Was that 4 people?

Sorry, that was for 2 people.  Forgot to clarify.

Probably a dumb question but do professionals ever get separate hotel lottery like how vendors do? Or do they get included with everyone else at hotel lottery?
No

Follow up question: do Professionals have a better chance at attaining a hotel based on that or is it just like general attendees and everyone has an equal chance?
No we are like general attendees

As far as I understand it, the studios buy blocks of rooms with the anticipation of making some available for the talent. I can see how they could come up short close to the Con...

About ten years ago I managed to get a room at Hard Rock because they released the rooms the studios were holding. That was literally Tuesday before the convention and I just let my friends use the room we already had booked. I just walked over from the Marriott, where we had a room already, and asked.

This is my first year in a very long time I haven't been able to manage to snag a random backup hotel on a booking site during the off season.  :'(

They are onto us.

I haven't managed to have a backup hotel for years and years. The actual badge price is by far the smallest part of my annual SDCC budget - so much so that if I can't get a hotel at the convention rate, I'm probably just not going. :(

Although there are usually always hotels on the shuttle route available anyway, so I am not super worried.

This will be my first hotelpocalypse with the group. My wife and I usually stay at Manchester Grand. We’ve stayed at others, but the commute on the SDCC bus system is so long, we prefer walking distance. I hope I can help the group this year!!

I'm in the same boat! Fingers crossed!

Same! We usually stay Saturday before through Tuesday after con to do touristy stuff so sometimes I can sneak a deal for hotels that look for the longer bookings, but so far this year I haven't found anything.  I'm hoping we do well for hotel lotto.

I'm a little confused.  Are you saying in the past you could book downtown hotels at a booking site for Con Dates, or was it any hotel on the shuttle route.  Just curious.

There have sometimes been downtown hotels available to book directly for con with not super insane prices.  Last year I was able to book the Residence Inn as a backup.

In the past, I've been able to catch downtown hotels for con dates by checking booking sites randomly several months in advance. People have even posted in this thread when this happens from time to time. It's few and far between and it's completely random but I've always had at least one option if I strike out during the OnPeak sale.

Last year I had Sofia (and a few others on the forum did  as well) for a very low rate but ultimately was able to pass it along because I got a hotel in the sale. The Sofia rate was very hard to pass up though.

It used to be possible, especially because the "convention rates" are really just sort of the normal rates for these hotels anyway. For instance the MMM was $319/night (before taxes fees etc) at the con rate last year, but I just checked their website and most nights their rate is somewhere between $215-450, with the high end only on holiday weekends or similar. So getting the convention rate just means you don't have to pay $700+ per night for a Holiday Inn level room.

After Taxes, fees, and selling your first child to them I think everything will be closer to $350-$400.  I miss thinking the $200 a night was expensive.
Just perspective for ppl,  my room is a min of 3 ppl, 2 beds from tues - mon & bayfront cost after deposit was about $2500

I'm hoping to get a hotel but IF I don't, I have a backup and if anyone needs a place to stay. It's that Marriott vacation at the very end of gaslamp. 2 double beds, a sofabed for $2800. Can fit up to 6 ppl. Too soon to say now who needs a place but when the time comes, I've got you guys covered haha.
If I do get a hotel, that room will be up for grabs. Always willing to help out fellow nerds during sdcc.

Would we know by now if the hotel sale is this week?
