SDCC 2018 Best Of.
« on: July 23, 2018, 08:49:28 AM »
What did you think was best of in various categories at comic-con this year.

Here are mine.

Best Panel: Deadpool 2 (I only attend the panels for 1 day).

Best thing on the Exhibit Floor: The Dwarf at the Weta Booth (I only walked through the exhibit hall once quickly).  Well done sir.  Was he one of the actors in the movie?  He looked just like one of the dwarfs in the Hobbit series.  The prosthetics were good.  If he wasn't one of the actors in the movie, the prosthetics were incredibly good.  It was like the character walked right off the screen.  Full armor, suit and everything.

Best Food Experience inside the Convention Center: Nachos which was the only thing I ate there.

Best Food Experience outside of the Convention Center: Taco Bell.

Best Offsite: The Nerdist House.  They had an open bar.  Watching a panel with Paul Bettany from 5 feet away while sipping a cocktail, priceless.

Best Swag: Cast signed WB poster.

Best Celeb Interaction: The confused look from a Krypton cast member as I said that Taco Bell was the best place to eat at Comic-Con this year.

Best Party: The SyFy parties at the Children's Museum.  It was big, had free food, had free drinks, had a live band, had other activities if you aren't into dancing and had swag.  It was a very comic-con party unlike some of the other parties where it's really no different than going to any club any time you want.

Great post!

Best Panel: My Hero Academia. Legion panel a close second.

Best thing on the Exhibit Floor: Cartoon Network Buttons

Best Food Experience inside the Convention Center: Only got a cup of coffee upstairs. Was surprised that for $3, it was a lot of coffee (was expecting a tiny cup) The caffeine was much needed!

Best Food Experience outside of the Convention Center: Monzu Fresh Pasta

Best Offsite: Adult Swim Toonami Pre-flight: Pillows Concert (I think I told everyone I talked to about it-sorry about that, everyone!) I posted a pic on Instagram, and the band re-posted and tagged me! <3

Best Swag: Signed Lucifer poster. Of the stuff more people had a chance at: Legion tee-shirt (although DH got a small-he's pretty bummed about it). I also liked the luggage tag being given out outside the Omni for Hotel Royale. (I think that is the only outside swag I got this year)

Best Celeb Interaction: Scott Adsit doing a fist bump with a little kid at the Big Hero 6 panel. One of the most adorable and heart warming things I have ever seen.

Best Party: Fundays!

Best Panel: "Best and Worst Manga of 2018." This panel is moderated with a timer and a bell. Each person on the panel would pitch a manga to the audience, and have about 60 seconds to do so. The result was a fast-paced, dense panel with oodles of great reading suggestions.

Best thing on the Exhibit Floor: The Deadpool / Showbiz Pizza animatronic band.

Best Food Experience outside of the Convention Center: Berkeley Pizza (that's my choice every year, so, I'm biased...)

Best Swag: Free preview of RUN from Abrams books, the next series from the Eisner-winning team from the MARCH graphic novel trilogy.

Best Celeb Interaction: Rode an elevator with former Doctor Who companion Freema Ageyman. Oh my is her voice lovely.

Best Party: Webtoons. They had a "casino" theme, with gambling tables, music, free booze, amazing rooftop venue.

Nice post idea!!

Best Panel: Deadly Class. Been reading it since it came out and it is easily in my Top 5 comic series of all time. So I was beyond excited for this panel.

Best thing on the Exhibit Floor: My favorite is always Her Universe in terms of merch. As far as things to see: tie between Shenron (the Dragon Ball dragon above the Tamashi booth) or life size Andre The Giant lol.

Best Food Experience inside the Convention Center: We always get the breakfast burritos lol.

Best Food Experience outside of the Convention Center: I’m local...and my parents came to visit to watch our toddler while we attend the con. So I’m gonna go with homemade filipino food from my Dad cause I rarely cook it myself.

Best Offsite: We always enjoy Nintendo Lounge

Best Swag: Nintendo Lounge swag. We got a nice nintendo embroidered hat, a super nice Donkey Kong plush and Mario plush.

Best Celeb Interaction: Mmmm...Signing with Austin St John (original Red Ranger). Got a signature if you purchased the exclusive. Fun(ny) fact, I totally had a crush on him when I was in middle school lol. Also got the signing with Neil Gaiman. That was cool. I missed the panel. But I can’t wait to see the show.

Best Party: We didn’t do any parties this year...cause sleep lololol

Best Panel: Hard to say because every time I think of one, I think of another.  Even the last one--"Psychology of Shipping"--was old-school fun.

Best thing on the Exhibit Floor: Didn't do it much except to find specific things.  I liked that I could navigate easily.

Best Food Experience inside the Convention Center: I never eat inside the Convention Center

Best Food Experience outside of the Convention Center: My friend and I tried a bunch of restaurants.  I enjoyed our annual tradition Sevilla best.

Best Offsite: I didn't go to any except the Wired Cafe.  It wasn't as good as in the past, but I did enjoy going.

Best Swag: Not a swag person.  I always leave the bag in the hotel room for the housekeepers.

Best Celeb Interaction:  A conversation I had with a network executive about a pilot I saw on his network and how much he wanted to hear my opinion.

Best Party: (1)The cocktail party I can't talk about(see above).  Also, the Ready, Party One party where Gigi Edgley and other bands played.  The music was good.

My picks:

Best Panel (Since I basically do panels all day every day, I'm going to pick best per day:
Thursday: Niko and the Sword of Light. I liked how they showed their clips; they showed the same scene a couple times at different points in the animation cycle.
Friday: Robot Chicken. My absolute favorite every year.
Saturday: The Man in the High Castle. This is a show I've seen a few times and had a mild interest in, but after the panel I was hooked. The level of detail they put into it is astounding, and it was very interesting to see how carefully and eloquently the panelists chose their words, given the subject matter.
Sunday: Scooby Doo and the Gourmet Ghost, because any Scooby Doo movie where Fred's uncle is randomly Bobby Flay is going to be awesome. Too bad he didn't show up for the panel.

Best thing on the Exhibit Floor: +1 to the Deadpool Animatronic Band

Best Panel Swag: Peter Parker: the Spectacular Spider Man comic w/ Skottie Young variant cover (from meet the Marvel Comics Editor in Chief panel)

Best Exhibit Floor Swag: Lego 2 Movie T-Shirt from WB

Best Exclusive (corporate): Hallmark Iron Giant/Ready Player One Ornament

Best Exclusive (non-corporate): Fat Rabbit Farm Iron Arachnid Babee plush

Best Coffee (outside the Convention Center): Lani Coffee, where else can you get a giant vat of 100% Kona cold brew.

Best Happy Hour (outside of the Convention Center): Garage Kitchen + Bar. 4-7 Happy Hour Daily with 51% off all appetizers and most drinks. Really great and interesting food such as Mussels & Clams, Wild Game Meatballs, etc. And great beer selection too.

Best Ramen (outside the Convention Center): I'm making this a separate category since I tried 4 ramen shops, but nothing will ever beat Underbelly.

Best Party: Funko Fundays. Although it's the only one I went to, it was pretty incredible this year. After seeing a trend towards violence in 2013 I stopped going, but they seem to have fixed that despite it being much bigger. Legit entertainment, great theme, great setup, and great giveaways.

Best Change: Closing Harbor Drive, hands down.

Best Panel: VOLTRON. Because SHIRO is GAY and I will NEVER be over this!

Best thing on the Exhibit Floor: Was not on the floor that much but honestly loved seeing the Double Dare hamster wheel.

Best Food Experience inside the Convention Center: I mean, I only ever ate Auntie Anne's...

Best Food Experience outside of the Convention Center: I went to In N Out for the first time!

Best Offsite: I only did a couple, but I really liked Project Blue Book. I thought it was really neat.

Best Swag: The WB PR people gave everyone in the Supergirl press room these SUPER NICE WB bags. I'm carrying mine now and I frigging love it.

Best Celeb Interaction: I told Katie McGrath she looked hot in the hat she was wearing and she thanked me and specifically left it on for interviews because I told her it looked nice.

Best Party: Only went to WebToon but it was AMAZING.

Ah! I missed that Marvel panel. First time I missed it in years too. I ended up going to something else...cant even remember now lol. That’s awesome swag. I won’t tell my husband. He’ll be bummed we missed on that one lol.

Have you been to Menya Ultra in town? Hands down the best. The owner owns several small ramen shops in Japan. First time we went there we joked how it was like waiting in line for a panel lol. Not friendly hours or wait times though for con-goers. Maybe if you have an extra day in town.

I haven't, but thanks for the recommendation! Looks like it's all the way up in Clairemont though so I will have to find a way up there. Maybe if I drive down I'll hit it up on the way in/out.  8)

The other ones I tried were Tajima (also very good; I actually tried their original location years ago), Beshock (respectable), and Harumama (sadly mediocre ramen.)

Best Panel: The Toys That Made Us! Their pitch video to Netflix was amazing.

Best thing on the Exhibit Floor: As a Captain American stan, I can't say anything other than Marvel's booth on the day they had all the Cap costumes out.

Best Food Experience inside the Convention Center: Nachos. They're an annual Hall H tradition!

Best Food Experience outside of the Convention Center: The Donut Bar pop-up inside the Pendy. Amazing dessert that turned into an excellent Hall H line breakfast.

Best Offsite: Purge City. We did it on Friday when they were running a Twitter promo that gave you $5 extra Purge bucks. It was supposed to be only for the first 75 people to tweet but whatever social media intern they had running the account was clearly getting overwhelmed (my sister and I tweeted within a few minutes of each other and only I got a response), so the workers inside were just giving the discount to whoever asked/showed them their tweet. Got T-shirts, multiple greeting cards, a bunch of pins, and copies of the 28th amendment. So fun and some of the merch was super creative.

Best Swag: Purge City, but, if we're talking inside the convention center, Marvel's hilarious Hall H poster. As regular Marvel H attendees, my friends and I were dying over it.

Best Celeb Interaction: The truly heroic kid who meme-d John Cena during the Bumblebee panel.

Best Party: I didn't go to any ;D
