A Grading Conundrum: Todd MacFarlane Spider-Man #1 Variants
« on: December 04, 2019, 04:29:08 PM »
So, I've 3 variants of Todd MacFarlane's Spider-Man #1:
  • First Print Green Edition *still in it's plastic bag* (they bagged this issue when it came out)
  • First Print Silver Edition (#1B)
  • Second Print Gold Edition

With the Green Edition still in its original plastic bag, I wonder how they'd consider grading that.  Common sense means that they'd have to open the bag, but I wonder what that does to the perceived value of the book as they need to open that bag.

The Second Print Gold edition had a smaller run, and as you can see from the photo, while the spine's not rolled, it looks like the actual pages of the book are a bit wider than the cover.  Is this one even worth getting graded?

Note that these are being sent out for Todd to sign at CGC.

First Print Silver Edition

Second Print Gold Edition

Input welcome, thanks!!

Wow, that is tough. With the gold just a tad wonky, I'd say go with silver. Plus it's a first edition. Green isn't bad, but I think the signature will look really good on silver.

Have you talked to the folks at your LCS? They may have a better idea. Good luck! I can't wait to see it graded and signed!

iirc on the bagged version you need to make a note saying that it is ok that they remove the comic from the bag, and they will send the bag back along with the slabbed comic. The label should have a note that it was polybagged. Would be good to ask them, might be different now.

Yeah I'm thinking of holding back the Gold at least this time.  According to CGC, he does these just twice a year.  I'm submitting the following:
  • 2 copies of Amazing Spider-Man (both already graded at 9.8, hoping they keep that number after cracking & signing)
  • 2 copies of Spawn #1
  • 1 copy of Spawn-Batman #1
  • 1 copy of Spider-Man #1 Green Edition (still bagged)
  • 1 copy of Spider-Man #1 Silver Edition

I think that's enough to ship...crossing fingers that these come back graded very well!
