Daily Volunteers

We have made the challenging decision to postpone Comic-Con 2021 as an in-person gathering until our 2022 dates, and once again hold this year's celebration as the free online Comic-Con@Home. We will return to the San Diego Convention Center July 20 - 24, 2022. Please see our full statement here.

If you were registered as a daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2020, you will have to re-register for the Comic-Con 2022 daily volunteer program, but are guaranteed to get into the program when you register online. An email notice will be sent when daily volunteer registration opens for Comic-Con 2022. Do not opt out of emails from us, or you may miss the notice.

I was wondering about what happens to the volunteers.  Not so much that we would get rolled over to 2022, but about the November event.  It seems, for all intents and purposes, it's not a mini comic-con.  It's a completely different con like WonderCon.

Yes that seems to be what it will be from all signs so far, a separate event event of its own name and nature.

It's nice that they have all this information ahead of time for the volunteers.

CCI just update info

Daily Volunteers
Comic-Con Daily Volunteer registration for returning volunteers will open soon, but we need to work out some details and get things set up. We appreciate your patience. Please note that if you were registered to be a daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2020, you are considered a returning volunteer for Comic-Con 2022. You do have to re-register, but you are guaranteed to get in when you do. We'll send out an email letting you know when to register.

New applicants who would like to register to be a daily volunteer must get on the Interest List first. Announcements will be made on social media and on this Daily Volunteers page when signups for the Interest List open. Being on the Interest List does not guarantee that you will get into the Comic-Con Daily Volunteer program, but it will be your best chance to try.

Yeah I'm keeping my expectations low lol. Do they usually announce it before they open sign-ups or do I need to be stalking the page?

They could just say...open!  I hope they give a bit of notice.

Comic-Con 2022 Returning Daily Volunteer Registration will open at 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on Monday, May 2, 2022. Returning Daily Volunteer Registration is only for those who were registered to be a daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2020 or who were pre-approved by the Daily Volunteer Department.

Normally, only daily volunteers who completed assignments at the previous year's Comic-Con are considered returning daily volunteers and are able to register for the following year's Daily Volunteer Program with a guarantee that they will get in. However, as there was no Comic-Con 2020 or 2021 except online, Returning Daily Volunteer Registration for Comic-Con 2022 will be open to anyone who was registered as a daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2020. The guarantee to be entered into the program stays in place.

I'm pretty sure there's a chance.  This is at the end of my returning volunteer email.

"If you miss the Returning Daily Volunteer Registration deadline, you may still register during the second round of volunteer registration for those on the Daily Volunteer Interest List. You do not need to sign up for the Interest List, but admission is not guaranteed during this registration period. Once the Daily Volunteer Program reaches capacity, it will close to new registrants and there will be no further opportunities to register as a volunteer for Comic-Con 2022."

Comic-Con 2022 Returning Daily Volunteer Registration is now open! Returning Daily Volunteer Registration is only for those who were registered to be a daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2020 or who were pre-approved by the Daily Volunteer Department.

Everyone who wishes to volunteer for Comic-Con must have a Comic-Con Member ID account. If you do not have a Member ID, please visit our Member ID Portal to create one. Be sure to opt in to our marketing emails to receive notifications regarding the Comic-Con Daily Volunteer Program.

Returning Daily Volunteer Registration

If you are a returning volunteer, log in to your Comic-Con Member ID account, select “Daily Volunteers” from the top menu bar, then click “Comic-Con 2022” to access the form. Returning Daily Volunteer Registration closes on Friday, May 13, 2022. You must register online by this deadline if you want to redeem your guaranteed admission to our Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Program.

Volunteer Interest List

Anyone who has not volunteered before or is not considered a returning volunteer and would like a chance to register for the Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Program can sign up for the Daily Volunteer Interest List. Signups are taken on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached. There is no guarantee that getting on the Interest List will admit you to the volunteer program. Returning volunteers do NOT need to sign up for the Interest List.

To receive notifications about when signups open for the Daily Volunteer Interest List, make sure your Member ID account is opted in to receiving marketing emails. We also encourage you to keep an eye on this page and follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Toucan - the official blog of Comic-Con and WonderCon.

Once the Interest List has reached capacity, those on the Interest List will receive an email notification with the date and time that Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Registration will be available to them. Registration will remain open for the Interest List as well as any unregistered returning volunteers, on a first-come, first-served basis until the program’s capacity is reached. At that time, the volunteer program will close and there will be no further opportunities to register to volunteer for Comic-Con 2022. Check this page frequently for updates about Interest List signups.

Daily Volunteer Registration Timeline

First Round: Comic-Con 2022 Returning Daily Volunteer Registration will open Monday, May 2, 2022, for those who were registered to be a daily volunteer for Comic-Con 2020 or who were pre-approved by the Daily Volunteer Department. Returning Daily Volunteer Registration will remain open until Friday, May 13, 2022.

Interest List: Shortly after Returning Daily Volunteer Registration closes, the Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Interest List will open for signups.

Second Round: After the Daily Volunteer Interest List signups close, Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Registration will open for those on the Interest List and any returning daily volunteers who did not register in the first round. Registration will remain open until the program’s capacity has been reached.

We thank ALL of our volunteers – past, present, and future – for their help and enthusiasm in making Comic-Con and WonderCon great experiences for all!

I can’t seem to reach the login portal. The server is probably overwhelmed by the traffic? Though there can’t be THAT many returning volunteers that they can’t handle the load.

EDIT: At least this is not one of those first come first serve situations. We have days to fill the form out.

We do have some pre-convention volunteer assignments available. If you are available to volunteer the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the convention, July 18, 19 or 20, please check the box below. This does not guarantee that you will get an assignment before the show. We will email you 10 days or so before the show if we have a pre-show assignment for you. If you do not hear from us, then you will get an assignment when you check in during the show (Thursday-Sunday July 21-24, 2022).

i was able to get back in & grab the wording

How can you tell that you marked that you would be available for a pre-con assignment? I loaded up the form but the question about pre-con assignments just reports True/False.

It does look like they changed how pre-con works this year.  In cons past, checking that box put you on the pre-con shift interest list.  Then shortly before the con the sign up email would go out.  You got to pick the day and time of the shift.  Now it seems they will just let you know if they have a shift for you.

"We will email you 10 days or so before the show if we have a pre-show assignment for you."

So I wonder if this volunteer registration is also the pre-con shift registration.  If it is, then that's bad for me.  Since a pre-con shift has always been first come first served.  I totally forgot registration started today until a few minutes ago.

Maybe not.  We have until 5/13 to register.  There's no indication all returning volunteers are signing up today.

If so, I still think you will be fine. The system didn’t work correctly this morning at 10 am PT, and no one completed any signup until around 11 am from what I saw, so you weren’t that late to the ballgame. I’m also sure not everyone has signed up yet as sessionka pointed out.

Two things:

1. It looks like we could register more than 1 person. Has anyone added another registrant?

2. I found it odd that even someone who did not do a shift, had their info auto-populated. It could lead to confusion.

I noticed that too.  I think it's because the software they are using is common across orders.  So placing a volunteer order is using the same mechanism as placing a badge order.  I'm curious if it works for volunteering.  If one person can register multiple volunteers then will that led to volunteer registration groups like badge buying groups?

The added text "If you are not a Returning Volunteer: Do not continue as your registration will not be accepted at this time" could have been highlighted or added as a separate line.

IIRC The form was all one page with mandatory fields at the top (Emergency Contact info) and ended with the pre-con box right before Add to Cart. Other than the changes mentioned in this thread, looked the same as other years.

With "Round 1" closing tomorrow, good time to bump the Timeline. Make sure to be opted in to Marketing Emails!

Link to the Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Registration in the dropdown no longer shows the complete form and no "Add To Cart" option for Returning Volunteers.

So "Closed" for now.

Very late to the game. But for a new person here that has volunteer questions

1) Are pre con spots available during 5/16 open volunteer registration? Or is it only open to those only in returning volunteers?

2) is open volunteer registration more of a waiting list?

3) what happens if you can’t volunteer on their assigned date? Say flight doesn’t arrive on time, or say Covid exposure and cannot attend.

Sorry all for the multiple questions but I hope some can help me out. I’ve been following this thread in hopes to learn something new.

The volunteer interest list, what you're calling open volunteer registration, stays open until they have the total number of volunteers they want.  There's no waiting list.  If you get selected to be a volunteer, you will be asked if you're available for a Pre-Con Shift.  Saying 'yes' does not guarantee you a shift.  You are not penalized if you can't do a pre-con shift.  Not doing a shift you signed up for during the Con may be a different story.

The questions you asked (and more) are answered in the packet you receive if you're selected to be a volunteer.

How do the preconference assignments work? If you get one - does that enable you to get one day badge?

hmmm...

That's a good question.  My first instinct is to say 'no'.  I've done pre-con shifts, and have never been offered a one day badge.  However, I never even thought to ask, because I've always had a 4 day badge.

What a pre-con shift does give you is the status of having fulfilled your minimum volunteer obligation.  Just doing one shift qualifies you as a returning volunteer for the next year's Con.

This article says if you work a pre-con shift, you can choose what day pass you want.  I am not sure if that is still the case as I have never done a pre-con volunteer shift, but I believe that was one of the benefits of working a pre-con shift.

a person does get a day badge of their choosing. I am not sure about the process. I'm guessing the person has to go to the vol. assignment area for the day badge

I can confirm that Preview Night is not an option for those who volunteer for a pre-con shift.

Whenever I've done a pre-con shift, it has always been BBL. There was one year when I did BBL and it was pretty hot in the Sails Pavilion (not sure if they hadn't turned on the a/c or it wasn't high enough) and that was a pretty sweaty shift haha. We had to take breaks to go refill our water bottles because we were drinking so much...

Another pre-con assignment is Premiums.  I think that's what it's called.  If anyone can fill in more details, I'd love to hear it.

I did BBL my 1st 2 years of volunteering.  I figured that was going to be my assignment my third year, but they put me on Premiums.  Funny thing though.  When they brought us to the room, the previous shifts had done such a great job, that they didn't have anything for us to do, so I don't really know what the job entails.   Since we had program books, that gave me the opportunity to start planning for the panels I wanted to attend.  We sat around for about an hour, and then the supervisor filled out our slips and let us go.  That was the easiest shift I've ever done.   :)

Oh, there is a benefit of doing BBL, in that you can get your own BBL right then and there, and you can get the WB bag of your own choosing. My sis always wants the Supernatural bag, and she was able to get it during a pre con shift.

Hello - General question for people who have volunteered. What is it like? Is it random what days you get assigned - jobs - hours - any info woudl be very much appreciated.

You pick the days and times you work.  You can work everyday or no days.  It's up to you.  You'll be more limited if you want a particular job.  Think of it as you get to pick either what you do or when you do it, don't count on being able to pick what and when.  That really depends on who's scheduling you.  Some won't give you a choice.  Others will list the jobs available at that time.

How do the preconference assignments work? If you get one - does that enable you to get one day badge?

That's exactly how it works.  You get a free day of your choosing when you work a pre-con shift.  After you complete you shift, stop by volunteer HQ and pick the day you want to be your free day.  You don't have to do it ahead of time.  If you want, you can go the morning of the day you want to be your free day and they'll activate your badge for that day.

We sat around for about an hour, and then the supervisor filled out our slips and let us go.  That was the easiest shift I've ever done.   :)

That's all up to the person in charge of that area.  Some will make you hang out for your entire shift even when there is nothing to do.  Others will cut you loose right when you show up because there's nothing to do.

That's YMMV.  I've heard of it happening but when I've worked BBL, we were told that no one gets to pick their own bag.  No one.  It's definitely a good idea to ask first.  I've heard people ask only to be turned down.

It is a benefit of working a post-con shift in premiums though.  When they start packing up, they put out the leftover bags and ring the dinner bell.  Then you can grab a bag of your choosing.

Yes.  There's really not much difference between a volunteer and an attendee.

I always have to tell this story. My first year (2003), I was a complete noob and knew nothing of SDCC. Back then it wasn’t quite the megalith it is today. To give you an idea, you could buy tickets at the door and they didn’t utilize Hall H.

Anyway, even though it was much smaller, the line to get badges was ridiculous, as it went all the way to Manchester Grand Hyatt. We were in line for nearly an hour and barely moved. It was hot and sweltering.

There were volunteers who roamed the line saying if you volunteer now, you could probably be done with your 3hr shift before you got to the front of the line to purchase badges. And you’d get in for free. And you’d get out of the heat.

For my sis and I, it was a no brainer. We jumped at the opportunity. And we ended up having the EASIEST job ever. Once an hour (so 3x), we had to post updated schedule of events flyers at several locations throughout the convention center. That’s it. Each run took maybe 15min, and the rest of the time we were free to do what we wanted. So not only did we save on badge costs, we saved on time that would’ve been wasted standing outside.

Interesting.  I never asked.  There are so, so many packets being put together (bags, program books, lanyards), I would just pick the one I wanted , and put it with the rest of my stuff.  When my shift was over, I would pick up my stuff and my bag, and walk away.  It was never a problem, and I wasn't the only one who did that.

Somewhat silly question - do you sign up for the Volunteer Interest list from the Volunteer page or from within your Member ID?

I don't see a link for volunteer interest on that page yet - which makes sense since it is not 10 PST - I just did not want to be in the wrong place when 10 arrives.

Thanks.

If I did not signup to Volunteer before Hotel Registration will I get an opportunity later? So far the volunteer tab on my member ID page leads to nowhere. I only have a Sunday badge because in 2020 I was only going to fly in and out while the rest of my group went Thru-Sun.

But this year I can go the whole time but only have a Sunday badge. Have Hotel and airplane tickets, I could do outside stuff but would like to do somethings with my family that is going and have the badges for all the days. They where junior at the time but now are senior but I read that it will be ok for them.

Thanks

The volunteer interest list opens today, so you have an opportunity to sign up.  It's supposed to open up at 10 am PST.  If you are picked to be a volunteer, you can get a badge for the days you don't have a badge.  ie...  thur - sat (if you want).

Here's what's on the site.

"To sign up for the Interest List, log in to your Member ID account, select “Daily Volunteers” from the top menu bar, then click ‘Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Interest List” to access the form."

Must be a significant number of people trying to sign up.  I was going to log into the site, just to check my status, and it's just churning.

Good luck everyone who's trying to sign up.

I'm assuming by 'volunteer shift' you mean a pre-con shift.  A lot of us sign up for those, but we don't always get them.

You will have no problem getting a volunteer shift during the Con.  There's never a problem with that.  All you have to do is go to volunteer registration. :)

Be aware that you've only taken the first step.  It's a multi-step process.

1) Sign up on the volunteer interest list. (This is where you are.)
2) Register to be a volunteer when registration opens up for people on the volunteer interest list.
3) Sign up for a shift at comic-con.

Once you're a registered volunteer, you are guaranteed to be able to work a shift a day during comic-con.  You schedule your shifts at Volunteer HQ during comic-con.

The only shift you can be assigned is the pre-con shift.  That's pretty much a separate process.  When you register to be a volunteer, there is the option to say you are interested in a pre-con shift.  A couple of weeks before comic-con, they send out an email to everyone on the pre-con shift interest list.  Then you register for that by noting what days and times you can work.  It's FIFO.  When pre-con shifts become available, they assign shifts to people based on first come first served.  If you want a pre-con shift, you'll have much better odds if you say you can work on any day at any time versus only on Monday between 2-6pm.

Regarding step 3. Do you go to Volunteer HQ on the day you want a shift and grab an assignment then, or do you go the day before? Does it change if you want an early pre-opening shift (like 6-7am)? If you want a shift everyday, do you have to go in everyday to pick an assignment, or can you go in once at the beginning and select all your assignments?

You can sign up for a shift the day before in the afternoon or evening.  So you can sign up the day before to save time.

You have to sign up for each shift separately.  So either on the day of or the day before.  You also have to wait a little bit after completing a shift before you can sign up for the next day's shift.

Unless it's changed, you sign up the day before for the next day, around 1pm or so IIRC.  If you have a specific time you want to volunteer, it behooves you to get to sign up as soon as they open to get your pick before slots start to fill up.

I was going to make a comment about being surprised the Volunteer Interest list is still open, but then I looked up the 2019 Volunteer thread, and it seemed the Interest List was up for around 30 hours before it reached capacity. It'll be interesting to see how long it takes this time around.

I volunteered once for SDCC many moons ago just to get a feel of the "other side" of the con, and it was a relatively fun, rewarding experience!  For those already w/badges but wanting to get back, I hope you get the shifts and jobs that you're best capable of; for those that are hoping for their last chance at SDCC badges, I hope the experience is all you hope for!

Good luck, all.

It hasn't been hard to become a volunteer for a while.  10 years ago it was really hard.  The interest list opened and closed in minutes.  Recently though, people have had plenty of time to sign up.  If anything, there has been a shortage of volunteers.  I forget whether it was in 2018 or 2019 but volunteers had to be recruited shortly before comic-con started through other means.

I thought the interest list wasn't going to open at all this year.  Since all the volunteers from 2020 could roll over to 2022.  But it seems not enough people rolled over.  Thus they need to sign up more volunteers.

Any info? When do they tell you if you're in or out? The parking lottery is coming up and I want to know where I stand.

from the cci vol site

Once the Interest List has reached capacity, those on the Interest List will receive an email notification with the date and time that Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Registration will be available to them. Registration will remain open for the Interest List, as well as any unregistered returning volunteers, on a first-come, first-served basis until the program’s capacity is reached. At that time, the volunteer program will close and there will be no further opportunities to register to volunteer for Comic-Con 2022. Check this page frequently for updates about Interest List signups.
https://comic-con.org/daily-volunteers

the returning daily vol's go first and say they will vol again this con
then the folks from the interest list will have an opportunity to say if they want to vol for the upcoming con.
I don't expect that process to be a short process, likely it'll take a month or so.
If you are accepted as a vol for this con, you will have the opportunity to volunteer all days Thurs-Sun.

Yes.

If your reason for volunteering is to get a badge for days you don't have a badge for, then you have to volunteer for a shift for each of those days.

There's nothing wrong with that.  People do it all the time.  It's just the reality.

On the flip side, if you have a badge for all days, you only have to volunteer for one (1) shift to qualify for returning volunteer next year.

It isn't time yet.  The interest list hasn't even closed.  Right now you are on the list of people they will notify when the second round of volunteer registration opens.  The second round is for new volunteers as well as returning volunteers that didn't register during the first round.  When you complete the registration process, then you will know right away that you are in.

As for your chances.  The interest list has been opened for 5 days and still hasn't reached it's target of signups.  Most returning volunteers should have signed up during the first round of volunteer registration.

The parking lottery isn't for another month.  Even if you are picked to be in the first group, you have a full week after that to complete the purchase.  There's plenty of time.

You do, except for the pre-con shift.  By completing the pre-con shift you have a free badge for any day of your choosing.  You definitely want to do that to maximize con time.  Another way to maximize prime time con time is to do early morning or late night shifts.  There are shifts that happen after the panels and exhibit hall close for the day.  Which especially makes sense for Sunday since it's an early close.

I do one shift a con just so I have the guarantee of attending the following year. I hear you.

It should work out for you. The critical thing you need to do is apply to be a volunteer as soon as they open it up to your group. That will happen after all the returning volunteers have applied. You should have notice but that also means there may be computer glitches.

I think your chances are good to be a volunteer.  Another avenue is to keep an eye on the official SDCC ebay account for badge sales.

"Comic-Con 2022 will return to the San Diego Convention Center on July 21 - 24! All badges for Comic-Con 2022 have been sold. As was done in 2019, canceled and returned Comic-Con 2022 badges may be made available to the general public through a badge auction to help raise funds for the Comic-Con Museum at a later date."

It's been so long, I don't remember...

Does an email go out if the volunteer interest list is full and no longer taking submissions.  Just curious.

While the link remains in the dropdown,  the "Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Interest List" no longer available to Add To Cart.

Other than the email, the disclaimer in the Interest List sign up stated that the date and time of the Registration will not be published online.

Just for clarification, the registration is only for those on Interest List, and not for returning volunteers, correct?

And is this registration also first come first serve? Or you just have to complete it anytime within the time window?

This will be first come, first served.  See below.

From their website: "Second Round: After the Daily Volunteer Interest List signups close, Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Registration will open for those on the Interest List and any returning daily volunteers who did not register in the first round. I was able to get through smoothly between patients!  I was rushing because I wasn't sure how competitive it was going to be but I think I got it right.  The pre con shift question--were we supposed to check the box if we were interested in those?  Or was it an I am not interested box?  I was doing a quick skim and after it was done started second guessing myself.

Yes, it's to get on the pre-con shift interest list.  If it works like it has before, a couple of weeks before comic-con that interest list will open up for signups.

Pre-con shifts for Wed are possible - they do not allow access to Preview Night. Hopefully you checked the pre con shift box on the volunteer registration page.  I think I had a Wed shift once, doing the bags.

I'm not sure totally how it works, because I have a badge for all days, so I just volunteer when I have a break.

It's my understanding that you have to sign up for each day.  ie, you can't go on Thursday and get both Friday and Saturday.  You go on Thursday to get Friday, then you have to go again on Friday to get Saturday.  I don't know the time.  I leave it to somebody else to clarify or correct me if I'm wrong.

You can schedule a volunteer assignment the day before after 1:30pm or the day of before 1:30pm.  Before 1:30pm they only schedule shifts for that day, after 1:30pm they schedule shifts for the next day.  There is also the two hour rule.  You have to wait 2 hours after completing a shift before you can book your next shift.  So if you finish a Friday shift at 2pm, you'll have to wait until 4pm before you can book a Saturday shift even though it's after 1:30pm.  To book a shift for the next day, it's after 1:30pm or 2 hours after you complete a shift whichever is later.  So can book your Friday shift on Thursday afternoon or on Friday morning.

If you'll be in town before Thursday, try to do a pre-con shift. That way you'll have an entire free day of your choosing.

I skimmed that guide and at least a few things aren't the way it works, at least for the last few comic-cons.  For example it says "if you volunteered on Friday and want to volunteer again on Saturday, you can check in at the Volunteer Desk any time after 1pm PT on Friday. If you didn’t volunteer on Friday, you’ll have to wait in line and check in first thing Saturday morning."  Unless it's going to change this year, that's not the way it works.  You can get a shift assignment the day before regardless of whether you work a shift that day or not.  So if you want a Saturday shift you don't have to wait until Saturday morning, you can schedule that shift Friday afternoon even if you didn't work a Friday shift.

Oh that's good to know! Sometimes I wonder how thick a SDCC standard operating procedure manual would be if they collected all of their policies and procedures in one place. There are so many different scenarios to consider for an event this large. ;D

They have a new sheriff in town. The head of volunteers for SDCC was just hired last month, I think. But the main person that does the volunteer stuff is still doing it, so things will hopefully still work as normal.

I just checked the rules for this year, 2022, and they are the same at least for the situation discussed.  So unless there's a last minute change, it should work mostly like previous years.  The big difference I see in the policies is to address covid.  It's just not the mask and the vaccine verification requirements.  There's also a 14 day rule.  if someone has or has had any symptoms associated with covid in the previous 14 days, they should not participate in SDCC activities.

Thank you for all the info I really appreciate it!  Unfortunately even with a Thursday badge I’m not getting into town until Thursday morning but my wife will be there the day before so we’ll work this out for volunteer purposes.

Quick Question - if you did not get badges this year but volunteer - are you included in the badge presale for the next year? I hope that makes sense.

No.  You get returning volunteer status.  Volunteering is the only way to be guaranteed to be able to attend comic-con each year.  As long as you maintain your volunteer status by working a shift per con, you are guaranteed to be able to register to volunteer the following year.  That's why a lot of people who do have badges still work a shift a year.  It doesn't help with badge sales though.

This is precisely the reason I volunteer. I know I've been very fortunate to have been able to get badges every year (at least 4-day every year since 2003 except for one year where we didn't get Saturday). But my luck is bound to run out one of these years, so guaranteed badges via returning volunteering program is my failsafe.

This year will be the 1st time ever volunteering for any con, let alone SDCC. So sorry if I ask any dumb questions. I know that you can volunteer on Monday-Tuesday(pre con days), but i was wondering specifically about volunteering on Wednesday as my 1st day of volunteering. The question i have since its Wednesday(PN), can i go earlier in the morning, say 7am for a morning shift? Also for volunteering on Thursday morning, what time is the earliest i can show up to get assigned a morning shift?

Wednesday is still pre-con.  The normal shifts are Thursday-Sunday.

I didn't realize you asked a 2 part question until I reread it just now.  If you want an early Thursday morning shift, the best thing to do is to sign up for it on Wednesday.  Otherwise volunteer HQ doesn't open until 7am on Thursday.

What times can I volunteer on Wednesday?

Pre-con assignments work differently from normal shift assignments.  For a normal shift, you pick the day and the time.  For pre-con, if you are lucky enough to get a shift at all, they pick it for you.  When you register for pre-con you submit what day and times you can work.  But they aren't exact times, they are ranges like how the cable tech gives you a 4 hour window.  In practice, those submissions are more like preferences than hard and fast rules.  I and others have been assigned shifts outside the times and even days we said we could work.

So it's 1st come 1st serve.  I know it says you'll find out by 7/17.  Does anyone know if they shut down the sign up if they get all the volunteers they need for pre-con shifts?  I've never had a problem getting a pre-con shift, but I'm Just curious.

I hope they send out the pre-con volunteer email assignments before July 17. It feels a little last minute to not know until 1-2 days before the shift assignment, especially if they will not be sending out email to indicate that we didn't receive a pre-con assignment.

The email specifically mentions that you need to be fully vaccinated for pre-con shifts so I assume you need the wristband or they will check your proof at check in.

Yeah got that but seeing only one place offers wristbands on mondays and out of the way. would they offer wristbands for the people who are doing Monday and Tuesday? Maybe just show proof during your shift perhaps.

Don't get your hopes up high.  For a previous comic-con, I was assigned a pre-con shift for the 19th on the 17th.  2 days before the shift.  It's just how it works.  Sometimes they really don't know until the last minute if or where they might need you.

I don't know why they are having that site open on Monday.  There must be something going on at the T&C.  Maybe training.  Otherwise there aren't that many pre-con shifts on Monday.  It's a light day.  It really doesn't get into the swing of things until Tuesday.  The site that opens on Tuesday just happens to be where Volunteer HQ is.  That's where volunteers will report for their pre-con and regular shifts.  Except if your shift is at the museum which doesn't do vaccination checks.

Interesting if they are bringing T&C back. Previously that's where you went to get BBL before Wednesday. I did many pre-con shifts there. T&C was closed for a few years and under massive construction which is why that stopped.

I am a bit confused.  This coming Sunday? Or this past Sunday?  My con brain is muddled.

This coming Sunday.  They told us when we registered to expect an email by the 17th if we got a shift.  Considering that everything has been late this year, the volunteer badge confirmations that we just got should have come out a couple of days ago.  I think we'll run right up to the 17th.  Even on a normal year, I didn't get a pre-con shift email until 2 days before my pre-con shift.

Mine says the same.  Unless something changed this year, I think it's just confusing wording.  Wednesday is pre-con.  As can be confirmed since someone got a pre-con shift for Wednesday.  I think what they mean is that volunteer HQ is open Weds through Sun.  So you can start checking in on Wednesday to pickup your badge as well as schedule a Thursday shift.

Update: It turns out that wasn't a pre-con assignment.  But if you look at the pre-con availability email, it states that pre-con is Mon-Weds.

I think those hours are just to pick up your volunteer badge.

I went back to my pre-con email from 2019, and this was in the subject:

'DO NOT REPLY: Comic-Con 2019 Pre-Convention Volunteer Assignment'

The body of the email had a specific date and time for the assignment.  Granted, they've changed the system, and the email may be totally different, but I would think it would have definitive information about your assignment, if you got one.

This is the email I received from CCI w/a Qcode Daily Volunteer
DAILY VOLUNTEER - MARRIOTT MARINA BALLROOM E/F/G
Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Badge Confirmation
July 21–24, 2022
Preview Night: July 20

Hello Sarita,
Welcome to the Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Program! You are guaranteed to get an assignment each day you want to volunteer, and you may volunteer any or all days of the show, Wednesday, July 20, 2022 through Sunday, July 24, 2022. You will receive a complimentary badge for each day you volunteer. The badge is only good for that day and may not be transferred to another person.
Please bring this confirmation and a valid photo ID on-site to the DAILY VOLUNTEER CHECK-IN AREA in the MARRIOTT MARINA BALLROOM E/F/G or to the Daily Volunteer Assisted Access Desk in Lobby A of the Convention Center if you are deaf or disabled.
Everyone attending Comic-Con will be required to wear an approved face covering regardless of vaccination status. In addition to wearing an approved face covering, you will be required to provide verification of full COVID-19 vaccination status or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours. Click here for more information. San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC) reserves the right to modify requirements or limits for attending or participating in activities.
This confirmation is good for Comic-Con 2022 only. Please keep this confirmation safe and secure. You may not transfer, sell, share, and/or duplicate your badge or confirmation. If it is scanned on-site before you arrive, your barcode will not work, and you will not receive a badge. The name on your badge must match your photo ID when you arrive on-site.

You're right.  That is just the normal volunteer badge confirmation, not pre-con.

I really think when they say Wed-Sun they are only talking about volunteer headquarter hours.  So you can check in to get your badge and sign up for a shift on Thursday.  It doesn't make any sense to do a regular shift on Weds.  Since for a regular shift your badge is only active the day you do the shift.  On Weds that's only PN.  A volunteer badge cannot let you attend PN.  So there can't be a regular shift on Weds.

In the pre-con email, they explicitly say that pre-con is Mon-Weds.

They are two separate processes.  What you got is the regular volunteer badge confirmation.  You go to volunteer HQ to sign up on a date and time of your choosing.  That's different from pre-con.  It's a different path.  For pre-con, if chosen, you'll get an email saying that you have a shift on this date, at this time, at this place.

I got this on July 5
Here is your chance to sign up for a Comic-Con 2022 pre-convention assignment.
Due to the unpredictability of receiving negative COVID-19 test results, we are asking all pre-convention volunteers to be fully vaccinated. Acceptable proof of vaccination guarantees you will be eligible to enter the convention center for an assignment on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Masks will also be required.
Click here for more information on the COVID-19 policy.
If you are eligible and available to volunteer on Monday, July 18, Tuesday, July 19 or Wednesday, July 20, 2022, please click on the link below and fill out the form.
If you are not eligible and available for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday assignments, please ignore this email.
This ONLY concerns volunteer assignments for Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. It does not affect your opportunity to volunteer on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Assignments for those days are only given out on site when you check in at the Daily Volunteer area. Read your Daily Volunteer Orientation and Forms doc for more information on daily volunteer on site check in and scheduling procedures.

That's the pre-con availability email.  That's a different process from the volunteer badge confirmation email we got this morning.  If you are assigned a pre-con shift, you'll get an email with a specific date, time and location.

I don't think anyone has.  They said by the 17th and considering that everything has been late this year, I don't anticipate hearing until then.

The Pre-con assignment email says this:

Quote
Prior to entering the Convention Center to check in for your assignment, you must show proof of vaccination in one of the verification stations set up outside Lobby D of the Convention Center for that purpose.  Masks are also required.

Does this mean these are special verification stations for volunteers? The Lobby D station for attendees is labeled a Late Night Verification center and is open starting on Wednesday at 7pm.

The station opening on Tuesday is right where volunteer HQ is.  That is where all the volunteers, except those going to the museum, check in for a shift including for pre-con.

I got my pre con shift too!  630pm Wednesday.  I submitted within 5 minutes of getting the email.  I only put in for the two latest shifts on Wednesday since I don't get in until Wednesday morning.  My question as a first timer is--when do we request the free day for working our pre con shift?  Can we do it after we complete it?  Is it an easy process?  I always have so much anxiety doing things I have never done before. Going way out of my comfort zone this year

It's super easy.  You probably won't be able to do it after you complete your shift Weds night for no other reason then volunteer HQ will be closed.  They also need time to process your c card to note in the system that you completely your shift.  So starting Thurs morning, you can go anytime volunteer HQ is opened to pick your free day.  It can be that same day.  It can be any day in the future.

Question from a random "I've never volunteered" fellow:

Is it common for people to volunteer even if they have 5-day badges?  Like, if they just want to get back?  I've never volunteered before, and it seems like a worthwhile thing to help out; maybe I'll look into it next year?  My main thought is "I'd hate to take a spot away from someone who DIDN'T score badges" which is one reason why I've never volunteered before.  I presume I can't walk up to the Convention Center or something tomorrow and just say "hey: I'd love to help if you need it!" or something  :P

I've always had at least a four (4) day badge, but I sign up to volunteer as a back up.  That was my initial reason, but I've come to enjoy it.  Don't worry about taking someone's spot.  If anything, I think they welcome as many people as they can get.

It’s so easy to get your pin this year compared to the tshirt hike. I like that they have the pin pickup table at the volunteer registration area. They scan your badge to make sure you did a shift, put a sticker on your badge and give you your pin!

I ended up working just 2hrs because their systems crashed as I was checking in, and by the time they got everything sorted, I had already “missed my bus” to my volunteer location. But they didn’t hold it against me. I worked at the professional or exhibitor badge pick up line (not sure which it was). I ended up working by myself stuffing WB bags with programs and lanyards. It was a quick two hours.

No one gave me my volunteer pin. But luckily I saw a stack of them on the table, so I nabbed one on the way out.

Oh, one question: is there a way to verify that your shift got properly logged into their system. ie, the badge you handed to the supervisor at the end of the shift wasn't lost in transit or something.

Not after the Con is over.

Why didn't you get your pin?  If you went thru the verification process at HQ to get your pin, that would have been a way to verify your shift.

Oh, Okay, uh, I wasn't told to go back to verify my status. I was told to just hand in the badge and that was that. Since I already had a 4-day badge, I didn't need to go back to get a day badge of my choosing.

Title: Re: SDCC 2022 Volunteer Discussion

My volunteer shift was processing volunteer c cards, the badges you got while you were volunteering and that you turned into your supervisor after the shift. They rate you from 1 to 5 stars, and I scanned those badges and put in your rating. After it gets put into the system, it would have shown that you completed a volunteer shift. I was able to see my own c card get scanned, and the next day I was able to go to the volunteer area to confirm my completed shift and get my pin (I couldn’t go right away because I did a pre-con shift so the pin table wasn’t there yet when I was done).

They don’t tell you the pin procedure (at least they didn’t tell me), but it was in the volunteer paperwork.

My shift was 'manning' the small press room (I assume it was small press) in the convention center.  I just had to verify their badge said press or that they had a green press ribbon attached to their badge.  Security and staff were also allowed in the room.  I thought the room was well set up.  They also had access to coffee and pastries. It was an easy shift. for the first 2 hours, I had a partner.  He started at 9.  My shift started at 10.  He was very friendly, so we chatted.  He got to leave around 12, so I was on the door by myself for a little bit.  Then my relief came, and he said the supervisor told him to tell me I could leave early.  The supervisor was a sweetheart (I wish I could remember her name).

As my shift was outside the door right by one of the escalators, every once in a while, an attendee would ask me a question about the location of a room.  I felt good that I knew enough about the convention center that I could give them a good answer.   :)

How to get the pin, and thus verify that your shift was recorded properly, was in the volunteer orientation packet you got when you registered to be a volunteer.  If you had asked for a pin instead of nabbing one, then you would have found out then.  That's the reason it works this way.  It's a check to make sure your c card got recorded properly.

Are you referring to the online form that was linked in the email titled "Comic-Con 2022 Daily Volunteer Badge Confirmation"? There is this line:

Quote
IMPORTANT: You will get a ticket with the location and time of your assignment. Make sure you turn in this ticket to your supervisor at the department to which you are assigned to volunteer. If you do not, you will not get credit for that assignment.

Other than that, I got no other packets or forms when I checked in. When I turned in my ticket, the supervisor was slightly confused as to what it was. In fact, she asked me what she needed to do. So I told her she just needed to turn the ticket back to the volunteer office.

The whole volunteer thing was a bit of a mess. As I mentioned elsewhere, the system crashed while I was checking in. They had to reprint my badge 3x before the barcode would work. And they didn't give me the plastic holder with the RFID sticker, so I had trouble getting through the security gate. Luckily, the volunteer guide who led us to our assignment got me through.

Read the very next paragraph of what you quoted.  The paragraph starting with "Thank you!".  It's instructions on how to get your pin ticket validated and thus confirmation that your c card was properly recorded.

Thank You! To show our appreciation for dedicated volunteers, once you have completed an
assignment you are eligible for the special Comic-Con 2022 volunteer pin! You will get a pin
ticket with your badge and information on where and when to get your pin. This ticket is invalid
by itself and must be validated by Daily Volunteer Department staff at the validation desk in
order for you to get a pin. After you have completed your first assignment you may get your
validation from the desk and get your collectable “thank you” from all of us at Comic-Con. We
are grateful for your support of Comic-Con! We hope that you will enjoy volunteering your time
with us and being part of the huge effort it takes to put on a convention like Comic-Con"

This is what I see when I pulled up the volunteer info.  I have to say I didn't read all that.  I can't really say this is what I went by when I went for my pin.  I may have heard an announcement when I was on line for my next day's assignment.  I will say the instructions are a little confusing (IMO), but it does imply you need to go back to Volunteer HQ at some point.

Yes, while I had the volunteer job of a c card scanner, the volunteer job of a c card runner was to go all around the convention collecting the c cards, which they then brought back to the scanners so they could put the c cards in the system. I did not envy their job.

So because I was paranoid that my volunteer assignment didn't get logged properly (because I did not go back to Volunteer HQ after my shift), I emailed SDCC last week just to verify, and they responded just now that yup, they logged my shift and I'm good to go for registering for Returning Volunteers for next year.
