Grammy-winning country singer Naomi Judd passed away.  She was 76.  She had teamed up with her daughter Wynnona in a duet called The Judds and is also the mother of actress Ashley Judd.

He was a GOAT, and by all accounts one of the warmest, nicest in the industry. Another great who left an incredible legacy that will influence generations

He will be missed. His wife wrote how much he loved free Comic Book Day so it was very fitting he passed on that day. I remember seeing him at sdcc and always had a smile. His memorial is going to be at Mega Con in Orlando later this month.

I never appreciated the art from Adams or Perez until much later in life, after I got over following just the flashy “extreme” artists. They don’t make artists like they used to.

I do hope there is some kind of memorial at SDCC. Maybe dedicate a booth space to them. Or have some huge banner or wall with their art.

Way back in the seventies, when I was 10 years old, my dad took me to a Con (on the east coast). We went to a panel about “how to draw comics,” run by George Pérez. Almost half a century later, I still can remember how cool George was, and still have his “Accent on the first e” sketchbook he sold at that show.

One of my favorite bands.  Best showing was during their Union Tour, saw them in the round in Atlantic City.  The Union Tour was a tour of all the peeps that were a member of the band at any one time, and it was a hella long show.  During the intermission, White and Bruford (other drummer) did was what I swear was a 30 minute drums-only set...one of the best shows I saw.

As I've gotten older, my perception of age has naturally radically shifted.  Nowadays, when a celebrity dies I gauge "old"/age as 1) were they older than my father-in-law (my closest oldest relative) and 2) were they younger than my parents (relatively young at really early 70's).  Ray Liotta was younger than my parents, which in my mind feels too young to die of 'old age.'  I first saw him in FIELD OF DREAMS when it was in theaters in the late 80's, and then again very soon after in his integral role of the real-life mob associate-turned-rat Henry Hill in the masterpiece GOODFELLAS.  GOODFELLAS came out when I was a freshman in HS, and when I was a youngin' I was not exactly on the straight-and-narrow.  While I was definitely doing nothing on the scale of any crimes in GOODFELLAS, I of course pulled shenanigans at school and home, as well as minor illegalities here and there.  GOODFELLAS, through Liota's narration early on (when he got in trouble for skipping school for weeks), taught me "we all take a beating sometimes."  It was an odd enlightenment for me that was a revelation that I'll probably get away with more than I get in trouble for and that sometimes I just have to own up to consequences and take it: as I've gotten older that meaning has shifted a bit to "sometimes crappy things happen and I just have to roll with it, improve/fix what I can & push others to fix what I can't.

Ray Liota fans who mostly know GOODFELLAS and FIELD OF DREAMS should check out COP LAND, streaming on HBO Max (IIRC) right now.  REALLY brilliant Stallone-starring role about a small New Jersey sheriff (Stallone) who is the sheriff of a town populated almost exclusively by NYPD.  There is a bit of NYPD corruption involved, as well as an officer-involved shooting/murder where Stallone is caught in the middle of protecting fellow cops vs doing the right thing.  The movie also stars Harvey Keitel, Robert De Niro, Michael Rappaport, Robert Patrick and others.  It was written by James Mangold, kinda known around here as co-writing & directing LOGAN, WALK THE LINE, and the upcoming INDIANA JONES V (among some other really good films).  Awesome film.

Liotta's film debut, SOMETHING WILD is also really good, with a great performance that hints at a stellar career.  His recent MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK Sporanos prequel also had a real solid Liotta performance as two roles/twins.
