Is it now sold out?

I don't know. Why don't you check?

ETA I'm curious now! I just checked and there are still King rooms available.

I prepaid for a room there back in 2011, but it was about 9 months before the convention, the rate was about the same as the con rate and the view was overlooking Hall H . I'm sure they have changed policies because I have not been able to get that same deal for this year no matter how early I tried
The more things change, the more they stay the same

Ok, I guess I'm one of those picky ones.  ;) I just checked and the King rooms are still available but ouch.  Also for anyone interested the Marriott Marquis rate drops on Sunday night to 265.

Actually, you can get much cheaper rates for the Hilton on Tuesday and SUnday as well. The $600 rate has a 4 night minimum. I'd suggest booking that for Wed through Saturday, then getting the surrounding nights separately.

I hear you with the holding back of rooms thought. Regardless of the price I think they will use this as a test for what will happen next year. Yes it is pricey but there is a demand for rooms. Shame they could not say more about it in advance so people can react according and break their piggybanks.

Very true. It's not for lack of trying for all involved. It is the demand and the desire for close proximity. Last year I was only in my room for 4 - 5 hours each night. I was at the Holiday Inn on the Bay and I ended up taking taxis at night back because I was too tired after the long day to trek over to the shuttle stop. Still had a great time but I want a closer hotel this time around. Guess we all have to roll the dice for a hotel room or rent a condo.

I had been planning to book a room and send my current US Grant reservation down the chain (another member really wants to stay there) but I was gobsmacked by the doubling of the Hilton prices.  So, it looks like I'm keeping my current reservation which I was actually quite lucky to get at all.

Has anybody heard anything about the waitlist?  I was one of the 100,000 people that submitted at about the 3 minute mark; if there is any movement on the waitlist then I might have a shot.
