I don't think we have a thread on this yet. But here are two places to go to find shows in your area:
http://www.conventionscene.com/
http://www.comicshoplocator.com/Home/1/1/57/605?articleID=133186
Local shows are great for a lot of things:
--SDCC withdrawal
--Treating yourself to a comic con more than once a year
--Comic book prices are usually cheaper
--Not ticket/parking/housing/travel stress
--Meeting artists when they have time to talk/sketch
--No or less crowds
--Checking out the smaller things that you meant to check out at SDCC, but didn't
--In case you can't get a SDCC ticket
--A million other reasons, but there is a character limit here... :)
A lot of these little shows are enjoying very fast growth due to the attention that SDCC is getting and a lot are worth checking out.
Support your local comic con! :)
Also, after you go to your local show, please post your reviews here so others can benefit from your experience.

What a great thread! In most cases, local shows are sooooo much cheaper as well!

Correct, cheaper admission, parking, etc and also cheaper with vendor’s wares.
If a booth only costs a vendor $100 for the day/weekend at a small show vs the $2,000 (wild estimate) at SDCC, goods are usually already priced lower and the vendors are more willing to haggle. :)

Some of my best Con memories have been at smaller Cons. The entire atmosphere is more intimate in a way and you get to relax and enjoy the company of your fellow attendees a little better IMO. And because they have a smaller attendance, they can have certain events and activities that larger Cons just can't do. Human Chess? Did this at a Con a few years ago back East. It was soooo much fun! Try having an event like that at SDCC lol

My comic shop has a great con. Real casual, but great for haggling/admiring/reading new stuff. And it's on an hour from my house!!
This year I collected all the free swag no one wanted and am giving it to them to distribute to folks.

I didn't see it listed on here but Heroes Con is a awesome show to go to. I can't recommend it enough. I've been the last 5 years and it keeps getting better. Great guests, great atmosphere, family friendly. The only thing that some ppl may not like is that its pretty much exclusively comics. No TV or movie stars,no video game demo, toy introductions. I can't recommend it enough :)

I found a Heroes Con program at SDCC a couple of years ago. Couldn't find the cover, but this banner shows the artwork. Campbell nailed the Scarlett/Widow head tilt. :)

Yeah thats from 2010. Liefield,J.scott campbell,Jim Starlin,Mark Waid were there. The wrestler Mick Foley was there too promoting a comic he had out by a company.

As you hear about local cons in your area, please post ahead of time so that other people can check them out if they want to.
Also, please post any reviews that you have from shows you have attended. Feel free to fanboy/fangirl out about the positive aspects of the shows and be constructive with negative criticism of them.

Shame this thread has remained dormant. Let's pull it and see where it leads!
Had a blast at Hickory Con yesterday! It's a small con in Hickory, NC. Had a great test run for our Rorschach and Black Knightrider costumes! If you are in the Piedmont of North Carolina, I definitely recommend it. Next one is in September.
Also, if you're in the area (suicidally depressed because you're not in San Diego), the 1st Annual 'Be a Hero' Comic Con in Lincolnton, NC is on July 22nd ;)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170604/d6442575c564b891afd458164b2b13a0.jpg)

Wizard World Comic Con in Philly was pretty cool. I just came back from the Sunday Session. There were some big name stars were in attendance such as Michael Rooker, Jesse Eisenberg, & Sean Gunn. Wizard World was a nice little warm up for me before SDCC 17. Just as SDCC first started, from watching a news special it was a small convention and grew to what it is now. the same can happen for any con if run right and all. so checking around i may try go to more if close by and all.

So true! I was determined to bring home the big posters we got (the audible X-Files poster is beautiful) that I packed my smaller bag in my carry on suitcase (I thought it might burst) and carried on the poster tube as my personal item. It worked out though (because my smaller bag was packed light!).
