Garry Leach died suddenly in March. He was an incredibly talented artist who co-created Marvelman (later called Miracleman) with Alan Moore for Warrior magazine 40 years ago. Garry would go on to co-create A1, a brilliant comics anthology in the late 1980s, and draw the first issue of Warren Ellis's Global Frequency. But there was so much more to Garry; his generosity was legendary. His warmth, humor, and, yes, stubbornness were all part of what made him so special. Two of his closest friends, Scott Dunbier and Doselle Young (and a few surprises), provide a brief introduction to the life and career of one of the finest creators you probably know very little of.

Come see how students can use comics, art, and the love of learning and share it with the world! Youth from Kabul, Hong Kong, Panama, and Tijuana are using comics to both connect and heal the planet. Since last year's publication of Volume 1 of Spirit Skies last year the group has moved onto the international phase. Students meet monthly over Zoom and share art and poetry. Recordings from students in Hong Kong, Panama, and Kabul will be included.

How can you pass that up? He's written Ren & Stimpy, Batman, She-Hulk, Silver Surfer, Fantastic Four, and the longest-ever run of Amazing Spider-Man. Ask him anything. They will also share construction tips to inspire you to make an epic costume without breaking the bank. The panelists will show how they used these techniques to make a 7’4” Gladiator Hulk costume and a Princess Ariel wheelchair costume for a special needs child through the Magic Wheelchair nonprofit organization.

Since Star Trek first arrived on TV screens in 1966, it has spawned multiple franchises and timelines spanning film, TV, video games, and more. This year marks a new adventure for the galactic saga with the arrival of Strange New Worlds on Paramount+. Paramount’s Erika Winterholler will speak to the newest addition to the franchise and the importance of partners such as leading video game company Scopely, who help keep fans engaged with the beloved IP and its expanding timelines. Alongside Erika, David Eckelberry of Scopely will discuss how the game team keeps up with the ever-expanding franchise for its popular title Star Trek Fleet Command (the most engaging Star Trek mobile game today) and why it’s important. The Bronx’s DeWitt Clinton High School is legendary for its many accomplished alumni, including many in comics. Among them were Will Eisner, Bob Kane, and Bill Finger. Kane and Finger would go on to create Batman in 1939, while a year later, Eisner’s The Spirit would debut. The creators of these two icons knew each other and shared many of the same influences. Michael Uslan (executive producer of the Batman movies), Athena Finger (granddaughter of Batman co-creator Bill Finger), Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight), Andrew Kunka (The Will Eisner–Jack Katz Letters), Michael Dooley (The Education of a Comics Artist), and Maggie Thompson (Comics Buyer’s Guide) discuss the surprising connections between the characters and their creators. Ben Kissel, Marcus Parks, and Henry Zebrowski have been filling our ears with laughs and shrieks for over a decade with The Last Podcast on the Left. This summer, their hilarious, obsessively researched tales of the morbid and morose transcend mediums for The Last Comic Book on the Left, a chilling anthology filled with Last Podcast icons, including Detective Popcorn, sexy Mothman, and John Wayne Gacy. The trio join Last Comic writer/rad actor David Dastmalchian (Count Crowley, Suicide Squad) for a panel filled with tons of heart—both metaphorical and literal. While many creators will tell you their greatest joy comes from their acts of creation, that joy must be balanced with the importance of earning a living from their efforts. But commercializing creative works can be fraught with peril; best to be as prepared as possible. Noted attorney Michael Lovitz, author of the acclaimed The Trademark and Copyright Book comic book, along with Legion M’s COO Terri Lubaroff, tackle some advanced issues faced by creators (and the businesses that they work with) when seeking to monetize their creations. This session will provide insights into options and opportunities for generating income from your creative endeavors, including licenses and transfers of rights; understanding key terms in contracts and licenses, from publishing to merchandising to distribution agreements; and key things to know when Hollywood comes knocking. Maite Urcaregui (San José State University) examines moments in Breena Nuñez’s autobiographical comics where Nuñez uses strategic manipulations of visual self-representation, paneling, and intertextuality to articulate her queerness alongside her AfroLatinx identity. Don Unger (University of Mississippi) explains how the evolving relationship between two of Elfquest’s main characters, Cutter and Skywise, challenges readers to develop complex understandings of sexuality and gender identity and expression. Nathan Caballero (Texas Christian University) investigates how the recent trend of comic books prioritizing queerness as a coming-of-age narrative both subverts and upholds the cis heteropatriarchy. Chris Richardson (Young Harris College) explores Bruce Wayne's romantic relationships from 1939 to 2020 to better understand how he embodies the dominant expectations of each period like an empty vessel of effect and desire.

Comics for Ukraine is a crowdfunded comics anthology through zoop.gg initiated and edited by Scott Dunbier to help relief efforts in Ukraine. Dozens of creators have stepped up to help. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund leads a discussion about identity censorship in comics, the importance of representation, and comics as tools for developing empathy and understanding of the world. Comic-Con Special Guest Amy Chu (Red Sonja, Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death) is a pioneering comics writer, publisher, and scholar. She is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School with a degree in Architectural Design from MIT and a degree in East Asian Studies from Wellesley College. After a late-night discussion in 2010 over media representation with her friend Georgia Lee, Amy got the idea to found Alpha Girl Comics. The Alpha Girl Comics imprint is focused on telling exciting and relevant stories centered on empowering images and representations of women. With the tagline “Stories for Everyone,” this groundbreaking entity has made huge steps in normalizing the voice of women in comics. Color can be used to do more than render your character model, represent reality, or be an excuse to break out the color wheel. Color can be used to harmonize, bring focus, and accent mood within the character and the environment. Using Photoshop, Durwin S. Talon (illustrator, comic book creator, designer, digital artist; DC Comics, Oni Press, Image Comics and BOOM!/Archaia) will demonstrate how color can set the stage for strong sequential storytelling.
