Housing: November 2021 Mini SDCC
« on: March 02, 2021, 01:17:32 PM »
I know the dates the still speculative, but I went ahead and booked the Hard Rock for November 18-22 for $250/night for a queen suite. Looking at the price of other hotels in the area for those dates, that’s a pretty good deal!

If you want to have all your bases covered, I suppose one can book refundable hotels for every weekend in November and cancel the rest once the dates officially come out.

With DesignerCon the weekend of the 14th, it's looking as tho it's either this weekend or thanksgiving weekend.
If CCI did do it on thanksgiving, folks from out of town would be competing with everyone else for seats on airplanes.

Well, Thanksgiving technically is the only completely open weekend in November on the calendar...and given the circumstances, I don't think too many people would blame them if they scheduled it for then, especially if it's F-S-S (not Thanksgiving Day).

It seems like the hotels are assuming the 26-28 is the likely  date. the difference in hotel prices between this weekend and the weekend of the 18th is staggering (but right in line with standard SDCC price hikes). Omni on orbitz seems to have reasonable prices for that weekend of the 26th, BUT, it requires booking a longer stay of 6+ days.  You can reserve and pay later, with free cancellation.

Good catch. Hotel prices aren't normally that high on Thanksgiving weekend (I checked a couple other cities and they aren't high) so it's very possible something big is going on in DT San Diego.

I just went and looked at check in on the 25th (thursday) check out the 29th (monday) for hard rock-unavailable, bayfront-unavailable, hilton gaslamp-$800+/night. I didn't mess around with the dates or other hotels yet but just based on that alone...the hotels for sure think something big is happening those days.

After thinking it over, I cancelled my booking because if it's a smaller con, I can just drive there for the day.

good point

well, it seems prudent to prep the family to NOT expect me back east for thanksgiving

That's my plan.  For comic-con I take the trolley but I think this will be a small con and thus their won't be so much parking pressure.  I've been to mid size conferences at the convention center before and I didn't even have to pay for parking.  There's a place that almost always has parking on the street really close to the convention center.  It's just take many people are afraid to park there.  I've never had a problem.

I'll have to remember to get gas.  In the last year I've only gotten a half tank of gas 3 times.

I booked Hotel Z (Staypineapple) for Thanksgiving weekend. Rooms are kind of small, but nice looking and under $150/night including taxes and fees.

It looks like the closest hotels are $600-800 when booking directly or have no rooms available (perhaps being saved for the block) but some of the hotels a few blocks away are still regular priced. Little Italy/Airport/Mission Valley are cheap. This pricing spread seems in line with a mid-sized CCI event.

Also, if Thanksgiving ends up being correct, then that makes it the week before ECCC in Seattle. I'm anticipating directly flying from SAN>SEA.

I just checked the Marriott Marquis Marina for that weekend.

No rooms available.   :)

I can get on a plane right after Thanksgiving Dinner.    :)
