Title: Wondercon 2013 Registration
Post by: Chris on December 12, 2012, 01:17:02 PM
From the new CCI webpage:

http://www.comic-con.org/wca/2013/member-id

"Anyone who wishes to purchase, apply, or register for a WonderCon Anaheim badge must sign up for a Comic-Con Member ID."

"Everyone with a Member ID will be notified via email when WonderCon Anaheim badges go on sale.  We suggest that you log in to your Member ID account and make sure you have not selected to opt-out of email communications from Comic-Con International. You will not be notified of WonderCon Anaheim badge sales if you have selected this opt-out."

Also, on their front page, it states: Badges go on sale January 2013!

So, just to be sure, is it the same Member ID as for Comic Con International?

They said this last year too. You had to use your CCI Member ID to buy a WonderCon badge.

I believe that they were a bit more lax with it last year since the member ID system was closed for a while in January(?).  My guess is that they will be more stringent with member ID's only registration this year.

My memory could be wrong though.

Didn't they have them available at the door in 2012?
Are they expecting it to sell out?

Usually available at the door - never know for sure though so if you plan to go, you should just buy. From prior experience though, badges are available at the door for a few dollars more.

Also, at the door may get a bit hairy. If you need to have a member ID to get a badge, they'll have to try verifying your member ID, and signing up people who don't have a member ID. Better to buy in advance.

Yeah wasn't required last year - optional. I don't think the badges even had our names printed on them.

Does anyone know if you are automatically qualified to cover WonderCon if you are cleared for SDCC (as press)? I was approved last year for a press badge to SDCC and my press materials are not due this year. I covered last WonderCon as a civilian so I have articles about the con but no previous press badge for the event.

Basically, what I am asking is: am I pre-approved?

have you emailed CCI with this question yet? I assume so

Title: Re: Wondercon 2013 Registration
Post by: Transmute Jun on December 23, 2012, 03:16:39 PM
Briarbun, I don't know if it automatically carries over or not, but I have a friend who is a pro. He qualified for SDCC, and then called them up and they arranged it over the phone that he also qualified as a pro for WonderCon. So I agree with Alyssa: contact CCI and ask them if the qualification can carry over.

I"m not sure how much the posting on facebook will help- they tend to read it but i'm not so sure on how much they can act on a posting.  As a matter of fact, i don't even see your posting on their fb page.

If you haven't gotten a reply in a few business days, give the phone number a call- they do answer it if they're not busy. In other words the phone might not get answered the first few times you try to call. obviously xmas will throw a wrench into the schedule.

PS, post what they say & the process you have go threw, please

I will definitely let everyone know the outcome once I get the official word. Btw, do you happen to know the phone number to call? I couldn't find one.

As for the process, I actually sent out two emails, one through the website contact form (found at: http://www.comic-con.org/contact (http://www.comic-con.org/contact)) and the other being the press registration address (pressreg[at]comic-con[dot]com). I also went through the CCI member ID site and filled out a contact form with the drop-down message of "I have a question about press registration."

I don't think i have it, it might be in an old post on fb....i'll see if i can dig it up when i am feeling better

That is so weird. I literally just emailed CCI that EXACT question. I too covered WC as a guest and was approved for SDCC badge, and wanted to know if it carried over for press as WC. It's crazy.

Orbitz is having a hotel sale right now. If you book any hotel (stays through early April) you can get 15% off the published rate. Book by January 5 using code HAPPYNEWYEAR .

I juts got 15% off my Disney hotel, so I'm happy!  ;D

Just noticed that CCI updated the info for WC badges. It shows the prices for badges (pretty much same as last year). This section is from the link:

You can save money by purchasing your badges online! When WonderCon Anaheim badge registration opens, you will be sent a link to our registration partner, Interactive Ticketing. Please check the prices below for discounts on advance registration.

Is the part about "Interactive Ticketing" new for this year? Either way it looks like they are getting ready for sales this month. Happy New Year!

Guessing it'd be difficult to switch systems w/o screwing over all the peeps who already have badges. Maybe something to keep an eye on for next year if Interactive is a success...
Title: Re: Wondercon 2013 Registration

This may also be a test run for 'interactive ticketing' to see how they handle things. Epic could certainly use some competition! That would give CCI more leverage as well.

Getting excited for WonderCon!  ;D
Title: Re: Wondercon 2013 Registration

Yes I still think they will use Epic for the cci badges. I remember seeing the blurb in the email re. press passes that " You will be notified via email when EPIC Online Press Registration opens in early 2013."  Agree they might be testing out Interactive. I don't know if they will ever be able to handle the huge crush of people all trying to buy CCI tix at the same time. WonderCon ticket process is way less stressful!

CCI refers to EPIC on the FAQ page on the sdcc pages....

Wow...Hope I get notification for Wondercon this year...Last year was the first year I went, and it was interesting. Nowhere near as good/exciting as CCI, but it was reminiscent of the mid/late 90's Comic-Cons that I attended.

This year, my wife is saying she wants to go, at least for 1 day; she might go and hang out at Downtown Disney or Garden Walk instead of staying the full time at Wondercon. Only thing that worries me is if I will have a problem getting her a badge...She has a Member ID, and I got her a CCI pre-reg badge for 2013; I just hope that it's not a problem to get badges.

there shouldn't be a problem getting her a badge.  iirc, cci sold badges at the door last year.

I keep trying to get my husband to come to a comic con for a day....after years of trying it's still a 'no go'

Last year was my first trip to WC, and I had a blast. It was a nice warm up for the big show. It is awesome to have another CCI event in my backyard.

The poster who is trying to get his wife to go to WC.....do it. My wife missed out on WC last year due to family issues, but for the past five years she's gone to SDCC with me and has a great time. Yes she's a nerd too! Trust me if your wife goes she will have a great time.

And finally to the poster whom wants to bring her husband to a con, have you told him about all the cosplay women?

No date yet but considering they plan to sell badges at the door, you probably have nothing to worry about with badges selling out though it is nice to have the purchase complete and the barcode email in your inbox.

Sprzout, it shouldn't be a problem to get your wife a badge. Why not surprise her and get her a 3 day badge? It's not that much more and she might like it well enough to want to return. Also, since we don't know the programming schedule in advance, you want to make sure you bring her on a day when there is a panel she might enjoy.

Alyssa, everyone has different interests. I am lucky that my husband likes to attend Cons (when he can get time off work) but once at SDCC we're often in different places doing different things. We're both geeks, but our interests vary.

In the past there has never been a problem buying WonderCon tickets in advance of the show. I'm not expecting any such problems this year either. *knock on wood*
Title: Re: Wondercon 2013 Registration

I hope badges will be easy to get, but i think with the move so close to Hollywood I've got a bad feeling anout this. I hope WC won't loose the small con feel and turn into a 2 1/2 day version of SDCC. Plus all the new hype with SDCC has been getting a lot of people will be looking at WC as an easier, easy with badge purchase, big con. Don't get me wrong I would love to have two awesome cons, but I don't think my wallet could handle it. For those with wives, husbands, partners, or whatever that's on the fence about going, drag them to one. WC is right next to Disneyland, downtown Disney and Disney California adventure. Plus there's a lot of other cool things to go to in Orange County (fashion island, south coast plaza, Laguna beach, Newport beach, and a short drive to L.A). And at SDCC there are so many cool things to do outside the con. The gaslamp, pretty much all of San Diego, takes part in SDCC week. Bring the whole family. For the past couple years, SDCC is our family vacation.

My wife has gone to CCI with me for the past 5 years, but she's been kinda turned off with the crowds the past 2 years.

I'd like to try to get her to go to Wondercon this year, as I went last year and it was pretty good (except for the rain - I got DRENCHED on the short walk from the Disneyland parking to the Convention Center).

There were only a few panels I really wanted to see at WC, and one of them, there were only about 10 people in it (the Spotlight on Ernest Cline was rather nice and intimate)...But I dunno that I'd go all 3 days unless there were some AWESOME things going on during the show this year.

Cost for 2 days (Friday and Saturday - $20 each) is the same as 3 day badge ($40).

Yeah, I'd buy the 3 day badge, just in case, but I don't know if I'd pop in for Sunday or not. I might just chill at Downtown Disney or something instead.

It's always nice to have the option of going every day to a con. If you go to downtown Disney on a Sunday I recommend the Sunday brunch at the house of blues. It's around $20 per person, but the food is pretty good for a brunch. And you need to try the Bingets (I have no clue on how to spell it. Sorry) at the Jazz kitchen take out window. Be warned they are messy.

Yes bigger is better, but you have to eat all of them before they cool. The hardened grease soaked powder sugar is a pain to get off your clothing.

Got the email today from CCI that press registration was open for Wonder Con. I was approved for a Comic Con press badge for 2013 so I was able to just click on the link in the member area to request one a press pass for WC 2013.

The email states:

We are pleased to announce that press badge registration for WonderCon Anaheim 2013 is now open!  We invite you to be a part of one of the country’s best comics and popular arts conventions, taking place at the beautiful Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim CA during the weekend of March 29-31.

To request a press badge for WonderCon Anaheim 2013, simply log in to your Comic-Con Member ID account at https://secure2.comic-con.org/memberid/ and select the WonderCon Anaheim “Click to request your badge now” link. If you do not recall your Member ID and/or password, you may retrieve that information by visiting: https://secure2.comic-con.org/memberid/forgot_login.php

This email is NOT a confirmation of badge registration. You must log in to your Member ID account and complete the WonderCon Anaheim press badge request to register.

We encourage you to visit http://comic-con.org/wca for more information on our Exhibit Hall, programming, and special guests at WonderCon Anaheim 2013.

Good luck to any applying for a press pass for WC. Hopefuly they will open up the badge sales soon. (need to get a ticket for my son)

It's pretty easy for pro badges. At least for me, but I have the luck to be in the credits of several video games. So that makes it easier. I think for the press might be more challenging if you are an "independent"/blogger/... because there are many of those trying to request access.

Not official, but checking with a few friends and people's posts the CCI FB page, it appears that the Wondercon registration emails have not gone out.  So no need to panic.  In case I am wrong (which happens a lot), if anyone has received the email or has heard anything otherwise, please post here.  Thanks.

I emailed this morning:

QUESTION OR ISSUE:
I haven't received the Wonder-Con badge purchase link. I am not opted out of anything.

Thank you for your interest in WonderCon 2013. At this time an email with a link has not been sent out to purchase WonderCon badges. Badges will however go on sale sometime today and there will be an email that will eventually be sent out to all attendees with a Member ID and who are opted into receiving emails from Comic-Con. Please be sure to keep checking your email periodically through out the day.

Thank you
Samantha

Yes, but instead of Member ID + lastname, you need Member ID + email.  I'm wondering if this will be the case for SDCC as well?

Different ticket vendor.

In the note that SDCC posted last week, they said Member ID and last name. Hopefully that hasn't changed or it'll give everyone something else they can whine about.

It was pretty cool of CCI.  A guy took the time to specifically respond to my email from this morning saying that registration was open and sent me the link.  I am sure it was a cut and paste response, but it was still nice of them to respond right away and to individuals rather than rely on FB, Twitter, etc.   :)

Yes the process was very smooth for me to buy my son's badge for WC. It is a different system than the ones for SDCC. The email confirming registration was received super fast as well. Can't wait!! We're all set. I have a press pass and he has his 3 day pass.

Just a note- I received the email for the link to the WonderCon tickets but my son's email has not yet received his. So it looks like they are sending them out in waves.

MEMBER ID

Hopefully it's not so complicated that people will whine about it  :P

The advice from the post last week talked about working in teams and the information needed.

Say you were trying to help a friend get a badge and you're in and about to buy a badge and it asks for an email address instead of the last name you were told would be needed, you don't think that'll piss people off? With badges selling out in minutes, any change to the process will raise a huge stink.

The point though was just that WonderCon badges were sold by a different ticket agency and they asked for slightly different information.

Not whining, but this was a bit of a curve ball.

I was purchasing for my girlfriend, too, and all I had was her last name (I'd hope) and her member ID. I wasn't sure what e-mail she registered under, so I had to try several of her addresses (friend address, spam address #1, spam address #2, etc.) until I found the right one. I'm glad I was able to figure that out. Of course, if they'd said we'd need the e-mail address ahead of time, I would have gotten it from her before she left the house.

Otherwise, a fairly smooth process. This will be my first time at WonderCon, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Not hearing about any issues.  The sale must be going smoothly.  I wish they still had the little meters on their website that showed the number of badges left for each day.  It’d be interesting to see what % sold in the first hours/day.

Not that much. This whole mess with ticket buying only began for the 2011 Con. Before that you could pre-purchase a badge easily, and you had a month (or even multiple months) to buy online once they were made available.

That, plus a bunch of other mistakes made by CCI that led to a frenzy on ticket-buying day. The legacy of that is the current frenzy and rapid sellout rates that now exist.

Yep.  I remember years of pre-registering on site for like $20 or so, and then the price would get more expensive the closer you got to Comic-Con (before you could buy them online).  There were some years where I would look at those thermometer-looking things on the website and play they, "meh: I'll buy my badge next week"  :P

Even in 2010 I pre-registered on site on Thursday or Friday. Walked up to Sails Pavilion, no line, in and out at one of the terminals in the time it takes to scan your badge. I remember I got done and realized I forgot to pre-register my brother in-law for one of the days but instead of going back told myself I'll do it later in the week. No stress. No worries.

What happened to those days? It will turn into one of those ... "I remember when I was your age I walked through 20 miles of snow, in my bare feet to get to school" stories! :-\

In my opinion things changed after the ticket leap debacle and the darn sparkly vampires. I remember the ticket leap year, alot of nerds were mad. Servers kept going down. It seemed like registration took all day.

I did the pre-reg thing with ease in 2010 too.

Ticket Leap wasn't the only problem. There were a number of things that led up to the problem.

1)  Preview Night for 2011 sold out at the 2010 Con pre-sales. This meant that the people who had waited for online sales (either because they couldn't go in 2010 or because they hadn't bothered to pre-register) couldn't get Preview Night. This led to some concern, which led to rumors that the other badges would sell fast once the general sale happend.

2)  Instead of just quietly turning on the badge sales as they had done in precious years, CCI made huge announcements about the upcoming date of the badge sale, sending out emails, posting on social media and their website, and even sending out snail mail postcards. There was nearly a months' notice. So the people already upset because Preview Night was gone were now gearing up and getting ready.

3)  The Ticket Leap issues you mention, Yzrfan. The ticket-selling site crashed multiple times (on multiple dates) when CCI tried to sell badges.

All of this combined to create the fastest sellout ever when the 2011 badges finally went on general sale in February 2011. And that's what started all of this frenzy. It's been frenzied ever since, and made worse since there are now no more onsite pre-sales.

IMHO, it had nothing to do with Twilight, or any other property (although I'm willing to admit that the TwiHards camping in line for Hall H began the camping out trend).

I got my 3 day badge but not 100% going to attend but everyday I start to lean on going. Hopefully they'll release more programming and exclusives info and that will put me over the top.

Last year I only went on Friday & Saturday.  My son was pretty worn-out and really not happy about walking in the rain (we parked in the Disney parking garage and walked over to the convention center).  Honestly, I thought the panel schedule was pretty solid on Friday & Saturday, but not much interested me Sunday.  The exhibit hall floor can easily be seen seen in a few hours last year.

That being said, it was a lot of fun, and if the weather was nicer the 'vibe' would've been worth returning Sunday.  With the badge pricing, you pay for Friday & Saturday and essentially get Sunday free.

Yep, it's a '1 day free' price. We actually went on Sunday last year, because we wanted to see Starship Smackdown and something else that slips my mind.

I agree about the Exhibit hall being easy to see in a few hours. You don't need more than that.

Isn't the floor twice as big this year?

iirc last year WonderCon's exhibit floor was in Hall D which according to this floor plan is 221,000 SF.  WC 2013 exhibit hall is reported to be in Hall A and Hall B which combined is about 293,000 SF.  Still a significant increase in exhibit space but not double...

Although they didn't use all the space in the hall last year. There was an 'empty area' at one end.

Yeah, I think if you add in Artists Alley there was a bit of empty space in the Hall.  Will be curious to see if there are more vendors this year

Got a 3 day badge for Wondercon this past Fri, and bought one for my wife as well. :-)

I think this will be enjoyable for her; she's done Comic-Con, but has had issues with the crowded floor and not being able to see everything she wanted to. I think Wondercon will be a better experience for her, as it's not going to be as crowded...

I'm really looking forward to it - got my hotel room (staying at the Motel 6 a couple blocks away - can't justify staying at the Marriott for $110/night, PLUS having to pay $24/day for parking when I can spend $95/night, get free parking, and walk a couple blocks or even take OCTA down near the convention center for cheaper than that! Heck, I could even park at the Disney parking across the street from the convention center for cheaper than $24/day)

At any rate, I'm registered (and contemplating dressing as Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons - I just have to find a way to make a fake ponytail for the back of my short hair)...I'll try to look for those of you who are going.
