The final day of our comprehensive course on microbudget moviemaking will revolve around what to do after your movie is shot. Panelists will go over the basics of postproduction, as well as what software to use for editing, graphic design, sound design, visual FX, and finally, how to optimize your movie for uploading to the internet. As generations of nerds give way to new generations of nerds, what better way to talk about it than with one of pop culture's favorite nerdy families? Real father and son podcasting/writing team Clint and Travis McElroy (The Adventure Zone) host a conversation about the challenges and responsibilities of influencing the next generation of nerds. What is important to pass on and how do we do it? They will be approaching the subject both as parents and as creators. The McElroys and their guest panelists including Aabria Iyengar, (TAZ Imbalance; Exandria Unlimited), Johnny Stanton (Cleveland Browns), and B. Dave Walters (G4 TV) will be sharing what they have learned and maybe even learning from each other.

Panelists will discuss concrete strategies to reach their community. Sit and talk about Jack Kirby with comic book superstar Frank Miller, comic book editor Steve Saffel, Rand Hoppe (acting executive director of the Jack Kirby Museum & Research Center), and Jack’s grandson, Jeremy Kirby. These animated adventures make children aware of the process of manufacturing chocolate and of how it comes from cocoa plantations in different parts of the world to your mouth. Experts examine comics’ influence across media. Barbara Margarethe Eggert (University of Art and Design Linz) looks at the history of comic exhibitions in museums and galleries to show how media-specific comic exhibitions can allow for forms of comics’ experience that can only be made at those exhibitions. Rich Shivener (York University) argues for a ground-level, practitioner-based approach to studying digital comics. Phillip Vaughan (Abertay University) looks at recent advances in digital comics (as well as some notable failures) to evaluate how creators are at the forefront of this digital revolution. Edd Schneider (Ithaca College) and Neha Patnaik (Ithaca College) highlight comic books’ important place in Disney history and how they have served as a petri dish for innovation in intellectual property.

Babylon 5 was not only a seminal TV show, pushing the boundaries of storytelling, it was also a technical breakthrough. Bone creator Jeff Smith discusses his new graphic novel series TUKI, a heavily researched humor/fantasy epic set 2 million years ago, when multiple species of humans existed at the same time, but only one controlled fire! Other topics will include the status of the Bone movie and his new anthology project for Scholastic/Graphix called Bone: Tall Tales 2. Smith will be joined on stage by Tim Fielder, the Afro-futurist author of the graphic novels INFINITUM and Matty’s Rocket, to discuss the years they supported each other while working on their current books. Brian Doherty, author of a new history of underground comix, Dirty Pictures: How an Underground Network of Nerds, Feminists, Misfits, Geniuses, Bikers, Potheads, Printers, Intellectuals, and Art School Rebels Revolutionized Art and Invented Comix, will lead a discussion with Gary Groth (longtime editor The Comics Journal and publisher of Fantagraphics) and renowned cartoonist Gilbert Hernandez (Love and Rockets), about the past, present, and future of underground comix’s impact on the comics form, discussing how a legacy of graphic transgression, often hilarious and frequently troubling, by the likes of Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Howard Cruse, Art Spiegelman, Diane Noomin, Spain Rodriguez, and Aline Kominsky-Crumb blew open space for the exploration of autobiographical feminism, gay coming of age, and comics-as-museum-worthy art while remaining as crude, vulgar, and hilarious as comics can get.
