Comic-Con Volunteer Program

The Comic-Con 2020 volunteer program will open in the fall. Please check our social media sites regularly for important volunteer registration updates.

To register as a volunteer for Comic-Con, you must be on the Volunteer Priority List or the Volunteer Interest List. The Volunteer Priority List is comprised of returning volunteers who completed at least one volunteer assignment at Comic-Con the year prior.

If you are interested in volunteering for Comic-Con 2020, you will have the opportunity to sign up for the Volunteer Interest List shortly after Comic-Con 2019. If you are already on the Volunteer Priority List, you do not need to sign up for the Volunteer Interest List when it becomes available. The Interest List is limited and does not guarantee admission into the volunteer program. Please check this page regularly for updates on the Comic-Con 2020 volunteer program as they become available.

There will be another opportunity available for you to volunteer at WonderCon Anaheim 2020 (April 10 - 12, 2020)! Information regarding volunteer opportunities at WonderCon Anaheim 2020 will be available on the WonderCon Anaheim Volunteers page, and on our social media sites, in early 2020. Watch for it!

We thank ALL of our volunteers – past, present, and future – for their help and enthusiasm in making Comic-Con and WonderCon Anaheim great experiences for all!

Question: if I volunteered in 2019 (which I did), should there be an indication that I'm on the 2020 Volunteer Priority List under the Volunteer tab of my CCI account? I can't remember previous years but I thought it had been indicated under my Member ID registration info in the past.

The tab (and your checkmark for Priority) will update when CCI announces the opening of the 2020 Interest List (for first timers).

Last year the tab updated on Sept 20th.

Thanks Sam. I asked because this year's volunteer gig was a little weird. I was holding a sign directing folks to the blood drive but no 'supe ever came to relieve me after my shift was up. When I finally went back to the room after 30 minutes had passed, they were very nonchalant about it and said that I should have just left after my three hours was up (I felt really bad for leaving my post after 3-1/2 because it was busy!). And, no-one checked me off a list or anything. Contrast that with 2018 when my shift supervisor was present for a good part of my shift, relieved me promptly when I was done and also thanked me + made a point of telling me she was recommending me for next year because I'd done a good job.

So I was (maybe still am) a bit worried my shift didn't get recorded and/or get the supervisor's thumbs up for next year. Probably worried about nothing, but that's just how I am  ;)

A friend in our group volunteered 4 days last year and DID NOT get the Priority Registration status.  When we told him that we had signed up in the October Priority Registration period, that's when he noticed the omission in Member ID and that he got no registration email. After resigning himself for missing registration and thinking he had missed his chance to Volunteer, he finally contacted the Volunteer Department, weeks late,r and got reinstated for 2019, luckily.

Yes, it does happen, and once the Interest List begins, that's when to double check Member ID and get your Priority Checkmark!  I didn't volunteer last year, after having Priority the last few years, and am looking to re-up myself.

Thanks for that info, Sam! I will definitely be on the lookout later this month and verify that my Returning Volunteer status is correct. I do still have my Volunteer badge AND my t-shirt as proof.  ;)

That's not good.  Do you still have your C card then?  That's what a supe should take from you and sign to verify that you did your shift.  Did they at last take it when you went back to volunteer HQ?

It's not unheard of that people don't get their C cards turned in.  The fact that you got a t-shirt means that you are probably OK.  Since you should only be able to get a t-shirt after you've done at least one shift.  That is unless you are doing one of the last shifts, then they give you the t-shirt sticker when you check in.

So I pulled out my Volunteer badge from this year (yeah, I keep them - the ones from WonderCon, too!) and the only thing in the badge holder was the paper volunteer badge itself. Also the Volunteer On Duty sticker still stuck to the badge holder. I had no C-card or t-shirt sticker/card in there. To be extra certain, I also checked my regular badge holder and every pocket in my Con Survival bag. No C card.

Thinking back, I'm now *kind-of* remembering that after we were separated into two groups (those that would stay in the Premium room and those that would go hold signs outside) - I sort of remember being told to turn in our cards to the gal sitting by the lockers before we headed out to our stations. She did have a check list with our names on it so maybe she signed the cards right after we left. When I came back to the room after no one relieved me I didn't think about the C-card. I was more concerned about having to leave a busy post and said as much. Then I grabbed my t-shirt and went on with my day...

You should be good then.  The fact that you got a t-shirt means that you should be good.  Since they only hand out the t-shirt sticker once the computer says you've done a shift.  Unless it's as previously noted.

It really depends on the supe, some of them take c cards right away.  Others wait until the end of the shift.  All that matters is they have your c card and turn it in to volunteer HQ.  Regardless, someone should have come around and released you.  That's only polite.

Thanks. This was a 9am-noon shift, not later in the day, so it sounds like I’m good. In any case I’ll be double-checking my status once the interest list opens up. Thanks for your input!

That’s not totally true. I went to get the t-shirt sticker on Sunday after the con closed. I showed my volunteer badge at the entrance to the Volunteer room at MMM, and they just pasted my sticker on. They didn’t do any check.

So at least in my case, I can’t be 100% certain my shift got logged. But I am mostly certain since I did hand my C card to an official along with a bunch of other volunteers.

That's what I meant when I said "Unless it's as previously noted."  What I said before was "That is unless you are doing one of the last shifts, then they give you the t-shirt sticker when you check in."  If you are doing one of the last shifts, you can't go back to volunteer HQ because it'll be close by the time you finish your shift.  For the same reason, they gave you your sticker when you showed up that late.  Since by then, they had broken down the computers and there was no way they could check you.

I still wouldn't worry about it.  Like I said, c cards not being turned in is not unheard of.  I think they err on the side of trusting that you did finish your shift after checking in instead of assuming you ran off.  If people running off was a problem, the supes that take c cards at the beginning of a shift wouldn't do that.  Since nothing would keep you from running off.

Got my email, logged into my account and verified that I now have a green check mark and the “you are eligible for Returning Volunteer”  status under my Volunteer tab. Well that’s one less thing to stress about!   :)

Well, considering you didn't have to have volunteered last year to qualify as a "returning volunteer", priority volunteer was more accurate.  Right from that email.

"Returning volunteer registration is only for those who completed at least one assignment during Comic-Con 2019 or were pre-approved by the volunteer department."

Got my email too and verified I got my green checkmark (I'm the paranoid guy who won't believe I have something until I have proof staring in my face).

I have to say it again, having volunteer status makes Returning / Open Registration a lot less stressful (though I'd still very much like to have 4Day+PN).

Volunteers

Comic-Con 2020 returning volunteer registration is now open! Returning volunteer registration is only for those who completed at least one assignment during Comic-Con 2019 or were pre-approved by the volunteer department.

To avoid confusion regarding the "Priority List" and the "Interest List", we have made some changes for 2020!

Previously, volunteers who completed assignments at the last Comic-Con were put on the "Priority List" for the following year. We will no longer use the term "Priority" or "Priority List". These volunteers will be called returning volunteers and will register for the volunteer program during returning volunteer registration. Returning volunteer refers ONLY to those who completed an assignment during the previous Comic-Con.

The Interest List will remain the same. Anyone who has not volunteered before or is not considered a returning volunteer and would like a chance to register for the Comic-Con 2020 volunteer program can sign up for the Interest List. Signups are taken on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached. There is no guarantee that getting on the Interest List will get you into the volunteer program. Returning volunteers do NOT need to sign up for the Interest List.

If you are a returning volunteer, log in to your Comic-Con Member ID account, select the “Volunteering” tab, and click the returning volunteer registration link. Returning volunteer registration closes on Monday, October 7, 2019 at 5:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT). You must register online prior to this deadline if you want to redeem your guaranteed admission to our Comic-Con 2020 volunteer program.

Volunteer Interest List

Sometime after returning volunteer registration is complete, signups for the Volunteer Interest List will open. The Interest List is for those that are interested in volunteering at Comic-Con 2020 but did not volunteer the previous year. Signups for the Interest List are open on a first-come, first-served basis until it reaches capacity. Check this page frequently for updates about Interest List signups.

Once the Interest List has reached capacity, those on the Interest List will receive an email notification with the date and time that Comic-Con 2020 volunteer registration will be available to them.  Registration will remain open for the Interest List as well as any unregistered returning volunteers, on a first-come, first-served basis until the program’s capacity is reached. At that time, the volunteer program will close and there will be no further opportunities to register to volunteer for Comic-Con 2020.

Volunteers

Comic-Con 2020 returning volunteer registration is now closed. If you are a returning daily volunteer, click "Returning Volunteers" below for additional registration options. If you did not volunteer at Comic-Con 2019 and would like to volunteer in 2020, select "Interest List Sign-Ups" below for important information.

NEW FOR 2020!

We have made changes to the daily volunteer registration program to make the registration process easier for our returning volunteers and fans who are interested in volunteering for the first time.

Goodbye Priority List and Interest List Registration! Hello Returning Volunteer and Daily Volunteer Registration!

In years past, daily volunteers who completed assignments at the previous Comic-Con were automatically placed on a “Volunteer Priority List”  and registered during “Priority Volunteer Registration”. For Comic-Con 2020, any daily volunteer who completed at least one assignment during Comic-Con 2019 is considered a returning volunteer and was able to register during returning volunteer registration. Returning volunteer registration is now closed.

New daily volunteers used to register during “Interest List Registration”. Now, that registration event will be called daily volunteer registration. During daily volunteer registration, any fan who signed up for the Interest List will have an opportunity to register for the Comic-Con daily volunteer program on a first-come, first-served basis.

Want more information about returning volunteers, the Interest List, and daily volunteer registration? Click each section below for important details!

RETURNING VOLUNTEERS

Comic-Con 2020 returning volunteer registration is now closed. The deadline to register was October 7, 2019. Returning volunteer registration was for volunteers who completed at least one volunteer assignment during Comic-Con 2019. Returning volunteers were able to redeem their guaranteed admission to the Comic-Con 2020 daily volunteer program during returning volunteer registration.

Returning volunteers who did not register during returning volunteer registration will have another opportunity to register during Comic-Con 2020 daily volunteer registration on a first-come, first-served basis. Remember, capacity is limited! You will receive an email notification when daily volunteer registration opens. You do not need to sign up for the Interest List.

If you are a returning volunteer and have any questions, please email us at [email protected]

INTEREST LIST SIGN-UPS

Comic-Con 2020 Interest List sign-ups will open soon! If you have never volunteered with Comic-Con, or if you took a break from our volunteer program, signing up for the Interest List is the first step in the process. You will not be able to register during daily volunteer registration if you have not added your name to the Interest List.

To sign up for the Interest List, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or check this page regularly for updates! We will announce here and on social media when the Interest List opens.

IMPORTANT: The Interest List is limited in capacity. Signing up for the Interest List is based on a first-come, first served basis. Signing up for the Interest List does not guarantee you admission into the Comic-Con 2020 daily volunteer program.

DAILY VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION

Comic-Con 2020 daily volunteer registration will open at a later date. Daily volunteer registration is only for those who signed up for the Comic-Con 2020 Interest List and returning volunteers who missed returning volunteer registration.

Everyone on the Comic-Con 2020 Interest List, and any unregistered returning volunteers, will receive an email notification with the date and time that Comic-Con 2020 daily volunteer registration will open. Daily volunteer registration will remain open for the Interest List and unregistered returning volunteers on a first-come, first-served basis until the program’s capacity is reached. At that time, the volunteer program will close and there will be no further opportunities to register to volunteer for Comic-Con 2020.

If you have any questions about daily volunteer registration, please email us at [email protected]

Possible. Did that happen in 2017 too?  That was the year with a one day sign up, before closing and we don't have mention of much advance hints that year in our 2018 thread.

Last year, the sequence for Interest List was more cautious.

NEW FOR 2020!

We have made changes to the daily volunteer registration program to make the registration process easier for our returning volunteers and fans who are interested in volunteering for the first time.

So correct me if I'm wrong, but there doesn't actually seem to be anything new process-wise. Only terminology changes, correct?

Yes, process looks the same.

I think we have a small mix of former volunteers (I lapsed last year) and first-timers on this thread.

To sign up for the Interest List, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or check this page regularly for updates! We will announce here and on social media when the Interest List opens. "

This sounds like they're NOT going to send out emails to solicit people for the Interest List.

Is anyone else getting that impression?

So far, no email, just the tweet and Fb post.

They could send a reminder email after tomorrow's sale, as a gesture of hope!

I'd be a great yellow status update as well.

Last year, Interest List opened on Nov. 1st (with Returning Reg on Oct 13th and Open Reg on Nov 10th). So I can see Open Reg being sooner rather than later this time around.

Volunteer Interest list is open.  I signed up through member id, going to the volunteer tab, and then clicking the interest button.  It took me to a confirmation page.  That was it!  :)

For those of you who are doing the volunteer interest list today at 10am PST follow these steps:

1. At 10am sign into your member ID account
2. Click the volunteers tab
3. Click the volunteer interest list sign up link
4. Follow the instructions and then you should be done

The whole thing takes like 30 seconds.

It's been so easy to volunteer these last couple of years.  A far cry from peak con when it seemed harder to  volunteer than it was to buy badges.

The volunteer interest list opened this morning, and if you go to your volunteer tab, there should be a link to click to join the interest list.

The Member ID should still show the Returning Volunteer checkmark instead of an Interest List one.

I think it's CC'20 Returning Volunteer Reg??

I couldn't find the information here but does anyone have any info on how pre-show volunteering works? I usually arrive early on Preview Night and have nothing better to do so I would love to do some volunteering on that day to at least get me back into the returning pool for the following year. Also are there any perks to volunteering on that Wednesday?

My pre-con volunteering experience has gone like this:

Since I checked the pre-con box on the volunteer registration, I got a later email that asked what days and general timeframes I would be open for.  I try to be in town by Monday to relax and get used to the time difference, so I check off every pre-son day. There seems to be a smaller number of openings on Wednesday, and they emphasize that a shift on that day doesn’t get a person into PN.  I have heard of some getting things to do around what is happening that night, so that could be a perk.  Since you will be there anyway...  ::)

The advantage of a pre-con shift is that you may choose any day EXCEPT Preview Night as your free badge day.
If you work an early shift on Wednesday that does not qualify you to attend Preview Night.
If you work during the hours of Preview Night, I’m not sure if your bagde remains active the rest of the night, allowing you to watch preview clips upstairs. Meaning, not sure if anyone would hassle you up there with a Volunteer badge.

Just to be clear (and so I'm not completely misinterpreting all the info on the CCI Volunteer page), you'll only get the email being sent out today if you're on the Interest List OR you missed the Returning Registration signup period. If you already registered during Returning Registration, you're all set, and the next email you'll get is sometime in June-ish for pre-con shift opportunities?

Here's a post from last year https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=9851.msg256486.msg#256486  about what type of info you will be providing tomorrow.  The Daily Volunteer Registration tomorrow will also ask (via a check box) if you want to be on a list for a volunteer shift on the days before the convention, what is termed a pre-con assignment.  I don't have any experience doing a pre-con shift, though I've checked that option during the online registration.

The process looked the same as before.  I don't know if they expanded on the listings for Limitations, or haven't noticed. The Limitations had check boxes for "Sun/Unable to be Outdoors (Prefer Indoors?)" Standing, and Walking up Stairs and other options that could be selected.

Oh wow, I hadn’t even considered what would happen to my volunteer status. In fact, amid everything else, I had actually forgotten I was a volunteer.

I guess I also always assumed if SDCC was canceled, volunteer status would just roll over to the next year (or whatever year SDCC starts up again)

I didn't even consider the possibility that volunteer status would change.  Since the rule is as long as you are in good standing after the last con, you are good for the next con.

Emails going out

Quote
In light of the announcement made by the Board of Directors of San Diego Comic Convention (see the official announcement here), daily volunteers have sent us many questions about their status for Comic-Con 2021. All those currently registered as a daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2020 will have to re-register for Comic-Con 2021 later this fall. Returning Comic-Con 2020 daily volunteers are guaranteed to get into the 2021 daily volunteer program when they register online.

An email notice will be sent when daily volunteer registration opens for Comic-Con 2021. Do not opt out of emails from us, or you may miss the notice. We will miss you all but hope to see you next year!!

Pretty much a best-case scenario for returning volunteers.

I just saw an email from CCI regarding @Home Volunteer Challenge.  It's urging us to volunteer for a non profit during the week Comic Con would have occurred.  I don't know how I missed it.

Did anybody else get an email?

I did! Who else is going to do it?

It also mentioned something about still having the blood drive in San Diego, but place and time for the drive are still TBD.

You might be able to combine two things into one.  Blood donation sites are starting to test for covid like they do HIV.  Just as with that, you will get tested as part of donating blood.  When I was younger I used to give blood.  Now I can't because I've spent too much time in Europe.

COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL SuperVolunteer Series Volume 1

In early June, we issued a challenge to our daily and department volunteers registered for Comic-Con 2020 to find a non-profit in their community and spend some time volunteering there. We are happy to report that many of our volunteers accepted the challenge! They were asked to email us  a photo or two and a little bit about the experience to earn a "SuperVolunteer" badge. Starting today, we'll be highlighting some of them in a series every Tuesday and Thursday leading up to Comic-Con@Home. We are so proud of their efforts and know that Comic-Con volunteers are truly dedicated to making the world a better place.

Was browsing the comic con merch store and found a "my volunteer jobs" section under account. Maybe implementing signing up for assignments online so you don't have to wait in line for next day assignments next year?

I have mixed feelings. On one hand I would love to not have to go to Marriott every day to sign up but at the same time it would feel like another ticket sale and I don't want that.

I don't like it.  I think it will turn getting a volunteer assignment into just another online sale.  How does that always go?  Look at the exclusives this year.  Look at getting conan tickets every year.

Since it lists your assignment and even the team lead, there will be a rush for the good assignments like Hall H.  It will turn into another mad online rush.

I don't mind going to get an assignment.  I kind of like going to HQ everyday.  I like the surprise of picking a time and getting a random assignment or picking an assignment and getting a random time.  For me, it's part of the comic-con volunteer experience.

They could just make it so you can only pick your preferred time slot instead of allowing to pick your assignment. Listing the assignment and lead could just be for reference to where and who to check in with.

They would also have to not allow for cancellations and reassignment or people will just keep spinning the volunteer roulette wheel until they get the assignment they want.

I don't think doing away with the central checkin staging area would be a good idea.  Many volunteers don't know where a lot of places are.  I've met some that don't know where Hall H is.  I don't see how many people would find that one place out on the sidewalk that a volunteer coordinator is for line management.

Having a central staging area is more efficient than every post having their own.  Many posts are busy enough without having to also deal with volunteers coming in piecemeal.  A central staging area also allows for reassignment.  About a third of the time the job I do is not the one I signed up for.  Once people show up, some assignments have way too many people while others don't have nearly enough.  So real time balancing happens at the staging area.

I think not having a central staging area would lead to mass confusion.  In the existing system there is no need for a volunteer to know who the lead is.  The lead can change in an instant.  If a volunteer is tasked with looking for one person in particular, that's going to be a problem.  It's even hard to tell what your assignment is in the current system.  That brief description on the card is obscure many times.  What your job is when you get Line Management can be so many different things.  I've gotten assignments where I couldn't even begin to figure out what it is from what it says on the card.  With central staging I don't need to know.  I'm just told what sign to stand under after I check in.

Have the assignment hidden until a set cutoff time for cancellations and reassignments after that you are locked in.

You can still do a central check in with online assignment if needed. With online assignments you free up volunteer staff to do other duties.

The online system could also just be for volunteers to track their check ins and check outs without having the paper stub anymore.

I have an account, and I'm a volunteer.  When I go to the tab, this link is not there.

i see now.  i had to add an account to the Merch Store.

If they're changing the volunteer process, which I kind of doubt, it makes no sense to me that it would be under the Merch Store.  But what do I know.
