I believe that the most you can book into one room is 4 people through the onPeak hotel sale.

I believe there are some hotels (Embassy Suites comes to mind) that can house 6 people. But yeah, for the vast majority of hotels, you'll need 2 rooms.

Yes. Each hotel has its own policies, and some hotels look the other way on room occupancy during Comic-Con, but not all. I've never tried it, so I have no personal experience, but the hotel can ask the extra people to leave, kick you all out and cancel your reservation, or in an extreme case call the police (the statute is "defrauding an innkeeper").

I know lots of people have successfully "crammed" rooms with no consequences, but it's always at your own risk.

I'd imagine there going to be so busy during the week of CC that as long as you don't cause any hassle / draw attention to yourself they prob won't even know. I mean they'll have no rooms let to hire out anyway so not like they're losing income and they will potentially make more from food/drink with the extra people there so in my mind I don't see any reason they'd have a problem with throwing a blind eye to it once people are well behaved and quite* :)

Looking up the hotel sale from last year.  The only one that listed prices for more than 4 people was Springhill Suites San Diego Downtown/Bayfront.
  • Suite 2 Queen Beds+Sofa Sleeper -Single Occupancy @$279
  • Suite 2 Queen Beds+Sofa Sleeper -Double Occupancy @$279
  • Suite 2 Queen Beds+Sofa Sleeper -Triple Occupancy @$299
  • Suite 2 Queen Beds+Sofa Sleeper -Quad Occupancy @$319
  • Suite 2 Queen Beds+Sofa Sleeper -Five People @$339
  • Suite 2 Queen Beds+Sofa Sleeper -6 People @$359

But, I think the most you could request on the initial form is a Quad (4 people / 2 beds).

We've stayed at Embassy and Hard Rock with way more than intended, and a friend has stayed at Omni with like 7.

I'm actually not completely sure we were even breaking the rules since we didn't exceed capacity on any given night due to people sleeping in lines.  I know they did at the Omni, and we did have like 8 copies of the key at Hard Rock.  Nobody cared at all and I have no idea how they would even have checked or verified that.  At Embassy, they did put wrist bands on the exact number of people legally in the room, and only those people could get breakfast from the buffet, but one of our friends even went to the desk and asked for one (he's kind of dumb) and was told that he would have to be officially added to the room to get one.  That fact that he was obviously staying in the room was of zero concern to the front desk people.

I can also say, from doing cross country road trips with 5 kids, and attending other cons in college, that I think way more people do this than you'd think and I cannot imagine a problem unless there was a noise issue.   If hotels were actively enforcing the rule during comic con and kicking people onto the streets, we'd have heard about it.  I suspect it doesn't happen at all.

We always request a room for myself and my husband. Some years it's just been the 2 of us. One year, it was myself, my husband, and my 9 year old. Last year, it was myself, my husband, my then-10-year-old, and one of my friends. This year it'll be my husband and I and both kids, and maybe a friend or 2. I think, like everyone is saying, as long as you are polite and don't make a spectacle of yourselves, they're pretty laid back about it.

Also, when extra beds are needed, we've found these have a been a great investment for when we travel. Very comfortable for even tall/large people, and easy to pack in a suitcase or backpack: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Back in my, travel on a budget days, we would just pack people into the room. If you book a quad, 6 is manageable. If you don't want to ask for more keys than allotted, then you can just partner people up and make them share keys. That has worked for me.

A couple years ago, we had a 5th person in our room at Hilton Bayfront, who slept on a twin size air mattress. We made no attempt to hide it, and they didn't say anything to us about it. However, when we checked out, there was a "transient occupant" fee of about $34/night added to our bill.

I think if you have any obvious markers of exceeded capacity in your room, that it's a good idea to waive housecleaning services.  You can put bagged trash/used towels outside your door to be picked up, and get extra towels and toiletries from the front desk as needed.

I've seen more than four people cram into rooms in the past but never heard of them being kicked out but they tried to be low key. It's hard to keep track probably with so many con people. Don't they sometimes count kids differently? I've stayed in OC hotels where kids weren't counted as guests. The tot tax is a citywide thing.

The residence inn has suites for up to six guests. There's one in Gaslamp
