A couple tidbits that don’t mean much at this point:

The new dates are up on WSCC’s website but estimated attendance is only 14,000 (per day). Previously (and previous years) it was 25,000.

https://wscc.com/events?nodes_granular_dates=&exposed_year_month_2021=2021-12

ReedPop event director Kristina Rogers says they are considering holding the 2022 show a bit later (than March/April) to space things out, but haven’t decided for sure.

What does everyone think of the badge options? I was surprised to see the premium packages available. Fanatic gets first access to exhibit floor, Collector gets first access to Artists' Alley, and Superfan gets guaranteed access to Main Stage.

So they just sent out an email this morning, stating that the badge sales were August 2 and 3. But their website (and previous email) say August 3 and 4. My guess is that this morning's email is a mistake...?

They also announced their first guests: Levar Burton and a number of people from My Hero Academia.

Lol, zero comments about this morning's badge sale so far.

Picked up mine shortly after 10. I didn't check again until 10:45 but 4 day passes were sold out. Most of the premium packages are also sold out now (except the comic fan package) but all single days are still available.

Yep, badges didn't sell out nearly as fast as in the past, although all 4 day badges were gone within the first hour. Interestingly 4-days sold out before the premium badges.

I haven't seen details on the official hotel block yet... did I miss something?

I do have a backup reservation at the Sheraton that I made last year when moved the dates to December.

Nope, ECCC tweeted that official hotel booking begins Thursday, August 26 at 12:00 PM PT

I booked at the Hyatt Place (1 mile away but very nice rooms) a couple months ago for $80/night. Unless the block is much lower than it has been the past few years, I’m keeping my reservation.

I don't think you'll get a much better rate than that!

I booked the Sheraton at $182 back when they first announced these dates. Today I was able to book it for $160. So $22 per night isn't too bad... at least it's a discount!

I realize that this is a strange year, and yes, I'm happy they're having a convention at all...but yeesh, that lineup. LeVar Burton is cool, I suppose Hayden Christensen and John Cena are somewhat interesting. But other than that, it's basically an anime convention. I also have to wonder if there was any reason to announce the McElroys (who??) other than to make the guest list look 8 spots bigger. :-\

I was looking and looked like they are up against LA Comic Con so maybe trouble getting folks to travel but there was also a FB post they had more guests to announce. They need to give us something or folks are going to cancel. We’re not at that point just yet.

Well NYCC also talked about more guests for awhile, then finally added some shortly before the con — some people from The Boys, a couple from BSG, and a few others.  No big names though.

Apparently, a podcasting family. And apparently, popular enough to charge $20 for their evening panels on Thursday and Friday...or so ECCC thinks.  ::)

I noticed that it was the same week as LACC too, but ECCC has always had way more stature than LACC. Though that may not be the case after this year. Making the McElroy thing their centerpiece is embarrassing.

The Boys seem to have been making the rounds. One thing that makes me not sure if ECCC is going to get them is that another con in the same market this season that they are on good terms with had them (Rose City) and they may not want to duplicate, although they might if they're available as repeat Boys is probably better than no more guests. I'd also settle for a handful of studio panels, even low-to-mid grade ones.

I don’t think ECCC has ever had studio panels.
The Boys cast has been making the rounds, but Rose City is also put on by a different company.  And they could also go with different cast members than the ones that appeared there.

Not studio *panels*, but in 2019 they had sneek peeks of upcoming AMC shows (episodes screened in advance).

ECCC has had studio panels. They’ve been few and far between, but they’ve had them. Falling Skies in 2012, Voltron in 2018. Also a couple DreamWorks panels were scheduled for 2020 (Kipo, She-ra) although the scheduled guests from those were behind the scenes personnel.

A couple new (and very welcome) announcements:

Twisted Toonz will be back! This year will feature Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, Nolan North, Steve Blum, Ross Marquand, and Dee Bradley Baker reading Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Dante Basco, Janet Varney, and Dee Bradley Baker will be on an Avatar: the Last Airbender Q&A.

Jim Lee (originally scheduled for the 2020 show) has also been announced.

Post by: hikanteki on November 10, 2021, 02:00:27 PM
A couple comments about the schedule:

The main stage is in the Sheraton Hotel Grand Ballroom this year.

This would make an average local anime convention.

Way too many virtual panels that probably wouldn't even be interesting in person.

LOL at "Late Night Karaoke" starting at 5:15.

Whoa - Karaoke, 8 Bit Wave concert, Repo! Sing Along, and Rocky Horror Picture Show all at the same time on Friday night. But glad to see the 8 Bit Wave concerts on the schedule, as I've been requesting that they add back music alley.

No panels at the moment for Hayden Christensen or John Cena. Not sure if John Cena will have one since he's only there on Saturday and there's no space left on the main stage.

I can keep myself occupied for a hot minute on Friday night, most of Saturday and the first half of Sunday. But I'll likely be enjoying my hotel suite a lot more this year.

Except for a brief bit on the 40th anniversary panel at SWCO 2017, Hayden has never done a panel.  Even when he was supposed to be at Ace, where all guests do a panel, he wasn’t scheduled to do one — and then Covid killed the con anyway.  Cena didn’t do one at NYCC, I don’t think he did Supercon either.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like we aren't getting panels from either of them then. Disappointing that 2 of the 3 featured celebrity guests won't have panels. I do recall that at Salt Lake FanX in 2019 Hayden was supposed to have a panel with Ian McDiarmid but it ended up getting mysteriously pulled (even though they were both doing autographs.)

Yeah, at the time the suspicious was it was at Disney's doing, but when you see no panel there, no panel at Rhode Island Comic Con, no panel at SWCC in 2019, no panel at Ace, no panel at NYCC, there's definitely a trend there.  He's a super nice guy, but I think the panel/q&a thing gives him anxiety.

Karen Fukuhara and AJ Michalka just announced and they are doing a She-Ra panel. That takes the remaining Sunday Main Stage spot, so sadly, we will most likely not have a Tim Curry panel.

The spate of recent announcements helped bring this show to just about where it should be for this kind of year, IMO. Maybe they were waiting until the last minute in order to have a lower chance of cancellations. The only real problem (although it's a pretty glaring one) is that of the four featured celebrity guests, only one of the four has a panel (Levar Burton.) Two out of five if you count Jim Lee.

In fairness to them, elven though Tim Curry has done panels since his stroke, it’s obviously difficult for him (I saw him a few years ago at RICC).  So him not doing a panel is not a huge surprise.

Same here. He was also literally the only featured celebrity guest to have a panel. This is exactly why this small of a lineup is problematic...this show had one anchor panel, and they just lost it. I remember a similar issue with San Francisco Comic Con a few years back...they had three guests, and two of them canceled. They were able to replace those two at the last minute which was good, but it did change the mood of the show. That said, replacement is better than no replacement so ReedPop needs to leverage its resources and add another guest of similar caliber with a panel.

They don’t make money directly from panels, so that’s really not a big priority fir them.  They’d be much more concerned if Hayden canceled.

Panels are the main reason I go to any con, and ECCC has had panels for nearly all main guests in the past. Having a lean guest selection is one thing, but if I can no longer count on them to have panels for most of those guests then ECCC has lost the majority of its appeal to me.

A lot of con regulars aren’t ready to go back to cons, and A-listers have filming conflicts + studios that don’t want them attending cons.

Maybe so, but other conventions that have already happened this year run by organizations that are much smaller than ReedPop, with fewer resources and less pull, have had a significantly better lineup than ECCC at this point.

I think the studios are a big reason.  They've just gotten back into the swing of things.  Why would they want to risk another production stop?

Yeah.  A lot of people that you’re seeing, even on cons that are considered to have “better” guest lists, are mostly con circuit regulars.  Who also have the benefit of much lower appearance fees.

Filming here in NM has been really busy. I run errands and see the signs and try to figure out what is filming. When we figure it out we see if we’re going to watch it when it comes out. Studios expanding so expect more and more.

ECCC is over and it went about as expected. It was the weakest of the five conventions I’ve been to this year. There wasn’t a lot going on (especially panel-wise) but I did enjoy the few panels I saw…even though most of them weren’t much different then I can get from my local anime convention. What saved ECCC was a very good exhibit hall and artist’s alley. Funko stepped up their game (even though most of their exclusives had NYCC stickers) and the pre-party at Funko HQ was solid although not as wild as previous years. (I did win a Stranger Things Freddy Funko from Fundays 2018 though, so that was pretty cool!)

Not sure if this convention will be on my radar in the future. After this year it’s pretty clear that ReedPop considers it an afterthought. It being a pandemic year does not work as an excuse because all the other conventions I’ve been to this year had a much better lineup, even SiliCon. The thing that made it a dealbreaker is that ECCC had three featured celebrity guests, and zero of them had panels — can’t blame that on the pandemic…and I can’t get excited about any guests they announce for future years if I can’t trust the convention to have panels for them. 2020 was canceled so ReedPop should have pulled out all the stops they could this year, but they didn’t. NYCC had a better lineup (I realize NYCC is their star convention but there’s no reason ReedPop couldn’t have used their clout to send some of that lineup over to ECCC), and C2E2, which didn’t cancel 2020, even looks better than ECCC. In summary, other conventions have done better this year, both other ReedPop and non-ReedPop, and most of the others were cheaper. Good thing Seattle is cool and we were able to keep ourselves occupied outside the con.

I disagree. Yes, the entertainment lineup was light (very light). But there was a wide variety of panels available, and most of ECCC's usual strengths (writing/authors, cosplay, comics, gaming) were covered... gaming was the exception, although there was a large gaming presence. They also worked hard to provide a wide variety of fan panels and meetups. This was the only con I have attended this fall (including SiliCon and CCSE) where I actually had multiple panel choices at the same time, and had to make a hard decision as to which one I would attend.

I felt that the exhibit floor was a bit weak, with only Funko to really anchor it (no Dark Horse, no book publishers, etc.). But Artists' Alley was huge and well-attended.

We haven't done a lot of travel since COVID but this was a trip we were looking forward too.  We knew some places in Seattle had closed and that was sad too see.

COVID wristband was simple to get.  Not sure why they pushed CLEAR app but we had pics of ours and a quick ID check and done.  No line.

Thursday the floor was light but nice to walk around and talk to folks.  We did shopping Thursday and Friday and I think the lack of big publishers hurt but the floor was getting busier.

Saturday was our Tim Curry photo and everyone was so courteous and friendly but we have mixed feelings.  Happy to see Tim out with his fans but didn't like the quick moving through of everyone by the Photo folks.  Tim Curry was trying to talk to fans but it was a little difficult to hear him but by the time you knew what he said or asked they were moving you out for the next folks to get in.  We're so grateful he felt well enough to interact with Fans but he didn't look Happy all the time while the photo's were being taken.  We appreciated him coming and felt great to meet him kind of.  Other than that the lineup was light but knew this wasn't the regular time for ECCC and it was up against LACC.

Not sure if we'll go in August 2022 with SDCC the month prior but we'll see.

I thought the exhibit hall was good because I noticed a fair amount more exhibitor exclusives this year. Aside from Funko…Cryptozoic, Vltd, Plastic Empire and Tokidoki also had legitimate ECCC exclusives.

I haven’t enjoyed very many of ECCC’s smaller panels (other than the guest panels that are in smaller rooms) in the past so I just couldn’t find too many to get excited over this year. Fan panels and meetups are not on my radar at all.

I’ve seen some other posts about LA Comic Con being the same weekend. Perhaps more guests wanted to do a convention closer to home/studios, but I’ve never known LA Comic Con to have that much pull. Though I have to say their lineup this year looked pretty good. I may have to keep on eye on that one in the future.

Here is a recent example of how ReedPop treats ECCC as an afterthought: C2E2, their Chicago convention (which is a bit smaller than ECCC but homegrown rather than acquired) usually has a lot of overlap with ECCC in programming. Their biggest guest with a panel was Ming-Na Wen. She unfortunately cancelled about a week before the show, but ReedPop almost immediately replaced her with Giancarlo Esposito. There is no reason they couldn’t have done something similar for ECCC when LeVar Burton canceled.

Part of it may be due to other TNG actors not doing cons currently.  Obviously Spiner is, but Marina moved back to the UK and I heard Gates isn’t doing cons again until the pandemic is over.  Patrick Stewart has done a fan con in years.  So that severely limits replacement options.

Then they could have gotten guests from another Star Trek series, or another kids’ show along the same lines as Reading Rainbow, or a game show like Jeopardy. There are probably excuses that made sense as to why they couldn’t get a replacement, but they still could have cut through all that and made a replacement happen if they really cared.

Speaking of Sir Patrick Stewart, I remember when ECCC had him as a featured guest in 2013. Those were the days.

Well Levar Burton has canceled ECCC wife before.  Once was 2020 due to Covid before the whole con canceled, so don’t count that.  The other time I want to say was around 2015, and Marina Sirtis replaced him.  So I do think TNG for TNG is there thinking for replacement.  That said, also assume Levar Burton will cancel if he’s announced for ECCC. :-)
