I don't think fewer people are attending. Well over 90% of people rolled ovr their badges. That isn't really a reduction that anyone is going to notice.
I agree that we may not notice the reduction in the crowd, but as some people have cancelled and they aren't reselling there will be some fewer.
I would however expect to see more differences in peoples spending with inflation and other economic impacts in the economy right now.
This may be most noticeable on hotels if more people fill up the cheaper / further out hotels first.  The higher end ones that are typically in the most demand may not be this year.  Its just a theory, but something I would be interested to watch.

Did CCI say they weren't reselling?  Even before covid they resold cancelled badges.

CCI announced a long time ago (in 2020?) that there would be no badge resale. Too many people rolled over.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they auctioned a few on EBay, or gave away badges in those puzzle contests, like they have done in previous years.

There has not been an official badge resale (open to everyone) in a looong time. 2017 maybe?

While I only started coming to CCI in 2015, it's my understanding CCI hasn't re-sold cancelled badges since 2013 or 2014.  From what I heard, they decided because there were so few cancelled badges, it wasn't worth it to have a sale.  Also, if I remember correctly in 2019, they put cancelled badges up for auction on ebay, and I got the impression they were going to continue that practice.

One more thing,

I attended the 'Talk Back' at CCSE, and the indication was the 2022 show was sold out.

Could that change?  your guess is as good as mine.

What you may see is them selling those badges (if any) through ebay for their charity. I believe 2019 had a number of pairs to be sold, and doing so through ebay will allow them to sell them on an ad hoc basis as they come up.  Speculation, but we'll see soon...it's March now and we're getting closer...

Yeah not sure if that was done solely as a fundraiser to open the museum or if it will be the new norm.

As has been pointed out, they did resell badges in 2019 on ebay.  I don't see why they would not do that again.  If they needed to fund raise in 2019, then that need would only be greater now.

I believe they will sell returned badges on eBay to raise money. But if we think about 10% of badges were returned, and there are about 125,000 attendees... I really do not believe they will sell THOUSANDS of badges on eBay. So my opinion is that SDCC 2022 will be slightly less crowded than a normal year.

I'm not sure it will be a noticeable amount less crowded, though, especially depending on what you're doing. The number of people who want to get into hall H for a big panel is definitely more than 110% of the capacity of hall H. I would guess that the number of people who want close downtown hotels is also more than 110% of the available rooms.

But obviously this is all the guessiest of guesswork and I look forward to being happily wrong on any/all of it.

Something curious I spotted for WonderCon but have not seen before for SDCC is that there was a different portal to go into for exhibitors when it came to rooms. Is that normal and I am just now noticing or is this something new for this year? Just has me curious for the upcoming hotelpocalypse, as there was nothing stopping me from clicking into it and reserving a room as a basic user. Could be a "hack" for SDCC or something that could cause a headache when the time comes for us all.

That's a good question. Maybe? I haven't heard any announcements, one way or the other.

Hotel Exchange has helped me, and I’ve offered rooms through it as well. Hoping for the same good karma this year! It’s been too long I almost forgot how to do this 🤣
