So you can find true love at Comic Con...kinda....=)

Hey, anything is possible at SDCC! Doubt I’ll ever get that lucky again. But what better place for nerds like us to meet a fellow nerd to bond with than there?

I was there for this too!  Best part was I was last in line and Eliza had gone to the restroom so security let me hang for a moment til she got back. I chatted with the other stars from the show and when Eliza came back, I impulsively asked them all to sign my Cubs jersey.  They were all super cool!

I think I have to go all the way to my first(and only for a few years) back in like 2003 when it was still easier to get in........

LUCKY:    Went on a whim because Eliza Dushku was going to be there for Tru Calling(man the memories) and I was hoping to meet and get a pic and autograph because she was a huge crush of mine. While in the panel room waiting for the chance to go to sails and try and get an autograph....naive I was of how easy that would be(yes I never got it)  I got to sit through a panel for some guy named Quentin promoting Kill Bill!!! Nice little treat. It’s not sexy but luckiest thing for me so far as everything else that’s been really great I usually was able to accomplish with patience and planning.

UNLUCKY:  locking eyes with Jessica Chobot one Preview Night and her not getting love at first sight lol. Oh and lotteries. Any of them.

Ok, here's my lucky tale. I'm a fan of the 80's horror film Night of the Creeps. The Director, Fred Dekker, was on hand at a small-ish Sony booth signing an exclusive DVD cover (this was a few weeks before it was to be released on DVD for the first time). At the booth was an 8x10 piece of paper taped up that said "ask about Boondock Saints focus group'....so I asked. They were looking for people to sit in on a discussion of likes and dislikes of the film as well as getting our opinion on concept artwork and the trailer for the upcoming sequel.  As a thank you for our time, participants would be invited to a private meet and greet with the cast at The Tilted Kilt (R.I.P.  I miss that place) where they'd be signing posters and taking pictures. The only downside was that there was no way we could do the focus group and make it back to the panel for Boondock 2 in time. BUT....private meet and greet. My fiancée and I went to the focus group and that night got to meet the cast. The best part was after it was all over, we were hanging out in the bar area wondering where one friend had wandered off to. Then my phone rang. Our missing friend April was having beers with David Della Rocco and to get our asses over here now! We raced over and for the next 90 minutes we hung out like old friends. We all got pretty toasty. As the night ended and Rocco was leaving, he said, 'from now on, whenever you toast, you toast to Rocco first.'  We still do that to this day.

And all because I'm a huge fan of Night of the Creeps!

Lucky: Meeting Stan Lee at my very first SDCC, after going through the "pick-a-ticket" autograph line 3x that day

Unlucky: Grabbing a Hall H wristband and then oversleeping past the cutoff time which put me at the back of the whole line :(

Lucky: getting the Marriott 2x in a row, running into Meredith from the Office, I met the Creators of the Venture Borothers, the Archer Panel cast reading on the Boat!, Hall H first time (seeing that awesome trailer to the suicide squad movie), Syfy Party with my wife was Awesome!
Met the Super Natural Cast in the elevator (not knowing it was them), seeing Matt Groening,
Eli Roth at the Nerdist Carnival! So bad ass!

Unlucky: No autograph sessions, not getting into Hall H, being that weird fan when I Met the Creators of the Venture Brothers, last years Nerd HQ party.

Here’s mine:

LUCKY: We were at the Star Wars panel where we got to go to the secret concert and while we were being escorted by the storm troopers, we were outside of Hall H stopped in foot traffic when the cast drove by us and they all stopped and talked to us from their cars. I have video of Mark Hamill coming to a stop next to me and rolling his window down and asking if we were all having a good time, and Daisy Ridley high fived me from her car.

UNLUCKY: I flew the day of the Great Southwest Computer Crash in 2016 that cancelled every flight to San Diego. I spent the ENTIRE DAY getting from SF to SD. We had to pay $260 each on another airline that had a transfer in PHOENIX. It would have cost us even more money but I had overheard a Southwest employee say they were cancelling the flights before it was officially announced so I had gone online and bought those other flights just to make sure we could get there (the price doubled after I had completed check out). We were originally supposed to fly at 130. We got in at 11pm.

Lucky:  One year while getting a Legend of Korra signiture at Dark Horse, I got an invite to a party.  I had arrived late to the signing, but since I had a wristband, I was guaranteed a signing.  So I came when the line was not very long.  It was coming close to my turn when a worker came by and asked "Does anyone want to go to the Korra Video Game party?"  None of us in the line, knew anything about this, so no one responded right away.  Finally I raised my hand and said sure, and I got a special lanyard and card attached to it that gave me entry to a Live Demo of the Korra Video game they were going to premier later that day.  It was at the former site of Stingaree (not sure what it is called now, but I recall it closed right after that year) which was a prominent club.  And huge too!  A whole club had been rented out for the late afternoon.  There was tons of free food and free bar drinks and the event lasted hours.  For the drinks, they had one for each of the elements, four total.  So of course I took full advantage and became the Avatar of drinking by mastering the four drink elements.  So I got pretty hammered.  Plus, the creators and voice cast was there to mingle with folks.  I got a photo with the voice actress who did Toph, who was my favorite character.  That was a lot of fun and all because I happened to arrive late for a signing.

Unlucky: Last year, I wanted to get the autograph of Kohei Horikoshi, creator of My Hero Academia.  He was a high anticipated guest, so I teamed up with some folks from here and we coordinated waiting in line for the next day so we could hit the Viz booth that was giving out tickets.  Thanks to the group, we were front in line and among the first to enter the hall.  Unfortunately, all that waiting and planning was for naught.  Viz, in their infinite wisdom, said they would give out tickets at a designated time, 9:30am.  We were let in the exhibit hall at around 9:10 or 9:15.  So while most of our group got to the booth quickly, they weren't lining up or handing out tickets.  They said, "Come back later," which as you know, never works.  So while we were probably the first 50 or so people and would have received tickets had they just handed them out normally, we had to wait and circle.  And wait and wait.  By the time 9:30 came along, there were hundreds and hundreds of folks just swarming the booth.  Then, at 9:30, they said, "Raise your hands if you want tickets!" which c'mon now.  So it was madness as they haphazardly just grabbed random people yelling and waving their hands up and down and then finally the fire marshal bulldozed his way to the booth and threatened to shut the booth down.  They told everyone to disburse and that was that.  I don't recall anyone from our group getting the signatures that day.  Everything we did right (lined up early, got to be among the first to get to the booth) but we had nothing to show for it.

We debated doing that! But we worried about being unable to get a rental car and the traffic. I still have anxiety over that experience. I will never book afternoon flights for SDCC again because of that.

Most Lucky and Unlucky thing that happen to you at Comic Con?

Lucky: I’ve had an amazing amount of luck meeting celebrities, but my favorite was Sir Ian McKellen. He came out to us Hall H line campers late at night with a phalanx of body guards. It was impossible to get near him. He was being mobbed by fans yelling “Gandalf!” But, as he was heading back into the building, his entourage passed close enough, and I called out, “Sir Ian! I want to talk about Shakespeare!” He heard me and stopped. He turned around and came back to where I was and we did have a nice conversation about a speech I heard him do from “the Scottish play.”

Unlucky: Zero, zilch, nada, nil. I feel like I’ve been one of the luckiest SOB’s on the planet when it comes to Comic-Con. It’s been off the charts phenomenal, including the Star Wars panel and concert.

PS: I hated that beard, but I cosplayed as Dale for the zombie run that year.
