Hotwire and booking.com
« on: November 09, 2014, 10:03:38 AM »
I already booked a hotel through Hotwire & wanted to give the "heads up" to anyone else who wants to avoid the hassle of the hotel lottery. The one I booked was in the "convention center" section for $407/night & turned out to be the Manchester Hyatt. That is kinda high, but its less than I spent last year after having to pay twice after getting ripped off initially. And its so close. My wife & I feel its worth it.

Hotwire also has two in the "Horton Plaza" area for $377/night & $439/night. And there are more & cheaper ones if you want to stay further out.

I think the 'boutique hotel' they have in the Gaslamp area on Hotwire is the Indigo, but since I've never actually booked it I can't confirm 100%. I've seen it for 2 or 3 years now.

Just did a search on Hotwire and came up with these:

Based on what's posted here, I'm pretty sure the first one is the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

Based on the other available hotels (booking at 'full' rate) I'm guessing that the second one is Ramada Gaslamp and the third one is the Indigo.

That's pretty much what I figured. The "Manchester" one actually has gone down to $402 a couple times last week, seemingly midday, if you want to save that much more. You'll also come up with different options if you change the dates.

Thanks for the heads up for hotwire!! Stayed at the Indigo for Comic Con 2014. Booked it directly with them in February and paid a boat load of $$. (way too much I know..)  The wifi was awful (I could not upload any photos to the agency during the stay there due to cruddy speeds). The ac did not really work well and of course there was a heat wave this year. It was a cute place just too many negatives for us. It was quicker walking versus taking the shuttle. The CCI info states it's a 5 minute drive to center from hotel. Nope..more like 45 minutes. I walked faster even with a messed up knee.  Granted a hotel during the con is mostly for showering and a bit of recovering since most of the time is at the convention center. (just wanted to give a heads up to any considering this hotel).

Heads up, they have a 4 1/2 star hotel for only $206/night. Can't imagine those will last long at that price. There's also a 4 star hotel for $260/night. I guess I should have waited.

Any idea to what the 4.5 star hotel might be? I might just book this.

After doing some research, I narrowed it down to the Omni Hotel (Pet Friendly and 4.5 stars)

Are you definite it's the Omni? What about the Intercontinental Holiday Inn? Or the Sofia?

I went to Betterbidding and there were only two 4.5 hotels listed

Marrriot Gaslamp
Omni San Diego

Marriott doesn't allow pets so that makes Omni the only choice

I just took one for the team and booked it - the $206 rate on Hotwire during SDCC dates IS the Omni!!!!

I booked from the 8 to the 13 of July.    OMG - that was a bit nerve wracking, but the Omni would be on my TP list anyways, so to get it for close to $100 less a night is totally awesome.

Now I just have to hope that something crazy doesn't happen and omni cancels the reservation at the last minute or something.  I have never used Hotwire before - has anyone had that experience with a hotel booking during a high profile event like SDCC?

Rate went up to $212, and then $234 when I changed it to 3 people, but still a great deal. Awesome find! Thanks!!

"Well, I'm glad I could help", he said through gritted teeth. Just kidding. I shouldn't have jumped the gun & booked the Manchester one for twice what the Omni is going for. Like I said, booking a place was such a nightmare last year, we justed wanted to get it over with. I will reserve this knowledge for 2016, though.

As far as using Hotwire, we did use it last year for SDCC, but the hotel was in Little Italy, not the Gaslamp. That said, we had no issues. The hotel was nice, albeit further away than we would have liked.

I'm curious which hotel is the one going for $260/night.
