Register or LoginI have not been paying close attention to the announcements and press releases but what I did notice on the latest one is that it specified the non-profit name is "San Diego Comic Convention". I had believed they have changed to "Comic Con International" years ago and the email came from CCI. Is this new or has it always been?

According to public records "San Diego Comic Convention" has been a tax-exempt legal entity since 1977. FWIW, that was the name I first discovered in the public record when I did a simple search to see if they applied for/received any PPP small business loans (they did). I presume this has been their legal name for its non-profit business lifetime, and they have just branded and re-branded public names over the years. I'm told from a business banking executive (my mom :P ) that this is very common: business owner/operators may change public names in order to go with trends and re-brands, while still maintaining consistent legal entity name in perpetuity. Apparently, it's fairly complicated to create a business from scratch, and once it's established legally most owners don't want to do that again.
FWIW, I do have _some_ minor experience in this non-profit entity world. I worked for a non-profit educational music group that originated form an entirely different educational music group; rather than starting one from whole cloth/scratch (which is a not-small expense), the Director "piggybacked" onto the other group for tax/business purposes. For all intents and purposes they were two different organizations with two very different names, business models and goals, etc. They were broadly music education performance groups though, so it made sense to make it an off-shoot of the already-established organization.

Thank you for the information. I was wondering as they (SDCC) have been very deliberate on being Comic Con International for quite awhile now. But as they are laying down roots, that is a museum, then maybe it will go back to SDCC.

MISSION STATEMENT
The SAN DIEGO COMIC CONVENTION (Comic-Con International) is a California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation organized for charitable purposes and dedicated to creating the general public’s awareness of and appreciation for comics and related popular art forms, including participation in and support of public presentations, conventions, exhibits, museums and other public outreach activities which celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture.
From the beginning, the founders of the show set out to include not only the comic books they loved, but also other aspects of the popular arts that they enjoyed and felt deserved wider recognition, including films and science fiction/fantasy literature. After one more name change (San Diego’s West Coast Comic Convention, in 1972), the show officially became the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) in 1973 with the fourth annual event. In 1995, the non-profit event changed its name to Comic-Con International: San Diego (CCI).
