Title: SDCC 2022: FoCC Hotel Exchange
Post by: Transmute Jun on March 02, 2022, 10:27:03 AM
UPDATE, April 27, 2022:

The FoCC SDCC Hotel Exchange section of the forum is now open. If you are interested in participating in the Hotel Exchange, please check out this area.

Please note that the Hotel Exchange section is a private area of the forum that is only visible to eligible members. Eligibility has already been determined and was made based on members' activity levels. If you are not able to see the private area, then you did not meet the criteria. The list of eligible members will not be changed, and no more people will be added to the area for this year. To be a part of the Hotel Exchange next year, please remain on the forum and contribute, to become an active member. We understand that many members have not been on the forums since 2020. The criteria were based on lifetime activity, so this should not impact anyone's access. We welcome all of our members back to the forums.

It is not in the nature of FoCC to exclude people. The forums are open to all and we encourage new members to join. However, over the past few hotel exchanges we have noticed a trend of people coming to the forum only for the hotel exchange and this caused some serious security concerns, since there is a lot of private information involved in these exchanges. Our priority (and the reason the Hotel Exchange was created in the first place) is to give back to the active forum members who contribute to the community as a whole. We strongly encourage new members to stick around and become involved in everything else the forum has to offer. This site is a great resource of information for all things Comic Con, and as SDCC approaches there will be many threads about a wide variety of topics, from programming and offsites to cosplay and packing. You do not have to be a part of the Hotel Exchange to be a part of FoCC.

We understand that some may be disappointed to not be a part of the Hotel Exchange. We hope that you will stick around and be a part of the exchange with us next year.

*** Original Post ***

The most stressful time of SDCC preparation is coming up. No, I'm not talking about badge sales; I'm talking about Hotelpocalypse. Of course, it's not 100% certain that there will be a SDCC this year (much less a hotel lottery), but we at FoCC are optimistic that our favorite event will return, and we are doing as much as we can to be prepared.

Although no date for the hotel lottery has been announced, FoCC is planning to run a hotel exchange again this year in the event that the lottery happens. If you participate in the Hotel Sale and are shut out, or are successful but don't get the hotel you REALLY want, we may be able to help. If you were lucky and have an extra room, increase your Con Karma by offering it here on the forum! Please keep in mind that the official FoCC Hotel Exchange will be only for active members of the FoCC forum. To participate, just make sure that you remain active on the site. We hope that we can once again assist our members with getting a room in San Diego.

Please keep checking back for details of the exchange. Good luck, and may the odds be ever in your favor!

This has been a favorite thing for me the last couple of Cons.  I'm local and don't need a hotel, but I've been able to jump into the lotto and help people out.  Transferring reservations is incredibly easy (I don't have to put any money down to secure a reservation; I transfer the reservation immediately after securing it and then the other person deals with the deposit) and is a nice way to feel like I'm giving back/helping someone else out.

Any other San Diego locals out there, I recommend you trying this to help others; I know I have been a benefit of folks helping me secure parking, and the old mantra 'it takes a village...' can be applied to "...to secure a fun, successful Comic-Con!"

Ive been extremely lucky so far in the hotel lottery, managed to get the Omni in 2018 and the MMM in 2019 and have a pretty good backup this year in the the Residence Inn Gaslamp so don't fell quite as stressed about it but I still really want the Omni again lol. So good luck everyone and I hope we all get what we want.

Same here.

For 2019, I did get a hotel during hotelpocalypse, but it wasn't my 1st choice.  Thru the FOCC Hotel Exchange, I got MMM.  I was then able to give someone else my initial room.

The guys at FOCC are THE BEST!!!

This is the whole point of our community. We try to help each other through the system and with information, so that everyone has the best SDCC possible. I agree with everyone that it feels weird to say it, but I am really looking forward to Hotelpocalypse again, and the sense of 'normality' that will bring.

I don't think I have quite yet processed that Hoteloccalypse could be upon us soon.  I've oddly gotten used to the lack of anxiety over it for the past two years and it usually coincides with registration anxiety but since that's been out of the way now for what feels like half a decade it's odd  as I can't tell if we're early or late for it at this point.

The hotel lottery is usually in March or April. My guess is that it will be April this year, just because of all of the uncertainty right now. It feels like everything is happening a bit later.

Very interested to see how the demands change this year with at least some fewer people going.

I don't think fewer people are attending. Well over 90% of people rolled ovr their badges. That isn't really a reduction that anyone is going to notice.

I agree that we may not notice the reduction in the crowd, but as some people have cancelled and they aren't reselling there will be some fewer.
I would however expect to see more differences in peoples spending with inflation and other economic impacts in the economy right now.
This may be most noticeable on hotels if more people fill up the cheaper / further out hotels first.  The higher end ones that are typically in the most demand may not be this year.  Its just a theory, but something I would be interested to watch.

Did CCI say they weren't reselling?  Even before covid they resold cancelled badges.

CCI announced a long time ago (in 2020?) that there would be no badge resale. Too many people rolled over.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they auctioned a few on EBay, or gave away badges in those puzzle contests, like they have done in previous years.

There has not been an official badge resale (open to everyone) in a looong time. 2017 maybe?

While I only started coming to CCI in 2015, it's my understanding CCI hasn't re-sold cancelled badges since 2013 or 2014.  From what I heard, they decided because there were so few cancelled badges, it wasn't worth it to have a sale.  Also, if I remember correctly in 2019, they put cancelled badges up for auction on ebay, and I got the impression they were going to continue that practice.

One more thing,

I attended the 'Talk Back' at CCSE, and the indication was the 2022 show was sold out.

Could that change?  your guess is as good as mine.

What you may see is them selling those badges (if any) through ebay for their charity. I believe 2019 had a number of pairs to be sold, and doing so through ebay will allow them to sell them on an ad hoc basis as they come up.  Speculation, but we'll see soon...it's March now and we're getting closer...

Yeah not sure if that was done solely as a fundraiser to open the museum or if it will be the new norm.
Title: Re: SDCC 2022: FoCC Hotel Exchange
Post by: chocolateshake on March 07, 2022, 04:16:40 PM
As has been pointed out, they did resell badges in 2019 on ebay.  I don't see why they would not do that again.  If they needed to fund raise in 2019, then that need would only be greater now.
Title: Re: SDCC 2022: FoCC Hotel Exchange
Post by: semigeekgirl on March 07, 2022, 04:51:03 PM
I believe they will sell returned badges on eBay to raise money. But if we think about 10% of badges were returned, and there are about 125,000 attendees... I really do not believe they will sell THOUSANDS of badges on eBay. So my opinion is that SDCC 2022 will be slightly less crowded than a normal year.

I'm not sure it will be a noticeable amount less crowded, though, especially depending on what you're doing. The number of people who want to get into hall H for a big panel is definitely more than 110% of the capacity of hall H. I would guess that the number of people who want close downtown hotels is also more than 110% of the available rooms.

But obviously this is all the guessiest of guesswork and I look forward to being happily wrong on any/all of it.

Something curious I spotted for WonderCon but have not seen before for SDCC is that there was a different portal to go into for exhibitors when it came to rooms. Is that normal and I am just now noticing or is this something new for this year? Just has me curious for the upcoming hotelpocalypse, as there was nothing stopping me from clicking into it and reserving a room as a basic user. Could be a "hack" for SDCC or something that could cause a headache when the time comes for us all.

This! Earlier this week I was looking at the 2019 hotel list to reacquaint myself with the downtown hotels, ie which is which, and where each is located, etc. and I was amazed at how much I’d all but forgotten.

A few years back I took the time to write myself a quick word doc on what to remember for hotels.  Things like which are my 6 choices, why did I pick those,  what do I need to remember for the form, and such.  It's not very long but I get nervous while filling out the form.  So it helps me mentally settle my mind beforehand.  It's like how I have a fear of forgetting to type in the AGREE during badge sales.    I have a sticky note that lives on my wall by my monitor for that one.  I see it all year long.

Gods willing it will be as smooth as the Special Edition sale, but I think that one spoiled me after so long of not having to worry about it. Time to get the systems back in order.

Totally get you there. I'm not much a list maker, pretty laid back as a general rule, but SDCC turns me into the most Type A human imaginable lol. For Hotelpocalypse, I make the same list every year (or I used to, at least), even though it varies little. There are always the same perennial four or five hotels that never change, and then the sixth choice is usually the one I switch up on a whim from time to time. Those hotels I didn't forget, but reading over the list there were definitely more than a couple I was totally like, "huh? which one is that again? ohhh yeah, that one."

It's just the strangest feeling, having such an elaborate, ordered system in place for myself for years, and then having the past two years completely wipe that out. Definitely glad to be able to blow the dust off this year though. *rubs hands together*

I don't think that will make much of an impact on those going for downtown hotels, most likely they will be listing the early bird hotels on their forms.

This hotel exchange saved me in 2019, I am very grateful to it.

I hope I can get a hotel off the lottery this year and that the lottery is soon so I have some security moving forward.
Conversely, 2019 was the first year I decided to jump into the fray and help folks out with a reservation.  I've never gone through the process before, as an SD local, but this was an INCREDIBLY easy process to go through.  Unlike helping folks buy badges no money is charged before making the reservation so all one has to do is be free to jump in at the exact start time the lotto goes live, wait for a confirmation (or denial) email, and then submit the results to the group to get a 'hit.'  As dopey as it may sound, it felt really nice to be able to help someone with a good downtown hotel reservation!

HIGHLY recommend those who can help but don't need the hotel to jump in and help; presuming my schedule will allow it, I'll definitely try again this year!!

I did basically the same thing, and then added something additional.
The first time I participated in a hotel exchange was in 2018.  My mistake then was not checking notifications in a timely basis.  Someone wanted to give me my first choice (MMM), but I didn't check notifications until the day after assignments went out.  By the time I saw it, the room was already gone.  I made note that for the next year, I would check notifications a LOT more.  Sure enough, for 2019, I did not get my first choice, but I had put in my preference in the exchange.  I set a timer on my phone to check notifications every 30 minutes, and BINGO, I got pinged that someone wanted to give me MMM (God Bless them).  I even remember where I was when the notification came thru.  I quickly let them know I wanted the room, and the rest is history.
BTW...I did get a room at another hotel, and was able to give that room away.
Bless you locals that participate even though you don't need the room.  There's a special place in heaven for you.  :)

Thank you for sharing, this is exactly how we want the exchange to work, everyone helping each other.  I think every 30 mins is a great time to check for messages, though, I hope people would at least wait min. an hour.  As someone who gets stuck in hour-long meetings I know, it's hard for people at work.  We have discussed it in the hotel exchange process, it's hard to tell anyone what timely means.  Everyone has so many different factors going on in life.

For anyone new I will say when those hotel emails go out, people are motivated and things start moving fast.

Also, if you have a room to offer, you want to get it transferred quickly, since there is a fast-approaching deadline to make the deposit. So when you message someone and don’t hear for hours, you have to move on.

The lesson is, turn on PM notifications on this site and check messages as frequently as you can over those 2 days.

I don't think fewer people are attending. Well over 90% of people rolled ovr their badges. That isn't really a reduction that anyone is going to notice.
Also another wrench to throw in is they had to make room & badges for kids that aren't child badge now.  My daughter should have had her last kids badge in 2020, now she will be 15 at this one.  Thankfully CCI made a plan for ones like her & we get to purchase a junior badge in May or June.  I emailed them earlier this year to ask and had to send them info.

I am wondering what will happen with this. My son was a junior badge back when we bought the passes and now he is an adult so wondering how that will be handled.

I don't think jr to adult is as big of an issue. My son back in the day turned 18 right after a sale but still went on his jr badge no problem.  If worried, I would shoot off an email to cci & ask they were ptretty responsive

Its been so long since I checked into FoCC that I need a refresher....what does it mean to be "active" in order to participate in the hotel exchange/give away?  I have always just given hotel rooms away, but figure that at some point maybe the exchange will come into play for me.  Just preparing! Thanks for the info in advance.

Sounds like it's already in play if you have been giving rooms away :)  Building lots of good con Karma.  I had someone the other day thank me for offering them a room 5 years ago.  I love how much this community helps each other and truly appreciates it when someone helps them.

My stress levels have increased with Hotelpocalypse. I'm in graduate school and the last day is Friday, July 22nd. Not only will I have to miss Preview Night, Thursday and Friday day, I'll have to find a hotel where I can check in Friday night.
I checked the Early Bird hotels and they don't allow Friday check ins and most require a 4-night minimum. UGH!!!!

If you're ok staying in Mission Valley, you'll find a hotel. There have been hotels 'left over' in the past

also, the studio's usually reserve odd blocks of rooms, beginning and ending on odd days. Who knows what studio's are doing for sdcc tho

Same feelings all around, I really want to know at least something about it. I have a backup that's been booked for quite a while, but I'll feel way more at ease and that things are real once hotelpocalypse has been resolved. Some of my friends don't feel that SDCC is quite real until hotels are set because of how the past couple years have gone.

Man, they couldn't at least have gotten it finished before I returned to work from medical leave as I just got the final-final confirmation this morning that I'm heading back tomorrow (it's been vaguely confirmed for a week now, but I was just waiting on the final all good.) Not that the past couple months would've been particularly good for me either, but I could have made it work haha. I guess I'll just have to deal with the hotelpocalypse distraction block while at work again.

I have a question.  I saw this on the sample form marked "new this year" : In order to defray the costs of credit card processing, a non-refundable service fee equal to 3% of each hotel deposit will be charged to the credit card provided for each reservation. Any change to a reservation that increases the required hotel deposit amount, such as extending the length of stay, changing to a more expensive room type, changing hotels, etc.; will incur an additional non-refundable service fee in the amount of 3% of the additional deposit amount. All charges will appear as “Comic-Con 2022 Hotels” on the user’s credit card statement.

Does this mean there will be an additional 3% non-refundable service fee with every room swap?  it's the etc on the end and the comma placement that makes me wonder.  It sounds like the extra fee comes in only if the deposit amount increases and not any change, but....  Admittedly its only like 30 or 40 bucks but still curious if anyone can confirm one way or the other. Thanks,

Ditto. But I checked the Pendry's site and they're still blacked out for the dates of Comic Con, so I'm thinking maybe it's off the list because it's being reserved for industry only. I do remember pretty much no regular attendees being able to confirm that they'd gotten a room there in previous years when it was on the list of available hotels, so maybe it's not an indicator of anything significant? That's what I'm hoping, at least.

There will be a 3% non-refundable fee charged for each deposit made. If you only make one deposit you will only be charged one fee.

The FoCC Hotel Exchange is designed to swap rooms BEFORE making the deposit.

However, if rooms are swapped AFTER a deposit is made, then yes, the 3% fee would be included as part of refunding the original reservation holder. I don't think there would be an additional 3% fee...?

So if you swap after credit card processing - you can't transfer your original fee, you pay another one as well.  I think I got it now.  Thank you.

If anyone wants to send me a good idea of what to put in the request I would be happy to do so. We were going to participate and offer it up here if we get anything.

This is going to be fun (NOT).  Well, I'll try to have fun with this.  It's been a crazy few years.  We went to CCSE and actually got Marriott Marquis a week before the event.  Was weird.

I also went to CCSE and I was able to book the Hilton Bayfront, which I could never get during the hotel lottery.

Since you get to put 12 choices down, I imagine that if you put the first 12 downtown hotels based on proximity to the Convention Center, you can't go wrong.

It's 6 downtown & 6 other if you go full 12

I just tested out the sample online form and it allowed me to select any 12.
I then went back into the 2022 hotel lottery instructions pdf and I couldn't find anything in there about having to split it up for 6 downtown and 6 other.

Can you show me where you got that information from?  It changes my ordering if it is the case.  I just want to be sure.

I think the 6 downtown and 6 anywhere else is based on previous years. I think they now allow 12 anywhere.

LUCKILY, I got dismissed very quickly from jury duty (I basically walked up to the back desk and told them how I'd literally just restarted from medical leave and my employer doesn't pay any days for jury duty and they let me go) and got to go back to work early in the day today. I DID miss the emails going out though, because there's basically 0 cell signal at work and I haven't figured out the wifi situation yet.

Time to go rally the troops even more than they already are on alert lol

I’m going to try for a hotel but my normal group bailed this year. Willing to share a room with someone.

39 M looking for hotel downtown. Cost isn’t an issue as long as it’s split evenly.

Strategy question:

Does anyone know how the ranked choices actually work?

For example, if my number comes up, and my #1 choice is the Hard Rock and my #2 choice is the Bayfront, and the Hard Rock is full, do I immediately get a crack at the Bayfront, or does someone else with the Bayfront as #1 get their choice first?

I've never been quite sure of how they're picked, and I think I've made some bad choices as a result...

It's been awhile since I've dealt with anything SDCC (it's basically been off my radar since the pandemic started). So how does this exchange work again? Is there a spreadsheet? Or do we just stalk this thread, looking for people having hotels to offer and those who need one?

@pegleg1204 (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=7976)  When the Hotel Exchange section is open, those who are eligible should be able to see it and access it. Instructions will be posted in the exchange section.

@Jesse O (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2849)  I believe that each form is accommodated one at a time. So YOU are allocated a room before going on to the next person. So if your #1 choice is not available, it will looks for your #2 choice. And so on and so on, until it has been through your entire list. If it goes through your entire list and nothing is available, it will allocate you a room based on the instructions you give it (in the check boxes at the bottom of the page) and if there is till nothing, put you on the waitlist (if you clicked that box on the bottom of the page). THEN it goes to the next person.

This is the way OnPeak/CCI have said/implied it is done, and it seems to line up pretty well with results we've seen here over the years. Although given OnPeak's general proficiency at this process, I would also believe that they just print out all the requests, roll them up into balls, let a small army of cats play with them for a bit, and then begin booking whichever ones they can still read in the order they find them.

Sorry for any confusion.  I was replying to another poster who said that for Comic Con Special Edition, they were able to get a good hotel room.

I was replying that the same thing happened for me as well for San Diego Comic Con Special Edition.  I was able to book a room for THAT EVENT that I could never get for the San Diego Comic Con in July.

I don't have any rooms yet, since the lottery has happened yet.

I wonder if the 'only' 2-day notice = LESS stress since it's only at most 48 hrs. of stress (plus, what, the extra weeks' waiting?).
FWIW, I live in San Diego and almost certainly will not be going after a hotel for me, but I am participating to help out my group and even I'm a bit stressed  :P

Actually I'm viewing it as 48 hours + 2 years worth of stress all jammed into a 48 hour time period!

And then it's another 5 days until the confirmations roll out.

So...2 years + 5 days + 48 hours of stress :D

@Michael M (https://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2539) Ugh, I got so stressed about 9-9:15AM tomorrow that I forgot about the 5 (or 12 if you're unlucky) days of waiting! The waiting is BRUTAL. At least now they tell you which day... didn't they used to not tell us exactly how long the wait would be? I have distinct memories of frantically refreshing my email in a car on the freeway while my husband drove...

Can someone clarify what the whole 3% is about?

I am hoping I can try while I am on a plane to Boston tomorrow morning but am also asking my son to try and possibly husband if he can get away from work for a bit - if we all get in by chance - and do our hotel selects - we have to enter a CC? and they take out money then? And if we end up NOT getting whatever hotel they give us do we still get charged? This is all new since I tried in 2019 and wasnt selected to get a hotel so just want to make sure I understand the process. Thanks.

Absolutely no money will change hands tomorrow. You just submit your form(s) and that's it. There's no credit card information on the form.

On 5/3/22 (or 5/10/22 if you're in the second round), you will (hopefully) receive an email letting you know your hotel assignment. At that point you will need to login to OnPeak (or create an account, or reset your password, or whatever) and CONFIRM your reservation by giving them a credit card and authorizing them to charge the hotel deposit and, this year, a non-refundable 3% credit card processing fee.

The fee is new but it's just added on to the make-the-deposit step of the process. That step does not happen tomorrow.
