I totally agree. In fact, when the episode started I figured that without God intervening, they were no longer “invincible”. I think Dean dying was expected. I just didn’t see any other way for Sam to have any resemblance of a normal life.
This ending is probably the best I’ve ever seen to a series. It respected the entire arc, respected the characters, gave fanfare and they found a way to give us a true end to their story instead of a “we’ll let the audience decide” scenario.
I loved the “LOST spin” on the afterlife and that they took it a step further by showing the audience just what kind of life Sam had. That Dean didn’t end up waiting long at all since time moves differently and they were both happy and content in the end.
I’d probably rank this as top endings to a series, followed by LOST, Buffy, and then Angel.
