Very true.  I met some people who do everything comic-con related except go to comic-con.  They take part in Hotelpocalypse to get a hotel and then only go to the offsites.  They've been doing it for years.

Hotelpocalypse is a fun name.

Is there a reason that the hotels don’t check to see if your a Con attendee before letting people book at the Com rates?

Because it's not worth the effort.

Because the hotels are only required (by contract with CCI) to offer a certain number of rooms at the discounted con rate. They are able to sell all the rest of their rooms at market value (usually 2x to 10x the discounted rate). They are going to sell all of the discounted rooms and most of the non-discounted rooms regardless, so they don't care who gets them. In fact there's an argument to made that they would almost prefer non-badgeholders to get the discounted rooms since people who already have a badge are more likely to bite the bullet and pay inflated rates because they've already secured a badge. That last bit is just speculation, though.

Interesting, never heard that before. It would really suck to have to travel to San Diego for work or something during SDCC!

One year American Idol held their auditions at Petco at the same time as CC and, of course, all the hopefuls got to San Diego and there were no rooms to be gotten.  They were forced to camp out in their cars & tents. (Not the best scenario for their vocal chords).  Always interesting things goin down around SDCC.

It's business yall.    :)

Hotels are For profit, and Comic Con is 'Christmas' for them!!!  Occupancy is probably very close to 100%, and while they reserve blocks of rooms for the Con, they do raise the prices above what they normally charge the rest of the year.

I'm not complaining.  I'll be right there for Hotelpocalypse with every one else, and will thank God if I get my first choice.   :)
