Please use this thread for discussion of Comic-Con 2016's general badge sale.
Thank you! ^__^d
-
yes! sadly i can't participate in the pre registration because 2016 is hopefully my first time there!
u guys know when i can expect the registration for this formed groups?! just that i know when i should care about it!
try to be well prepared.
also with flights and stuff...
already have restless nights for an event that will happen in 1 year
-
prep is the best offense
my complete guess is that gen reg will happen in early 2016
There's a 'how to' thread for '16 which has the basis steps- http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=2251.0

I too am hoping to go to SDCC for the first time this year! That how to thread is very helpful thank you for posting it :)
-
I'll probably be going for this since I'm up for verification for press. I'd rather not assume I'm going to get it, not get it, and have no tickets. So always better to have a backup!

Definitely true. We're happy to help, Bettie!

Is it too early to see about joining a buying group?

Is it too early to see about joining a buying group?
For open registration, yes. We're going to get through pre-registration before we start worrying about open registration. Besides the issue of having multiple sales events, we also need to know the results of pre-registration, so we know which of those people will be participating in open registration.

I was wondering the same thing so thank you for the answer! About when can we expect the groups for open registration to start forming? And how exactly does the group thing work?
Thanks in advance!
-
I believe we'll start forming groups for gen-reg mid-nov. That's up to the group leader of the groups TJ tho....lol
In general & i'm sure tj will add a great many details but basically a group usually consists of 30-50 people. If someone get in to the buying room they buy for themselves & others on the list.
there's a great many variations, due to folks also buying for family/friends, priority of buying etc. All of those details are left up to the group leader. I do highly recommend taking care of the group leader first since without him/her the group would not be in existence.
i suspect we'll be forming new groups due to the current 5-6 groups being close to capacity. We are always on the lookout for new group leaders!

Wow 30-50 people per group!? That has to be pretty expensive to buy for everyone. But I'd imagine each leader has a system of some sort. Cool!
Thank you for the info :)
-
Okay, just to be clear, you are not expected to buy 30-50 badges!
Anyone who is selected in the badge-buying lottery is allowed to buy 3 badges. This means that people may have 'extra buying slots'. If this happens, they will buy for someone else in the group.
If someone gets to the front of the line before you do and buys you a badge, you will still stay in the sale, and then if you end up at the buying screen, you can buy for 3 more people in the group who do not yet have badges. So at most you would be buying 3 badges for others. Those people would pay you pretty quickly, usually via Paypal.
Each *group* has 30-50 people (depends on the group leader and how many they feel they can handle). That means 30-50 people trying to get buying slots. If 1/3 of those people make it into the buying room, then everyone has badges.
For sure we will wait until after pre-registration to form groups for open registration. Shortly after pre-registration, I will contact the group leaders and see if they're willing to continue their groups, or find new leaders if they have to relinquish their duties. At that point, we'll figure out if any of the groups have extra space, and if not, call for volunteers to start a new group.
However, if there is anyone here now who is eager for open registration who wants to start a new group, please let me know. We provide help behind the scenes to give you advice and assist you in setup of the group. We can open your group for new members once pre-registration is over.
-
Thanks for clearing that up! I knew there was a limit on how many badges any one person could buy, just didn't know the specific number.
-

I should clarify that it has been 3 badges per person for the past few sales, but CCI is able to change this at any time. I have seen it as low as 2 and as high as 6 in the past. Presumably CCI has 'settled' on 3, but there's no guarantee of this until CCI announces the rules for each specific sale.

I gotcha. Thank you :)

If it is 3 slots this year like last year, that is one thing to prepare for when participating in a buying group. Ensure there is room on your credit card or debit card for buying full memberships for 3 people. I dont recall last year's prices, but just something to think about.

I'm going to jumping into this as well (assuming the pre-reg gods are kind to me)...my niece turns 16 and she's been hounding me for the past couple years that I've been going to take her as well...so I gotta try and help to get her a ticket...we'll see how that goes. Be a cool birthday gift for her to take her to SDCC.
-
Drat, and my 16 year old won't be at con next year.... They could have ditched us the responsible ones.....
-
Fingers crossed here for that one Alyssa...funny thing is one of her schoolteachers went last year, so it seemed like everyone else but her was going...so here's to hoping that I can get her a ticket...it'd be a blast if I got her to go.

It's important that the young geeks learn that there's a tribe out there for them.

Do you live close by? Even if she doesn't get a badge, she could still enjoy the events in the Gaslamp and surrounding area.
Hopefully though, working with a buying group, you'll be able to get her a badge. My 15 year old has been going to SDCC for a number of years now, and she loves it!

I've heard that there is a lot of cool things around so my friend and I will be going down to SD even if we don't get badges. Already got the hotel booked and everything!

i agree that its still worth going to San Diego during the con even if you aren't lucky enough to get tickets - my family and i came from the UK this year and had a great time - but really, really want to get tickets for 2016 because of it

Welcome to the forums, Smonty! Joining the community as an actual forum member is great start for getting information about attending San Diego Comic-Con in 2016. I hope you're having a good time at NYCC so far!
Here's our "Introduction/Welcome" thread if you want to tell us a little bit more about yourself:

This is good to hear as I'm in San Diego for the week of SDCC any way so reassuring to know there will be things to do even if I don't get a ticket!
-
I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this and that's its a no, stay well clear and that the only way to get a badge for SDCC is via the general open registration... but I'll ask any way!
I've seen the chance to purchase packages (at over priced rates) including badges for SDCC listed on various ticket websites. I assume these are not legit and risk potentially not being honored so stay well clear of?
Note: That verification question Finish the name, Stan gets me every time... I keep writing Stan Smith first! D'oh too much American Dad.

You are correct in that the overpriced rates on auction websites and the like are illegitimate and ill-advised ways to obtain Comic-Con badges. Those interactions can be risky and even malicious scams. CCI does not allow transfers or reselling of their badges (it's listed in their registration policies). It's always better to try and purchase badges directly from CCI's official registration vendor, EPIC, instead of a third-party individual seller.
However, the best part about this forum community is that we help each other. Sometime early next year, there will be a thread specifically created for general (open) registration buying groups for forum members to work together to purchase badges.
Don't give up hope just yet! There is still a chance.
Here's a quick summary of what the buying groups are:

Great thanks Zero.
Anytime, highgiant! You're welcome. ^__^d Definitely keep a lookout for the general registration buying group threads. Some of the currently existing groups might have room to take in a few new members at that time, and sometimes, brand-new groups are formed if there is someone willing to act as a group leader. You never know.

Normally, we start to talk open registration (seriously, obviously we're talking about registration all of the time) as soon as pre-registration is over.

First, congrats to those who got badges today! Those that didn't or didn't get all the days, try for open reg!
Speaking of which, for me, after reading the above posts, just to be safe until the right thread is created, I would like to join a buying group for open reg, if that is still possible. :)

We will be announcing the setup for general/open registration buying groups toward the end of the month. You are certain here at the right place and time to join a buying group for open registration!
-
i really want to join a buying group - have booked flights and hotel (coming from UK) - the flights are non refundable, so will be a long week hanging about if i dont get tickets again this year

I can guarantee that there will be tons of stuff to do outside of the convention center (and those won't require a Comic-Con badge either). Prime examples include Nerdist as well as NerdHQ panels and exhibits at Petco Park. Even if you manage to only get a few days for the convention during the general registration sale, there are many things to see and experience.
For now, don't give up hope just yet!
With that said, information about general registration buying groups will be forthcoming!
Right now, my recommendation is to take this opportunity to get to know your fellow forum members by posting and interacting with others on the forums. By doing this, you'll gain a level of trust with each other that will inevitably help out in these buying groups in the long run. With that trust, you'll know that there are people you can count on for pre-registration or general registration in the future.
(Lurkers and newbies, I'm talking to you! ;p)

great stuff, thanks
my family and i came to San Diego this year during SDCC as part of a 3 week road trip and had the best time ever - even my wife, who really isnt into that sort of thing, loved the activities on the streets and the general feel of San Diego
my son and i did Walker Stalker, and the walking dead escape and generally hung out around the convention area - made us want more....
we attend comic cons in the UK, and RTX in Austin, but have decided to give those up since SDCC, as they seem tame now

Actually, just to make a slight correction, I am hoping to make announcements about buying groups for open registration at the end of this month. Right now all of the group leaders are getting organized and checking their status, but I will open things up soon, and definitely well before Christmas!

Member ID updated today. The Registration Info tab for Preregistration Attendees now shows info for Member ID, Last Name, and Membership Type only. Bye bye went the code from the previous sale.
Also, the ADDRESS / PHONE, EMAIL, (https://secure2.comic-con.org/memberid/layout/btn_edit_sm.jpg) are open for changes in the My Account tab.

I just hope its not the first weekend in Feb, any other weekend would be perfect for me :)
First weekend in Feb I could do but I'm visiting a friend in Edinburgh that weekend so would need to explain to her why we have to hang out at home for a few hours instead of being out sight seeing :P

Makes sense. Spring starts late March and we are all thinking Open Reg will be in February...and then...HOTEL HELL in March.

Oh ouch, it FINALLY occurred to me that I'm scheduled to be in the law library every Saturday through April 2nd from 8am-12:30pm. So of course this means I most likely won't be available to do General Reg myself or micromanage my group through it. If I'm lucky, I'll just be doing research vaguely at my leisure and will be online for it, kind of.
I guess the day it happens it'll be time to see if my group sinks or swims without me there breathing down their necks >.>

Hopefully you can work it out, Iris! I feel your pain.

Hmmmm, just around the corner, hey? Sounding like Feb. 20th but we shall see. :) Already have my code printed and ready to go!
-
FWIW yesterday after the Member ID system re-opened after "maintenance" I tried to set up a new Member ID for a friend and when I did it said he was NOT eligible for General Registration 2016.
So essentially everything is locked in/ready to go: my guess is next weekend
-
[member=1527]dolphina[/member] had the same thing happen to her last night. thanks for the data point !
it does indeed seem as tho the system is closed for gen reg
-
OMG! Something terrible happened! A friend of mine registered for a MemberID a MONTH back!
For some reason, she is NOT eligible for 2016 Open Registration! What could have happened? Is this a glitch?
I sent email to Comic-Con hoping for an answer! This is terrible!

That's definitely unusual. A month ago would have been well in the cut-off range for eligible Member IDs for general registration, especially since they updated the system yesterday.
I hope you get a fast and positive reply from CCI. Please keep us updated.

I know! This is catastrophic because we would be sharing a room! (Since dollar skyrocketed, for us Mexicans it literally now costs double to visit the US, in comparison to last year).
So, if this is permanent, I'm going to have to ask for a refund on my 4 day passes. Just horrible.
Have you heard of CC making an exception in these cases?
-
Luthien, explain the issue to CCI. Perhaps forward them a copy of the confirmation email from the day your friend made the account? When there is a genuine mistake, CCI, is usually very good about helping.
-
I already did that, praying for a hopeful reply. O:-)

It's official!!! Feb 20th @ 9am PT!!!
http://www.comic-con.org/cci/purchase-badges
I'M SO EXCITED!
Edit: There appears to be conflicting times posted on their website. One page says 9am PT and another says both 8am AND 9am PT. Hopefully will be corrected soon. Either way, at least we have a DATE!
Edit again: Get into Waiting Room starting at 8am PT, before 9am PT! Calendar marked!

LET'S GET IT ON!!

For reference:
"Comic-Con 2016 badges will go on sale Saturday, February 20, during Open Registration! The EPIC waiting room will open for registration code authorization at 8:00 AM Pacific Standard Time (PST), and badges will go on sale shortly after 8:00 AM PST. We encourage you to read all of the important information below."
Note: There is a typo, since the sale will start at 9:00 AM.

How much confusion are they going to cause with this? Even though they got it right below that...

I noticed that as well, and was wondering how much confusion that was going to cause. At least it didn't say 10am PT...
-
Two things
1) Is it unusual that CCI would announce this far in advance?
2) Let chaos reign.
-
HOLY SMOKES IT'S TIME! :D

Seriously! Why make it so convoluted? haha
They updated the message, it makes more sense now:

MUCH better!

Yeah, I have a page monitor running on the post and they have updated it 3 times already. Nothing like proof-reading your content AFTER it's live...smh.

ITS HAPPENING!!! Just got the email and I kind of freaked out!

So, CC answered: they forgot to confirm their email addresses. They barely know english, I was going to help them get their badges on Open Registration since I already had mine, but I trusted them they could create a simple account.
I feel so heartbroken since I am going to have to ask for a refund since there is no way I can afford a hotel room by myself. Comic-Con organization told me it was a no-go, so I guess they don't make exceptions, even for honest mistakes. :(
I wish you all good luck on Open Reg, tho. May the odds be ever in your favor.

I'm sorry for the bad news, Luthien. I'm glad that they were able to get back to you so quickly though.
You could always trying sharing a room with a few members on the forum. We do have a room sharing thread for Comic-Con: http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5654.0
There will be a lot more posts in that thread as it gets closer to Comic-Con, so it may be of interest to you. ^__~

Don't give up! there will be plenty of people looking for roommates!!
My control freak tendencies is sort of freaking out since I can't be with my group next Saturday because of work. 3 of us have badges, but our group is going to fill in days for everyone else. I just am freaking out that I can't physically be there. The BF will use my login on a separate computer though.

It is! And for them to lock it this early too.. I normally wouldn't even notice, but one of my friends lucked out by trying to create a member ID just yesterday during maintenance... ugh
-
I'm going to take the global moderator's prerogative of merging this thread into the SDCC 2016 General Registration Discussion Thread, since it's the same topic (and it would provide a more centralized area for discussion).

Luthien, I am sorry to hear that. I can understand why CCI isn't making an exception, but then I also understand why this happened to your friend.
I agree with other posters: there are plenty of room shares available. If you want a roommate, you should be able to find one here.

Note the following on the CCI Member ID page. They've made an announcement notification.
https://secure2.comic-con.org/memberid/index.php
"I M P O R T A N T !
The Comic-Con Member ID system is temporarily closed for account changes for eligible attendees.
The Member ID system will reopen for changes sometime after Open Registration is complete. You may still create a new account or log in to your existing account to view your registration code.
All Member ID accounts created after February 11, 2016 at 9:30 AM Pacific Time
will not be eligible to participate in Comic-Con 2016 Open Registration.

interesting...when did they cut off new account eligibility last year, was it 48 hrs?

interesting...when did they cut off new account eligibility last year, was it 48 hrs?
Based on general registration for Comic-Con 2015, it was about a week before the actual sale that they changed the Member ID system for new accounts to be ineligible for the sale. Last year, the general registration sale was February 21st, and any accounts made after February 13, 2015 at 2:30 PM Pacific Time were not eligible to participate.
(Ah-ha! I knew these announcement threads would be helpful!)

Aw, thank you. <3 (And... this is why people should join the forums. Accurate and archived information is one of our prime advantages.)
For those of you who are interested, here's a brief summary of the dates for general badge sales and resales in previous years:
*This list does not include pre-registration dates.*
In 2011, it was on November 1st, 2010. (They started it really early compared to the last few years, but then there were a lot of crashes on the EPIC website at the time, and they suspended and postponed badge sales to several dates from November through mid-December; they also did a few test runs during that time as well. There was a sale for single-day passes on June 30th, 2011 after that though.)
In 2012, it was on March 3rd. (This is not counting the "second chance" sale date of March 27th and resale date of May 31st.)
In 2013, it was on February 16th. (This is not counting the resale "lottery" date that was only valid for residents of the U.S. and Canada. This resale lottery was held on June 18th.)
In 2014, it was on March 15th. (There was no resale in 2014.)
In 2015, it was on February 21st. (There was no resale in 2015.)
In 2016, it will be February 20th.

I feel your pain. I'm freaking out because I can't lead my group during the sale either. I have to be on campus in the law library. My anxiety has shot through the roof.
-
My anxiety has shot through the roof
Seriously. its going to hurt. I'll be at an offsite work event dependent on hotel wireless and at the whim of attendees and their schedule. So the only thing I can do is try to monitor our FB group chat. UGGGGH.
-
I feel your pain, I have a half marathon that morning and not being a fast runner I know I'm not going to be able to sign in at that time. Thankfully I have friends who are going to help me and another friend try to get badges but it still hurts not being able to help out myself.. aside from losing that one body in the waiting room.
Its so very tempting to try on my phone but I know that wouldn't go well, haha.
-
We've got enough computers that my boyfriend can get me logged into the waiting room...so at least they don't loose that...buuuuut...sometimes they need to be wrangled or herded...you know..?
-
As a reminder, please take this time to go into your Member ID account and get your registration code. In the event that you can't access your Member ID account on the day of the sale or if you don't get the notification e-mail with your registration code in time, at least you'll already have it as a back-up.
^__^d In the meantime, about one week to go, everyone...

Have everyone check in at a specific time before the sale. Make sure everyone is present and accounted for, and provide reminders about it all week long to really nail that information in.
That might help, ha ha. ^__~

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but is it possible to use multiple browsers on one computer for different member ids/codes? Unfortunately I'm the only one in my group that will be available on Saturday and I've never had to deal with trying to get more than 2 badges before.... I read the faqs for buying, but they didn't clear much up because they use device and browser at different times for the same thing

Yes, I've done this on one computer using a Safari browser for one registration code and Chrome for a different one. You can't use two of the same browsers at the same time, though.

Awesome. Thanks! That's what I thought but I figured I should make sure :)

I need some advice. My daughter did not receive her open registration email. I logged into her Member ID account and it says at the top " X NO CCI'16 Attendee Open Reg"
This makes no sense. Her Member ID account is over 2 years old. And we used her account during previous attendee pre-registration where I purchased Sunday badges for everyone.
I know I need to contact Comic Con about this, but all I can find is a generic web form. Does anyone have any more specific contact information or direct customer service support?
Do they accept phone calls?
Thanks for any help.

You can e-mail them directly at to get in touch with the Attendee Registration Department.
I believe this is their phone number:
Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
Just as quick tip:
It might be better to use e-mail versus phone so that you'll have a documented account of their replies to you.

During The first Registration three of our group got all four days plus preview...one of our group got completely shut out. I was under the impression that the 3 of us would still be able to log in to try and help him get a ticket, but then I saw the note that if you had all days plus preview, you are not eligible to buy any badges. I logged on just to double check, and sure enough, I'm not eligible to help him.
Has this always been the rule? I feel awful that he is now at reduced odds to get a ticket. :(

Yes, that has always been the rule under the current system. Your member ID is only eligible for the sale if you are missing at least one day.
Are you in a buying group? If so you can contact your group leader to see if anyone else in the group has codes they can't use (if they don't have enough devices/browsers).

No. You have to be in the waiting room before 9am PST then the system lets people in at random.

Forgive me if this has already been asked and answered, but if someone buys a badge through general registration and then ends up not going at the last minute, are they eligible for pre-reg next year? Or does the badge have to be activated somehow?
-
We assume the badge will need to be activated at the con to enable that person to be eligible for sdcc pre-reg in 2017.
We don't know exactly how things will work - however
-
I'm wondering if it'll be similar to the NYCC tap in/tap out system. What do you think, Alyssa?
-
Forgive me if this has already been asked and answered, but if someone buys a badge through general registration and then ends up not going at the last minute, are they eligible for pre-reg next year? Or does the badge have to be activated somehow?
Up until this year, you needed to pick up your badge in person to get a registration code to be able to participate in pre-registration. We don't know for certain how that will change with the new RFID badges sent in the mail, but the assumption (as stated above) is that the badge will somehow have to be activated at the con.
-
My one question is that I wonder if we all won't be let in at the same time so anyone who has their badges sent in the mail can just go straight up to the lines in Sails Pavilion and what not while anyone who has to get them onsite has to wait. How will that work?
-
just got done with the gen reg show, going over the sale- & what to expect
we also go over media- tv & deadpool ;)

As someone who was in this terrible situation last year, I was not eligible this time around for pre-reg. :(
Luckily, I was only able to acquire one day in 2015, so financially it wasn't that devastating .. but I'm still left with a deep sadness from the whole last minute housing crisis/not being able to attend SDCC.
I'm assuming that the badges will need to somehow be activated this year as well...
-
We assume the badge will need to be activated at the con
CCI can make a badge like the SDCC hotel keys. The badge would time out after a day and you'd have to go to a desk to get the badge re-activated!
-
My one question is that I wonder if we all won't be let in at the same time so anyone who has their badges sent in the mail can just go straight up to the lines in Sails Pavilion and what not while anyone who has to get them onsite has to wait. How will that work?
They'll probably have separate booths for badge activation and badge pick-up. My educated guess is that they'll have a big, combined line for Registration in general but then when you're close to the entrance of the Sails Pavilion, they ask people to split up according to which booth or station they need.
All in all, CCI will likely provide us more information about this as it gets closer to the convention.
-

That is an interesting logistical question. Theoretically an those living in the US would have a "quicker" time as we will get badges mailed to us while those living outside US will have to wait in line to register.
That being said, if there is some sort of "registration" line to activate badges, it will likely be not-much-quicker than the standard lines to get badges. In my 15+ years of going to SDCCI I've always been amazed at how quickly badge pick-up routinely is: it's like the one aspect of attending Comic-Con that runs extremely smooth (except for picking up pre-bought exclusives last year w/absolutely zero lines or waiting). If there are activation lines, this will help even things out, depending on the logistics CCI employs.

I never thought about having to wait in line to activate the badge; I guess it does make sense, but it seems goofy (and not worth CCI paying extra shipping costs IMO) if having these badges does not eliminate waiting in line on the first day you attend to activate your badge, and thus saving zero time (or at least minimal). If everyone STILL has to wait in a Registration line upon arrival, it would seem to make more sense for CCI to just require EVERYONE picks up their badge on site instead of mailing them out to those living in the US.
I guess at this point it's pointless to complain about pure speculation. I'll definitely be curious to see how this seemingly radical logistical change affects things, and will be anxiously awaiting CCI's new policy update to us!
Also, at this point I'm already stupid excited about July 2016: MLB All-Star game, Sting/Peter Gabriel at the Hollywood Bowl, and week of Comic-Con, all within 14 days!!

"Comic-Con will ship all badges purchased during a registration session to the buyer only."
If someone else registers me through their member ID/login code, but my credit card and billing address is used for the payment method, who is considered the "buyer"? Me, since it was my CC or the other person since it was their member ID that technically bought it? I assume it'd be the other person, but looking for concrete confirmation (I've also shot a note over to SDCC).

The buyer is the Member ID that was first used to enter the registration system and who added your Member ID to their session to get you a badge. The name under the credit card used to make the purchase is not considered the buyer--that's just "payment information."
Hope that helps!

you are also given the chance to edit the shipping address as the buyer. So you can have it sent anywhere in the USA.
It was in the tucan badge purchase blog. I couldn't find it quickly, but I would try to find it to verify

Yellow:
Thank you for your patience while we try to move you quickly to a registration session. If your shipping address changes after you purchase a badge today, you will have a chance to update it before we ship!
I checked the Toucan blog, but I didn't find anything with that type of wording, like that of the yellow status bar message.
Hope this helps.

I was lucky to get the situation sorted out at work...so I have one question. How early should I have my computers set up for the waiting room? I was thinking 2 hours.

They let people start entering the waiting room at 8:00 AM PST, and registration starts at 9:00 AM PST. Just make sure you're logged in (and you entered your registration code to gain access to the waiting room) between those two times, and you'll be fine. ^__^d
You can be up and ready earlier than 8:00 AM PST, but the waiting room won't be open yet.

Q: I did not update my address prior to the sale. Now that you are mailing out badges, what should I do?
A: During the check out process, you will have the opportunity to enter your desired shipping address. All badges purchased during your registration session will be shipped to the address that you enter during check out, not the address on your Comic-Con Member ID account. You should still update your address on your Member ID account once the sale is over to ensure you get important post mail correspondence from Comic-Con.

Q: I usually go to San Diego a week before Comic-Con to vacation with my family, how far in advance will you be shipping badges?
A: The exact badge shipping time frame is still in development, but we hope to ship badges about 4 weeks prior to Comic-Con 2016. During check out, make sure to enter a shipping address that would be valid for you in June 2016.
-
That's the thing. The information available is slightly conflicting. I found the same things on my research about this as well, and I looked through all of the official FAQs and blog posts, in addition to whatever we have archived on the forums. The FAQs say that the shipping address should be entered correctly and be valid for June 2016, yet that single yellow status bar message indicated that they would confirm the shipping address prior to actual shipping.
I'm still of the impression that they'll ask us to confirm the shipping addresses before shipping, however. I think I'll e-mail CCI to see what they say about this... Hm.
(Thanks for the review, Sam!)

I have a question about the lost and stolen badge policy. If the buyer of a group mails out the badges to everyone and someone doesn't receive it, either it's lost in the mail or whatever, would that person just pick up a replacement badge at the event itself using the original buyer's barcode and email? Or would the "buyer" have to go on that person's behalf since the badge was bought under the buyer's name and address?
The official policy that I can find on the site's FAQ is conflicting too:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Q: What if my badge is lost in the mail or stolen?
A: As mentioned previously, RFID technology will allow us to “turn off” your lost or stolen badge and issue you a new one when you arrive onsite. The badge that was lost or stolen will not be valid for entry to Comic-Con.
but ALSO says
Q: I am working with a buying group, how does Comic-Con ensure that my buyer gives my badge to me and doesn’t keep my money and badge?
A: Comic-Con will ship all badges purchased during a registration session to the buyer only. If the buyer does not give you your badge, Comic-Con is unable to intervene on your behalf or send you a new badge. Make sure that you personally know and trust the people you are working with in a buying group.
http://www.comic-con.org/toucan/comic-con-2016-attendee-preregistration-faq-part-deux
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So worst scenario and if something goes wrong and the buyer just shuts off all contact just a month before SDCC, would everyone in the group be out of badges? Or can they just get a replacement using the original barcode and email onsite using the lost/stolen badge policy? The second policy says they won't replace it, yet the first policy states they can simply replace any lost badges. This is a bit confusing.

Will do, Sam. I'll try to be as comprehensive about my questions in my e-mail to CCI.
Indeed, the address listed under a person's Member ID is not the same as the shipping address entered in during checkout for registration sale, and they've mentioned this a few times in the FAQs. *sighs* The information is all over the place.

There's been a lot of confusion about how this will go, especially since all information available usually contradicts the other.
Would you like to e-mail CCI (basically the same things that you mentioned here with references to the FAQs) and let us know what they say when they get back you? ^__^
I'll take care of the "shipping address contradictions" e-mail. If we can contact them and point out these contradictions, the faster they can figure out in-house, decide which policies they want to follow, and then clarify for attendees.

I think with the RFID being incorporated into the badges this year they can just cancel the lost one and issue a new badge on the day. But that's me just theorizing

Thanks Zero and nedoeht3705. To be safe I'll contact them and see how it goes and then post their response here.

Theoretically, that's possible, but I think people are concerned about how they'll implement the "lost" or "missing" badge policy. If the buyer says he shipped it to you but you didn't receive it, how will CCI resolve that? Does that count as a "lost" badge? Will they issue you a new badge on-site?
As a few of us have already mentioned previously, the information available is contradictory: In one case, yes, they'll replace the badge if you didn't get it from the buyer properly. In another case, no, they won't replace the badge, and you're supposed to trust the buyer if you're working in a buying group.

I'm also thinking worst case scenario. Even if the buyer is 100% trustworthy, and if something happens that the buyer is somehow unable to be contacted during the timeframe tickets are being delivered, like family emergency, evicted, moving house, etc. Also in the instance if the buyer happens to be international and somehow doesn't show up at the pick up area. Nothing malicious but just bad luck and circumstances, would everybody in the group suffer as a consequence. Just trying to cover for any potential dramas.

1. As it stands now, Badges will mail out after the Refund date.
2. After the pre-registration sale, each person in the group got a separate barcode email http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5652.0 with their own Name, Barcode, Confirmation Number, and Attendee Badge Info. In the past, you needed that barcode to get a replacement. Save that barcode email!

"moved" is covered as undeliverable
From http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5652.0 Comic-Con 2016 Badge Confirmation E-mail (General Content)
"The name on your badge must match your photo ID when you arrive onsite."
"BADGE DELIVERY/PICK-UP:
Specific details regarding badge delivery will be sent to you at a later date. All badges in your order will be shipped directly to the buyer's address. We anticipate that badges will be sent out 3-4 weeks prior to Preview Night, July 20, 2016. Badges not delivered for any reason (lost/stolen/forgot/dog scared the postman away/aliens/returned to sender) must be picked up onsite."

1. Yeah, should be able to replace a badge that had your name on it as a security concern and get a new one issued, right?
Per CCI's Toucan 11/11/2015 http://comic-con.org/toucan/attendee-preregistration-frequently-asked-questions
Q: Won’t sending out badges increase scalping?
A: Comic-Con has always taken a very active role in monitoring scalping activity both online and onsite. We have discovered that the majority of badges being sold on the after market are counterfeit. The Comic-Con Member ID system and the high level of demand make it very difficult for scalpers to purchase more than a couple of badges, so unscrupulous sellers have resorted to creating their own. RFID technology will help us eliminate the counterfeit badges that are being sold to unsuspecting customers, and will also allow us to “turn off” RFID badges that were stolen, lost, or undelivered.
Comic-Con badges will continue to be printed with your full name, and you may be asked to show photo identification that matches the name on your badge when you arrive.
2. I think the only definite thing CCI has said is that they will not Replace by Mail.

scary scenario.
Will CCI charge a nominal fee for an undeliverable (lost, stolen, moved, returned to sender) badge and a higher-than-nominal fee for a delivered badge, which got lost, which may be comparable/equal to the remaining days on the badge?

A good point, indeed. Have your own bar code e-mail as back-up. It could be very useful in various "lost" (stolen or undeliverable) badge situations.

Thanks SamTurtledove. So everyone in the group got separate emails with separate barcodes? That makes it easier then. I was under the assumption that only the buyer got the barcode and that the single barcode covered the whole group of 3 or 4. I wasn't in pre-reg though. I'll also wait for official word from cci on this if they get back to me.

Yes, that's correct. Each person should have gotten their own badge bar code e-mail. The bar code e-mails go to each individual. In other words, even if the buyer got your badge for you in his or her registration session, the buyer doesn't get your bar code e-mail. That's sent directly from CCI's registration vendor (EPIC Registration) to the e-mail address listed on your Member ID account.

Another issue (and hopefully we will hear an announcement on this soon) is people who upgrade badges.
For example, Person A has Person B buy a Thurs/Sun badge for then in pre-reg. Then in open reg, Person C upgrades Person A to a 4 day badge. Does Person A's badge get mailed to Person B or Person C?

Actually, I think there's a reasonable chance they will announce this somewhere (perhaps in a FAQ) before this Saturday's sale. But if they do not, I would be happy to ask them.

Agree with this viewpoint based on other conventions that use RFID. If your buyer doesn't send you your badge, you'll still have your own barcode confirmation you can bring to the help desk to get your old "lost" badge turned off and issued a new one. Simple.
-

For example, Person A has Person B buy a Thurs/Sun badge for then in pre-reg. Then in open reg, Person C upgrades Person A to a 4 day badge. Does Person A's badge get mailed to Person B or Person C?
Since all badges are being shipped to the buyer, Person B will have half his badges delivered to A and half his badges delivered to C. That's how I read the policy. All badge shipment is linked to the buyer only regardless when they were purchased.
EDIT - The wrinkle in that theory is if they get Preview Night. There is no separate PN badge (or at least there hasn't been in the past) so what happens if one person buys you Thu/Sun and then another person buys you Wed/Sat/Sun? Will we see single day Wednesday badges this year? Otherwise they'll have to consolidate the single days into one badge and then who is it shipped to?
I would think maybe the LAST buyer on record? The last buyer trumps the previous?
-

That may be true if CCI plans on using multiple badges for different days. If it's a 4-day badge, it doesn't seem very likely that CCI will split up the badges to two different senders. It would actually make more sense to code the RFID chip to include all four days and then ship the badge to one of the buyers (first or second).
Because of this RFID technology that they're moving toward, I would think they would try to take advantage of that, instead of making individual badges for each day for everyone who got multiple days.
-
But then how would that interact with CCI's automatic consolidation policy? Their website says that anyone who buys all 4 (or 5 with PN) will have their badges automatically consolidated into one. Where does the consolidated badge get mailed to?
Aargh, Tapatalk. Now I see this question has already been asked. Sorry for the repeat.

Sorry guys I edited my original while you were posting. I agree. The 4-day consolidate badge has to be shipped to a single buyer only, otherwise that is a great way for people to get around consolidation to get four single day badges they can use for daily exclusives.
I'll still bet that if you got 1 badge in first sale and two badges in second sale they'll be sent to two buyers. Only the 4 single days pose an issue.
-

Isn't that second sale considered an upgrade (you upgraded to 4-days), in which you've already decided your new, preferred shipping address with the new buyer (in the second sale)? So one badge, shipping defaults to that second address.

They get shipped to last person that placed the purchase. Meaning that If someone buys the badges for you, then they are shipped to that person that purchased them.
I asked that question yesterday on An Englishman in San Diego.
-
My friend in legal just made a very valid point.
Both orders prereg or open reg HAVE to be shipped to the buyer. They are the one that purchased the item. It would be like you buying three things on Amazon and then having Amazon ship two to you and one to another person because they said it was theirs. (Amazon has the option to enter multiple shipping addresses, but SDCC does not).
Unless it is written in their purchase terms & conditions that badges can be shipped to someone other than the person who bought them. I think legally they have to ship all badges to the buyer unless they add a "consent" feature or change the T&C. Unless they can get around that in some way because each purchased item is linked to a Member ID? But that still doesn't negate the purchase of items and/or goods by a single buyer.
-
Alright, e-mail about shipping addresses and replacement badges done and sent to CCI!
I asked about multiple buyers and possible multiple shipping addresses, replacement badges if lost or stolen, and whether or not we will get a chance to update/check the shipping address prior to the badges being mailed out in June.
I'll let you all know if and when I hear from them. ^__^d

http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5694.0
wolfgirl1272's buying group is still open to new members at the moment. Please PM her to ask about joining her group. (Note that you can only join one buying group, and her group can close at anytime now.)
Please remember the following, as mentioned in the first post of the official buying group thread:Joining a buying group requires commitment to the group. All members of all buying groups must be willing and able to do the following things:
- Be eligible for the 2016 open registration badge sale.
- Share personal information with the group leader. This includes (but may not be limited to) your last name, phone number and email address.
- Purchase badges for strangers (other people in the group, whom you may not know).
- Stay online/in the waiting room during the sale even if a badge has already been purchased for you, to help out others in the group by buying for them.
- Join in a group chat (to be determined by the group leader) to stay in touch with your group on registration day.
- If someone else buys a badge for you, payment should be made immediately (preferably within 24 hours of the badge sale) to the buyer.
- If you buy badges for someone else, they will be mailed to you. You must contact the person for whom you have purchased badges and work with them to determine how you will deliver their badge (meet in person at the con, USPS priority mail, etc.).
- If someone else buys a badge for you, you must contact the person who purchased for you and work with them to determine how you will deliver their badge (meet in person at the con, USPS priority mail, etc.) This may include paying an additional shipping fee ($5-$6 without insurance, within the US).
Hope that helps! Good luck.

Buying group update: All groups are CLOSED!
Wolfgirl1272's group is now full. Her group is closed. She will contact everyone who has messaged her by tomorrow and let them know if she can accommodate them. She will not accept anyone who has not already contacted her.
All buying groups are now closed.

Isn't that second sale considered an upgrade (you upgraded to 4-days), in which you've already decided your new, preferred shipping address with the new buyer (in the second sale)? So one badge, shipping defaults to that second address.
I would think ANY additional badge purchase in the General Registration would be considered an "upgrade" (Sunday in Pre-Reg + Thursday & Sunday = upgrade, no?).
I suspect that the last 'sale'/buyer is who the badge is mailed to. For example, if I purchased Sunday & Thursday in Pre-Reg, and then a friend picked me up Friday in Gen-Reg, then I would think that last sale would get my three badges.
-
Another issue (and hopefully we will hear an announcement on this soon) is people who upgrade badges.
For example, Person A has Person B buy a Thurs/Sun badge for then in pre-reg. Then in open reg, Person C upgrades Person A to a 4 day badge. Does Person A's badge get mailed to Person B or Person C?
I wonder how many attendees/badges will be "complicated" with the group sales thing? I know we'll never get a legit number/percentage from CCI (or at least I doubt we will: I guess it's possible they'll release that somewhere, but seems unlike them at this point), but does anyone more data analysis savvy than I have a guesstimate of percentages we're dealing with? Like how many:
* upgrade from Pre-Reg to Gen-Reg with different end buyers (i.e. one friend helped me out at Pre-Reg, and another friend helped me in Gen-Reg)
* percentage of badges mailed to a different Member ID Address
I wonder if we're uber plugged in to the group-buying/helping mentality and it seems like a significant deal, while the majority of attendees go the solo route and thus don't have any problems. Between the people in my groups from Pre-Reg, only one non-family member will have a badge mailed to me (but I buy his badge every year, so new).
-
Yes, I am curious on how the badges will be mailed. For example my friend (friend # 1) buys me 2 days in pre-reg and my badges gets mailed to her. During open reg a different friend (friend # 2) buys my other two days. Then does the second batch get mailed to friend #2 or will it combined and go to friend #1's address? hmmmm
-
I remember reading somewhere that all US located badges aren't mailed out until June or something like that for consolidation.

It's true that badges won't be mailed out until June.

That's one of the questions I e-mailed to CCI, so hopefully, they'll get back with a response in a timely manner.

Ahhhh, I just found out my shipping address will change in the near future (not sure to what yet). I hope I can have them delivered there, or cancel the shipping so I can pick them up on site.
-
Has the link to check compatibility been released?
-
I don't see it in the instructions and I tried the link from pre-registration. It doesn't work anymore.

I figure a FAQ today and a technical check tomorrow.
If we get another Walkthrough, that'll have the new sale's link to the browser check (I remember someone found it in preregistration!), I bet.

CCI got back to me with this response to the questions I asked!
Here are the questions I asked and the replies they gave for each of them.
Question #1:
There is conflicting information regarding shipping addresses for badges: The FAQs below suggest that the shipping address is final during checkout ("enter a shipping address that would be valid for you in June 2016"), but there was a yellow status bar message during the attendee pre-registration sale that indicates "If your shipping address changes after you purchase a badge today, you will have a chance to update it before we ship!"
What scenario is correct? Will we be able to update and check the shipping address before badges are sent out in June?
CCI's answer:
If you need to update your mailing address you would need to contact us and we can update the system. Unfortunately we do not have an answer for when badges will be shipped at this time. The badges will only be mailed to the buyer and the address they provide during checkout, if the address needs to be changed the buyer needs to email us directly and we can assist further.
**What this means: At this time, only the buyer can request a change for the shipping address for the badges, and they have to e-mail CCI in order to do so.
Question #2:
Person A buys Person B's Thursday and Sunday badges in pre-registration. Then, during open registration, Person C upgrades Person B to a 4-day badge without Preview Night. Does Person B's 4-day badge get mailed to Person B or Person C? Or, are the badges split and mailed to two different buyers, according to whichever they purchased? What about this situation with 4-day badges with Preview Night?
CCI's answer:
The badges will not be split and mailed to two different buyers, it will be mailed to the buyer who is purchasing the badge at the time of Open Online Registration.
**What this means: If there are two different buyers after open registration, the badges will be mailed out to the buyer from open registration.
*EDIT (February 17th, 2016): See this FAQ from CCI: http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5871.0
Latest FAQ says that the badges will be mailed to the buyer only, even if there is more than one buyer.
Question #3:
The FAQ indicates that a "lost in the mail or stolen badge" can be replaced on-site, but another answer in the FAQ suggests that a "stolen badge" (stolen by the buyer, that is) cannot be replaced on-site. As the information can be interpreted as contradictory, which is correct?
CCI's reply (verbatim from the FAQs):
RFID technology will allow us to “turn off” your lost or stolen badge and issue you a new one when you arrive onsite. The badge that was lost or stolen will not be valid for entry to Comic-Con.
Question #4:
If the buyer does mail out the badges to everyone that he purchased for and Person B doesn't receive it--either it's lost in the mail, or the package is somehow undelivered--would Person B be able to pick up a replacement badge at Comic-Con, using his or her badge bar code e-mail?
CCI's reply (they copy-and-pasted this directly from the FAQs, like for #3's answer):
Comic-Con will ship all badges purchased during a registration session to the buyer only. If the buyer does not give you your badge, Comic-Con is unable to intervene on your behalf or send you a new badge. Make sure that you personally know and trust the people you are working with in a buying group.
Question #5:
Is there a fee to have a lost or stolen badge replaced on-site at Comic-Con? If so, what is it?
CCI's reply:
We cannot advise at this time if there will be a fee for a lost or stolen badge onsite.
**What this means: This is a sugarcoated way of saying: "We don't know if we're charging people for replacing lost or stolen badges."
-
Thank you Zero
-
I may have to e-mail them again to clarify about lost or stolen badges and rephrase the questions more appropriately. Their copy-and-paste responses were not satisfactory, nor did they clarify exactly what they mean.
By the sounds of it, I believe it can be interpreted that a badge lost at-con, lost badge in the mail (meaning the buyer didn't receive it at all), and a badge stolen at-con can be replaced on-site. However, the way they keep referring to trusting the buyer (if you're working in a buying group) suggests that they won't replace a badge if it was delivered to the buyer. Basically, I think they're saying that they're not responsible after the badge has been delivered to the shipping address, and if the person doesn't receive the badge from the buyer, they're out of luck.
This would imply that they may have a record or database to keep track of delivered or undelivered badges... Maybe, maybe not, but we shall see.
E-mail round two begins! (You won't hear the last of me, Comic-Con! HA!)

Let the #ClarityGames begin ->

Q: I bought three badges during Attendee Preregistration, and a friend was able to get me one more during Open Registration. Which buyer will my badges be sent to?
A: All badges will be shipped to the buyer only, regardless of when they were purchased. The three badges you purchased during preregistration will be sent to you, and the last badge purchased during Open Registration will be sent to your friend.

ok, now i'm wicked confused......
-
Don't get me started on the contradictions! Ha ha, the left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing at CCI... Or, on a more positive note, the e-mail was sent to me today, so that could be their new, updated policy on shipping badges.
I'll have to ask that question again... Give them a week or so to see if they have come to a definite answer, and then I'll e-mail them.
-
but i thought they combined badges....what abt PV nite folks, like
someone bought me a 4 day in pre-reg and someone else bought me a pv nite in gen reg
how are they gonna ship to the buyer?
-

According to their reply to my e-mail, it's supposed to go to the buyer from open registration. The combined 4-day with Preview Night would be sent to the buyer that made the most recent purchase.
However, the information is still conflicting with the FAQs, so I would personally take it with a grain of salt until a few months from now. Hopefully, everything with badges will be settled by then and they figured all of it out in-house.

that is very confusing, I hope CCI has a work around for that, if not we could see some really confusing events, I don't wish that on anyone
-
I honestly think they are making this mailing badges harder on their end then they need to be. With the required member ID they could charge a small fee and mail all badges to the Member ID address. It would be a lot less hassle than all this.
-
Another thing that could be done is have the buyer provide a tracking # once they send it to whomever they purchased it for. I know that that costs a bit more then putting it in the regular mail, but I would imagine most people would pay that for the peace of mind that it would give them.

Absolutely! I was just thinking this. It just takes a ton of stress off of the buyer AND the person receiving the badge. There's nothing like anxiously waiting for something or waiting for someone to receive something you've sent.
-

Truthfully, I couldn't agree more. I wonder if EPIC Registration is doing the shipping and if that's part of the issue on why they can't get the badges to individuals properly. It makes no sense to ship it to the buyer, since CCI can easily access everyone's proper mailing address. (Even EPIC has access to the mailing address on the Member ID account--it's reflected on the badge bar code confirmation e-mail. It has your mailing address right there!)
@__@; It's a little absurd, if you think about it.
-
@__@; It's a little absurd, if you think about it.
agreed!
-
I like that I got to enter a ship to address for the badges though. I have my home address on my member id and I can't have anything shipped to the house. Things get stolen off porches all the time but are marked as delivered. Everything larger than a letter goes to work. (It's a good neighborhood...but there's major package thefting.)
What would be nice for next year is an option to put a different ship to address on your member id.
-
Worse case scenario, someone doesn't ship your badges. Wouldn't the person still need the bar code email or your ID to verify the badge to activate it? (Making it un-usablefor that person.)
-

That depends on how CCI plans to activate the badges this year. They could just walk by and tap it on a kiosk (like the bus or subway public transportation cards), or they could have Registration staff members scanning the RFID badges and checking ID. Perhaps they might do something else entirely.
-
You can't mail a product to someone who didn't buy it. It makes legal sense for SDCC to mail all badges to the buyer only.
Example: in preregistration person B buys their own Thu/Sun badge. In the second sale, person A buys person B a Saturday badge. Person B does not pay person A. Comic-Con then "consolidates" person B's order and sends it to them directly. Now person B has their badges even though they didn't pay A.
Who do you think A is going to contact to resolve? They'll call ComicCon to cancel the badge.
ComicCon doesn't want to get involved in that mess. They're going to send the badges to the person who paid for them. Like every other online business on earth.

A very good point. However, payment information for the badges during the registration session may not necessarily match the information on the buyer's Member ID account, so technically, the buyer may not even have paid for the transaction. (There are cases where people used someone else's credit card for the purchase. Of course, with online purchases, the payment information isn't that important as long as it's being paid for and it's being shipped somewhere...)
but person A would request a refund if they didn't get paid
Very true! The buyer is the only person that can request a refund.
-
The buyer can request a refund, but unless SDCC has specifically stated in their Terms that the items you buy could potentially be shipped to another person, they're on the hook - legally - to send the item to the buyer regardless if a refund option is available.
You simply can't send an item to someone who didn't pay for it. It doesn't belong to them (in SDCC's eyes) regardless if they paid the buyer or not.
Zero, I didn't quite follow your scenario :) I'm sorry! I think I'm using the term "buyer" here as the person who's credit card was used.
Having a refund option does not get SDCC off the hook to fulfill a purchase order to the person who paid and entered their address. You just can't do that without permission from the buyer.
According to CCI, the "buyer" is basically the Member ID (plus registration code) used to log into the EPIC online waiting room. If that person gets selected to go through to the badge purchase page, then the "buyer" enters in up to three Member IDs and selects which days to purchase for each Member ID. Once they get through that process, the "buyer" enters in the payment information. However, the payment information could be a family member or friend's credit card information, so the "buyer" may not actually be making the physical purchase. In the scenario you mentioned, it would mean that the badges would have to go to the person whose name is on the credit card, which may or may not be true for all cases.
For example, my friend logged into the waiting room using her own Member ID and registration code on her own computer. She was the first one to get through to the badge purchase page in our group. She's considered the "buyer" at this point. Then, she gets badges for two other people in our group (for a total of three Member IDs, including hers). However, I let her use my credit card information for the payment page, but the shipping address she entered in is her home address (not my mailing address that is linked to the credit card). Therefore, according to the FAQs, CCI would be shipping all of the badges to her place, not mine (even though I'm listed on the credit card for payment).
I hope that helps in clarifying things. ^__^d
Quick update for everyone keeping up with this thread:
I'm actually in an on-going e-mail dialogue with CCI in regards to the questions addressed in one of my earlier posts (click here (http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5306.msg143607#msg143607)), so let's see how this goes. I may get another response from them...
As usual, I'll make a post in this thread with any further updates. ^__^d
(Round three of e-mails has started! We will get to the bottom of this eventually, my forum friends.)
-
Got it!
I was looking at the buyer from a different perspective. I'm looking at the buyer as the person who fills out the credit card payment screen.
Example:
I go online.
I buy an item.
I enter a shipping address.
I enter my credit card. (Or someone else's)
I enter a billing address.
Transaction complete.
As a consumer, I expect everything in my order to be shipped the the shipping address I entered. If I buy a friend (Sarah) a pair of pants on Amazon, as the "buyer" I have to choose if I want the pants shipped to her or to me. That is an active choice I make during checkout. If I entered my address for delivery, Amazon couldn't then email me and say "oh, Sarah has ordered a shirt that goes with those pants, so we're going to send those pants to her directly."
You gotta get the buyer's permission to do that. It's just good business practice to avoid lawsuits.
I'm not saying that's why SDCC made their decision. I just see it from a legal standpoint it could get dicey.
*EDIT* They could avoid all this by simply adding a checkbox "I agree that badges in my order may, in some cases, be shipped to the Member directly."

Comic-Con Toucan blog update regarding shipping badges:
http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5871.0
Updated my post:
Click here (http://friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5306.msg143607#msg143607)!
Q: I bought three badges during Attendee Preregistration, and a friend was able to get me one more during Open Registration. Which buyer will my badges be sent to?
A: All badges will be shipped to the buyer only, regardless of when they were purchased. The three badges you purchased during preregistration will be sent to you, and the last badge purchased during Open Registration will be sent to your friend, and you will be responsible for retrieving it from him/her.
(There is an underlying implication, Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
)
--------------------
Here's another interesting tidbit from the latest FAQ:
Q: Will you be shipping child badges?
A: No, child badges will not be shipped in advance. You may register your child (age 12 and under) for a complimentary badge when you arrive onsite.
-
The need to register children onsite makes sense, since their badges are free and the policy could easily be abused. They want to look at the child before issuing a badge.

I think this indicates a major shift in how cci thinks about badges & PV nite. It's gonna be different but i think, will keep cci current in the world of technology and ticketing processes. I for one am glad cci is making the shift to RFID even tho there might be speed bumps, I trust them to work in our best interests.
I would much rather an organization take a leap of faith with new technology then stay in the past. the advantages of the 'leaps' can be huge.

This is slightly off topic but man I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue! I have everything delivered to my father's gated community now, because my packages are stolen off my door stoop as well, despite my neighbor hood being fine. :c
-
i'm going to assume the badges will be mailed out via the usps, hopefully with tracking. and not delivered as a pkg on the front stoop
-
and not delivered as a pkg on the front stoop
Therein lies the problem....even with tracking they can just leave the package on the stoop. What is required to not just leave the package is tracking and "signature required." This costs $2.45 more on a priority package. (perhaps the shipping costs are why the badge prices went up a bit this year.) But, with tracking, it should show an out for delivery date so you would know to stay at home. (But, that's also an issue here. Sometimes my mailman comes at 10am. Sometimes he comes at 6:30pm! I do not live in a very efficient city.)
I ship stuff to customers a lot. There's really rarely a problem. But, I have had several people miss that their packages are sitting on their porch and have even called me a week after delivery to say they don't have it. When I track it, its "left on porch." If you really want to be sure, have the badges shipped somewhere you know a person will be physically receiving it.
I'm super pro-RFID and the shipping despite all that!
-
I just read the last 3 pages and I'm even more confused. CCI would split up a badge? What if you got 4 nights and someone else gets you preview night?
Gah, I hate that they keep changing the system just when I get used to it.

(There is an underlying implication, Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.
)
Curious what you mean here; can you PM me the implication?
-
Wow, I'm really surprised they decided to split up the badge. So this means no consolidated 4 day badges for those who used two different sales
-

Unfortunately this has created more work for them. At first I thought they were just being stupid. However, the argument above about the legal issues of shipping to a buyer make sense and complicates things. With two separate buyers they become two separate purchased items.
I'm guessing they have out weighed the cost though and these complications are minimal compared to the hassles the RFID save them from.
-

The sad thing is, though, that TheToucanHasLanded was right, above. All they would need to do is add a line to their terms and conditions stating that all badges would only be shipped to the address listed in the Member ID, and then as long as you checked the box they'd be fine.
-
Yikes, THIS is going to be interesting to explain to the buying groups!
I agree with TheToucanHasLanded and semigeekgirl below - this could have been solved with a simple check box at the end of the purchase and in their terms & conditions. They could then ship all badges to each attendee with a Member ID registered address within the US, and international buyers could simply just pick up on site.
On an unrelated note, I also just found out today how much money I owe in taxes this year, and I've been cringing ever since. In other words, PLEASE no more surprises today, CCI! :o
Edit: Just to add - thanks for sharing and updating all of your badge mailing inquiries, Zero! :)

We DO NOT know this is the case, it's just being implied. I fully anticipate getting more info on this, hopefully shortly but it may take a while as the *first thing* we need to do is to buy our badges tomorrow! Saturday!<brainburn>
LOL

By the sounds of it, I believe it can be interpreted that a badge lost at-con, lost badge in the mail (meaning the buyer didn't receive it at all), and a badge stolen at-con can be replaced on-site. However, the way they keep referring to trusting the buyer (if you're working in a buying group) suggests that they won't replace a badge if it was delivered to the buyer. Basically, I think they're saying that they're not responsible after the badge has been delivered to the shipping address, and if the person doesn't receive the badge from the buyer, they're out of luck.
According to this interpretation, if they are not responsible after it's delivered and before the con begins, you may not be covered even if you are your own buyer (you bought for yourself), your badge is delivered and confirmed as delivered but then you lost it or had it stolen sometime before the con (not on site). It doesn't seem like they would really deny you a replacement in this case. So confusing!

They will. On the website it says if it's "stolen off your porch" they'll deactivate it and give you a new one onsite.

Does anyone find it amusing that Ser Barristan is having his badges shipped to Daenerys Targaryen at One Mereen Plaza (or something similar)?
-

Yes, but I think that still basically means before its delivered to you, like it was stolen before you got home or whatever. I meant during the time after delivery and before the convention starts, like you misplaced it somewhere. But more to the point, I am wondering what this means about the larger picture and if you are not your own buyer. If they are not responsible after delivery, as has been speculated, and if they then replace lost badges for those who bought their own, not doing the same for those who had to have friends or family members buy them theirs seems contradictory and confusing. Hopefully things will be clarified.

Truthfully, since this is also all new territory for CCI, I'm not even sure if they know what they will do in that case (or if they have it figured all out yet). >__<;;

You're welcome! Thank you for your thank you, ha ha. Glad I could help.
-
Big question is, does the "buyer" have to pick up the badge if they don't make it?
I almost feel like their stupid adherence to only shipping to buyer is to discourage buying groups.
I understand they think they are saving money on shipping, but they are going to be shipping the same person's badges to potentially 2 addresses now and printing multiple single days instead of one 4day badge to one person. Unless the single 4-day is a thing of the past now.
This would be so much simpler if they'd just mail to address attached to member ID.....but no, fiasco to maybe save a stamp.
-
I've been reading so much info on Registration that my brain hurts.
So, I have already bought 4-Day badges for my bff and me without Preview Night. My questions are:
Am I allowed to participate in Open Registration to buy Preview Night?
Can I participate in Open Registration without buying any badges for myself, but buy for other eligible participants?
My friends are going to play this Saturday and I just want to up their chances if possible of scoring them badges.

Yes, you can participate in open registration to buy Preview Night. (Go into your Member ID account. If you have a green check mark next to "OK '16 Open Registration" (or something like that), then you can participate in the sale on Saturday morning.
Yes, you can participate in open registration without buying badges for yourself. You just need to click the "Clear" button to remove your Member ID from the purchase page. Then, you can enter into up to other three Member IDs so you can buy badges for eligible people.
Hope that helps! Good luck.

They've stated in multiple FAQs that they don't condone buying groups unless you know and trust each other, so I think it's definitely one of the reasons (in addition to the usual legal aspects of why they have to ship it to the "buyer," like other online transactions).

who's on Toucan watch today?
What's left to get? a FAQ2?
we have codes, links & tech check plus a vid-
i keep thinking we'll get something abt shipping/rfid but then again i can see how they could wait. unless there's a TOS adjustment, they technically don't have to spell it out until they're ready.
i will say, the numbers speculation will be interesting if cci moves to only single day badges. I also wonder how it will change the game for the exclusive's folks.

Doesn't sound like shipping to two addresses is much of a wide spread issue as we thought. 1% of attendees are impacted. Probably not worth the cost of mailing to every single member just to help that 1%
http://sdccblog.com/2016/02/san-diego-comic-con-2016-badge-shipping-information/
David Glanzer, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Comic-Con International, said, “Based on data provided to us from EPIC Registration, less than 1% of our total number of attendees fell under the ‘multiple buyer’ situation in 2015. This very small number of attendees will be sent single day badges. If they would like to consolidate their badges when they arrive onsite, they can visit the Attendee Badge Solutions Desk.”

I have more registration codes than devices. I know that previously you could use one device and use two different browsers with 2 different registration codes. Does anyone know if this is still the case? I did watch the instructional video but it stated your registration code is good for only one device and one browser. It did not address if you had more than one code with only one device. Any advice will be helpful :)

3. Will you need multiple computers to register a family of four?
No, we don’t expect you all to have an unlimited supply of MacBooks at your fingertips! If you have a family of four with four unique registration codes, simply open four separate browsers on your device and enter one registration code per browser. It goes a little something like this …
1. Open Safari (or another browser of choice). Click the link in your email to access the EPIC landing page. Enter your first registration code on the landing page and authorize that browser to enter the waiting room.
2. Open Google Chrome on the same computer. Repeat the steps above and enter your second registration code on the landing page to authorize this browser to enter the waiting room.
3. Open Firefox and Internet Explorer on the same computer and repeat the steps above for the third and fourth registration codes.
Viola! You are on your way to registering your fantastic party of four. Please keep in mind that not all eligible attendees will be selected for a registration session. It is possible that none of your waiting room entries will be selected.

If you only have one browser installed, the landing page won't let you open two tabs of the same browser. One tab will boot out the other.
If you have two different browsers installed, you need two different registration codes. Those twodifferent browsers can be on the same device.
You'd have to keep an eye on the two browsers, because...

Lucked out and tomorrow will be primarily a research day. So I should be able to micromanage my group through the sale.
Of course, today at work was so unbelievably stressful I kind of just want to cry... and now I'm attempting to do the last organizing for Gen Reg. It's going to be time for xanax soon.

Thank you, not only did Firefox work but when I went back to try Chrome again, it worked. So, maybe it's just a flaky internet day for me or something? I'll probably have both open just in case. Thanks again!

Glad it worked out for you. I've heard of people using both normal and incognito mode on multiple browsers -- Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE -- all at the same time. Sounds awfully risky, but hey, whatever works for them!

No. But if one or more of those family members are children who were 12 or younger on August 1, 2015, then they qualify as children and do not need a member ID or a badge. They would be registered onsite at the con.
All adults 13 and up need a member ID and a badge. The member ID had to have been created before the deadline for this sale (I think it was February 7).

Does anyone know if Microsoft Edge and I.E. count as 2 different browsers?

Viola? Really? Aargh. I try to give spelling errors a pass but ones like this drive me crazy!!! A viola is a string instrument. Voila is a French exclamation expressing "there it is". Ugh.
I spell it Voilà . 8)

Yes congrats to those who made it in! Unfortunately i struck out for the first time after 3 years of getting 4+ days :( I do have a Sunday badge from pre-registration tho which is something to be thankful for. Guess I'll be checking out the offsites this year!

Big thanks to Batgirl's group, we all tried really hard. :)
Congrats to everyone that gone in!!! Still grateful for the experience and all!

There definitely will be off-site events for Comic-Con, and more information will be announced as it gets closer to the convention. You can look into those as well. ^__^d

ugh 3 sessions running not one got in :(
-
The sale didn't go well for me and my 2 family members. Bummer. :(
I don't have the numbers, but I do believe the group I was in did fine. I know some got in, which is good to know! Overall, as I said in FB for the buying group I am in, regardless how it went today, a big thank you to the group leader (B. Troy) for setting all of this up! And Batgirl, thank you for accepting my mom into your group. Sadly, she didn't get anything but she loved the whole setup you had and others trying to help everyone out. And to the other group leaders, a big thank you to you too! Truly a great community we have here!
Thankfully it wasn't a complete bad day, using all of the tips and knowledge I learned from Twitter, watching a Cup O' Tea every Sunday, and from this forum, I didn't let the random system control my fate. I had a plan b! I am a volunteer so I can say I will see you all in San Diego! :)
To those that didn't get anything, don't give up! Keep on trying! It sucks not going, I know, I didn't last year but if you do your homework like I did, you will get in somehow if the option is there. Take care all! Time to look at hotels. You know how that always goes. Fun, right? ;)
-
Managed Sunday badges. Will there be a round two for any refunds this year? I'm hoping to get another day but if not, I will enjoy one day at the con plus the other sites around San Diego
-
I think the past...2? 3? years didn't have a refund/resale...so what folks got today is it, sad to say.
-

It seems unlikely that they'll have a sale for refunded badges. They didn't have one for the last two years either.
-
What Zero said, I doubt there is one too. Of course, never say never, but CCI sort of used the same wording this year like last year to say that they don't think one will happen.

True, I've always wanted to visit the zoo there!
-
Well, it feels I am reading more unsuccessful stories/threads this year, which is a bummer.
I snagged my badges during pre-reg, but I set up small group for five other people who needed badges, and not one of us even got in a session before everything was sold out.
-
I got in for Sunday, which is good because I can participate in attendee registration later on. Though I wonder what to do the other days...
We'll be scouring the internet looking for info about off-site events, so stay tuned.
-
Had 3 sessions going and not one got in. It might just be a blessing in disguise. I know people that are going and I missed so much going on outside because I was too busy at the con.
-
Great news! Thanks to Kevin, my younger brother and his girlfriend will be going to their first Comic-Con! All they wanted was Friday and Saturday.
And Rebecca upgraded me to Preview Night. :)

Post-Gen Reg Sum up:
We had 10 people in our group logged in working for a handful of missing days and only a few full badges. A couple of our group members were cross-pollinating in another group (we take this into consideration for buying order).
In the end, only 1 from our main group got in and picked up the missing days for 3 members. 1 got in through his other group and picked up him and 2 from his second group.
No one else in our group got through. Everyone started with at least 1 day though. So, we've got some 10 year vets in our buying group who ended with just Sunday badges. We all know our good luck might be up some time! From the google chat we were having sounds like Disneyland might be picking up some extra visitors that weekend. (All the people who missed out, coincidentally, are from Cali.)
A success from my point of view as my closest friends and their spouses (and mine!) are fully covered. ;)
-
Just from looking at online chatter/comments, it seems like there were a lot more people trying in open reg this year, and that the entire process moved more quickly.
Those of you who got Sunday badges and are still planning to attend, good on you! There is so much to do, and you can spend 3 days doing offsites and sleeping in and then Sunday on the exhibit floor, plus be eligible for pre-reg next year. I look forward to meeting you at the con!
-
Quick question, is this the right and still used email to email CCI: ? I have some photos of an error Safari kept on getting during the sale this morning after 9am that I would like them to take a look at, after getting some advice on what to do. Even after re-entering the code, knowing that my spot in line is saved, still got the error multiple times--a grey page that says it can't open up the page. I did test this browser yesterday and it came back good. The address bar also had account login in it, which has me thinking. Don't recall seeing that when putting in the code, unless I totally missed it? If they say they can't help me, at least I know, rather than, what if.
-
it might be best to submit them via your member id 'contact us' link
-
I had 5 codes and 4 devices. Not one got in. I'm lucky because everyone in my family had 4-day or 4-day+ I was trying for the last 2 preview nights and for helping out others in our buying group. Oh well, there's always next year :)

I just did that. :) You can't attach photos doing it that way, I didn't see any options for that, but I did say that I do have photos while explaining the problem in the word box. Doesn't hurt to try.
-
Our group did really well, I think everyone left happy even know not everyone got what they wanted.
As for me, I had 5 codes running from our group members, and only two made it in. Neither of those were my own code, which raises my total to two times that my own member ID has made it in to 3 times where I have been locked out since randomization was put in (thank goodness for others helping out!)
-
So truely mixed reactions this year. Based on our group i thought we did extremely well. My small group had 6 people and 1 of us got in with 4 days remaining. For the big group 30 people estimated, it appears most people got at least 2 days. This was way bettter then last year during general reg. I remeber only about half of us getting badges of some kind. But then i read the stories of the many who missed.. so maybe our big group was just really lucky this year. Either way, fantastic job from my group this year.
Next... hotels

Another speedy sellout for Comic-Con badges
Comic-Con's annual online ticket sale Saturday morning brought cheers and groans from its biggest fans as badges for the four-day event sold out in record time, just under an hour.
"Comic-Con 2016 badges have sold out! We thank all of your for your patronage and support!" was the message hopeful purchasers saw online as they awaited news of whether they had been selected to buy a badge.
Badges for each of the four days, plus a preview night, are doled out randomly via an online waiting room, but every year demand far exceeds the number of tickets available for purchase, which leads to much dismay and sometimes anger for those who found themselves shut out. It is unlikely there will be another opportunity to purchase tickets.
The most popular days -- preview night and Friday and Saturday -- were gone within 40 minutes.
While the annual pop culture extravaganza long ago outgrew the San Diego Convention Center, organizers have made do by using meeting space in large convention hotels and spreading out onto downtown parking lots and on occasion Petco Park for special events. Each year, Comic-Con draws more than 130,000 attendees, as well as top Hollywood celebrities, movie and television directors, and authors.
Daily tickets for Thursday, Friday and Saturday sold for $55, and Sunday badges were priced at $40. Last year badges sold out in an hour.
Comic-Con this year will be held July 21-24, with preview night on July 20. Organizers of the convention have committed to staying in San Diego through 2018.
-
Well I had the exact same outcome for Gen Reg as Pre Reg. Three log ins and none even got in.
So no San Diego for us this year. :'(
Congrats to everyone who was able to buy a badge....Have a great time!

One log-in code, got in for Sunday

And really, from the time CCI/Epic first started letting people in (roughly 9:11) from the time everything was sold out was roughly 46 min. total!
I was surprised how quick Friday sold out after Saturday! It seemed like there was a decent lag between PN & Saturday, then hardly any between Saturday & Friday

9 people in my friends buying group, none of us got in. Luckily, all of us already had either what they wanted from pre reg and where trying to help the others out, or we where volunteers, so we will all be going regardless. Still, first time in 4 years none of us got in on gen reg.

Someone asked about the buying groups and the odds of how successful they were. Below is a summary of the one I was in. open to correction on any mistakes, our group did really well though. In all we had 25 people split in to 6 groups. We had about 30 codes that I'm aware of though as some people had multiple codes that others weren't using.
The buying group I was in had 6 groups. Not all people needed badges so groups were split up with
Group 1-4 Five people in each group - 3 in each needed badges (all days + pn) the other 2 people just helping out.
Group 5 Three people in the group - 2 in needing badges (1 all days + pn and 1 Sunday only).
Group 6 two people in the group looking for PN only.
Our success: excellent 4 days & pn for most, everyone in the groups got at least 3 days but no one with 4 nights already was able to also get the PN.
Group 1 - Success 4 days & PN for all. (bought by a member in group 3 who got in but had already been bought for by another session in group 3.)
Group 2 - Success but mixed - 3 days for all.
Group 3 - Success 4 days & PN for all.
Group 4 - Success 4 days & PN for all.
Group 5 - Success people got what they were looking for which was 1 person 4 day and PN and 1 person Sunday only.
Group 6 - No Luck with PN but already had 4 days.

God, I can't stand entitled behavior like this. No offense to any locals, but I think its such a silly idea to assume a convention that has the biggest and best should be saved for the people that live there first. Not like there are a large number of other cons they could go to in SoCal as locals if they wanted to, given the convenience is so important to them :p It just so happens the largest international comic/pop culture convention is in San Diego

They're also straight up ignoring what this con has become. The studios and big companies that make this particular con so much bigger than others are not orchestrating these huge interactive "wow" events so that the people in San Diego can express their love of comics. They aren't loading everyone up with free swag so San Diego citizens can advertise to each other for the next year. Those companies are specifically investing in people from around the globe that will Tweet about their exclusives, and swag, and screenings, and cool interactive off site experience. They are specifically giving out stuff advertising their product because they know it will end up all around the globe. This hasn't been a convention with the same goals as a normal convention in a very very long time. I'm betting half of the people complaining wouldn't even want to go to a convention missing the elements that have made this global anyway.
-
Just realized that I don't think I put an actual summary of how my group did. I don't join a buying group through the forum primarily because I usually have a decent-sized group of friends and friends of friends. I already have way too much to keep track of ^^;
We were only buying for 6 people during general registration (technically 7 if you count my general wish to upgrade to Preview Night.)
We had 15 codes and I think 7 of us were online (2 great friends woke up at 7:30am on a Saturday to help out even though they had their badges. So many thanks as 1 of them was also ready to take over organizing duties in case I, likely, couldn't make it myself.)
1st code got in around the 10-15 minute mark. I was so happy when it was one of the people who needed more days from pre-reg. We would've prioritized them anyway as they didn't get all 4 days initially and really wanted them, but it was just such a relief to get them 3 4-day+PN badges and pre-reg didn't go as well as we had hoped.
2nd code got in maybe 1 minute before 4-day badges sold out which thankfully meant we could get a couple of 4-day badges to flesh out our group. I had to resist the urge to threaten my brother over Steam because he happened to be the second code that got in. I wasn't expecting him to be available to help during the sale, but to my surprise he actually was that morning. But, this meant I didn't have time to prep him for the sale and how check-out would be, really, and he literally only just confirmed that he definitely wanted badges about a day and a half before the sale. He spent about 4 minutes in badge-selection debating adding another day or not to his Friday/Saturday choice. I basically kept telling him he needed to hurry and the time-limit in all caps as I panicked.
To sum up badges acquired:
3: 4-day+PN (though technically two were Saturday/Friday/PN additions instead of full)
2: 4-day
1: Friday/Saturday
We only had 2 codes get in when there were any badges available, at all. However, I gave away most of our extra codes once we finished with what we needed in the chatbox here. So I can't say for certain that any others didn't get in with time to buy badges.
A great success for my small group. I would've liked to add preview night (I've gone every time in recent years and love getting stuff out of the way), but I was just too busy being relieved and happy my groupmates got what they needed to be disappointed.
-
I had 2 codes, one got in just after Saturday sold out! I was able to get Thurs, Fri, Sun for a couple of people. On the whole I feel that my group did very well!
-
I had 4 codes and 2 devices. Was trying to supplement two Sunday tickets that my niece and I got during preregistration. None of the codes made it in.
During prereg we had the same amount of codes and setup. Only one code made it in right before Sunday sold out. Just the luck of the draw!

This is awesome! Congrats to all!
I already had my 4-days w/Preview, and decided to log on and help a friend. I was only able to get Sunday, but that's all he wanted as he plans on exploring the city during the other days.

I was successful getting badges this year! Two of us went a few years in a row before losing at Pre-Reg and Open Reg in 2014.
This year with 2 codes/2 computers (no buying group), we managed to get 4 days w/o preview night. Just got confirmation a few minutes ago.
Another blog (http://sdccblog.com/2015/02/what-are-the-odds-of-getting-a-san-diego-comic-con-badge/) pegged the Open Reg odds at around 6-7%, which feels really low to me and pretty discouraging. I wonder what they really are. Of course, situations like buying groups would alter those by quite a bit.
-
So due to some unexpected events that came up last minute, S.O. and I missed general reg completely. I'm happy that it looks like everyone in my buying group who did show up ended up getting what they wanted. But I'm a little unsure of how things will work out for us this year (and a little disappointed in myself for not planning better). Currently, I have 4 days and S.O. has Sunday only. I know that there are plenty of off-sites to take part in, but I feel like my badges for the other 3 days won't be used to the fullest since we tend to do things together. How have others handled this situation in the past?

Weird. I too live in San Diego (which is why I started going to SDCCI in the first place in 2000 - just another cool thing to do in the summer), and supply/demand is what it is. Only thing that I think would be cool is if CCI maybe sold badges in conjunction with a local comic book store (which I know would be VERY difficult logistically).
But yeah: finding excuses to whine/be bitter is not a great way to go through life.
-
They're also straight up ignoring what this con has become.
Very well said!

Here's the thing... what would the economy be like if tickets to events were only sold locally and then only after they sell to outsiders? Could you imagine if they did that for the Super Bowl which brings in millions and millions of tourist dollars each year? Just because they live in an area (in this case San Diego) what makes them any more deserving then someone who doesn't?
-
We see the same complaints year in and year out especially right after the open registration .. lots of people are shut out and what some preference. It doesn't and can't work that way.

Member ID system open for changes. Registration codes removed from Registration tab.

So, is it time to panic yet if a bar code email hasn't arrived? Anyone else NOT gotten theirs yet?

If it hasn't arrived by the end of today then yes :P
and no I haven't got mine yet

Yes, some members of my group have also not yet received their confirmations.
Perhaps on the CCI end of things, the 72 hour window is still in effect->
"Due to the high level of registration activity, confirmations may take up to 72 hours for delivery. Please add to your safe sender's folder, and check your SPAM inbox if the confirmation does not arrive within 72 hours."
This tag is still up on the "Contact Us" part of member ID ->
"Delayed Response Due to Open Registration Thank you for your inquiry. Due to a very high volume of correspondence, there may be a delayed response time. Please allow 24 — 48 hours for a reply."
Hoping they all land by later on today :)

1 person in my buying group hasn't got it yet but I have his confirmation number and his Dad in the same group got his badge so not too worried that he hasn't got it yet. If it doesn't come by Thursday though I said he should query it.
Note: One reason may be the person buying your badge had payment rejected initially. Do you know who bought the badge and have they got a successful confirmation email of payment? I know as I bought for a second group as well and my payment on that rejected so I got a rejected card email so had to fill in again and once I did they got the approval email the next morning.

Yep, this happens a lot. I almost had a heart attack the first year, but all was good.

Alright I'm a little confused by the barcode email. I got a 2nd email in addition to my receipt with my name on it saying I got 4 day without preview. Subject line: important registration information. Is this the barcode email or am I getting another email with an actual barcode?

Yes, the "Important Registration Information" email is the barcode email. Make sure you display images to see the barcode prior to printing.
-
no barcode on my email either (images displayed), maybe because it's being posted out to another member?

Me either actually hadn't realised we should. So far I got
Email 1: Order Acknowledgement with an Order Reference Number
Email 2: Credit Card Declined - Bank rejected it as thought it wasn't me. I cleared with bank and resubmitted payment details as per instructions in that email after which I got
Email 3: Comic-Con International 2016 -- Receipt with reference number and badge confirmation numbers for each person.
-
Just to be clear.
The subject line of the email will read "Comic-Con International 2016 -- Important Registration Information".
The sender of the email will be registration <at> epicreg.com.
It will include a barcode at the top right (as an image). A confirmation number. Registration date. Your registration details, including badge type, name, address, phone, email.
Underneath all this it begins:
Dear Comic-Con Attendee,
Congratulations! Your Comic-Con International 2016 badge registration is complete! Please keep this confirmation safe and secure. You may not transfer, sell, and/or share your badge or confirmation. The name on your badge must match your photo ID when you arrive onsite. We encourage you to read the entire badge purchase terms and conditions below.
This confirmation is good for Comic-Con 2016 only. No badges will be sold onsite.
Then continues with typical terms and conditions.
Hope this helps,
Steve.

thanks that's useful to see.

hmmm, my email from pre-reg included a barcode. Also bought by someone else.
There probably isn't much need for it anymore however

yup all that and I can see SDCC logo so images displayed but no barcode
-
The bar code is not actually included in the email, it is a PNG image link from https://www.tradeshowregistrar.com.
Either that site is somehow being blocked or you might have to refresh the page.
Edit: I just noticed that the Comic-Con image also is a link from the same site, so if that's working, the site isn't being blocked. Maybe just try refreshing, or try again later.
It sounds like you at least got the registration e-mail.
-
I received the confirmation email two days ago but it does not have a barcode on it (images are displayed). Is it correct that as badges are not shipped to international attendees we are required to have the barcode to collect the badges onsite?
-

All international attendees have to pick up their badges on-site.
Others in this thread have stated that their bar codes aren't being shown in their badge confirmation e-mail as well, but even if you don't have a bar code image, as long as there is a 7-digit confirmation number, you should be fine. They should be able to look that up at Comic-Con as a last resort.
Not much information to go on about that issue right now, but it's also possible that EPIC will resend confirmation e-mails as it gets closer to Comic-Con. (They've done so in the past a few times... if I recall correctly.)
-
Thanks!

Now that you guys mention it, mine has no barcode either. The one I got after Pre-Reg did have a barcode, but this one doesn't.

That could explain a lot as to why there is such confusion. My e-mail was from Pre-Reg also.
Maybe CCI has decided that if they are shipping badges, there is no need for a barcode anymore.
Is there anyone International out there that has received their confirmation e-mail? Does the e-mail contain a barcode?

I know I'm a little late to the party but I just wanted to say that I've spoken to a few people about the barcode thing.
PreReg badge e-mails have a barcode
OpenReg badge e-mails do not have a barcode
I have no idea why.

That definitely seems like the pattern we've been seeing. It's very strange. I actually suspect it could be an error on EPIC's part...

I called CCI this morning, the woman who picked up told me there shouldn't be a barcode on your E-mail confirm, just as long as your confirm number is there.
Like the rest of you, yes I did get a barcode after pre-reg and no barcode after open reg.

Thanks for letting us know, Andrew! That's definitely an interesting new development, most likely related to shipping badges this time around.

I think there does not need to be a barcode because they are mailing the badges... that's my thought

Our friends surprised my wife and I with badges. I got an email with a barcode but my wife hasn't gotten anything. Our friends sent us screen caps of the purchase so we have the reference numbers. My wife used the contact us button on the Member ID page but hasn't heard anything yet. The buyer is going to contact them as well.

I would, if that were the legit price buying through CCI.
-
I would, if that were the legit price buying through CCI.
But don't let CCI know that, I have a feeling that there are lots of us out there that would pay a much higher cost in order to attend, I always thought that that would be the way that CCI would end up dealing with overcrowding and over-demand (just keep raising the price until all the extra demand drops out).
-
if people feel that's what it worth they will pay, look at concert tickets
-

It doesn't matter. CCI could charge $1,000 for a 4 day + PN badge, and it would sell out. They know this. But CCI has stated on numerous occasions that they do not want to raise the price of their badges. They are holding the price lower than market because they don't want to price the con out of reach. This is the same reason why they are wrangling with the hotels. It makes no sense to keep badge prices low if hotels are charging a mint, and they want the hotels to keep lower prices.
So CCI already knows...
-
Wouldn't you think that if the price was changed to an absorbit amount that it would change the diversity of the people attending? Realistically the average fan could no longer attend at $1000 a pop. Because then after adding in cost of hotel, travel, food, and exclusives, you are talking about a lot of money for someone who casually wants to go.
It would also be my opinion that the people who have that kind of money to spend each year, are not the people who are camping out all night to see or attend these daily events. They want to see them, however not at the cost of camping out. Lines would eventually diminish, and many people would stop going. At those prices in about 5-7 years SDCC would be pretty easy to get into. Tickets would not sell out right away. Buying groups would wither away... i mean are you willing to pay out $3000 for 3 people you don't know or barely know?
There are 2 sides to every story and definately pro's and con's to each side. Clearly they have made an effort to slowly raise the price each of the last few years in an attempt to curb the demand. Eventually they will find that happy medium. Just 5 years ago the price of a 4 day badge with preview night was $100. Price has gone up over 125% over the past 5 years... that's not standard inflation. Let's see... 130,000 x $220 = $28,600,000. That's a lot of dough.
-
Conventiongeek, you make a lot of good points. But it is the first one that is CCI's sticking point.
if the price was changed to an absorbit amount that it would change the diversity of the people attending
They want to make sure the con is still 'affordable' for everyone attending. That's why you can expect that the price will not change significantly from year to year.

John Rogers, from his San Diego Comic Fest 2014 panel -> CCI keeps the "attendee's pocketbook" central to making decisions about the direction of its shows. :)

Yeah, there's no way that price would be affordable for me longterm. I'd drain my savings account in just a year or two as a college student. I'm not so sure if the badges would still sell out at 1k a piece to be honest.
-

I'd still go, but it would definitely impact my priorities as to what I did at the con. I make enough that this is my one time of year to really "nerd out" so to speak.
-
I would not spend $1,000 for a badge to any convention even if it's the easiest way to get one. I'd rather take my chances with registration.
-
For the sheer amount of content and interactivity that the con weekend provides as a whole, it's worth $1000. Obviously this includes offsite events and content that is supplemental to the convention but everything put together, a thousand bucks is reasonable. So yeah I'd pay that if it came down to it. I wouldn't be thrilled about it and I'd have to severely reprioritize my funds the rest of the year but Comic Con is something that I look forward to all year. As soon as one ends, I'm thinking about the next one. It's the one event that I will always try to attend and fully stay engaged in the entire year. it helps that I have free lodging and live relatively close but yeah, I'd pay $1000 for 5 days of packed entertainment.
Now with that being said, if they did charge a grand to attend, it would drastically alter how the con operates and how the surrounding areas participate.
-
The real issue, beyond what the con is worth (as I imagine the value changes per person and experience) - is that we have a third-party dictating the price of the convention now. Not CCI, but the market that is now growing because badges are going to be mailed out as tangible items this year, and early - creating that market where people can charge whatever they want - that should be the discussion.
I know that this is the first year that they are sending out badges via mail so its a bit premature to b***h about it yet, but I can't help but think this is going to stimulate the aftermarket economy and making getting badges through resellers a common thing. It's easy for SDCC to police Craigslist/eBay now, but once badges go out in the thousands, I find it hard to believe that they will have the time/energy being the small company they are to police everything that is going to pop-up on eBay.
Once resellers realize that this is a viable option does. Open Registration from this point forward will be more of a nightmare than it is already. I've already read posts this year about people having over 15+ proxy accounts (seriously, 3 or 4 for your family or whatever, ok, but over 15?) - General Registration will be a lost cause from here on out. Take that "6%" chance and knock it down to 2% once people figure out how to run bots in the waiting room.
I feel like the only way CCI is ever going to level the playing field is by only allowing a certain number of connections from a single IP address - and even though that would negatively impact my situation, I'd prefer to trying to compete against someone running a hundred accounts.
The defense that "they will check ID's, don't you worry" - feels like a moot point. In all honesty, no one knows, and if I were to make a wager, I would say that it would be near impossible given the size of the con to check ID's in any sort of way that doesn't start congestion within the con. It really feels like SDCC is saying "reselling is ok now, counterfeiting is not". It's much more of a stand against counterfeiting than anything else.
I'm lucky to have got badges during pre-reg, and will most certainly try to find a pre-reg buying group for 2017... the odds for General Registration will only get worse as popularity continues to increase and resellers try to get into this market.
-
I am really hopeful they check ID's. if not this year, then next year.
right now they have two entrances in the morning to get into the either the convention center, or hall H.
At hall "E" (or wherever they decide to set it up) there is a big line outside waiting for the convention center to open the doors to allow people inside. That's already a bottleneck (until they open up more doors later)
This entrance can have 10+ chutes set up with people checking ID's and scanning your badge. Once your inside you don't have to show ID to enter the exhibit hall or go into a panel.
they can simply make it that re-entrance REQUIRES going back to Hall E, and going back through the chutes to show ID again. I don't think it would be THAT bad.
For Hall H, they can do the exact same thing. setup Chutes right inside the door from the outside, and have a bunch of staff checking ID's as they scan the badges.
This will add extra time when returning to the convention center from lunch or nerdHQ or whatever, so that's a downside. But with enough staff and people controlling the flow of traffic from outside the convention center , to the inside of the convention center, it wouldn't be so bad.
Maybe I'm just optimistic. its kind of my thing...
and to throw in something more on-topic to registration... Congratulations everyone who got badges! see you in July... unless I die before then.
-
The scalper market is unfortunate and will likely get worse if CCI moves away from positive ID check, but we won't know about that for a while yet. For official pricing, you only need to look at CCI's Mission Statement and the fact that they are a non-profit for some insight. If they had wanted to cash in, they would have tripled (or more) badge prices and moved out years ago. The fact that they have stayed in San Diego all of these years speaks volumes. They are "of, by and for" the fans, and to the extent they can, seem to have little tolerance for profiteering by affiliated vendors.
I read something a couple of years ago that part of the reason for the price increases was to try to tamp down some of the demand, and to encourage people to only buy the days they were actually going to attend, rather than a 4 day, when their intent was actually less. RFID may help with that, now that the registration line may be history for most. I can't be in a Hall H line at 6AM and also be in line at 8:30 to pick up my badge or sleeve, which is part of what makes the 4 day so valuable, at least for me.

I wish there was a way to curb some of this eight from the member id system...ie some sort of identity verification for your member ID. Does that make sense? I cant have 8 fake member IDs if I can't prove they're real people. Of course, screening people online could also be a security risk for everyone. It might open them up to hacking if people knew thousands were uploading pics of IDs or something.
As much as I love this trip every year, I could certainly not pay $1,000 for a badge. As it is, with airfare and hotels and food for a week I could pay for an overseas trip for what it ends up costing me. I stayed cheaper for a week at a small hotel in Rome than I'm staying in San Diego! If badge prices ever shot up like that I would send my regards to y'all from Machu Picchu instead!

Restricting the number of sessions per IP address, or requiring some type of secure information (last 4 of SSN and birthday), or even a captcha at this point would be better than nothing.

they have to check ID's- i just don't see anyway around it. CCI has taken a strong stance against scalping in the past, i don't see them walking away from this cornerstone against scalping.
yes, cci will get it's money for the badge regardless of if it's been sold to a 3rd party but it goes against everything they've stood for in the past. If cci didn't care abt who the badges go to then they'd have raise the prices to beyond what us mere mortals can afford.
it seems as tho prices rise when a new feature is introduced, like the 24hr buses.
-
Indeed, they have to check. It would be somewhat lazy if they didn't, and this move would defeat the purpose CCI is trying here. Now will it be a random ID check? That is what I am more curious about, since this way has its pros and cons.

Ok people, we all have our opinions... lol Do we really think they care that much about scalping? In my experience over the past 5 years I have seen hundreds of badges scalped on ebay, i have seen the listings on craigslist. They may wonder on to these sites and keep a few people honest and they may even care about it, however they do not have the time or resources to control scalping. What makes anyone think that they will suddenly start checking id's at the convention center? They have never in the past.
Think of it this way... if they had 10 people checking id's at hall E for the general line, it would take hours to get everyone in the building each day. Think of last year badge pick up... how many people are in there helping us at the counter in the sail pavilion? At least 70-100? On Wednesday for preview night only 15k people are supposed to get in and it still takes about an hour or so to get us all in the building. Now triple that each day and reduce the number of people checking badges to 25. Ouch... forget it, they can't do it.
The RFID chip is a great idea, it rids them of the counterfit badge. Yes, people are going to sell more badges, but they will be real badges. I think they are willing to sacrifice some scalping for this benefit. It was happening anyway.
-
Now your going to make me do math cause I'm curious...
30 seconds per person to scan badge and check the ID. Let's give hall E 50 chutes with staff. That's 100 badges a minute, 0r 6000 badges an hour.
They let people into the building early anyways so they can go line up at the exhibit hall line upstairs, or line up for autographs, or panels lines.
They could start one hour earlier and get through 12,000 between 6AM and 8AM, and 24,000 total before the exhibit hall even opens at 10:30am.
I'm honestly not sure how many people are in the building waiting by 10:30am, if it's less than 24,000 then my plan works. If it's more like 50,000 then... Not so much.
Then again, if badge pickup had 100 people working, we could move them all to ID check and badge scanning duty because there well not be many people picking up badges anymore. That means in four hours they could get through about 48,000 people, all before the doors open each day. If I were volunteering I'd take that shift, wouldn't miss any of the con :)

IIRC, both RP & CCI management say, the biggest problem is not scalping but Scalping & Forging. So in theory, adding the rfid will prevent forging. the problem comes when a scalper sells a forged badge knowing it will not pass the tap in/out test. To my mind this is the biggest 'scare' to use for people considering buying from a scalper.
There is virtually nothing cci or rp can do abt the ebay listings posted, they do try.
CCI has ***always*** done spot checks of ID's at the con and they will continue to do ID checks. It will happen, of this I am certain. I also think there will be ID checks at key points- perhaps not at 6am when they're letting folks into the building....but probably at bag/book pick up, etc

I'm drawing a blank right now on who "RP" is, but I agree there will be some sort of ID check, although likely not 100% as in the past.

sry, RP= Reed Pop, they put on NYCC, C2E2, SWC etc

I *think* after all of these years, I understand how CCI thinks. They appear to be more reactive than proactive; at least, that's how they have historically behaved. When issues come up, they're always surprised, as if they didn't anticipate what was going to happen. If we work on that assumption, then here's my best guess as to their thinking.
CCI Person #1: We have some issues with scalped badges, but the vast majority of these badges are fake. People just get a color photocopier and some high quality paper and turn one legit badge into hundreds of fake ones. This causes overcrowding of the convention center and longer lines for everyone. We need to combat this.
CCI Person #2: What about those new RFID badges? Other cons use them, so they're tested technology. With RFID chips inside, it's nearly impossible to fake a badge. People with counterfeit badges will be discovered at a tap-in point, and then they won't get into the convention center.
CCI Person #3: But what about people reselling legit badges?
CCI Person #2: There are so few of these people that they won't make much of an impact. We'll be getting rid of the vast majority of badge re-sellers.
So in other words, I think that they are looking at the *current* level of scalping of legit badges. They simply do not anticipate/understand how scalpers will change their tactics. They may see some of that impact this year, or next year. At that point, then they will take action to stop it (such as going back to on-site badge pickup with ID checks). But it will be a while.
The best thing we can do is to make them aware of the situation. Going to Talkback or otherwise contacting CCI and explaining how scalpers think, and how they will shift to accommodate the new rules, is a good way to show them what they will likely be facing. IME, CCI *wants* to do the right thing, but they don't usually anticipate, only react.

Oh yeah, I knew that, thanks!. More coffee...

Looking forward to experiencing what may be a good test run of the RFID procedures, at WonderCon. Granted, it's smaller than the big show - and will be a choice opportunity to expand on what worked well and what didn't work so well before July. WonderCon usually has a Talk Back panel, right? Would be a great chance to provide feedback on the experience. 8)

"This year, WonderCon will be utilizing RFID badges, so you will be required to tap in and tap out at various locations. More on our RFID badges in a Toucan Tip next week! (Please note: we will NOT be mailing WonderCon 2016 badges out in advance; all badges must be picked up onsite.)"
Hoping that the RFID procedures don't add too much to the "line con" come July.

Hmmmm, maybe CCI should just create a highly advanced artificial intelligence to do the ID checking. Think about it! For example, it could it use a pool of data from this year to develop a tactic to check IDs that is efficient for 2017. They could name the AI, ConNet. ;)

Facial recognition software, mapping each attendee to a member ID...

Has this ever actually happened to anyone? I know they say they do it but 2016 will be my 9th year attending and I've never been ID checked. I've never even seen it happen nor do I know anyone it's happened to.

I have seen cci pulling folks over & talking to them- intensely- i have to think a id check was involved.

It happened to me a few years ago. It wasn't an ID check, but they were carefully scrutinizing badges of people going into the exhibit hall on Saturday afternoon (when it was super packed). I always hide my name on the front of my badge, and they made me pull my badge out of the holder and take off the paper covering up my name. Then they checked the badge under a special light to see if it had the embedded hologram. Then they let me cover my name up again and go through.

In reference to the $1000 badge line of conversation, I just have to say that it won't happen, whether Comic Con continues to adhere to it's non-profit mission or not. Badges aren't the only product that CCI is trying to sell in order to bring in revenue. The other product they are selling is US, to all of the studios and companies that buy floor space and advertising from them. Dramatically raising tickets prices to the market ceiling (which is WELL ABOVE $1000/ticket) would make the comic con attendee demographic WAY the heck less desirable to those companies.

I did not see any in 2015, but did in 2014. One entry door right before the dealers room opened on Friday had security checking badges and ID's.

The more and more tech dependent this badge thing becomes, the more I think of situations like in the movie Gattaca. More technology, which those who really want to, will find a way to get around. And that will not be me...

Dropping some blood on my badge to be tied to my DNA is not something I would recommend to CCI...

i have to admit, i do like this posters style;
http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/tix/5629990708.html
Hi my name is Noah Bright! I scam people on craigslist. I volunteer at the costume ball sometimes, and try to get extra tickets from the woman that runs it. I'm involved in illegal activity on here and I have to go to court sometimes for stuff like conning people out of their money. I even take money from friends! I think I'm really smart, but when I get drunk, I sometimes let the "cat out of the bag". I like to hang out in Coronado where I get old men to pay for my s**t. :) My car etc. I'm a lowlife. And I'll steal from you too. I also slash peoples tires, like my old roommate back in Imperial Beach. I do this because I can only resort to incredibly petty and wimpy behavior. So if you want to get cheated out of your money. Take a good look at my face. Do I look a criminal to you? Probably not.
PS: Did I mention I'm a big guy? 6 ft1 , I love talking about how "big and bad" I am but I'm terrified of short women that grab me by the hair and toss me out the door. Ouch...
(Public Service Announcement Enjoy)

i think all they need to do is incorporate a photo. events such as cannes require you upload a photo when registering. the badge you receive is like a drivers license. they have security at all entrances who just check to make sure the picture matches the person.

including a photo might be the next step, but the only problem i see is it would really slow down the process of letting everybody into the convention center.
this year im curious how well the whole RFID process will slow things down. especially when 1st using your badge at the convention center, because if it doesnt work you can't get into the convention center and will have to go to customer service.

aside from the first day of WonderCon- the rfid system was seemless
