Anyone ever been to Emerald City Comic Con?
« Reply #1 on: June 10, 2013, 10:29:29 AM »
A friend of mine is moving up to the Pacific Northwest later this year and the idea came up of us meeting at ECCC in 2014. I'd love a bit of an inside scoop, if anyone here has ever been. What are the ticket prices? How fast does it usually sell out? Are there VIP badges or just 'general admission' type badges? Do the discounted hotel rooms book up fast?

TIA for any information people can provide!

I've added this to my list for sure. It sounds like a great con. I know Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue normally go. I think Misha Collins was there this year too.

Looks like they've already started announcing a few guests. Tickets on sale in September.

Yes, I saw that. But it's not answering the questions I really have!

Except one! I was able to find an old link to VIP tickets. They do have them and they cost $250 for the 3 days, as compared to a $60 regular 3 days badge (2013 prices). They allow guaranteed 'premium' seating in the main panel room and front of the line access to all signings. It looks like they only have 100 VIP passes available.

The other big question is WonderCon. This year WonderCon was the last weekend in March. If they conflict, I'm going to WonderCon, but I'm hoping they don't conflict.

I've heard nothing but good things about Emerald City Comic-Con. Now that my bro lives up north I am definitely going to hit it up every year.

Yes, I've heard good things too: that it's fast becoming a great 'alternative to SDCC Con', where people who can't get SDCC badges will hang out and bring that SDCC 'vibe'. I've also heard that it is an excellent con for cosplayers. I'm very interested in going if it doesn't conflict with WonderCon next year.

This is a fast growing con.  It is the same size as what SDCC was in 2001.  The wiki page is pretty good.

Yeah, I went in 2012 and 2013.  It's hard to say what "usually" happens because--as is the case with most comic conventions across the country--popularity is increasing, and things booked much faster this year than last year.  2014 will be crazier.

2012: $45 weekend.  Saturday sold out day of show, but Friday/Sunday available at the door.  Estimated 53,000 attendees.  (I didn't go in 2011, but to put things in perspective...2011 had 32,000 attendees.)

2013: $65 weekend.  Saturday sold out weeks ahead, Sunday sold out a couple days before the show.  Friday still available at the door.  Estimated 64,000 attendees (with the entire convention center being used and Sat. and Sun. full, I don't expect the attendance to get much higher and I can't think of any venue in Washington state where it will fit better.)

IIRC both years hotels were available until the normal cut off date, but there were more still available at the end in 2012.  Most are around $100-$133, +tax.  Both year they also had a "budget" hotel for $60-something, which was a nice, credible hotel but had something going against it--i.e. a bit further away, construction, no-name brand.  In 2013 the budget hotel was the Best Western Seattle Center, which was 1 mile away from the convention center whereas all the rest of them were a couple of blocks or less.  It's kind of silly that being 1 mile away made something that much cheaper, as it certainly wouldn't for SDCC!  It sold out VERY quickly in 2013, but in 2012 it lasted months.

The atmosphere in Seattle was also MUCH more Comic Con oriented in 2013.  People were walking all around town in costumes, like SDCC (in 2012 it was fairly limited to the immediate convention center vicinity), and many of the shops, galleries, theaters, and bars in Seattle had special events in conjunction with ECCC.  At many places locals and customer service people also asked if we were in town for Comic Con, even though we weren't in costume.

I had a blast both years.  Seattle is pretty laid back and very geeky, even more so than San Diego...perfect for a comic convention.  It's replaced WonderCon as my big spring convention.

Has anyone been to this con?  It looks fantastic and to be an actual comic book convention.  What are your thoughts?

Same, I'm applying for a press badge at this very moment. I don't think I can let another year go by without attending this con. Hopefully we can get some sort of room-share set up with FOOCI'ers.

I would love to go to this Con. I've heard a lot of great things about it as well. I think I'll wait to hear the announcement about next years Wondercon before deciding if I'll try and attend though. I've heard mixed thing about Wondercon, but if they keep it in SoCal (easy driving distance for me) and assuming it stays in March again which is when Enerald is, it's the cheaper alternative then going up to Washington. I'd love to go to both though!

On that note, do any fellow SoCal residents have any tips for cheap and easy travel to head north? Keep in mind, I HATE driving lol. I avoiding driving more then a three hour distance if I can. I've never been farther north then Magic Mountain LOL
Hard work never killed anybody... but why take a chance?

So my post for Emerald Con 2014 is now in the Emerald Con 2013 thread?!  I thought all the old posts were archived.  I know you guys are working hard but this will cause confusion.
