Title: Snowpiercer at Radius-TWC panel! Hall H, 3:00-4:00pm
Post by: alyssa on June 28, 2014, 01:27:13 PM
This sounds *really interesting**
I have not heard of this film before today & it's suppose to open on Aug 1.  I would love to see a panel at SDCC.  Along with Evans, Jamie Bell who played the lead in AMC's Turn is amazing. John Hurt & Ed Harris are other notables along with Tilda Swinton who played the White witch in Narnia.

Two decades into a second Ice Age, a few thousand human survivors live out their days aboard a state-of-the-art luxury train in “Snowpiercer,” an enormously ambitious, visually stunning and richly satisfying futuristic epic from the gifted Korean genre director Bong Joon-ho (“The Host,” “Memories of Murder”). A rare high-end sci-fi/fantasy pic made completely outside the studio system, and that even rarer case of an acclaimed foreign helmer working in English with no appreciable loss of his distinctive visual and storytelling style, Bong’s adaptation of French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige” reps a pricey investment ($40 million) for majority producer CJ Entertainment, but seems a downright bargain compared with the cost of forging such pics on Hollywood turf. A heavy marketing blitz combined with Bong and co-star Song Kang-ho’s considerable fan bases will drive strong biz at home (where the pic opens Aug. 1), if less than the whopping $64 million earned by “The Host” in 2006 - until recently, Korea’s all-time box office champ.

SEE MORE: From the July 30, 2013 issue of Variety

Offshore, “Snowpiercer” poses a somewhat trickier marketing challenge, given its hybrid art-movie/blockbuster nature, lack of audience familiarity with the source material, and the untested drawing power of top-billed Chris Evans outside his Captain America suit. But clever positioning along the lines of Sony’s campaign for the much less starry “District 9,” plus an assuredly warm fanboy reception, could just do the trick. The Weinstein Co., which controls the film for all English-speaking territories, has yet to announce a U.S. release date or major festival premiere.

Adapted by Bong and Kelly Masterson (“Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead”) from the 1982 graphic novel by authors Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette, “Snowpiercer” has been brought to the screen with the kind of solid narrative craftsmanship, carefully drawn characters and - above all - respect for the audience’s intelligence rarely encountered in high-concept genre cinema except when directors like James Cameron, Christopher Nolan and Guillermo del Toro are at the helm. Indeed, Bong’s film owes something to “Titanic” in its vision of a crowded passenger vessel that functions as an elaborate microcosm of society itself, complete with all the same top-down class distinctions, only here rendered tip to tail. Oh, and ice presents no obstacle for the Snowpiercer; it smashes right through great, arctic blocks of the stuff as it circumnavigates our now-frozen planet on a high-altitude railway.

The train and the track are both the inventions of Wilford, a billionaire industrialist dismissed as a crank in his day but now having the last laugh, his unseen, Oz-like presence looming large over the denizens of the Snowpiercer and inspiring a fanatical degree of devotion in his fascistic minions (led by Tilda Swinton’s hilariously grotesque Mason, with pudding-thick Yorkshire accent and upper bridge work that speaks especially ill of British dental care). We begin in the caboose, where the great, soot-faced, Dickensian masses jostle for space and rumors of incipient class revolt stir the air. It isn’t the first time the have-nots have attempted to take control of the train, but previous efforts failed because no one managed to make it all the way to the engine room. This time, things will be different, promises Curtis (Evans), the revolution’s semi-reluctant instigator, though it’s clear to see he has the makings of a sturdy prole hero.

For a while, cryptic messages have been arriving concealed in the gelatinous protein bars that serve as the stomach-churning staple of the “back of the train” diet, convincing Curtis and his wise, disabled mentor, Gilliam (John Hurt), that someone at the front of the train is spurring them on. One such message encourages them to free a Korean security expert, Namgoong Minsu (Song), from custody in the train’s prison car. But Minsu, wonderfully and inventively played by Song as an ornery, bedraggled self-preservationist, drives a hard bargain. He agrees to help only if his imprisoned daughter (Ko Asung, who also played Song’s plucky daughter in “The Host”) can tag along - and if each of them is rewarded with a fix of the hallucinogenic drug kronole for every door they manage to open. (The character, who speaks only in Korean, is able to communicate with the others via a two-way, voice-activated translation machine.)

Thus, armed with a few homemade weapons, Curtis and his band of ragtag revolutionaries (including Jamie Bell as Curtis’ loyal adjutant and Octavia Spencer as a mother searching for her missing child) begin their journey forward. At which point “Snowpiercer” sheds the close-quarters claustrophobia of the first half (which nods to such classic cinematic railway fare as “The Narrow Margin” and “Runaway Train”) in favor of a more expansive vision.

Built on gimbals on a series of interconnected soundstages at Prague’s Barrandov Studios, the train itself is a triumph of visual imagination for Bong and production designer Ondrej Nekvasil (“The Illusionist”), with each successive car revealing a new, surprising facet of this eerie, self-sustaining ecosystem: one a lush greenhouse, another a giant aquarium, yet another a Disney-on-acid classroom presided over by a creepily cheerful schoolmarm (Alison Pill). Gradually, color and light enter the heretofore monochrome frames, along with our first real glimpses of the outside world and its infinite permafrost. The further forward the rebels travel, the more decadent the surroundings get, until we arrive at the very front of the train and its blithe one-percenters, who seem to have been deposited direct from New Year’s Eve at the Overlook Hotel (a connection made explicit by Al Bowlly singing “Midnight the Stars and You” on pic’s soundtrack).

Along the way, various impediments arrive, mostly in the form of Wilford’s sizable personal militia, whose first major standoff with Curtis and company is a brilliantly staged rumble that coincides with the train’s passage through an extended tunnel, shrouding the combatants in near-total darkness. Like most of the key actions scenes, it’s executed in moodier, more impressionistic fashion than the whiplash-inducing likes of “Man of Steel” and “The Avengers.” Making a particularly menacing impression as one of Wilford and Mason’s head henchmen, without ever uttering a single word of dialogue, is Romanian thesp Vlad Ivanov (best known for playing the abortionist Mr. Bebe in “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”).

Throughout, Bong gets away with much that he almost surely would have had to curtail if working at an American studio. For starters, the pic’s pacing is more measured than most of its type, but never slack, with lots of time taken out for nuanced, character-building scenes that increase our level of emotional involvement. Important backstories are deployed only gradually, constantly shifting our sense of who the characters are and what motivates them. (As in “The Host,” too, all bets are off on who dies and who gets to live.) By the end, the film reveals itself as a surprisingly thoughtful contemplation of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man, and whether mankind is worth trying to save at all. Somber stuff, to be sure, but not without flashes of hope, and a steady infusion of Bong’s dark, quirky humor.

Among the generally impeccable craft contributions - including composer Marco Beltrami’s excitingly big, brassy original score - only the fully CGI exterior shots of the Snowpiercer itself disappoint, with an overly animated feel that lacks the texture and verisimilitude of the best modern vfx work.

There was an uproar over Harvey Weinstein buying the distribution rights to Snowpiercer and then wanting to cut scenes so it would appeal more to the US market.  I understand about 20 minutes was cut, which I think is a huge bummer.  But I've been looking forward to this movie for ages!  It opens here on July 2nd so the wait is nearly over.

Great news!  Too bad it won't receive a wide release, though.  Harvey can be a jerk sometimes.

I've seen it and it's my favourite film of the year so far. Sadly there is no UK release, had to import the blu ray from France.

If it's playing near you I highly recommended seeing it. I real thought provoking piece about class system within society.

Question for you Barb, there is a scene towards the end between the male and female Korean actors. Was it subtitled?

The blu ray and the screenings in Europe have all been without subs for that scene. So just wondering if they had been added for the US?

I see it's playing at the Gaslamp in downtown San Diego.  Do you think there's a chance it will still be playing there in three weeks?  If so, this is starting to become a habit.  Last year I had to wait to get to San Diego to see Much Ado About Nothing.

It's not like Milwaukee is a tiny market, but it's dominated by one theater chain and they can be real picky about what they choose to let us see.  Chicago area is an option, but it's an hour and a half away and traffic can be horrible.  I'd much rather wait for San Diego if it will still be there.

i spoke with a friend who works at the theatre & asked how the attendance has been, he said it's been good. He didn't know how long the move would be in showing but he thought it'd be extended to a second week.
I'd love to see it again. I'm hoping for a delux blue ray

It was part of the deal that was made in order to keep the film from being cut by 20 minutes. The division of the label that put the movie out is actually more focused on the VOD aspect of movies, which causes some chains not to even book the films.

The buzz about "Snowpiercer" prior to its release was about how Harvey Weinstein, the powerful producer, acquired U.S. distribution rights and demanded it be cut by 20 minutes. Director Bong Joon-ho refused and after much bad publicity, "Harvey Scissorhands" backed down and the 126-minute movie survived without the cuts Weinstein wanted.

The victory came at a cost, however. Weinstein released "Snowpiercer" under his Radius/TWC subsidiary, which as Ty Burr of the Boston Globe wrote, "specializes in releasing movies in innovative multiplatform arrays that include theatrical, video on demand (VOD), and other outlets. This practice severely restricts which theater chains will agree to show a film, since most exhibitors believe that digital distribution cannibalizes their customers."

I just noticed that in Friday's 3:30pm Playback it lists Snowpiercer as one of the panels being shown.

Snowpiercer isn't named in the description of the 3:00-4:00pm Hall H Radius-TWC panel, but since it's not anywhere else on the schedule they must be showing something then. From the panel description: "The panel will also reveal new scenes from upcoming RADiUS titles with some special surprises."
And it must include something other than special footage, since they can't show that in the playback! A surprise visit from the Captain, perhaps?  ;)

ive been reading Bob Lefsetz for a few years, he use to worked in the music industry
he usually has some interesting comments ...
This just dropped into my mail box with the subject line of snowpiercer

How do you get from the back of the train to the front?

Greetings from sunny Southern California where it isn't. That's right, unlike in that old Albert Hammond song, today it's RAINING! Something seen once every decade. Which is why if you bring up board games Angelenos are flummoxed, they know not about rainy days and Mondays where you stay inside and try to entertain yourself. Then again, everybody's staying inside these days. Because of TELEVISION!

Ah, the idiot box that's now a flat screen, that is your window to the world, upon which you can view not only cable and network fare, but movies on demand.

That's the new thing. Who wants to go to the theatre anyway?

Certainly not me. Because the time is never convenient, and the people keep talking and I need to study the flick, it's my lifeblood. So when I read that you could pull up "Snowpiercer" on your cable system...

I was wavering, I was thinking about going to the multiplex. But reviews were not stellar enough to push me over. But to spend $6.99 to watch at home?

So we pulled the curtains, dropped the lights, clicked the remote, and saw an allegory about America, even though Americans don't know it.

Americans are stupid. That's why there will be no revolution.

Well, let me change that, they're not stupid, they're UNEDUCATED! They might know how to use YouTube, but they know nothing about the news, nothing about economics or the human condition other than what's in front of their very eyes.

And the self-satisfied smarties are just as bad, especially the Republicans. They read the "Wall Street Journal" and think they know everything, when the truth is a very small sliver of people know what's going on, and they're running the train.

Forget all the ink about inheritances, how bozos are living on the untaxed assets of their parents. As Bob Dylan said, "he not busy being born is busy dying," and if you think money is enough, you don't know that Mike Tyson went broke. Sure, you've got to have cash, even better you've got to know the score. And almost nobody in America does, otherwise there'd be revolution.

Like Sam Brownback lowering taxes in Kansas but the aforementioned WSJ not mentioning the consequences, continuing to parade the fiction that lower taxes drive business development, when in this case not only did revenues go down, but jobs.

But that's the way the rich wanted it. The rich want so much. And they convince the poor if they just play nice and follow in their footsteps, they'll get a few crumbs.

Hogwash.

Then again, the unwashed lefties keep clamoring to bring manufacturing back, which is pure insanity, and the poor are clueless and auditioning for reality TV.

So it's after the apocalypse, and everybody left is circling the frozen earth on a train. And the poor are afraid to speak up. But someone does...

Who's going to speak up in America? We used to count on middle class college students, like Mark Rudd. But now all the middle class kids at good schools want to be upper class, they don't want to rock the boat, they just want to make sure they're not down there with the hoi polloi.

Starving artist my ass. Used to be, but now they're just starving. Because it's a full time job putting food on the table, you've got no time to be an artist.

And the poor have no awareness, they don't know their food is made from bugs. They've never eaten at Chez Panisse, they think McDonald's is good, as they get fatter and fatter and die of heart disease and the rich eat vegetables while their women become x-rays. If you think being skinny is the end all and be all, I pity you. That just means you don't understand the game. It's not what you look like, it's what's inside your brain.

That's the mantra of Silicon Valley. Of Monsanto. Read this "BusinessWeek" article to make your head spin: http://buswk.co/1pLj3h9 You may think Monsanto is the genetically-modified seedmaker but that's just a tiny sliver of their business, they're selling insurance and software and they're so far ahead of the game that if you think labeling genetically modified food is the answer, you don't know that most of their products come from breeding and that's been done for a hundred years!

Yup, that's the problem with the lefties, always speaking from their emotions, facts are irrelevant.

While the rich right wingers tilt the facts in their favor, to keep the ignorant down.

So we need a leader. But no one wants to lead. And the battle is long and the rewards aren't clearly defined. And the truth is those at the top are not as evil as we believe them to be. They've got good qualities, it's just that these people are myopic, believing they know what's good for everybody when they know nobody other than themselves.

And this is all in "Snowpiercer," which everyone would know about except a major studio doesn't want to risk dollars promoting it, so it only opened in eight theatres and is now on VOD. Maybe it'll have an impact on Netflix, when it finally reaches there. You see art lives on forever, but very little is art.

I thought "Snowpiercer" was an action flick. And it was for the first third, but then it raised the big questions, the ones the musicians used to ask in the sixties, before selling out became the mantra and the rich kept eviscerating the safety net and we saw poor on poor crime. Yup, while you're battling each other, the rich are unreachable, behind walls, flying private.

But no one will tell you this, because otherwise you'll lose hope.

But what we need is true hope. Leaders we can believe in.

And artists and leaders always go side by side.

But only in the movies. That's right, a Korean director adapted "Snowpiercer" from a graphic novel and all we know about that far-away country is Samsung, as if our mobile phones will save the world.

But they won't. We've got to save ourselves.

Which is why all those Ivy League graduates are not becoming ski bums, are not becoming teachers, but are going into finance so they can not only get ahead, but interact with others who understand the game.

The game? It's rigged against you. The American Dream is kaput. You cannot get ahead, that's just a fiction those who've already got theirs are spreading, having you believe if you just push a little harder, you'll break through.

But the truth is we live in an information age. And he who knows most wins.

So surf all the porn you want, read the gossip columns. That's exactly how the owners of this country want you, distracted. Because if you understood what was really going on, you'd rally the troops and start moving forward, start battling the resistance, move your way from the back to the front.

But you've got no idea where the front is.

Never mind how to get there.

P.S. "Snowpiercer" got a limited release because the director wouldn't agree to Harvey Weinstein's edict that twenty minutes be cut and opening and closing monologues be added. But unlike the musicians, director Bong Joon-ho said no. Art is not about compromising, that's BUSINESS!

The studio seems to want to do as little as possible to promote this film.

This movie is really amazing, I did not really expect much going in but I loved every moment of it. The first second they really draw you in with the story (despite giving you this amazing backstory, it builds up) and the visuals are something else entirely — watch it.

OSCARS: ‘Snowpiercer’ Becomes First DVD Screener Sent To Academy Voters

http://deadline.com/2014/08/snowpiercer-oscars-dvd-screener-motion-picture-academy-voters-825266/

Emmy season ended just last night, and now the six-month-long Oscar season begins in earnest this week with the Fall festival trifecta of Venice, Telluride and then next week, Toronto. And tonight the motion picture Academy’s Board Of Governors will be voting on recipients of this Snowpierceryear’s Governors Awards Honorary Oscars which will be handed out on November 8th. And the Emmy body may still be warm but Oscar campaigners seem to be jumping into the fray even earlier than usual with the first official awards screener going out to all members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Oscar voters should be receiving their special copy of Radius/TWC’s  Snowpiercer in their mailboxes by tomorrow.

Director Bong Joon Ho’s futuristic snowpiercer 2post-apocalyptic thriller about the last of humanity aboard a special class-conscious train that travels the globe is the first to be sent this season. Last year Roadside Attractions took that honor with Mud on September 21st but it didn’t result in any nominations. Radius clearly wanted to get out in front on this film which opened the Los Angeles Film Festival in June and has performed well in theaters, and especially VOD. It also has been blessed by critics with a sterling 95% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes. That’s just under critical darling and early Oscar contender, Boyhood. Radius is suggesting numerous categories in which they believe the film can compete including several below the line contests as well as Director, Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Tilda Swinton’s wild turn. Although on the surface the film doesn’t look like obvious Oscar fodder, strong support in critics awards contests could propel it forward.

keep on keepin onRadius took an Oscar earlier this year for its musical documentary, Twenty Feet From Stardom. They plan to be a player in that arena also with a new musical documentary, Keep On Keepin’ On about the relationship between jazz great Clark Terry and a young blind musician he’s mentoring.  I actually caught it at producer Quincy Jones’ Bel Air home last week and it’s easily the kind of moving and gripping doc that voters seem to be gravitating toward in recent races (ie Searching For Sugar Man, Twenty Feet From Stardom).  Radius is likely to have at least one other docu contending as well.  For now they are jumping right into the fray with Snowpiercer and hoping being first gains them some traction in what promises to be a very crowded race.

"Anchor Bay and Starz have finally officially announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of Bong Joon Ho’s science fiction/actioner Snowpiercer on 10/21 (SRP $29.99 and $24.98). The film stars Chris Evans, Song Kang Ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ewen Bremner, John Hurt, and Ed Harris. We’ve seen it here at The Bits; it’s pretty terrific.

Both versions will include the director’s proper 126-minute cut, a critics commentary, and a bonus disc that adds 5 featurettes (The Birth of Snowpiercer, The Characters, Chris Evans & Tilda Swinton on Snowpiercer, The Train Brought to Life: Behind the Scenes of a Special Screening, and Transperceneige: From the Blank Page to the Black Screen), an animated prologue, and concept art galleries."

Wondering if this prologue's  (on the bonus disc, not likely branched to the film) actually part of the original comic?

The Blu Ray I got from France came with a short segment of the comic book.
So could be the same.

The DVD set ($16.99) may actually be the two disc set pictured.  The box art looks similar, with a sticker, though wish that came with UV.
