I couldn't find a thread yet for 2022 SDCC Housing.  I checked this week for some downtown hotels and the Marriott chain has opened up reservations for the kind of announced SDCC dates for 2022, during the week of July 20 - 24. The prices, though are insanely high.  They are cancellable--I think up until the day before your reservation begins.  Yeah, like some were 1,000+ per room night. Ack!  Bring on Hotelpocalypse!

Specific hotels checked:
Marriott Marquis Hotel & Marina
Residence Inn Gaslamp
Marriott Bayfront
Westin San Diego Downtown

On Monday, the Residence Inn Gaslamp actually had rooms for SDCC week starting at $239/night if you came in on Tuesday ($399/night if your stay started on Wednesday).  My friends and I pounced and made reservations.  By Wednesday, Marriott realized what week that was, and now if you want to book those same rooms, they start at $872/night.

Unless Marriott decides “uh, yeah, we screwed up, that rate was a glitch and we’re canceling your reservation.”  It’s what I’m nervous about.

My sis has the theory that the current super high rates, is their attempt to make up for the super low ones some managed to secure.

The rates some got seem to be even lower than the SDCC rate from last year.

Some hotels have always had some rooms available to book directly that were not part of the con block — usually at 5x the usual hotel rate.  So those very high prices are not unusual.  And the low prices that some people have booked are likely due to the hotel not realizing that was Comic-Con week when the rooms went up.

I was lucky to get the Sofia for $92 a night thanks to someone posting from Booking.com.

Here are a few hotels at Mission Valley that are a little less than from SDCC 2019 pricing. Hotels.com

Crowne Plaza $211 was $236 2019

Super 8 at $86 currently

Hilton San Diego Mission Valley
$210 was $219 and $292 Concierge Level 2019

I would love to stay downtown during the con even though I'm local.  But responsibilities won't allow for it.  At $92/night though, I would have booked it just to use as a locker of stuff for those few days and then load up the car at the end.  Carrying stuff around all day and then home really limits what I can get.  I used to use a locker at a downtown gym for that, but it fills up quickly and I still have to lug all that stuff home on the trolley each night.

I've noticed really high hotel rates just about everywhere, hoping that CCI can negotiate some reasonable rates for SDCC.

Actually, I think they do.

It's a dance...

For the hotels, this convention is a dream.  It's probably the closest they get to full capacity.  They charge more than their off-peak rates, but less than they'd like to (ex.  $1000/night).

My first year (2015) I missed the hotel sale (long story).  I did look at CCI's hotel list, and booked Humphrey's on Shelter Island directly thru the hotel site a month before the Con.  They gave me the CCI rate, so there was no problem there.  As I was checking in on Wednesday (Preview Night), a couple came in looking for a vacancy.  The rate quoted to them was $100/night more than mine (I couldn't help but over hear  :) ).   I was a little surprised (inside), but the couple went thru with the reservation without skipping a beat.  Looking back on it, they may not have been in San Diego for the Con.  It might have been a situation where they had to make a last minute trip to San Diego, probably called around, and my hotel was one of the few with vacancies, and they jumped on it.

It's all what the market will bear.
