.
-
I have heard the weather is wonderful out that way. I am stoked to get away from the Florida summer for a bit!

You'll definitely get a nice break from the humidity in San Diego. And you might even find it downright cold! Heck, I live in California, and I find San Diego to be cold!

I will welcome the cold with open arms and a light jacket.

What do first time attendees from far away come to SDCC for? Having been to the best one, I'd like to visit another comic con or Transformers convention in another country. If there weren't any big official coventions here, I might not try to find one out there.
-
I come from Canada, what I find about sdcc is that it has a big draw, artist, guests and companies that I would not normally see. Even the dealers who sell are different. This is the red carpet of shows.
-
There are 2 bigger conventions, in Paris and Tokyo, but I'm guessing that those might have a language barrier for many people.

UPDATED: (31st May 2013): http://batchgeo.com/map/FriendsOfCCIForum2013
Added karl clement and xax, although the map will reflected, there isn't a specific location for them, merely a 'country'. If you are comfortable with telling us where you're are heading to San Diego from, it would make things a lot clearer.

That's an amazing map, thanks leonard

After all the kerfuffle over the forum going down, I had to come back and make sure that I didn't come back to find we'd lost all the additions posts since the last map update which I wanted to add - thankfully, looks like we're all here. One or two changes (gotcha, xax!) and a whole bunch or new pins, coming from quite some distance. Comic-Con International, indeed. Enjoy - and spread the word, let's get this map full...
-
I'll be leading a contingent of 10 (!) of us coming down from Culver City, CA- we all work in film/tv and are professional badge holders. My wife and I are the only veterans of the group, so we'll be using the tips here to help guide a whole group of us around.

I'm coming from the San Francisco area - not all that far. This is my first time - I had no idea something like this even existed until recently. I guess I discovered my inner geek a little late in life (over 40).
Would be fun to meet others from around the world!

Reporting in from west Sacramento. Ready for duty!
Driving the entire clan. It'll be a 12 hr drive(considering eating, picking up a buddy on the way there, gas, stretching our legs, and maybe hitting traffic in L.A.)
Btw, been going to the con since '04 now it's our annual family vacation. :)

Lol, you have that backwards! Sacramento is usually warm and dry in summer, while San Diego, especially near the water, can be quite chilly! (I don't live in Sacramento, but the weather in my area is essentially the same.)

Lol tell me about it!
We drive every year. Since i always get off work at 3, i sleep once i get home. We normally leave at 12:30ish in the morning(that way the kids can sleep till we get half way through L.A.). We'll get breakfast sometime after Anaheim.
-
Wait, your kids sleep in the car????
Mine won't go back to sleep if we get them up in the middle of the night to go to the car. We've tried it on early morning trips to Tahoe and such. However they are good about falling asleep if it's late at night and getting close to bedtime.

I'm totally ballparking here, but IIRC I was reading somewhere that there were 160,000 total attendees (this is counting people who only got some days). Roughly double that to about 300,000 or so as the number of people following the posted information, who are relatively on top of things and crashing the Epic system when badges go on sale. Then add about 100,000 people who want to go and are only paying mild attention, who try to buy badges 5 minutes after 9 am, who miss the email notification because their opt-ins weren't set right, etc. Then another 100,000 'out of it' people who wander over to FB 2 months after the general badge sale and ask how to get tickets... that's my ballparking 500,000.

UPDATED MAP: (19th June 2013) http://batchgeo.com/map/FriendsOfCCIForum2013
Think I've gotten everybody so far - if I've missed anyone, or if you feel your pin is in the wrong place, just give me a holler...
This map is looking brilliant so far, isn't it? Really showing the distances people will travel for this extraordinary event!
-
Northern Virginia near DC
-
Middle Tennessee.
-
Wasilla, Alaska
-
Coming from Hitchin in the United Kingdom, 5457 miles apparently!
-
Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, Ireland
5229 miles
-
Cedar City, Utah. Not all that far, just straight down one highway (i-15) the whole way.
-
my self and LadyS are traveling from Melbourne Aust also
-
Middle Tennessee.
Awesome-me too! I don't know anyone else from this area that's going.

Good way to arrive at SDCC with friends in tow!
-
Sydney, Australia ;D
-
Davis CA! Nor Cal!
Already giddy with the thought of getting up at 3:30am and hittin' the road by 4am! Grapevine in 5 hrs. Swish through LA before noon traffic. Roll down the windows when hitting San Clemente to feel the ocean air. COMIC CON! #13!
-
We are coming from CT! Cannot wait to get out there. I have been out that way 3 times past few years! Had to miss last year because my second daughter was born...u know priorities and all haha.
-
Chicago.
I've traveled to SDCC, C2E2, Dragoncon, and dozens of anime cons throughout the country (including AX, twice). This, however, if my first ever SDCC. I am psyched (and slightly intimidated all the same). Probably my only one for awhile too, so I wanna really live it up and make the most of it.
I've been going to cons for 10 years, and I've been a fan panelist from east to west coast for nearly as long. (IF SDCC allowed more fan panels, I'd be hosting a few. I did a few at Dragoncon last year!)
Still, this is all new to me. The king of all cons! I can't wait.

UPDATED MAP (29th June 2013): http://batchgeo.com/map/FriendsOfCCIForum2013

-
From San Francisco. Took about 8-9 hours each way.
Great to see you here, Monsterbento! I'm from the SF Bay Area as well.
-
Cleveland, OHIO! 2013 was my first year and airfare was actually the biggest part of my budget, but that's not stopping my plan to go again next year! :)
Being my first year, I mostly focused on getting the exclusives I wanted and attending the panels I wanted, so I didn't mingle so much around the con. I did meet some wonderful people in line, with whom I am now Facebook & Twitter friends. But there are also people I unfortunately didn't get to meet in real life whose online presence previous to SDCC13 helped me greatly (you're included in that list ukdeejay!). Who knows what next year will bring... can't wait!
-

Hi! So... I hope to be making it out there from ol PA off on the east coast! And, in light of that, I really want to drive cross country to SDCC since that way I can load up my car with all kinds of swag and not have to mail it back to myself (also, then I can bring blankets if I want to camp out, more crap to get signed, and don't have to worry about smuggling food through airport security). So if anyone wants to carpool from the east coast area let me know, since it doesn't make any financial sense to drive by myself instead of flying, which is cheaper per person. I'm willing to meet/ pick up anyone within a 5 hr drive (so, NY, OH, MD area) before we head west.

Welcome! It's a long drive, but I'm sure you'll fid it a fun roadtrip, especially with company.
Wait, didn't they make a movie about a SDCC roadtrip? And on the way they met an alien? Huh... ;)

I used to live in Alameda! On the actual island too, not on Bay Farm Island (which is really a peninsula... freaky...). It's one of the many places I've lived in Alameda County.
-
Just moved to Hawaii so that's where I'll be coming from this year. :)
-
Northern Kentucky, just South of Cincinnati.
AKA "The Hollows," for all of you Kim Harrison fans ;)

Coming from the San Francisco Bay area. So a quick hop over to Oakland Airport and a 45 min or so flight and i'm in Nerdvana.

I used to do that! Now i drive. Much easier to bring down costumes and take home swag. :D

I'm pretty conscious of what i pick up due to my space issues for sure. So the Captain America shield had to stay @ SDCC that year. :(

Pittsburgh! We will fly into LAX, spend a few days, then drive down for the con. If we stay downtown we'll ditch the rental car and if not we'll stay South of the city during the con and drive in each day like we did last year.
I do hope we get a downtown hotel because we missed the swag exchange meet up last year due to being exhausted and already back at our hotel Sunday night. We would have had to find parking all over again and doing nothing felt sooooooooooo gooooooooood.

I can empathize with that! But just so you know, after the Con is over, the parking clears out, just like the hotels.

My location has changed from Hemet, CA to... about 14 blocks away ^_^

Well the decision isn't 100% sorted yet as to whether I can go, but I'll be coming from England. I've been to SDCC 4 times already, and finally finding money isn't growing on trees. :P
-
Its the flights from the UK that are the killer.

Oh god, tell me about it! We're looking at £1700 at least. It's ridiculous. Last year we got one for £1400 but that was indirect and through Lufthansa. Not sure we'll get away with that this time. So we gotta decide wisely.
-
Since I got super lucky and this year had no problems or crashes I got 4days+preview. I am flying from Jonquiere Quebec Canada to LA and driving from LA to San Diego. Reasons I am going to LA
#1 I could use my 50K miles and fly first class direct from Montreal to LA since Jonquiere to Montreal only has a propeler plane. I could if used 37,500 miles and flew from Montreal to San Diego but I would of flew coach and had a bunch of layovers. Also I arrived at the same time 9pm on Monday.
#2 This lets me say 2 Nights in LA and save money and go to Disney with the savings. Since my 11 yr cousin will be comming on my badge.
This leads to a second question, my Aunt will also be coming since she is his mom hehe. Last year I was unable to get tickets for her so this year I did not try to get he a ticket on pre-release sale. My 2 extra spots went wasted :( But I hear people where able to get tickets for people who did not go last year. I did not want to take a chance of getting an error so I did not try, but anyone know if this rumor is true.
Also how does parking work for the Marriot(convention) and the Hilton(bayside) and how hard is it to park at the two hotels so close to the convention. I hope to get to the closest Hotel with parking to the convention center. Will have to wait for the TP lottery.
Now this leads also to another question, can I enter both me and my Aunt in the Tp lottery and chose between the two for the best hotel?
-
Only if you went last year, rumor not true

If you are staying at the hotel you will be able to park at the hotel. This will involve an extra feel, probably $20-$40 per night.

Yes.

I will be travelling from Perth, Western Australia to attend CCI

Do crows fly that far? ;)
-
I'm traveling a whopping 15 minutes. I'm so tired thinking of it.
lol. In reality, sometimes I half want to get a hotel downtown just for the experience and not having to drive home after all the crazy. But that would be silly since I'm in central San Diego.

I will be driving down from San Francisco for my second Comic-Con!

istanbul,Turkey
7000 miles
-
I will be traveling from New Orleans Louisiana. Total distance 1605 miles.
-
I'm traveling from the SDSU area of San Diego. The past two years I just use the trolley boarding from the SDSU stop. Takes about 45 minutes that way, would be 10 minutes by car. I've considered getting a hotel downtown just for the experience and convenience!
-
I consider myself a local, coming from Grand Terrace, Ca about 90 miles I believe.
-
Yep I'm insane...I'm travelling all the way from Melbourne, Australia lol! Well that's if I get into comic con. But either way, I'm still travelling round the US/Canada for holiday round that time! Would be a bonus to get into comic con!

I will be attending my first con this year, coming from an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean known as Guam. Draw a line south from Tokyo, draw a line east from Manila, where the two lines cross, you find Guam. Offshore to the east is the Marianas Trench. The Aussies and Kiwis still have me beat distance wise, but my total flight time will be the same or greater than a Sydney-LA or Melbourne-LA flight due to layovers. I usually go through Narita before going back to 'Merica.

Wow! I bumped into someone from Australia last year at Comic-Con, so you're not the only one. It's pretty fun just finding out how far everyone has come for the event.
I'm not much of a traveler though, as I live just an hour away from Comic-Con. Still a fun mini-mini road trip though!

A lovely older couple sat next to me in Hall H Sunday was from Melbourne, Australia. I struck up conversation when I saw her playing Plants vs Zombies 2 on her iPad. It wasn't being released for North America for another 2 weeks. :)

I saw a while back that someone from the east coast was considering/had decided to drive to San Diego, I hope their plan works out. Now I am considering going to Vegas for two days after SDCC to use some room vouchers. I was hoping that Amtrak serviced that area, but it does not. You can travel on Amtrak then have to take a bus the rest of the way. I have considered driving and leaving the rental car in Vegas, but I think they charge you more when that happens.
Now....think it's possible to get a ride going east to Vegas for two from a fellow SDCC'er? The plan is to leave San Diego sunday evening and fly out of Vegas tuesday back home. Just a thought, but advice much appreciated.

First post!
I've been going to SDCC for the past 3 years. I relocated to Beijing for work a couple years ago so will be flying back to attend! 8)

This is America... We'll fry just about anything. :)

That's my mission while at SDCC, find a deep fried mars bar vendor. Could go the full Scottish. Chips and cheese, deep fried pizza and then a Mars bar. We're the heart attack capital of Europe for a reason

My ancestry is 50% Scottish.....my love of all things grossly deep-fried is making total sense now and I feel completely validated and justified!

I did that with a mate two years ago, oddly also from Dallas Ft Worth, it was a fantastic experience. Took our time on the way there, stopping at Flagstaff and Las Vegas. The trip back was a bit mental as we did it with only a single overnight stop, which considering we left about 2pm on Sunday was good going. Some of the roads really are in the middle of know where, I remember the GPS stating "In 200 miles, turn right!!" Coming from the Uk I found this hilarious. Back home you cant walk 200 yeards withour falling over someone.
I'd love to do the road trip option again.......maybe 2015!

Coming from Hawaii. This will be our third time at SDCC. Excited already! Especially now that con announcements are trickling in. :D

You've got to love the guy really. I hate politicians that give fake apologies, when you know they don't really give a dam. This guy, he basically says, ---- you , I don't care what you think. I'm mayor, now ---- off. How can you not love that a little bit.

Australian crow, or an American crow?
Errrrrr......is that a quote from Monty Python?
If so, is that from the US release? As the UK release is Swallow instead of Crow.
I just would never have guessed that line would have been changed. Hahaha.

Damn I'm not sure now, Ah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (me flying off the bridge)

Correct. The line wasn't changed. We just changed it to fit our context. We're a little strange that way here at FoCCI. :)

Husband and I are coming from Hobart, Australia :D were in SD at the same time last year on our honeymoon, can't wait to visit again!

Aside from coming from Guam, I am planning to drive cross country from NJ to San Diego. I will be visiting friends along the way (Norfolk, Chicago, Houston, Tuscon) as well as hitting all the MLB parks along the way that I can.

We're certainly stretching across the globe with Guam and Tasmania!

More Aussies! And Guam is far too.
The cross country drive sounds fun with CC there at the finish line. Now that sounds like a nice way to spend a couple weeks (more? lol)

Independence, MO....right next to Kansas City. Anyone else going from here? I am going alone. Would love to know some fellow people from around here are going as well.
-
It would be interesting if there was a chart or map where we could put down where we are all coming from. I know there are a large majority from the US and I see quite a few from Australia, but it would be fun to see a world map and then people put where they are coming from.

Hubby and I are coming from Alaska. This will be our second Comic Con! :)
We were going to go last year too. We had our badges and our hotel and everything but then on July 7 (my birthday!) my dad got sick and I had to fly to the Netherlands as I am Dutch and all my family lives there. After 2 weeks my dad passed away. It was a horrible time... All year we looked towards SDCC after an already rough year. Then that happened...
Everything was already paid for and the cancellation dates were passed. When my husband called to see if it was possible to get a refund after what happened they just hung up the phone on him.. So friggin rude. We lost our hotel deposits, money for the badges etc. Oh well..
Anyway.. this year we are going for sure and it is also our 5 year wedding anniversary so hopefully we get a decent hotel tomorrow! :) I am super excited we get to go again!
-
Spoox, I'm glad that after all of that, you are able to go this year! You have an amazing life attitude!

We are coming from South Carolina. This is our second year attending. We're hoping that as long as we can get badges each year, this will be a yearly vacation. :)

I'm really looking forward to it this year. Last year we didn't bring our kids because they weren't interested and I was 5 months pregnant. This year we're only bringing our 8 year old (the oldest doesn't want to fly). I'm excited to enjoy myself more and introduce my daughter to something we love.

I am the same way! I love bringing my kids and having them see the whole world of SDCC. They get to experience all of the cool stuff and meet people who have the same interests they do! And when they get to meet someone they admire, it makes their whole year!

Agreed. I just read through all of the posts and I can't believe how far some people are traveling! I'm happy they get to make the trip. Maybe I will bump into some of you at the Con! Enjoy and be safe!
-
For all of the people who travel from very far away, do you also travel to other international cons, like Tokyo and Paris? Those are cons I would love to attend some day, but don't, due to the distance involved.
-
I've been to London Comic-Con, but I didn't travel there specifically for that (in fact, my friends and I kind of stumbled upon it).
I wouldn't go to a con in Tokyo, maybe Paris because I can do it by train or a short flight. I'd consider other US cons, if I could combine it with a citytrip or something. For instance NYCC might be a nice trip together with some NYC sightseeing.

Don't forget - while the title of the thread is 'Where are you coming from?', it's more of a Friends Of CCI members map (I'm wondering if I should change that...) so you don't neccasarily have to be attending SDCC in 2014 to be listed on here.

Ahh, right - when I first put this thread together, I created a map which was linked in the first post but looks like someone's set up another map in my absence! That's what happens when you disappear for a while!
It's a bit late here in the UK, where I am... In the morning, I'll look at the pins in the stand-in map and transfer them over. Thanks for pointing it out, cracks.

Someone suggested a map and I mentioned that you had set one up, but at the time this happened, your map was very out of date. So another map was set up which allowed everyone to add their own pins. However that one did not include some of the earlier posts, so I'm glad you updated yours, Leonard!
-
Oh! You don't have to do that! I'm pretty new and wasn't sure if I was getting confused. It might even be another thread. Im on my phone right now and it's not as easy for me to look around. Thanks for the map!

Add me to the map, pwease? Coming from West Olive, MI. Unfortunately. Because I don't like it here. It's cold.

Flying from Orlando, FL. Was going to do a cross country road trip.

For all of the people who travel from very far away, do you also travel to other international cons, like Tokyo and Paris? Those are cons I would love to attend some day, but don't, due to the distance involved.
It's something I would consider, if I were tying in other stuff while I was there. I'd like to go to Japan anyway, so I can't see how going to a con could possibly make that trip worse lol. Same with Europe in general - I'd like to go at some point, so if I could work something out I would do it.

I'm coming from Winona, MN, USA.

Like TJ said it was out of date and creating a map where people could edit it themselves seemed the best solution. Plus, this thread is 19 pages and people move. Hope you don't feel like I stepped on your toes.

No, not at all. My bad for leaving it so long in the first place.

Train? 36 hours? Holy $#!7

Do you have a sleeper car? It sounds like it would be worth it!
-
no sleeper car, but I've been on the train before and it's pretty roomie and comfy, I'm sure the seat next to me will be open.
It should be pretty great to go through West Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, then Wednesday morning down the California Coast. I always love riding the train, everyone stops and watches a passing train, it's like you're part of a parade.

Hi guys, I'm from Solihull in the UK.
This will be my first time at a comic con and first trip to America. ;D This is so exciting, just hoping to get tickets! :-[
I booked the hotel room with my friend when the SDCC dates were released last August.
If we don't manage to get tickets, we're still planning on having an amazing time in San Diego, I'm sure there's plenty to see and do ;)
-
Living in San Diego, I must say that seeing so many from all over the world really feels exciting to me!
-
I wish I lived in San Diego. No, wait, I wish America wasn't so far away and the flights didn't take so long. Like maybe a 3 hour flight instead of 13 hours or more.
-

Lol! IKR! ;D
I've got a 17hr journey with connecting flights (also never done connecting flights either). :-[
-
I had a connecting flight in Philadelphia last year. I think we spent about 5 hours in that airport. From leaving my house in the morning to arriving in SD in the evening I think 24 hours had past. Thanks, 9 hour time difference.) If I go alone I'm not looking forward to waiting in airports.

Wow, that's a real labour of love! If I were you' I'd bring loads of tech. I've got a 3.5hr wait at Newark before flying out to San Diego. I'm sure it'll all be totally worth it. ^-^
-
2014 was the first time I went as well. And we didn't even have badges. From where are you in France? :)
Paris :)
-
Paris :)
Do you attend the Paris Comic Con? I have heard that it's even bigger than SDCC! I would love to go some day, but it's not in the cards yet.
-
Do you attend the Paris Comic Con? I have heard that it's even bigger than SDCC! I would love to go some day, but it's not in the cards yet.
Well it's quite different, because on one side you have the Japan Expo which is huge (but dedicated to manga which is not really my thing) and the Paris Comic Con which up until last year was a really small event (taking place at the same time and convention center than the Japan Expo).
This year they will be separated from the Japan Expo - but for now, SDCC is waaaaayyyy bigger (again, not considering the Japan Expo attendance).
And I don't believe they will ever get the level of involvment that SDCC gets from movie studios for example.
-
Wow, that's very interesting to hear. The information I had seen before said that Paris was the second biggest comic con in the world, after Tokyo. You certainly give a different perspective!
-

If you like/love mangas, animes and everything Japanese, Japan Expo is definitely worth the trip (from what I heard, I have actually never been).
But for now, the Comic Con part is probably 5% of what SDCC is.
-
Hello! :)
I come from Italy! :)

I'm coming from Northern California. A city called, Roseville, just a couple miles north of Sacramento.

Welcome, Tarishamilitia and Tag177! I've never been to Oaklahoma, but I've been to Roseville many times (usually driving up to Tahoe and back).

I can finally say I'm coming from New Jersey, I have been unsuccessful for the past 5 years in obtaining badges, but I never gave up!

Thanks for the welcome :) This forum has been helpful to me so far

One of my first posts, but I'm coming from Sacramento, CA. Can't wait for that road trip in July.
-
Congratulations on getting badges, Six2middnight! It seems like you put in a lot of effort, so it's nice to finally have it rewarded!
I'm roadtripping too, Krday. I'm in the SF East Bay. I-5 all the way!
-
Congratulations on getting badges, Six2middnight! It seems like you put in a lot of effort, so it's nice to finally have it rewarded!
Thank You! It was an amazing feeling one of joy, I might of cried a bit, just a tear or two lol. Now I'm nervous now with the hotel lottery aka the hotelpocalypse, although I think the badge purchasing was more nerve wrecking. This is my first time so I could be wrong.
-
FWIW, you don't *have* to go through Hotelmageddon (my personal, preferred term for the Hotel Hell Lottery). It is possible to book a hotel or condo directly (although they are getting scarce,as we're getting closer to con now) and there is also the Early Bird Sale, if you don't mind being on the shuttle route and not downtown.

I tried looking into condos on airbnb, but there was no availability in the downtown area (mostly private rooms). I do prefer to stay downtown or within walking distance <1.5 miles, so that I don't have to rely on the shuttle and I can come an go easily. But if all else fails I will book one further away but along the shuttle route. It's me and one other person, so I'm hopeful that we'll get a room during the lottery in that area (positive thoughts :) ). Thanks for the tip though!
-
I'll be coming all the way from Germany with a wee trip to Vancouver right before the Con. I can't wait!
-

Thanks for the welcome! This is going to be my first SDCCI ever! But, it won't be my last! I was lucky enough to have been chosen as a Volunteer. SDCCI has been on my bucket list for so long and after trying unsuccessfully to buy the badges, I went the Volunteer route.
-
I'm coming from Texas! This will be my first SDCC and I'm so excited. Going with my BFF and hopefully we can do this every year. I've done trips like this before but for concerts, so I think I'm prepared. My bestie...not so much but she's getting there.
-
Sounds like you have things well in hand, pulelehua! Hope you have fun at the con!
-
Will be driving from San Antonio TX to San Diego. My wife and I love road trips.
Anyone else coming from Texas or from that direction that may need a lift and want to pitch in for gas.
Will be leaving TX on July 7, tuesday, arriving in San Deigo Wednesday morning. Leaving back to Texas on July 13th, Monday and arriving Tuesday 14th. Its a 20h drive one way. Taking hwy 10 through arizona then hwy 8 the rest of the way.
-
That's a long roadtrip, Cuellar! But I think I have seen other people from Texas around the forums. You might find someone! Try the Hotels, Parking & Transportation board.
-
I'm coming from Maryland.... 1st time! Can't wait and my daughter is still saying to me that she can't believe we got tickets. :D

I'm sure you guys will have a blast! My kdis are now spoiled, attending every year, but they'll gt a rude awakening that year they can't get badges...
Just wondering, are you Emerald Mom because you attend ECCC?

No just a name based on birthstone ::)

No just an name based on birthstone ::)
Then (if I am remembering the birthstones correctly) we have the same birth month!
-
This is my very first SDCC, and I'm extremely excited, but also nervous! My friends and I got Thursday/Sunday badges, which was a bit of a disappointment at first, but there is so much else I want to do in San Diego that I'm totally fine with it. I'm coming from the Cincinnati area. I'll be rooming with my friends but flying solo since they live in another part of the country. They haven't finalized their dates yet, but I'll be there 7/8-7/14.
I have a backup hotel reservation about a mile from the convention center but will be participating in the lottery to try to get closer and cheaper.
Any other Ohioans out there? I live closer to Cincinnati but am flying out of Columbus to save a couple hundred dollars. Need every penny for the hotel!
-
Second time going to SDCC! missed out in 2014. will be coming from Virginia with Thurs-Sun badges!

First time attending. Was fortunate enough to get Thursday and Sunday thanks to this forum and a buying group. Will be traveling from sunny Buffalo NY. Will be staying a full 7 days and I'm beyond excited.

It's been on my bucket list for a couple of years now, along with visiting the San Diego Zoo, so I'll get to check two things off. I don't know if I can afford for it to become an addiction!
I'm originally from Columbus (but have lived in Phoenix since 1996). I'll be visiting Cincinnati in August. Go Buckeyes!! And Bengals and Reds :)
I'm no Buckeyes fan (I went to college in Pittsburgh), but I do love my Bengals! And I actually will be passing through the Phoenix airport on my way to San Diego. I'm also a big Doctor Who fan. I've spent the last year and a half making my way through the classic episodes. Watching an episode from season 15 as I type!

I can finally say I'm coming from New Jersey, I have been unsuccessful for the past 5 years in obtaining badges, but I never gave up!
I'm coming from Los Angeles but it also took me 5 years of patience to finally secure a badge on my own. Last year I went as a guest after failing on my own in general reg. It's true, anything is possible.
-
I'll be flying in from Long Island. Scored badges in only my second year trying. After reading stories of how long people have tried before being successful, I'm definitely counting my blessings.

It definitely sounds like luck was with you, Robbie!

I'm coming from Scotland. First time at SDCC, first time trying. I feel ridiculously lucky. I'm in Boston and San Francisco beforehand too which should be awesome.

Used to live in San Diego, but moved up to San Francisco for work last year. Coming back for SDCC.

It's a great reason to make the trip back!

What part of VA? That's where I am now! I'll be doing an internship in Michigan and will be flying from there.
-
Will be coming from North Carolina for the third year! Wish I could just snap my fingers and be there, not a super huge fan of flying.
-
I'm coming from England for my first time at SDCC and first time travel to the US. Staying in San Diego at the Hilton Bayfront for a few days after Comic Con then off to New York!
-
I am coming from Calgary Alberta Canada and I am sooooo stoked I won the nerd power ball lottery ( aka 4 day sdcc pass). I was last at the con 4 years ago and it was one of the best experiences of my life.

I'm coming from Chattanooga, TN.
This is my second year coming. Last year, I was a volunteer. This time, my sister and I both scored badges, which is amazing. L

This is our second year attending. Driving all the way from Tulsa, OK. We love roadtrips and (added bonus) didn't have to worry about sending any con goodies home.

Flying from Houston on the Thursday morning stopping in phoenix for a layover (southwest 2952/1889) !
Anyone coming from Houston? Anyone on my flight?!

Calgary, Alberta Canada - Can't wait to get to San Diego, it's been 4 years since my last Con which I rank as one of the best life experiences I've ever had. This time I was a little better informed (and lucky) and am not in hotel circle but at the Marriott Marquis and Marina this time and hoping that having essentially 0 travel time this year makes things that much more awesome!

Hello there, ellyria! Welcome to the forums! I'm sure it'll be much more convenient now that you'll be staying at the Marriott Marquis and Marina.
If you haven't had a chance to do so, please take some time to introduce yourself in our Introductions/Welcome Thread, and tell us about the kinds of things you're looking forward to doing or seeing at Comic-Con this year as well as some of your interests.

About 20ish minutes north of the Convention Center (technically called "north county" but more like central part of San Diego county): yea for not having to worry about hotels, or worry too much about parking nonsense

from North Carolina, this will be my 2nd visit to SDCC. My 1st visit was 2013.

Sunny Tampa Florida.

SAME. Except I am sharing a hotel with some friends from out of town anyway and I am from East County haha It'll be my first time trying it out this year.
-
Coming from SF Bay Area. May have to change my road trip this year from a low stress two day ramble down the coast to a straight drive through.
Any advice about whether to take 5 or 405 through LA would be appreciated. I usually come off the coast and go 405 (ugh). Is 5 less crazy or about the same?

If it's not rush hour, then 5 is fine. If it is rush hour, use Waze or some other app on your phone to guide you through. Generally speaking the 'best' route is a combination of different roadways, not all of which are highways.

St Petersburg Fl!

I'll be driving in from Sioux Falls South Dakota. Road Trip!!

About 500 miles north of convention center ;D

I am coming from Santa Clarita, CA :)

We're coming from West Virginia! It will be our third SDCC, our last was in 2010!
-
Toronto, Canada. Staying with family in Rancho Penasquitos.

;D We are coming from Newcastle, just north of Sydney, Australia! Can't wait for Comic-Con, 3 more sleeps and we head off to the US! :D

Dublin Ireland :)
I'll probably spend a little over a day in airports and planes before landing in Minnesota and then Flying from there to San Diego for the Convention.... Thankfully we'll be arriving a few days before the Con dates :o
-
San Diego County (specifically Carlsbad), California for now
I believe the last time I posted it had me up in Santa Barbara, as I'd be up at school at the time. But I'm officially out of that city and back in SD semi-permanently. Of course, with my luck I'll end up in SF, LA or even across the country for work by the time SDCC rolls around... or I'll be back in school for another degree/certification and hating myself but very likely still in SD at least?
-
Dublin Ireland :)

ah cool some one else from Ireland! I'm coming from Ireland as well, (I'm from Offaly). I'm going to be in the States for a few weeks before SDCC though as I'm visiting a friend but heading to SD for the week regardless of if I get a badge or not. See you over there!

Ha; when I flew over to Britain a few years ago it does take the better part of a day. Luckily, San Diego has direct flights to London with British Air, so maybe you won't have to fly to the midwest if you go Dublin-London-San Diego.
Last spring I flew to Austria, and the flight home was Austria-Amsterdam-Minnesota-San Diego; from the time I woke up to the time I got my bags it was around 26 hours.
Not fun, but I love Europe (and San Diego) so it's worth it!
I hope you, and other folks flying International, enjoy my city as much as I do!!
-
Coming from the Oh-so-very-much-warm Middle east :)
Both me and the Boy Friend are taking the flight through the UK hoping that the time won't make us go completely insane :o
it sums up to about 34 hours of being in planes and airports ><" It's going to be a hoot with his fear of flights...

Flying in from The Land! Cleveland, Ohio 8)

Wow that sounds crazy/awesome! The few times I've flown internationally (never to the Middle East, but to Australia which was KILLER long) I've taken sleeping pills and slept when the stewardesses said to: that helps adjust to the gnarly time difference though a 9ish hour difference would be difficult regardless. Last spring I flew to Austria (which is 8 hour difference from San Diego where I live) and I honestly didn't have too many problems when I came home; the flight got in evening time and I went to bed earlier than I normally do but still around 8 or 9 or something at night. That was a rough travel day, as I figured out we spend about 27 hours from call time in the lobby of the hotel to jump on the shuttle bus until we touched down in San Diego (with a crazy long layover in Minnesota). If you're flying from London, you can at least get a non-stop flight from London - San Diego so hopefully that would help.
Hopefully you guys can fly in a day or two early to be able to adjust. For me personally Comic-Con is pretty draining, and I sleep in my own bed and drive about 20/25 minutes to the convention center; doing Comic-Con w/an International jet lag would be difficult
-
Coming from the East Coast--rural North Carolina. Howdy y'all! ;)
-
That'd be way north of Chicago...nearing the WI border.
-
Flying from Sydney Australia and I will be landing day 1 of SDCC. Wasn't a good idea booking flights before securing a badge since I got Thursday and Sunday badges so jetlag is going to be very interesting
-

That is the plan right now :)
We will be landing at the 19th in the evening and we don't have tickets for PN so we have the 20th to get our without standing in lines for hours straight :)
We do plan on picking up the tickets at the 20th as well so that we won't have to stand in lines the next day... Though I did understand that it is very organized at tickets pick up :) so I am less worried about that.
-
As long as you have a copy of the barcode, you should have minimal drama getting in to pick up your badge. Have a safe flight!
-
Coming from the Windy City.
-
Coming from the DFW area of Texas. This will be my 6th SDCC and my mom and I always road trip it out to San Diego. We've done a lot of side trips and site-seeing along the way every year: Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Carlsbad, Roswell, White Sands, Saguaro Nat'l Park, etc. There's a lot of great stuff to see on both the Northern and Southern routes there and back.
-
Coming from DC
-
Coming in from Maryland. Bet we have enough people coming in from the mid-Atlantic area that we could have our own plane... ;)

Coming from Wales but flying from London. So excited :)

San Antonio, TX! 2nd Year attending/volunteering
-
I come down from Santa Barbara, CA.
Usually, the night before we leave, I take the Amtrak down to Anaheim, where all my friends live.
The next morning, we all take the train down to SD for CC. It's always a great way to start our girls only vacation. We have tons of laughs on the train ride down. I can't wait.
-
My sister and I are coming from Jacksonville, Florida. This will be her first SDCC, and it has been 4 years since I've been able to get tickets. I know she will have such a great time. We are in the slightly older crowd and have loved being a part of all types of fan gatherings. I am so excited for her.
-
Fellow Texan here! I'm from the DFW area.

I'm coming from Winnipeg, Manitoba! :)

San Antonio, TX! 2nd Year attending/volunteering
My daughter and I are coming from San Antonio as well and its our 2nd year too! We live in Schertz, Universal City area.

I'll be coming from Minnesota. This will be my third time at SDCC, but I've missed the last two years due to not getting a badge.
-
Grand Blanc, MI - 2nd year for my hubby and I. :)
-
We are coming from Los Angeles (what a trek)! I highly recommend taking the train if you live nearby to save money on parking! And its super fun and pretty and you don't have to drive and you can sleep and eat!
-

I'm coming from Los Angeles and riding Amtrak as well. The good thing this year is that Del Mar opening day is before SDCC this year so no punchdrunk passengers at 7 am boarding.
-
Coming in from Washington D.C.! Varied group this year. It's my 4th, my roommate's 3rd, and her sister's 1st SDCC! And we go with some friends who've been around for longer. Airfare is the most expensive part of Comic Con for us.
-
Coming from Canada also! Got 4+preview night and was over the moon 8). But then got shelter island hotel, which was a super bummer, 'cause I was hoping to get the FULL experience. I can't afford to attend every year... Look forward to everything else though :)
-
Monterey CA.
-
Torrance, CA; not too bad of a drive! I like San Diego a lot, and don't get a chance to visit it often, so I'm glad SDCC gives me an excuse to come out.
-
Moscow, Russia
Hope to visit for the 3d time :)

Another Texan - Keep Austin Weird!
-
Coming from Tampa Florida (we hope). Started as a birthday present for my son many years ago and has become a family tradition.
-
Orlando, FL
Always fly direct if I can, i hate having to lay over in ATL in the summer and miss a connection.
-
Coming in from NYC for the third year.
Native Californian, so it was always my plan growing to go to SDCC and I didn't let moving East stop me! I love picking out the other Con-goers on my flight from JFK each year.

Glasgow, Scotland :)

Taking my first trip to SDCC from New Mexico...

Not super far, San Francisco Bay Area.

Taking the train down is assume! Its leaving SD on Sunday night that gets a little hectic.
-
We're considering doing the train from LA this year (with business class tickets for Sunday night so it's not too insane). The only consideration is luggage. I cosplay at least 3 days so it can be a lot, even though my costumes aren't generally large-prop-heavy.
-
Driving from Dallas, Texas to Las Vegas then driving down to San Diego in Wednesday.

Greece, travelling all the way from Athens. 4th SDCC for me.
Always do a big trip same time as SDCC, and enjoy a road trip in US.
Not sure if any others from Greece are attending, who might be members of this forum, would be great to meet up.

Mine needs to be updated, because the last time I posted in here I was still up at university in Santa Barbara/Goleta, CA. Personally, Carlsbad, CA; so North County San Diego and it's a really quick trip for me.
My roommates/close friends: one from Davis, CA; one from L.A., CA; and one from Irvine, CA. So we're all at least in-state. The one from Davis generally flies into LAX and has the L.A. resident pick her up from the airport, AND they pick up the girl from Irvine on the way to me.

This will be our first time attending comic-con (wife and I) - I think this is also my first post.
Coming from Toronto, but we will be doing D23 in Anaheim the week before. Luckily we have sorcerer's tickets for D23, so almost no lines for anything there.
So far have 5 day tickets for SDCC, along with tickets for hopcon and h00tstock. Wasn't able to get the Funko Funday tickets (my online ticket-fu finally failed).
I will say I've been lurking on this board for a while now during the planning stages for this trip, and it has been a great resource.
I personally can't wait for the insanity to start (the wife is a little scared).
Looking for info on line groups, but I guess those don't really form up until the schedule is out. We have our helinox chairs and are ready to go.

Oh yeah, sounds like you've had some amazing luck on tickets this year! Also looks like you are reallly prepping for the insanity too. It will serve you well! I also recommend a nice wide-brimmed hat to help you out and PLENTY of sunscreen.

Manhattan, KS!

Manhattan, KS!
I'm sure it's true in lots of places, but I love how many cities in that part of the US share names with other places. We have relatives in Columbia, MO and in our first trip there we flew into Kansas City and during our stay we drove through Paris by way of Mexico to get to Florida. Not to mention a side trip to Lebanon where we saw a sign for, but did not visit, Montreal.

I know!! There's a lot of shared-name places, especially around here it seems. Manhattan, Kansas is also referred to as the "Little Apple", a fun tidbit on it ;D I always have to make sure I clarify when people ask where I'm from, because they automatically think I mean New York.
-
Carlsbad, CA; so North County San Diego and it's a really quick trip for me.
Howdy neighbor!! I'm here too!! Well, right where Vista, O'side and Carlsbad meet. You are staying downtown? We are commuting.
-
flying down from SF, my brother is flying out from Central NY for our first and only SDCC. So far great Comic Con love - both got 4 days badges - thanks to FoCC buying group. And a room at the MGH, 2 beds. We are poised to maximize our SDCC experience.
-
Melbourne Australia just a short 18hr ish flight.
-
Howdy neighbor!! I'm here too!! Well, right where Vista, O'side and Carlsbad meet. You are staying downtown? We are commuting.
Oh! Hello neighbor (probably Tri-City areaish then)!! I'm in South Carlsbad, almost La Costa (like South Ponto a few blocks away.) We're staying at the Bayfront, we had a back-up Gaslamp Hotel res. too. We always camp out at least one night (in recent years we've agreed to only do one night, unless something amazing is happening.) So we need to be at least in the area (even MV,) so we can stay overnight easily.
I've commuted before though, with my brother and Dad, but that was about 15-16 years ago ^^;
-
After attending from 2008-2016 as a San Diego resident (lived in the Clairemont area), I moved (back) to San Jose in January. Been banking all the vacation time since day one of my new job to drive down to southern California for ~10 days so I can do the D23 and SDCC double dip. Will be staying with my former housemates. It's going to be my first time back since moving so looking forward to catching up with friends before the craziness kicks in.
-
I am always impressed with the folks who come internationally for SDCC. Comicon is an amazing show, and I can definitely understand why people would travel to come here. I have met a number of folks over the years who have flown in from Australia, Europe, and Asia. It's really amazing. Hoping that all of you long-distance travelers have a great trip!
As for me, I'm a local, but often have friends and family from the East Coast who make the trip out here to go to comicon.
-
Canadian Maritimes here; this will by my fifth SDCC. I'm counting the days to get out of our rainy summer.
-
Last year was the first year I had missed SDCC in 11 years! Typically I would drive or take the train down from LA.
This is the first year I'm coming in from Tennessee. I will have to fly through Atlanta on my way.
-
Fourth SDCC this year :) Previously I was coming from South Carolina (well, 2015 I arrived in San Diego via Hawaii because I'd been on vacation) but I recently relocated to Orlando FL. At least now I get to take a direct flight, though :)

Is that the pre-SDCC event in LA? I think I saw something about that but we have no plans with that yet. We are still waiting to hear if we have tickets Tuesday night to a TV recording, so that day's still up in the air. We are driving down to San Diego on Wednesday, we can meet-up at the convention sometime if you'd like - always happy to advise on Iceland.

We are driving down to San Diego on Wednesday, we can meet-up at the convention sometime if you'd like - always happy to advise on Iceland.
Awesome. There's a casual forum meetup Tuesday outside of the Hilton Bayfront, but let's definitely try to chat a bit during SDCC. I'll send you a PM.

I'll be coming from Colorado in 2018! My friend from high school is coming for the first time. My two other roommates are coming from Chicago and Virginia.
-
Third straight SDCC coming from deep in the heart of Texas!
-
Flying in from Australia for my first comic con but will be my 4th trip to USA.

I hope you have a blast! I always get extra excited when I see people coming from extra far away.

Thanx! I'm sure I will have the best time, comic con will be near the end of my month away with Disneyland for my last few days!!
-
2018 will be my 7th SDCC! As always, my boyfriend and I will be coming from Tucson, Arizona. If anyone's local or wants to chat the con, feel free to hit us up :D

We are about 80 Miles (LA) so will either drive or train down :)

Luckily I'm only coming from LA. NYCC is my one long distance con a year.
-
I'm flying in from the east coast--North Carolina to be specific. Got a couple line buddies from Tampa that I keep in touch with on the regular, as well as another from the San Diego area. This will be my 3rd SDCC.
-
I come from the Bay Area! Fly down first thing Wednesday morning.
-
Atlanta, GA!
:)
Anyone else?
-
Coming from Florida. First time on the west coast for me!

I'm coming from Spain! It's my first (and probably last, for me it's a once-in-a-life experience) Comic-Con and I'm going solo.
So, two of the biggest Comic-Con fears, together. I'll talk, walk, watch and have fun - even if I'm not bilingual!

I visited Spain (madrid) for the first time last fall! I loved it and can't wait to go back! I stumbled a lot with language too but had so much fun trying to figure everything out and use my limited Spanish skills. San Diego does have a lot of Spanish speakers so a lot of the locals working in the hotels and such might be able to answer questions too.

Train from LA for me! Ticket's official! (Get those Sunday biz class seats while you can, friends!!!)

[member=7342]Antisocial[/member] nice! I went to Iceland two years ago and going again this August to run the Reykjavik marathon!
Anyways, I'm coming from LA and taking the greyhound bus from Long beach to downtown San Diego, drops you right on 12th and imperial station and I just walk to the con form there :)
Nice to see all these people coming form all different cities, I hope ya'll enjoy your time! :)

You'll be fine, as has been said before: there's a lot of people in SD who speak Spanish!

Wow, that’s cool 8) We met [member=4270]mark[/member] last year on the Sunday just before he went to Iceland with his family - it’s great to hear people on here are interested in visiting Iceland, never mind running the marathon (something I’ve made sure never to do myself ;D ). Hope it all goes well and that you have an awesome time!

It was beautiful there, and very relaxing. (Well except for the Costco.) Look for my new travelogue, "Roundabouts and One-lane Bridges." ;)
We're just taking the boring SFO -> SAN flight again this year but for the first time in a while my wife and daughter are joining us for SDCC.

Oh wow, you braved the Icelandic Costco?!! ??? And survived it?!! :o The arrival of that store last year was crazy; Icelanders generally get very excited about foreign stores setting-up in the country, but the response to Costco was off the scale - the idea of some proper competition coming to the island was very warmly welcomed ;D
I’ll be sure to check-out the travelogue 8)

From Singapore. I've been wanting to go to SDCC since 2006 when I first learned about it. It took me 12 years of waiting, saving, and luck but I'm going for the first time this year!

You will have a great time. It will be less humid compared to Singapore.

Whew, thank goodness.
Do I need to slap on insect repellent though? Does San Diego have mosquitoes or annoying flies in the summer?

Negative. No bugs here. San Diego doesnt get hot enough for summer bugs. It's in the 70s all summer.

It has been on the warm side the last few years. Considering it's the end of July though we are blessed it's that mild. Drive 1.5 hrs north to riverside and it's 105 lol.
Atleast we get that marine layer til noon and if it's gonna hit the 80s it's for a short time before it starts cooling off.

I'm from Phoenix. I'm not complaining about 80 degrees! But it does seem like every year there's a heat wave during SDCC.
-
The con is near the water and is quite open aired, so you get a nice breeze. Try being in Manhattan in July.

San Diego is not tropical like Singapore. There is very little in terms of biting insects. I only get bitten maybe once or twice a year. It's too dry and the city is very aggressive in educating people on the mosquito dangers of having stagnant water after the infrequent rains. I walk around the yard and overturn anything with water in it.
I miss the food courts in Singapore. I wish we had those here.

Fourth Comic-Con this year and I'm coming from New Jersey this time! Last year I flew in from Virginia, so it will be a little bit of a longer flight haha. Anyone else coming from NJ?

Nah. You want sunscreen. Not bug repellent.

I know I said it's not a problem in a previous post, but this week I've been bitten four times all on my feet. I've had to give up flip flops for now and wear shoes for the protection. I kill 1 or 2 mosquitoes a night in the house. Still nothing compared to SEA.

Thanks for the update. I'm still bringing it either way. I've always been prone to being bit so it doesn't hurt to be safe than sorry. ;)

I live at the equator, I know what to prepare for summer weather lol.

It was on the local news today that it's one of the worst mosquitoes season in years.
-
Out of habit, I did slap on insect repellent all through out comic con. Only got one bite on my hand on the last day.

Darn it >:( :(
I don't watch the news so I haven't been following mosquito problems. I've lived in San Diego since July 1999 and I've never been bitten by a mosquito in San Diego; I can't say for certain, but I don't recall ever even seeing a mosquito in San Diego before. This report bums me out, even if the situation is still radically better than where I moved from (OH).

Where do you live? I live/teach a bit inland and I haven't seen any mosquitos (I teach HS band, and didn't hear of any student or staff getting bitten by mosquitos where we're at, at least).
Bummed if this will be a bad mosquito season

Us too, lived in and attended Comiccon every year since the mid-90’s in San Diego, now we live in Rockwall Texas, about 1400 miles away from the Convention Center.
-
Coming from Georgia. I couldn't attend 2019 due to health issues, and 2020 was shut down to Covid, and then 2021, couldn't get badges for 2022. So happy, me and my brother are coming back to San Diego. This is probably the first time that we are flying first class to SDCC. Figured we could splurge a bit since this is like a return back.
-
So I'm in LA. Have been my entire life. SDCC is a fairly easy trip, logistics-wise. This past October, we went to NYCC and it was... expensive and a total pain to get there and get everything we acquired back. Really gave me a newfound appreciation for people who travel long distances to come to SDCC. My hats off to you people who are coming from abroad.

We're about an hour south of you on Cedar Creek Lake. We decided to take the Amtrak out of Dallas and fly back. Hopefully they fix the track situation from LA to San Diego otherwise we'll have to bus between the outage.
-
Now that I've moved _slightly_ closer, I'm coming from roughly 20 miles up the 15 (technically 1.6 miles closer according to maps  - I'm three exits further south, and now the entrance ramp I'll take to get on the freeway is directly connected to the express lane so woohoo for that ease of transportation :drinking24: )

Coming from just down the street, Los Angeles

Flying in from the Florida coast. The California heat doesn't bother me. I'm used to hotter temperatures, high humidity, and taking a water bottle everywhere. 8)
