2022 SDCC options on badges
« on: September 01, 2021, 05:20:55 PM »
I just received this email
Because Comic-Con was unable to take place in person the last two years, we are giving individuals that purchased badges for Comic-Con 2020 three options:
Transfer your badge to Comic-Con 2022,
Request a refund for your Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase, or
Transfer your badge credit to Comic-Con Special Edition.
If you would like to transfer your badge to Comic-Con 2022, no action is required from you. Transfers to 2022 will happen automatically.

If you would prefer a refund, please visit You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and submit the refund request form prior to May 1, 2022. No refunds will be accepted after this date.

If you would like to transfer your Comic-Con 2020 badge credit toward Comic-Con Special Edition, our November 2021 show, please visit You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login for details on how to transfer your badge. The deadline to request a transfer is September 20, 2021.

Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you in person again soon!

More info from the CCI site:

"If you would like to transfer your Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase to Comic-Con Special Edition (November 26 - 28, 2021) some important restrictions apply. The deadline to request a transfer is September 20, 2021.

The cost to attend Comic-Con Special Edition is $150. You may not transfer your Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase if the total amount of your badge order was less than $150.

You may not do a “partial” badge transfer to Comic-Con Special Edition. If you choose to transfer your purchase, your entire Comic-Con 2020 badge order will be cancelled and you will be refunded the difference.

If you choose to transfer your Comic-Con 2020 badge purchase to Comic-Con Special Edition, you will not be able to attend Comic-Con in 2022. Your badge order will be cancelled and the difference will be refunded.

Please contact [email protected] for information on how to transfer your Comic-Con 2020 badge credit to Comic-Con Special Edition. "

Why would anyone want to transfer to Special Edition unless they can't make 2022? Do people who go to SE get priority for registration for next year (ahead of those who don't already have tickets)?

I did think about transferring it to the Special Edition, but I think I will still aim for 2022.  So I guess the Special Edition is happening.  Positivity cases in both Los Angeles and Orange Counties have been dropping like a rock, don’t know how San Diego County is doing.

It sounds like they still will not be offering up badges for sale for 2022, even if people chose the transfer option. my guess is that they want reduced capacity for 2022, and they don't have that with 90%+ of 2022 badges being rolled over twice.

I do wonder though if this will have any impact on CCSE badge sales... how many badges will be available? It looks like the cost will be $150.

If the deadline to transfer 2020 badges is 9/20, I'm assuming the badge sale for CCSE will be announced shortly after that.  Should be interesting to see how that goes.  I'm planning to buy.

I agree. I mean, I'll probably pay it. But $150 is more than the last pre-pandemic Wondercon, and CCI:SE will almost certainly have less celebs/studios/vendors etc. It seems like a lot for what might essentially turn out to be a fan meetup.

It is possible things are costing more since they have to pay people to work a holiday weekend.  They may also have given vendors discounts to encourage them to come on that weekend.

I agree though, it's a lot to pay with so much uncertainty.  In Denver, we can get refunds up to two weeks before so it was less of a gamble.

I think the biggest reason for the price is the additional cost of doing business during covid.  They will need to check vaccination/testing status at the door.  While volunteers can do that initially, if there's a violation you can't expect a volunteer to deal with it.  They will need to hire additional security for that.  Then there's the additional cleaning and PPE for the workers.  The convention center and the security contractor will charge more for that.  I'm assuming that CCI will take care of it's own staff and volunteers similarly.  That costs money.

Also, if they are renting out the entire convention center, that cost will have to be born by a smaller number of attendees compared to comic-con.  Less payers mean a higher cost per.  Then depending if it spreads out into the Gaslamp like a regular comic-con, then the cost of that security will also have to be born by a smaller number of payers than a normal comic-con.  Not to mention that many things are subsidized by exhibitors at a regular comic-con like paying for the bags.  With less sponsors, something has to make up the cost.  So considering everything $150 doesn't seem so out of line for me.  It maybe close to what the fixed costs for putting on a con at the convention center is.  A normal comic-con must make a "profit".  That's how they have money to put away as a reserve against bad times.

All of that is true, and I'm not really begrudging them for having to charge what they charge. But it doesn't change the fact that the price-to-value ratio to me is still much worse than in past years, because it's more money for less of what I value.

But maybe I should try to reframe my priorities and place a higher personal value on 1) getting to attend any sort of con right now and 2) getting to do it somewhere that is at least trying to do do it safely (by requiring vax/tests/masks). Still, it's hard not to feel like I'm paying more to get less on top of all the other pandemic disappointments.

When they first announced the con, they actually said it was to shore up their finances due to the lost shows in the pandemic -- the main reason for the higher prices could just simply be that they need $$$$$$!
