Title: SDCC 2017 Volunteering Thread
Post by: Angology on July 25, 2016, 06:22:45 PM
Please use this thread to discuss volunteering at Comic-Con 2017 or ask questions about volunteering in general.

(Battling post con blues by starting the ball rolling for 2017!) :)

So Jan. we all will hear something about returning, right? Thinking this by looking at the 2015 and 2016 threads and when new volunteers can sign up.

This year will be my first time around. I have school though in the mornings during the New Volunteer sign up, so hopefully I will be able to get in!

Sorry if this can be found elsewhere but when does the volunteer interest list usually open up?  I have some friends I'm been trying to get to start joining us in SDCC but money is an issue so was thinking this could be an option for them. Thanks in advance.

I think it's around January/February usually? It's about the time after volunteer vets confirm their return.

If they have never signed up, the Interest List, where you get put on the email, should open before the year is out.  Last year, for 2016, the List opened up on Sept 30 http://www.friendsofcc.com/forum/index.php?topic=5518.msg134173#msg134173  and lasted over 10 days.  Make sure they have a Member ID now!

Then, watch for the actually sign up in the early part of the year...

I'm curious, what's the appeal in volunteering? Comic-Con is one of few "vacations" I take each year and I don't really see why someone would want to work through it.

It depends on the person. For me, I've always like being involved - usually behind the scenes stuff is my jam. Volunteering is really fun - this year was the first time I didn't do a precon shift and it's actually the most fun I've had in the 3 years I've been volunteering. The people make it a great atmosphere so it never feels like work and really, all I did was work the attendee reg this year (the people who handed you your lanyard, bag etc). Besides, to me it's only 3 hours and they give you a free day which is nice. For my Canadian friend, the conversion rate isn't too great so volunteer is a good alternative if your budget is tight.

I've literally met volunteers who were surprised I had a badge and still chose to volunteer. Either they were never able to get a badge or they just didn't wanna spend the $ and volunteering is how they get in every year.

The Interest List usually opens up before the year is over -- last year it was September -- as SamTurtledove pointed out. Overall, it should pop up sometime in the fall.

Do take note, last year, registration (the Feb. one) stayed open for almost 2 hours. It was weird but I'm guessing no PN was the reason. I doubt it will happen again but it could.

It is easy work (though still be at your best), and the time you pick/get, you are still able to enjoy the Con. I did by selecting a certain time that made it possible, which I won't say online. >:D You also make new friends, work with your buddy, and get a cool free shirt. You can still do Hall H on Saturday, btw. I know two (2) that did Hall H on Saturday before heading for a later shift, so you can still have that vacation, just make sure you want to volunteer. I enjoyed it and can't wait for next year.

You only have to volunteer 3 hours per day and then you get the rest of the day for free. There’s a lot of flexibility (i.e. signing up for a particular shift is not required that far ahead of time) and they usually work with you on timing, it’s very possible you can volunteer and see what you want (as long as it’s not something that requires spending all day in line). Also, if you’re lucky/quick enough to get a pre-con shift then you can get an entire other day for free. This year I volunteered on Wednesday (pre-con) for 3 hours and chose my free day on Friday where I spent all day (10 AM to Midnight...14 hours) in the convention center in the Exhibition Hall or in panels. 14 hours to enjoy the con in exchange for 3 hours of my time...not a bad ratio. On top of that, you don’t have to pay a cent and get a nifty T-shirt.

If nothing else, it’s another chance to get in if you miss out/don’t get the preferred days during the general sale. (As long as you’re willing to go all in -- As Mario Wario said, the work is not that difficult, but you should still be at your best.)

In the past, they have said that volunteers in good standing are invited back and do not need to sign up for the interest list.

Do they indicate anywhere if you are in good standing/will be invited back? While my supervisor seemed very happy with our group, I ask because the interest list closes before they send out the invitations to returning volunteers, so if for some reason I don’t get an invitation I want to be eligible for regular volunteer registration.

This was my 3rd year volunteering and the most days I've ever participated. I did 3 days this year due to only able to buy a Sunday badge. That's the main reason why I volunteer, plus the other perks you get. A friend volunteered for the first time this year, he enjoyed and will do it again, his cousin as well will try. I always try to pick a different job/location to work my 3 hours so I can a different view of SDCC. I plan to volunteer any days that I don't get a badge for as long as I attend SDCC. One thing I like about it is that it's only 3 hours, free badge for the day, free t-shirt and pick any time during the day. Best part you can decide what time to volunteer after after the full panel scedule is posted, because you do not register until you arrive.

Other conventions that I'd like to volunteer at require you to do it everyday or work at least 6 hours, that's a lot and takes up half a day at the con.

Unless you had any issues with department managers or staff, you should be fine.  If you did a satisfactory or excellent job during a volunteer shift and turned in your "S" card (volunteer shift cards), you can just wait for the returning/priority volunteer sign-up.  That happens at least a week or two before the first-time volunteer sign-up.

Also, if you were a volunteer before, you do not need to join the interest list for new volunteers.

Hope that helps.  ^__^d

To add to what [member=317]Zero[/member] said, lets put it this way. You should have some idea if you did poorly or there was a problem. Usually your volunteer shift lead or the head of the department you worked your shift for (who took care of your S Card,) will let it be known if there were problems. If you hadn't heard anything when your shift was done, and you checked-out, then chances are you're fine and will be invited back. Very rarely will anything negative regarding your volunteer status be done behind your back. I'm not saying it's never happened, since I don't know about every volunteer, but most likely you'll be told to your face if there was a problem during your shift.

Are they generally forgiving if there is *a* mistake, or something the staffer agreed you weren't totally at fault for?  I posted this in the 2016 thread, but I made an error when I worked a shift with Autographs and was standing in line in place of a handicapped person.  I drew for the person, then the WB rep asked if I would like to draw for myself as well; in total Auto-pilot mode I did and got a wristband as well.  I was released early after a staffer spoke with me about the wristband (since I'd shown it to other volunteers and it was seen by another staff person), but when I apologized for making the error I was told it wasn't my fault and that the WB people had been making those sorts of errors all morning.  (I still felt bad, and asked that staffer to relay my apologies to the one who had told him to speak with me.)  Other than that I had no issues during this year's SDCC.

You're probably fine. Though, don't take what I say as gospel, since it's a very subjective thing. If you were under my watch, I'd let you go. Most likely ANY and EVERY volunteer in your place would have taken a draw for themselves as well if given the chance. Most volunteers probably don't even know the rules, that on shift, you're not supposed to participate in drawings (or anything else that would benefit) yourself, unless otherwise specifically told it was okay by the volunteer lead and/or department head that you're on shift for.

When you say you were "released early," was that because your shift was over? Or because of the drawing snafu? I still say you're probably fine, but if you were released early due to you drawing for the autograph, then there might be a problem. I would say again, they probably would let you know to your face. But everyone and every situation is different.

I agree...that Spock volunteer shirt was spectacular.  I think SDCC could have sold a ton of those shirts and made a stack of money for the non-profit organization.

Carlo is correct.  The Volunteers Department will only allow you to do one shift a day.  One shift for one daily badge is how it works.

If I remember correctly, first time volunteers that are on the interest list are sort of a first come, first served basis, right? Also, doesn't it take place like 10:00 in the morning on a weekday?

What do you mean first come, first served basis? If you're lucky enough to get your name/Member ID onto the interest list, then SDCC will alert you to when the volunteer system opens-up. Then, only those who joined the interest list will be able to sign-up to volunteer when the system allows it. Once you're accepted as a volunteer, then you wait in line at SDCC to get a shift based on what time you prefer.

As for times, 1pm is traditionally when you sign-up at SDCC for the next day's shift.  Hope that helps!

I meant more of the First Time registration for new Volunteers that takes place after Returning Volunteers sign up.

First-time volunteer sign-up works like this, and generally, there is a limited amount of time before the new volunteer quota is met.  (You can consider it as being first-come, first-served in the sense that once there are enough new volunteers signed up, CCI does close new volunteer registration.)

You have to log into your Member ID (provided that you did sign up for the volunteer interest list prior to that).  Then, you fill in the volunteer registration form through your account, check some boxes acknowledging terms and conditions as well as marking if you are interested in doing a pre-con shift (actual pre-con shift sign-up comes much closer to con), and submit the form.  It's quite a short process, but you do have to pay attention to the e-mail announcements about this, or you'll miss it out on it.

Hope that helps a bit.  :]

I can't speak for the volunteer interest list for new volunteers but I checked my email and for priority volunteers (those that successfully worked a shift in 2015) I did receive an email to sign up for 2016 on January 25th.

They don't send an e-mail about signing on the interest list you have to check regulary the volunteer part of comic-con.org. Once on the interest list they will send you an e-mail telling when the volunteer registration is.

Just got an email about the 2017 SDCC Volunteer Interest List for those interested!  :)

"Dear Prospective Volunteer

We said we would let you know when the signups for the 2017 Comic-Con International Volunteer Interest List would be open. This email is to let you know that we plan to open tomorrow, Tues Nov 15, 2016 at noon. Date and time is subject to change, but that is what we are shooting for.

You must have a Member ID to get on the Interest List. Log into your Member ID and click on the “Volunteering” tab. You will see the Interest List link when it goes live.  If you do not have a Member ID, go to the home page of our Web site, www.comic-con.org, and click on the link in the upper right hand corner that says “Click here to sign up for or log into Member ID” and then click on “New Member ID” and follow instructions.

Remember, being on the CCI Volunteer Interest List does not guarantee that you will get into the volunteer program, but at least you have a chance to apply.  Good luck!

Sue Lord
Director of Volunteer Services"

Yes, I signed up for the interest list last year and though I made the volunteer list I unfortunately couldn't make it. I'm guessing that's what it is (interest list from 2016), I was surprised to get an email!

Question when they said 12pm are they automatically referring to 12pm PST?

That makes a lot of sense. It's nice to them to give you the heads up.

Yes, when CCI says a time, they mean Pacific time (which is where their offices are located).

Can anyone comment on how long the interest list usually remains open for? Curious if its something my friend will have to sign up for right away or if they can do it later in the day.

Maybe someone could back me up on this. Last year it stayed open for a few hours, but I've heard in previous years that it filled up pretty quickly. If your friend has time, I'd suggest just doing it around the time it becomes available.:)

I believe what you are referring to is the actual signup for volunteer positions. It is my understanding that what will be opening up later on today is the INTEREST list.
it is **not** a guarantee of a volunteer position. As such, there isn't a need to close it down once a small number is reached.  This is not to say folks shouldn't apply asap because it could be shut down without warning.

Sorry if this can be found elsewhere but when does the volunteer interest list usually open up?  I have some friends I'm been trying to get to start joining us in SDCC but money is an issue so was thinking this could be an option for them. Thanks in advance.

I'm curious, what's the appeal in volunteering? Comic-Con is one of few "vacations" I take each year and I don't really see why someone would want to work through it.
Just a bump up for previous posters @Matthew9543 @tsnyder @Resin to have you and your friends ready for the first day of sign up to the Interest List.

Updated

http://comic-con.org/cci/volunteers

The Comic-Con 2017 Volunteer Interest List is now open! To sign up, log into your Comic-Con Member ID account, select the “Volunteering” tab, and follow the link to the Interest List. Space is limited and the Interest List will fill up quickly!

In early 2017, everyone on the Interest List will get an email notifying them of the date and time that they can register online to volunteer.  Comic-Con volunteer registration will stay open for two weeks only.

Priority volunteers (those who completed volunteer assignments at Comic-Con 2016) will be accepted first. Remaining applicants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis until the volunteer program limit has been reached. All registration submissions will be date and time stamped. Those who have been accepted will be notified by email.

Being on the Comic-Con Volunteer Interest List does not guarantee that you will get into the volunteer program, but it gives you an opportunity to apply.

of note;

Quote
Signing up for the Volunteer Interest List does not guarantee you a spot in the Comic-Con 2017 volunteer program, you must still sign up when online registration opens in early 2017. By signing up for the Volunteer Interest List, you will be notified via email when online volunteer registration opens. The registration date and time will not be published anywhere online, and you will only be notified via email. Registration is filled on a first come, first served basis so please be sure to sign up with a permanent email account and check it frequently.

NOTE: If you completed at least one volunteer assignment for Comic-Con 2016, do NOT sign up for the Volunteer Interest list. You will automatically be notified via email when priority registration opens in early 2017 for returning volunteers.

The Comic-Con 2017 Volunteer Interest List could potentially fill up while you are in the process of signing up. If you successfully sign up for the Volunteer Interest List, you will receive a confirmation screen and a green notice will appear in the upper right hand corner of your Member ID account that says "CCI'17 Volunteer Interest List" If you do not see this notification after you sign up, you are NOT signed up for the Volunteer Interest List.

Saw the returning volunteer status before the shut down, but wise to recheck after system comes back.

Quote
You are eligible for Priority Volunteer Registration Because you successfully completed a volunteer assignment at Comic-Con 2016, you are eligible for Priority Volunteer Registration for Comic-Con 2017. You do not need to add yourself to the Volunteer Interest List.

Those eligible for Priority Volunteer Registration will have the first opportunity to sign-up to volunteer before we open registration to those on the Volunteer Interest List. This does not mean that you are currently registered as a volunteer for Comic-Con 2017. You must still successfully register when Priority Volunteer Registration opens in early 2017.

edit: I was helping a first-timer with her Member ID sign up and saw the note in her info tab this morning.  I'm not sure exactly when the list reached capacity.

The time span was longer this year vs. last year, although that may not be a sign of any increased capacity for this year or indicate how competitive the actual volunteer registration day will fan out!

Interesting. While everything SDCC usually sells out/fills up quicker and quicker, that wasn't the case this year for Interest List capacity AND last year for the actual volunteer sign-up. (Where it lasted 2+ hours rather than minutes as before.) I've been suspecting over the last year or two that SDCC is reaching somewhat of an equilibrium point. It will still be crazy for awhile, but it won't get crazier. Although, we'll have to see if anything else backs this up or if these were just flukes.

Im attempting to volunteer for SDCC this year and am on the interest list . My question is when signing up to volunteer can you sign up multiple people under one account login (if they are on the interest list too) or do you have to do both of them separate?

Each person has to sign into his or her Member ID and sign up separately.  You can't sign up to volunteer anyone else other than yourself.

I detailed the basic process earlier in this thread so you can have an idea what to expect.  Hope this helps!

So i clicked on the Wondercon Volunteer sign up to see what the form looked like. My question is , Is the sign up for SDCC the same form setup as the wondercon one?

In my experience as a volunteer for a while now, it's pretty similar, now that they are using the Member ID system for volunteer sign-ups for both conventions.  I think if you did the WonderCon volunteer sign-up, it will look familiar to you when you do the Comic-Con one.

Hope that helps! ^__^d

not to burst anyone's bubble but just an FYI. Yes the sign up for volunteering is the same for SDCC as it is for Wondercon. The difference is that the popularity is so that there is an interest list and from the interest list the newbs are chosen.  The bad news is that the list is closed. Meaning that that ship has already set sail for 2017. That list happened in November. there are still other ways of getting in aside from the general sale and pre reg but this one is not one for this year. Sorry

Good question, ha ha.

Well, priority volunteer registration (basically "returning" volunteer registration) needs to happen first, and then new volunteer registration occurs shortly after that.  In the past, they've given priority volunteer registration a timeline of around two weeks or so to check in and sign up before new volunteer registration begins.

My guess would be sometime in mid-March or early April at the rate we're going right now, possibly before open/general registration.

I hope so. Would be one less thing to worry about.

So it looks like the volunteer registrations (Priority and Interest List) will happen in early April because of IT upgrades. Someone emailed CCI about it and then told the Unofficial Blog about it.

Question for returing volunteers: does the tab for volunteers say you are on the priority list? I was pretty sure when i checked this back in November it showed my priority status but now I don't see it......  :blank:

Depending on how Returning Reg goes this year, I may be volunteering this year.  While I have volunteered four times in the past, 2000 - 2003, I know that the system has been updated and it is much more complex.  Volunteers used to be allowed to choose shifts and split them, does this still happen?  I am imagining not but I want to double check.

I am eligible for priority volunteer registration for SDCC 2017 and this is what is says in the volunteer tab for my member ID account:

"Comic-Con International 2017
Volunteer Interest List
Comic-Con International: San Diego
OK   You are eligible for
Priority Volunteer Registration
Because you successfully completed a volunteer assignment at Comic-Con 2016, you are eligible for Priority Volunteer Registration for Comic-Con 2017.

You must still successfully register when Priority Volunteer Registration opens in early 2017."

Question...

I qualify for 'Volunteer Interest List'.  If I'm able to be a volunteer, do I already have to have a badge, or is it separate from Open Registration.

Once you get into the program, or rather, if you do, you do not need to buy a badge in the Open Sale unless you want to. And yes, the system for both is separate.

Being a volunteer and having a volunteer badge is separate from the attendee badges (from the returning registration and open registration sales).  They are two different systems and databases.

If you're on the volunteer interest list, then you will be notified when volunteer registration will be opened up, but it doesn't mean you have a volunteer badge just yet.

Think of it as being halfway there, now that you're on the interest list.  The next part is staying vigilant about checking your e-mails.  When that volunteer sign-up announcement comes out, make sure to log into your Member ID account to register as new volunteer for Comic-Con 2017 as soon as possible.  Volunteer registration, once its open, could close at any time without notice.

On the other hand, for priority/returning volunteers, since they are already in the volunteer system, as long as they log in and do the necessary registration steps before the deadline, they are basically guaranteed a (volunteer) badge.

Hope that helps!

However, now that returning (attendee) registration is over and done with, I bet things will be kicking into high gear very soon.

Title: Re: SDCC 2017 Volunteering Thread

I think at this point, who knows. The volunteer reg is in 2 steps. First they will open it for Priority Volunteer Reg(which means people who volunteered last year) for a few days. Then that closes and they open it to Volunteer Interest List people. It would be good to have it before, then people know if they need badges or not in General Reg

Personally, I think it will happen before general registration, but I do agree with [member=2226]Mel[/member] that things could be up in the air, especially since returning registration ended up being pushed back this time around.  Still crossing my fingers for volunteer registration to occur very soon though! ^__^;

My question is about shift selection for new voluneteers - Someone mentioned you can sign up for a 'pre-con shift '.  I think I also read somewhere that volunteers sign up for a shift at the con on the day they for which they have volunteered.  I tried to look at the SDCC info link from last year, but that info is gone.  What is the process for signing up for a shift, once you have been accepted as a volunteer?

Oh...one more question.  Can a disabled person sign up as a volunteer?

For shift selection, after you registered in person, give them the papers you signed, you go to another spot in the same room to get your shift. They will ask you what time of the day you want. Once done, they will give you your card that tells you what time to check in and the shift you are doing. Btw, get a shift done before 130pm, you can sign up for the next day. Otherwise you just wait a certain amount time to sign up for the next day. Nothing to worry about really. Very easy process and people are around if you need help. And yes, a disabled person can sign up as a volunteer.

When you sign up during Volunteer Registration, in the past, there is a check box you click if you are available for a Pre-Con volunteer shift. About 2 weeks iirc before Con they will send emails to all the people who checked that box and the email will contain a link to a Google Doc that you then go to and enter your availability for Pre-Con. It will likes Mon, Tue and Wed and then blocks of time they need people during those days. You enter all your are available for and submit. Then they assign those shifts on a first submitted, first assigned basis. About a week before Con then you will get a simple email with your Pre-Con assignment. It will tell you the time to report and you just show up and they will then shuffle you to whatever you have been assigned for, which you won't know until you show up.

I've had pre-con shifts the past two years and it's nice to get one done and over with, but last year was a bit of madness b/c my shift was on Wednesday at 11am and the line was SO FULL of people just lining up to get a shift for Thursday I almost missed my shift b/c apparently they yelled for people with a shift in the next hour and I couldn't hear it. I stood in that line for an hour and finally at 11am I went to someone and told them I have a shift that supposed to start RIGHT NOW and they pulled me to the front where I was checked in and sent to another line that was moving slow too. At the end I was 30 min "late" for my shift but it wasn't my fault as I had arrived over an hour early. I don't know that I would do a Wednesday shift again b/c of this. Or if I do, be a lot more vocal and pro-active b/c they can be very disorganized and if you are waiting for someone to tell you what to do, DONT.

The lines are always crazy, Wednesday or otherwise. I wouldn't suggest basing it off of that negative experience. I always suggest people do pre-con shifts if their schedule allows for it. To me they are so fun and less stressful. I've met and made a ton of close friends now due to them. Obviously, we even met because of it. I think when we met, I was still sane and normal, and probably still in "fun" mode.

I have been volunteering for more than 5 years and i love it. I'm not too picky when it comes to jobs, my one request is to not to do line management. I'm too much if a pushover and if someone wants to give me a hard time i am going to crumble. I've seen some attendees get out of line when they are not allowed into lines. So i'll just stick to everything else.

So it looks like Returning Volunteer Reg will happen April 12-21, according to the Unofficial Blog. Btw, CCI states in a auto reply that the Priority email notice went out on April 5th. Clearly no one got it and I'm thinking something went wrong on their end. Even the Blog is thinking that, too.

Anyway, we have the dates.

Beginning at 10:00 AM Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) on Wednesday April 12, 2017, online volunteer registration for Comic-Con International 2017 will be open to our PRIORITY VOLUNTEERS (those who completed at least one assignment in 2016 or were pre-approved by the Volunteer Dept.).

If you're a new volunteer and you're on the interest list, I'd say try and sign-in as close to the start time as possible to guarantee your position as a staff member. It seemingly closes earlier and earlier each year.

Just posting a friendly reminder that Priority Volunteer Registration is happening today at 10am PST. No need to rush at 10am, since, if under this category, you have until April 21st.

Just did it.

Easy peasy. Login to MemberID, go to Volunteer Tab, click on Priority Volunteer Registration Link. Enter contact info, click on "I have read.." box, click on "Available before Con" box (if applicable), then at the end, print out your Volunteer Confirmation.

Got it done as well. As expected, very easy to do. Now unlike last year, I checked the pre-con box this time. I'm getting there on Monday, so why not.

So I am all done with the reg stuff--already got my 4-day with PN in the Open Reg and now I have this done, too. Volunteering is fun and regardless having all the days already, I don't mind helping out at all.

Last year, I was able to get a refund for a purchased day that I ended up volunteering on. If policies haven't changed, you should be able to do the same.

It shouldn't be. I know a few people on Twitter were getting server issues, so maybe CCI is fixing that?

Has anyone ever volunteered before SDCC starts? What was it like? What was your job? Did you find advantage in so it? If you do a double shift (6 hours) does that get you 2 days of badges or still just one?

I have done pre-con shifts before, and most of them related to helping out with sone form of registration (handing out souvenir booklets, lanyards, and WB bags at Attendee Registration; helping attach lanyards to Pro or Press badges and then handing out bags, etc.).  Some people have also assisted with set up of certain areas, like Art Show, or did line control for Ballroom 20 or Attendee Registration.

I have had a pre-con shift doing all of the above before. ^__^d

Hope that helps.

I used to always volunteer before SDCC started. Something changed, and so I cannot do so anymore. But it was a great time. I think I posted my experience before on these boards. I actually met one of the members of the board accidentally while she was doing a pre-con shift. There are advantages and disadvantages to working earlier. It depends where you live. If you'll be in the area already, then it could be beneficial. I wouldn't intentionally book a hotel an extra day for that for instance. I don't live too far, so I can just drive in.  When I did the pre-con shifts, a double shift wasn't an option. I don't remember it even being one the last few years, but that I could be mistaken on. Even though I only got a single day badge, I worked pretty much the entire day, instead of a standard shift. I enjoyed volunteering, and so I gave them my entire day. Many who know me, know I've done a ton of SDCCs. And so, I don't care that much anymore for panels or even the exhibit hall. I'll check them out, but I tend to enjoy working and giving back. Helping a lot of the newbies and new volunteers out.

I personally love it. But I will say, it's VERY different. What you do pre-con is nothing like the actual con. I guess I should preface that by saying, it depends on the day you get. You have the possibility of handing out bags and working registration, but from when I did pre-con, it was always setup, registration (not not badges just paperwork,) and a few extraneous jobs. But like I said, I enjoyed it. Things were calmer, you actually got to meet people and talk to people, and you didn't have others yelling at you or looking down on you. (Which I've had during regular volunteer shifts.)

If you do a pre con shift, do you still get a badge for comic con? And when do pre con shifts begin? I live nearby San Diego ( two hours away) And I'll be on "vacations" so may be I could go for the day for a pre con shift and go back home, before staying in San Diego for the con itself

Yes, you get a badge, in fact, you get to choose what day you want to redeem you pre-con badge. The earliest pre con shift I had was either 8 or 9am and that was on a Tuesday but I would imagine it would depend on what you put yourself as available.

It's already been answered about getting a badge, but you also have to get accepted for a pre-con shift. In the past, you could mark as being available, but until they grant you the pre-con shift, it's not a guarantee. So hopefully you get lucky and get picked for the pre-con shift, but it too has been getting harder and harder to come by. With the removal of Town & Country registration, that was a big pre-con shift that has been removed.

In the past, even Monday has been an option, but I know lately, it's less likely to have volunteer shifts that early in the week. I think my earliest was 9am. It's so quiet and empty then!

no, you need to complete one shift in good standing. to get a shift you  need to go to the volunteer area & sign up.  typically, folks go the day before.  for example, if i wanted a shift on Saturday, i would go to the volunteer area on friday, and tell them when i could work on Saturday.

You don't pick the days today. You are only signing up for the program. If you get in, fast enough, once at San Diego, that is when you pick your shift/day--checking in. The department will tell you what to do in an email. Very easy; pretty much what Alyssa has said.

Tried for years and finally got in. I'm glad I didn't wait until 10, the list opened early.  I was just maddeningly hitting the member id button, having it say it was closed and then the back button.  Rinse and repeated.  Then it let me in about 3 minutes before it was supposed to have opened.  YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

And can I also say that I love how people are fighting for the effort to give back to the con we all love?  ^-^

Hi everyone, so this will be my first time volunteering and I do not know how the process works. I have a couple questions;:

- Are they sending another email regarding the volunteer check-in location and volunteer shift dates?
- How many day badges do you get after volunteering per day?
- How early should I arrive for the volunteer check-in on the first day of SDCC?
- When do they start teaching you/giving you directions on what to do?

I might have questions later, so I'll ask as the days go by, thank you

There should have been a link to a document in your CCI confirmation that would answer some of your questions.
The same document will be emailed to you.  Check your spam. If you don't get the email within 24 hours, contact CCI...

regarding badges and days.  Last year you we're given one badge, which got verified for each day you work.  We had a volunteer on Saturday Hall H who had a late Saturday assignment, who went to verify his badge on Saturday morning, to make sure his RFID had been verified for that day, and returned to our long morning line). :

Carlo is correct.  The Volunteers Department will only allow you to do one shift a day.  One shift for one daily badge is how it works.

The volunteer department will send you a barcode email about two weeks before the convention.. the basic steps of that email should be the same as last year's

Sorry but you are not allowed to view spoiler contents.

a post about shift selection:

For shift selection, after you registered in person, give them the papers you signed, you go to another spot in the same room to get your shift. They will ask you what time of the day you want. Once done, they will give you your card that tells you what time to check in and the shift you are doing. Btw, get a shift done before 130pm, you can sign up for the next day. Otherwise you just wait a certain amount time to sign up for the next day. Nothing to worry about really. Very easy process and people are around if you need help. And yes, a disabled person can sign up as a volunteer.

a post about precon:

You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

As postulated by SDCC Unofficial Blog on Twitter...Usually volunteer reg is before Gen Reg so people sign up to hedge their bets. This year with Gen Reg already past people know they have their badge, so maybe  that's why.

I agree with this. I'm also going to add that last year it stayed open for around two hours last year if I remember correctly. A couple people suggested that most people lost interest after they stopped allowing volunteers to have Preview Night, but I'm not really sure I believe that.

I see that they are charging a 10% precessing fee to refund your previously purchased badge even if you are volunteering and just got into the volunteering pool. I think if you are volunteering, and you already purchased a badge, it would be nice if the refunding processing fee was waived.  Oh well.

Might CCI re-open the Interest List to the general public if several days go by with slots still available?

Would mean revision of: "Volunteer registration is not open to the general public, only those on the Priority and Interest Lists."

good point, but I can also see folks not wanting to refund any days on the off chance a good panel occurs on that day.

That said, if I see folks on social media complaining how hard it is to get into Comic-Con 2017, I will point to this--as in, how long the program is staying open for new volunteers. In general, researching is the key to beat that spinning blue circle.

Just get there when you can/when it is open to check-in. Want to line up sooner? That's fine, just make sure it's ok to do so. After that, getting a shift, you will get a card that will tell you what time to return. Just do your best once the shift begins--that's it.

Hello!

This is my first time at SDCC, and I'm super excited! I have been trying to get a badge via GEN REG for four years with no success. I read about volunteering and decided to try for both GEN REG and volunteering; nothing in GEN REG, but becoming a volunteer happened! I'm freakin' out, and have many questions. Thankfully, I found this place; thank y'all so much!

However, I do have questions unanswered:

- While volunteering, am I allowed to take any swag? Meaning, if there's free stuff being given out, am I allowed to take it or no?

- I saw in the disclosure that no pictures can be taken of anything associated with SDCC (including badges). How can I document my experience?

I might have more questions later (sorry, I'm anxious), but for now any help y'all may provide would be appreciated. I want things to go smoothly and to be able to return to do this again; sounds like major fun!

Thank you in advance!

1. Do that before or after your shift. Anyway, you will be too busy with your shift, so focus on that later (or again, before).

2. When in doubt, do it before or after your shift, but you can talk about your experience. I see why not--as in, it's not Area 51 stuff, unless noted.

Overall, just relax; no reason to freak out about it. But I get it, it's the unknown, I was there before; however, they are not asking anyone to do anything hard. Just do your best/follow the rules--that's it.

Btw, have fun being at SDCC!

Yep! Now I will say that they, the staff members I met, do recommend leaving anything important at your hotel room or, if possible, have it on you. All about playing it safe and using your cell phone, it depends on the shift. For example, helping people that need it with any ticket drawing in Sails, you will use your phone to be in contact with the person you're helping. Also to be in contact with a staff member in case your shift is about to end, if the drawing hasn't happened yet.

I've never worked the swag room, but I did hand out bags last year on Sunday. I think it just depends on the day too, because it was the last day of the con, things were more lax so after our shift was over, we were allowed to pick a bag we wanted, which was nice. I've heard similar experiences with the swag room either on the last day or at the end of a day too.

I think the badge thing is more of don't get your info stolen and stuff (like people who take pics of their badges and post online) thing.

I wouldn't take anything while on your actual volunteer shift -- UNLESS the shift leader tells you can (i.e. at the end of your shift.) But if you are on your free day/free time, go for it.
Same with taking pictures.

I can see if ur on the clock or on the job doing ur job then u wait till after or before ur job stat or maybe last day and ask what u can have so to speak , but as a first timer as well volunteer i learned form others to ask first if u can do something if u not sure at time so u dont ruin a chance to volunteer next year. that is how i see it so to speak.

That's basically it.  If you have questions during your shift, you can ask one of the staff members in charge of the area you are assigned to.  Or, if an attendee asks you a question that you can't answer, flag down a staff member to help and deal with the issue (so they can give that person the correct answer, instead of you trying to come up with one that you may not know).  For the most part, they give you instructions on what to do, so you'll be fine.

As for any swag, Mario covered it earlier.  Before or after your shift, you may be able to ask one of the staff, but remember that you're not there for swag or whatever it is they may have for attendees or other badge types.  You're there to provided support and help for the department you are assiged to as well as see a small glimpse of how it works behind-the-scenes while working to earn a badge for that day.

Do a good job, and sometimes, the staff you work with may end up rewarding you if they see you working hard to help them.

^__^d

Last year, the Pre-Con sign up went out on July 1 and they sent out the assignments July 7. (Preview Night was July 20.)

Thanks, it's two relatively stress-less months then. :D

Hello, everyone!

I have a question that I hope someone can help with.  I'm a San Diego resident and I've been attending Comic-Con since 1982.  I was a volunteer with Exhibitor Registration in the late 90's for a few years.  Other than that, I've been going as an Attendee or Press.  I decided to volunteer this year to give back to the event that's given me so much joy over the years.  And I wanted to do it while I'm still young enough.   ;)

My question is this: I clicked on the "Available before con" box.  I would love to start as soon as possible.  If you get your volunteer work done before the show starts, are you then able to go to the con with a four day badge?

Thanks in advance.

And while I'm here, I would like to thank everyone who's contributed to this site.  It's been an incredible wealth of invaluable information.

Thank you, folks!  Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend!

I'm not 100% what you're asking. I'll answer both ways I read your question and see if I'm right or wrong. Pre-Con shifts usually start Monday the earliest, but usually Tuesday or Wednesday. So the most you could get would be 2 free badges. There is technically no limit as to how little you volunteer. So you could go with only one shift say Wednesday morning, and then you're done. After that, you can then use your normal 4 day badge and attend all the days of the con, and still be part of the volunteer system from then on.

If I haven't answered your question properly, please clarify, and I will respond again!

As far as I know, you can only volunteer a single day before the con. So you can either volunteer on Tuesday, or on Wednesday. But not both.

I haven't done it in a few years now, but I know as of then, you could volunteer both. I've actually had shifts on Monday, Tuesday, AND Wednesday before the con before. But again, times change.

I've done pre-con the last 4 years and each of those years you just get one shift only and you can use that to get a badge for any day of Con you choose (except PN, no PN badges for vols anymore). You can only do one though.

That is sad, but I assume it's because it'd be unfair for one person to have that any pre-con shifts. But again, there used to be no limit.

I might be wrong, but i am told more are trying to volunteer now then fight for a badge at return and open sales for any badge at time. i am trying it since i have had chance to go in past years ago and so hoping all goes right so chance do again next and beyond.

Hmm interesting. My gut says more people are still trying for open registration. But I can't say for sure.

Why wouldn't it be both? Sign up in the volunteer interest list in the fall, then try for a badge at open reg, then if that fails, try for a volunteer spot. I would think that people who want to go will try any avenue they can. I know I would.

That's what I did.  I signed up for volunteer interest list last year.  I didn't get a badge at pre-reg, but got one at open as part of a buying group.   :)  Then when the volunteer list opened up, I signed up.  It's my first year doing that, so I'll see how it goes.

I have some ideas to what jobs there are from what i have read and can think of right now, but at first i was told they choose job for u and now i told u get to choose the job u wanna try if any spots are open when u arrive and get something to choose from or a form or something im guessing. and if chance to do again the next day if u not like the job u had first day u can try for a different job the next if chance to do it again. so i can only go by what i have read on this site and what i have read from others on another over the past months and all.

In recent years, my experience in volunteering is that you tell the shift scheduling person the time slot you would like to do, and then they'll give you a random assignment based on that.  It is possible to ask to do a certain assignment (or task), but it also depends on the availability of that shift for that day.  It's not always a guarantee, but it also depends on the person scheduling your shift.   They might just do it randomly and request your preferred time slot; they might not let you ask for a certain assignment because, truthfully, there are some tasks that everyone wants and will always try to get.

Sometimes, if a department manager likes your work ethic and your ability to get along with their staff members, they'll put in a request with the Volunteers Services Department to get you to volunteer with them on the next day.

I was told that you can ask for either a time slot OR a type of job, but not both. (Of course it's always dependent on what they have available, too). I always asked for a time slot, but if I ever have a day where I don't urgently need to go to something, I'll try asking for a type of job!

Right now I have more of an interest in helping out with panels, but As this will be my first time, I'm willing to do whatever they want me to do. I'm just happy to be there, and looking forward to the experience.

First year volunteering with a couple of questions. First, if I volunteer on Weds. before comic con starts, which day do I get a valid badge for? Second, if I don't get a shift until 5pm let's say. Is my badge valid that day or the next day? If it's the same day, does that mean it's only valid after my shift?

1. Which ever day you choose (except Wednesday.)
2. It is valid that day, including the part of the day before your shift too.

Helping out with panels is a pretty broad swath. There are multiple jobs that involve helping with panels. Some would be setup, which I must admit can be tiring and difficult, depending on what needs to be setup. There would be TRT (Talent Relations Team) where you may wait for, and walk with a celebrity, panelist, or someone else from their waiting area/green room to the floor/panel.

When you work a pre-con shift, you can request a badge for ANY day of the con. As for the valid badge, unless its a pre-con shift, the day you volunteer, is the day your badge is eligible for. Lets say you receive a 5pm shift, you'll get a badge for that day and can enjoy all of the con, until 5pm, in which you then have to show-up for your assignment. After that, you're free to do what you will. But being a 5pm shift, there probably won't be much con stuff to do, once your 3 hour shift is over.

Yes, they give you your badge when you register. They activate it for the day(s) that you volunteer.

Super late, like 9 pm? You can def volunteer after the floor closes. Some panel run run until midnight, so there's needs for volunteers during all of that.

The one caveat is, there are very few ultra late shifts vs regular shifts. So if it was me, I'd try and get there as close to 1pm to ask for as late an assignment as possible.

Not many people ever request shifts that late. I've been doing SDCC volunteering stuff for nearly a decade, rarely do people request those hours. Usually, people request the earliest shifts, so they can have the rest of the day.

Only sign up if you are able to do those times. I wouldn't do that (not show up) if you are selected. They don't like that. Someone will explain more about this, but again, don't miss any assignment you get before and during the con.

Edited by me. Hikanteki had the email that talked about what Loliiz wanted. Looks like I was given the wrong information last year. :/

Nothing. This is from last year's email of the actual pre-convention assignment:

You do not have to notify us if you are unable to do this assignment. It will not affect your volunteer status and you can still volunteer during the convention (Thurs-Sun). You may not send someone else in your place or bring anyone with you to volunteer.

However, if you go to the convention and actually take a shift in person, then you must show up or else be penalized.

Yeah, I was actually surprised when I read that in the email last year. The staff member may have mixed it up or just did not know the specifics since he/she probably did not have to register to volunteer & it does seem like a fairly subtle distinction. Maybe SDCC figures that since there are still a couple weeks out, availability/arrival times could change. Whereas if you go there and actually sign up for a shift the next day in person, they know you're definitely there.

SDCC has changed some of the rules on volunteering. This was one of them. In the past, you would be penalized if you didn't show-up for a pre-con shift. (If you signed up for one that is)

SDCC has changed some of the rules on volunteering. This was one of them. In the past, you would be penalized if you didn't show-up for a pre-con shift. (If you signed up for one that is)

It was like that some years ago where if you were a daily volunteer and you signed up for a pre-con shift, if you didn't show up for that shift, they would leave some sort of negative notation on your Member ID account.  (It's my understanding that it mostly had to do with merits for the volunteer, how the person's work ethic was, what kind of track record the volunteer had, etc.  In some cases, if they were late for or skipped out on too many pre-con shifts, the volunteer wouldn't be allowed to get any pre-con shifts in following years.)

It was recently or somewhat recently that they seem to have changed their policies to be slightly more lenient when it comes to pre-con shifts at least.  There are still a lot of policies that are the same though, like keeping records of shift check-in and attendance and so forth. ^__^;

I see volunteering as like a job even if u are not like getting paid but are paid with a badge to get into the con. i guess many try volunteer as a back up if cant get a badge, but i see if u cant show up for a shift then u should atleast try have a number u can call or text and say why u cant be there at time so they can call or ask anyone who can do a job and by chance be given some kinda bonus reward some how maybe. was just a thought and maybe feedback all the same.

I agree.  At a comic-con offsite I volunteered at in the past, a lot people didn't feel the same way.  I always stayed my entire shift and then some in most cases.  Most people would leave when they got bored.  One shift there were 10 of us in our little group when we started.  At the end, only 2 of us were left.  Our "reward" for volunteering, except for the glory, was a t-shirt.  They made the mistake of handing out the t-shirts at the start instead of at the end.

It should be easy for comic-con, don't show up or leave early and you don't get a badge for the day.  People should know by now whether they got a ticket or not and thus whether to sign up for a shift or not.

Can people that have pre-conned describe that the tasks will be?  Normally I'm up for anything, but I hurt one of my arms a couple of weeks back and now heavy lifting is out.  Not sure if I'll be healed in 3 weeks.

One year I helped distribute bags, lanyards and all that to the ppl with 4 day badges on Wednesday, back when it was on the Town and Country hotel, it was super fun. Best volunteer job I've done. Last year I helped with lines for those that had preordered the official T-shirt. Most of the time I just stood by a door and opened it or told ppl to leave thru the other door. It was easy, if a bit boring. This was on the new section of the hotel right next to the convention center, I forget it's name... Marriot maybe?

There are many different jobs. I have seen ones that involved lifting boxes, but I personally have never gotten that shift. The two I distinctly remember included tearing strips of tickets, and working on index cards that had information on them. Both of which involved sitting and doing things that don't require a ton of manual labor.

When I last did it, 8am and 10am were the ones I got offered. I know there were ones later, but I always chose the earliest shifts.

Last year I was assigned to Registration on Wednesday 6-9 PM. It did involve a lot of heavy lifting (we had to constantly move boxes out of the back room to keep the table stocked with programs, etc.) Some of our crew also stayed at the tables and handed things out. If you can't do heavy lifting, I am sure they will be willing to work with you to find something you are able to do, since the point of volunteering is not to exclude people.

As it turns out, I also got Registration on Sunday afternoon from 3:30-5 PM. (Nice short shift!) We did pretty much exactly the opposite; moving all the programs and boxes to the back and taking down the tables.

Signed up for a pre-con Monday or Tuesday shift this year.  Fingers crossed.

Last year had a Wednesday mid morning shift with several other volunteers at one of the outside entrances.   Our job was only to allow Press in.

Mostly easy gigs for me: most fun was helping manage the Weird Al autograph line. Really chill fans. Look to table, see it clear up, send some fans to the table.

Others:
stuffing SDCC freebie bags with schedules and program books
arrow "line this way" sign holder for one of the big rooms (Hall H or Ballroom 20): least fun (out in the hot sun)
crosswalk monitor behind the convention center: most stressful as some people don't listen/care about safety

I still wonder even though i have read comments different places but has it changed or do u choose the job and they give u a slot or vice versa as to say u choose slot and u just get a random job. so to like say u choose to stuff bags and they have u do job 2-5 i guess. not sure why i kinda stress it but not really , i just not wanna be stuck outside if it like a real hot day and all.

Usually they let you request a time slot, but not a specific task. However, if there are characteristics of a task that you require and have a good reason for (i.e. indoors, no heavy lifting, etc) then let the people assigning your shift know.

I missed pre-con to. :(  I'm hoping that there may be a last minute rush for people and maybe they will send out another batch of assignments.  Do they ever do that?

I'm also a volunteer virgin, but the way I understand it is that you get a pass for the day you work.  So if you work Thursday evening, you get a Thursday pass.  You can get an assignment after 1:30pm on Thursday to work Friday so you don't have to show up in the morning.  Once again, I'm a first timer as well so I don't know anything.

No you can't. You get the pass for the day you volunteer. And the earliest time you can pick a volunteer slot is the day before at 1pm(?if I remember right) (or after your shift previous day whichever is last). So you could get there Thursday a bit before 1 to sign up for the ideal Friday shift. I recommend super early so you can play after or later so you can play before or schedule around whatever panels. But note that late shifts would interfere with signing up for Saturday's shift.

There aren't a ton of pre-con shifts, so you shouldn't be bummed. It is what it is. The answer is no. You can only sign-up to work the day you want the badge for.

Question- Thanks in advance for any help.
This will be my first time volunteering and also first time ever at Comic Con.  I do not have a badge but live near San Diego and decided to join the fun.
I have a pre-con shift Wed19 afternoon at 4pm.  If I want to get a Thu20 volunteering assignment, can I do it on Wed19 before my pre-con shift or do I have to wait until after I completed the pre-con volunteer shift on Wed evening?  Thanks.

You can get your Thursday assignment before you complete your pre-con shift. They're not mutually exclusive. I always suggest to people, get your shift as soon as you can to have the best selection.

If I don't want to volunteer on Thursdays, do I just show up at the assignment desk after 1:30pm on Thursday for a Friday shift?  I'm thinking of making Thursday offsite day. From previous experience, the first day is the best day since the crowds are smaller. Saturday is a disaster.

You are 100% correct on everything you said. But I'd say, if you have time, show up slightly earlier than 1:30 to line-up to get the best assignments. But if you don't care, then yes, any time after 1:30.

First time volunteer here. My husband and I both received emails that we were scheduled for the Wednesday Previn shift. He got his barcode yesterday. I'm still waiting on mine. I started to panic a little when I saw a lot of other people on Facebook got their barcodes yesterday. Glad to see I'm not the only one who hasn't gotten it yet!

As far as i can tell, need print it and take with u along with any other print outs needed. It basically helps then to scan and find ur file or records they got to check u in faster i guess, hoping or guessing we all should have the email before start of con if possible or just gotta go and give what u have printed and give them time to check u in by finding u in the system so they can get all checkd and sorted to give u a badge for day then get a job that u do before or after u had chance to check out comic-con .

I have a pre-con shift on Wednesday and I plan on using that free day for Saturday. However, I'm thinking about not volunteering Thursday because I want to do all the offsite events. However, how can I get my shift for Friday if I'm not inside the convention center on Thursday? How does this work?

Volunteer registration is no longer in the convention center. It hasn't been for a couple of years now. It's located in the Marina Ballroom FG at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina hotel. So you won't need to be inside the convention center for any reason.

Depending how important your shift time would be, I'd say get there slightly earlier than 1pm. But it's up to you. If you don't care one bit, then show up any time pretty much.

Volunteer newbie here.  I've heard people say to ask for a good assignment.  How does one do that and what are the options?  I know it's all subjective, but what do people suggests as good assignments and times to ask for?

Times to ask for are based on what you want to do at the con. Nobody will have a good time to suggest because everyone's schedule is different. As for good assignments, the volunteer registration isn't supposed to assign based on assignment/task but by time. But occasionally they will do so. I've made some suggestions before, but it really boils down to what you like and what you don't like.

Looks like my plan to not volunteer on Thursday is out the window. I was going to make that my offsite day but one of the offsites I want to do is Westworld. They require a badge. Until I check in to volunteer, I won't have one. Maybe Friday will be offsite day then.

I have read about the barcode alot, and from what i can tell or understand is they use it to scan to find ur file or ur info in the database so can check u in and all. but if not got it then im guessing otehr ways they can check u in that it takes a few mins i guess to type in any info to find ur file instead of just scanning a barcode at the time. some are stressing no barcode but no need if not got at time with u i guessing. it just faster if got it with u at time is all to check in with rest papers gotta turn in at time.

If the vol badges were like last year they'll show all four days on them since it's an rfid badge. Just whatever day you don't do won't be activated. I am 99% sure the Westworld offsite will not be checking if it's activated but that you have an actual badge

I understand that but since Thursday is the first day and I didn't get a precon shift, if I don't volunteer Thursday then I won't have a badge period. That is unless I can register and get a badge on wednesday but just not sign up for a shift until Friday. Does anyone know if that's possible?

If you have volunteer status your badge will have all 4 days on it regardless if you have precon  or not. (Again this is what happened last year and I didn't have a precon shift ) You can pick up your badge on Wed and get a Thurs shift. You can only get a friday shift  on Thursday or Friday.

To my knowledge, you should be able to register (and get the badge) without signing up for a shift. It just won't be activated until you sign up for a shift. So just go in Wednesday.

Got my barcode this morning. Question, they warn that the line will be long in the morning and a lot of you have posted that a 2 hour wait is not unusual. The shift assignment said to show up 30 minutes before my shift. If I have to stand in the long line to volunteer register, should I plan on getting there a couple of hours before my shift. Do people who have a shift on Wednesday get priority in line?

I once volunteered in a panel room--my job was to open the exit doors for people leaving, prop them open when everyone streamed out at the end of the panel, and close them again for the next panel, and point out empty seats for latecomers. Pretty chill! I was almost given a job as a room counter, where you get a clicker and click it for each person that comes through the door, but I was wearing cosplay that day and apparently you're not allowed to do that job in cosplay. If I recall correctly, volunteering in the panels was called "front of house."

I think you can wear whatever as long as it's not offensive/excessively revealing! I saw a guy in a very complex costume (involving armor and an oversized sword and a boombox and a fan) show up for a shift and they came over to talk to him, but I think he did end up going off in a volunteer vest.

Hi Lanett, look for the email titled "Welcome to the Comic-Con 2017 Volunteer program." I received mine on April 12, 2017. Pages 10 and 12 are what you need signed and printed. Page 11, if you're a minor.

Yes. They will call out and ask people with a shift in the next 30 minutes to come to the front of the line. However, they don't always yelll this out very loud to where everyone can hear it. If your shift is in 30 minutes, tell someone there with CCI and they will take you to the front to get you checked in. You have to be proactive about it though in case you miss them calling out for it.

If you're a first year volunteer, look for your email from April 24-28th, depending on what day you signed up.  I think they will have the forms at check in, if you can't print them out.

It would be awesome if I could get panel duty so that I could kind of attend a panel at the same time. Not expecting it though, I looking forward to standing outside in the hot sun telling people not to walk this way. Expect the worst, hope for the best. Seriously, I think they should give the choice assignments based on seniority. Newbs like me should do the grunt work.

I asked the same. I didn't get an answer other then what's best for each person would be different. I wasn't looking for an absolute answer. I was looking for examples of what other people have done in a past so that I could get a feel for it.

I'm leaning towards night shifts, as in as late night as possible. Panels and offsites are over so it won't get in the way of that. Aren't the viewing rooms open until the wee hours? I don't mind being a minder making sure the kids don't get too rowdy watching animation. If there is such a thing as an animation room minder.

I dont think there is a best time even volunteering for a first time, unless u plan to see a panel anytime of the day. im gonna try get early shift if possible so have rest of day to cruize around and check out what i can, if can get something signed, collect swag i want most, and if can check out a panel i might wanna see. so choosing a time and knowing it be 3 hrs unless they let u go early for any reason based on what i have read or videos i seen, u gotta just check what plans u got and try fit 3 hrs of work or job into ur plans if that is ur like ticket to get in and enjoy the con.

Personally I tend to want my volunteer shift to be over soon enough for me to be able to get my next day's assignment that day! The best times to volunteer definitely depend on what you want to do--if I wasn't bothered, I think I would try doing a later shift.

If you want examples of things I've done, I volunteered at 5:30am and ended up minding the door to the volunteer room and sending people to the correct places; at 1:30pm I collected groups of 30 from the volunteer line outside and took them inside to register, then stood inside and helped direct people to the right desk after the whole line was brought inside; at 10am I was a rapid response volunteer and ended up being sent to the programming rooms; and at noon I took groups of volunteers from the volunteer room to their assignments. I just got given a lot of assignments at the volunteer room for some reason!

The best time would be the day before lol the rule is earlier the better but no matter what you are guaranteed a shift if you show up day of. The pick of shifts left only gets less desirable.

That's a relief, my office is not letting me go on Thursday, I am trying really hard to get Friday off, so I'll at least have three days there. I am okay with any task, as long as I get one.
Any volunteer, travelling from La-jolla may ping me I can offer a free ride to the Qualcomm stadium/Hazard center .

on the other side i had some trouble with time management & location issues /both lost & late/ before a shift & end up at the assignment desk 10 min after my shift was suppose to start. My time was shifted from 12:30 start to 1p
they really needed people tho- ymmv!

Where I was stationed we had too many people to start with and then more and more people kept coming. So a lot of people ended up standing around with nothing to do. Some of that had to do with the groups up to an hour before my shift being grouped in with my shift.

When you go to volunteer register, make sure to pickup your lanyard and bag. Also go back for your t-shirt. The person who checked me in wasn't that informative. She basically handed me my badge and that was it. I had to ask her where I checked in for my shift. I only got a general direction and then had to ask someone else. I figured out that I should get a bag and lanyard by watching others. I totally forgot about the t-shirt until I was on the trolley coming home and digging through the stuff in my badge pouch. Argh!!!! Today is a light swag day. It would have been the best day to carry it home. Tomorrow with all the offsite swag, the bag will be full.

Oh yeah, if you volunteered today. You can go back any day and claim your free day. Just go in the morning, hop in the short line, and get your badge activated. I asked around what the procedure was but no one was certain so I went back to the volunteer center and asked there. That's what they told me. It's good news. I thought we had to pick a day today. This way is super flexible. If the offsites are looking bad tomorrow, I might just activate it mid afternoon. There are some evening panels I wanted.

Oh yeah, if you volunteered today. You can go back any day and claim your free day. Just go in the morning, hop in the short line, and get your badge activated. I'm using my free day (for working Pre-Con) on Saturday. Volunteer desk guy told me I can come in Friday after 1pm to get Saturday activated on my Volunteer pass.

Good to know. I'll try the same. It would take up precious morning line waiting time to activate it the same day. I would worry they would activate it for that day. I wish the rule was posted online. Everyone seems to give a different answer.

Forgot to ask the volunteer desk today.. My wife and I both did Wed pre-Con shifts and we're getting a free Saturday out of it. Anyone know if I can pick up/activate free day for my wife at Volunteer check in (I'll bring her Volunteer pass with me)? Also, can I get her t-shirt ticket validated/stickered? She needs a mental health break from Comic Con tomorrow. ;-)

Yep, tried, to no avail. Oh, well. Was told she had to be there physically for them to validate Saturday for her. Hopefully, they could zoom her through the process to get her on the floor in a flash!

I did a pre-con shift on Tuesday this year, which was my first year volunteering.  There were some computer glitches and we were not able to get our normal paperwork to present to our supervisor. We had a bit of a challenge getting our shift added so that we could get our shirt and our free day.  Did anyone else who volunteered pre-con have computer glitch challenges?  It finally worked out, but it added hours of extra waiting and walking to various places to get it worked out.

I always just do pre-con and the only time I bothered to get the shirt was last year b/c it was Spock. It's always trouble. I don't know why they don't just check people in at pre-con shifts, but they don't ever and it makes things a mess.

I did a pre-con shift as well. Couldn't have gone smoother. On Thursday, I went to get my shirt and activate my free day for Friday. Doing both took less than a minute. There wasn't even a line.

By the way, what is the Sunday 11:30pm shift? They offered it to me but it was a little late. I forgot to ask what it was for. What's going on at 11:30 at night after the con is over that a volunteer can do?

What happened was that precon shifts were not loaded into the database. So on Tuesday and Wednesday they had to check precon shifts manually. And I believe there was only one binder with the hard copies. So each terminal operator would take your info to the supervisor, and usually there was a line, and then she would inform them of your precon shift. Mine was Wednesday so they had expedited the process. But it was still rather disorganized.

Well I am assuming you first went to the Marriot Marquis volunteer check-in and then you were sent to your shift? (You were in the sails pavilion registration and lanyards, bags pickup section if I am not mistaken?) When you arrived for your shift, or at the end, you gave your C-Card to the supervisor who then at the end of each shift sends all the C-Cards to the volunteer check-in at the Marquis to verify that you completed your shift. If you want the tshirt or need a free badge then you have to go back to the Marquis. For the tshirt they place a sticker on one detachable section of your volunteer badge that you surrender when you get your tshirt from the Hyatt.

I made sure to give card to staff on floor at time and exchange vest , then finally last day made sure get free shirt cause had duckie on card from days before but never checked in before i left san diego after i did shift and after i got shirt cause just remember last job was same as before so no need retrain, was todoki booth went well for most part and just had to give card  and explain job to replacemnet and find staff to return vest then made sure to get free shirt after and whatever else since was last day of con. didnt have to check in for a next day since sunday was last day so saved alot time to do other stuff tried to do and headed home. just gotta watch for any emails later for next year and plan ahead like before. so wasnt able to choose job but it wasnt so hard just had to deal with any traffic and random attitude but staff was cool and basically not worry about it so wasnt like lectured any cause they understand how things can get so staff helped alot so learned fast as on the job training went. still felt lucky was able to save and go into con and even with all the changes stil enjoyed the 4 days which was enough for me lol.

Same! I've done it on Sunday the last 2 years bc I'm honestly just too lazy to walk that far. I never complain that they only had XL bc that's on me for not getting my shirt earlier. (I worked the giveaway room on Sunday afternoon and soooo many people complained to me about their Legion shirts) I asked about how they had more this year and they said they brought more this year apparently.

Just to add more to show that you're ok, for me, I did a Tuesday pre-con shift and had nothing that would describe what I was about to do (no card). They checked me in at the desk by putting a check mark next to my name. At the location of the shift, after it ended, I signed out by writing down my name on a piece of paper. Just to be sure, I went back to the MMM the next day, because I didn't have anything unlike you did for your Wednesday shift. It was on file, so I was good. Overall, I had no card and it was on record. You had a card and it should be in their system. Again, you should be ok for next year. Now I did, however, got my Volunteer badge that Wednesday for the heck of it, and to get the shirt.

I thought the same thing too. I'm glad to volunteer shirt or not, and can't say no to a free shirt, but compared to all the great artwork we've gotten in years past, this year's was...very, very plain. I had been wondering why the volunteer shirt design wasn't revealed on the site before the convention (whereas in the past it had been)...and after going to pick up the shirt, I realized why. :P

LOL I must be the only person who was actually happy with the volunteer shirt this year! The minimalist design was a nice departure from the cartoony designs of previous years IMHO. I also like how the Comic-Con logo is prominently displayed.

Some character art would've been appreciated but I'm more of a Marvel guy than DC so I was fine not having another Batman/Superman shirt in my collection...but what I wouldn't give for an SDCC shirt featuring Spider-Man! I know it'll never happen but a guy can dream.

I guess they gotta go through red tape so to speak to use any character on a shirt. unless the label who owns that character and ask to have it on a shirt or sdcc has a theme and tries then it may never happen. but anything is possible for next year.

The only sizes left were XL and L, so that's what I said, but people would needle me for other sizes (as if I was hiding them lol). Legion was on Thursday, but you waited until Sunday so of course the smaller sizes are gone.

The GoT swag bags from the panel only had two shirt sizes as well.  L and XL, must be a trend.

Did everyone get the pin box before they got their shirts?  The volunteer shirt validation spot had a paper sign saying so, though I went on Sunday morning and my badge wasn't activated for that day.  But I tried going into the convention center anyway to pick up the box on Sunday and flashed red.  I just went and got the t-shirt after and didn't bother getting the extra pin box (already had one for my regular badge).

Last year was the only time I picked up my shirt but as a Star Trek/ Spock fan last year's shirt was a must have. This year since the design wasn't released I didn't make it over, with it being off site there was only so much walking my swollen feet/ ankles could handle.

Some above or last pages were not to thrilled about the volunteer design this year, but i guess some expect ea year to be an ok or awesome design to wanna wear and brag or watever lol. i happy i had chance volunteer since had been to con before in the past, so getting a shirt was cool since wasnt up to going donate blood and some was like vultures for free shirts at con lol. so much i noted that i tried to do but did have chance to visit some who i tried to see and grabbed any swag possible at time.

I got my pin box on Sunday. They weren't asking or checking for proof of volunteering, it just looked like they had tons of extras and were handing them out to whoever. I found that the box actually came in handy for storing all the other pins I'd acquired during SDCC.

I'll join you. I like the shirt too. I like more minimalist designs. I love last years Mr. Robot shirt because of that. It just has a little logo on the chest but is otherwise plain. On the other hand, I loved the Bladerunner offsite but the shirt I'm not to fond off. Too busy.

I volunteered, and also had an attendee badge.  I thought the additional boxes were for those picking up on site, and those who only volunteered.  I didn't know I could get another box.  I'm not unhappy with that.  I got a box as an attendee.  If I had known, however, I might have gone for an extra one.

Was a paper sign on the desk.  It would have been easy to try and get the pin box after my shift, since had to go back upstairs to return our green vests.

Pin box pick up was the same, up at Sails Pavilion.  Not sure if that was related to t-shirt validation though, as in wait 3 hrs after your shift to validate.

Last year, at volunteer check-in, I didn't get the extra WB bag, but I made sure to get one this year.

So volunteering, you could get WB bag+pin, lanyard, guide book, souvenir book, pin box (at Sails) and t-shirt (at Hyatt).

Which desk was the note on? The one at volunteer check in or at t-shirt pickup or ?

You know, it would all be so much easier if they just had everything in one spot. They had the bag, lanyard, guide book and souvenir book pickup right there at volunteer checkin. Why not have the box there as well? Either that or have us go to sails to pick up everything like anyone else picking up stuff onsite. Although in that case I would have missed out on everything since the person checking me in didn't tell me anything. I only got the bag and lanyard since I saw everyone else doing it.

I happen to see a table with couple workers behind it across from workers dealing with broken bags and some random people asking if was able to exchange for a not broken bag at time and just turned around after i by chance walked through the freebie table of misc flyers and saw boxes in a stack and just asked if was able to have one. saw no table with a sign that i know of but by chance was able to grab a box with goods inside.

In Sails, when I stopped by the boxes desk, the person there asked to see my volunteer badge, then gave me one.  As I think others have noted, they were handing boxes out left and right in Sails on Sunday.  I was there when they gave out the last box and they all cheered!

Which desk was the note on? The one at volunteer check in or at t-shirt pickup or ?

At the Marriott check-in, next to desk 42 booths. The booth had a hanging laminate that said T-shirt validation. At that counter was the note, though on Sunday the note was just laying there with broken tape.

Maybe next year we can hope for a special 2018 volunteer pin with a separate design!

I think maybe they didn't originally intend to give the badge boxes to volunteers, but ended up having extras--my supervisor in Sails on Sunday brought me one and told me they had too many. I think she said that the in-person badge pickup people hadn't been picking them up or something.

If volunteers wasnt supposed to get a box, then we got lucky i guess that they mass produced them by chance and thankfull to get one at time. i have learned at times u are given stuff or anything even if u dont expect it at time, which has happend alot sometimes. i just do what i can and say thanx or thank you to show i am happy to be given something at anytime. sometimes people dont even say anything and just take as if expected to get it at time.

I think next year I will go into the same mode for volunteering as I do on the floor. Which is I ask everyone and anyone "Can I have one of those?" ;)

I do have my vol badge..... I'll be sure to keep that with my real badge from this year
just in case

As long as your C-Card was given to your volunteer shift lead (which would have been given to him/her) by the department head who graded you after your shift, you're totally good to go.

The sups I had told me that the C-Card wasn't really necessary. They checked me in by asking for my name and said that even if they didn't get my C-Card that I was all set.

Well I'd need to know more detail of what happened. But the C-Card IS important. the department heads who you got placed with will grade your shift and then that goes into the system for the future.

When you say sups, I assume you mean supervisor, but who specifically are you referencing? You will have had a shift lead (the person who takes you to your actual volunteer job) or the department head, he/she is the one that you actually work for and gives you a grade onto the C-Card. Once that's done, the C-Cards are either delivered to the shift lead, or often as in the case with my department, delivered straight to the volunteer registration department.

My first time volunteering, they mention about the stars on back and i random checkd and as far as i know i always saw like 5 stars. i guessing if i ever really messed up i sure they tell u at time and by chance replace u before ur shift was done. but always did the whole time window so i guessing i done good ea day.

You did a pre-con shift, huh? Monday or Tuesday? Would explain a lot if so.

I did but I don't think that has anything to do with it. Since even on my last shift on Sunday they told me the same.

Ah, I see. Just wondering since they didn't have the system up for those two pre-con days, as you know already. Those days had no cards, no nothing so I can see this being true. I would still give them a card if I got one, though. I can see a mistake happening.

Oh I made sure to give my card to someone at some point during a shift.  Sometimes it was at the very start.  Sometimes it was at the very end.  Whether that someone was the appropriate person and what happened to it then, I have no idea since the person I started a shift with was not always the same person there at the end.

Yes, I saw the pre-con shift madness when I checked in.  Instead of looking something up on the computer, the checkin person had to go line up and ask someone physically looking through a printout.  I even commented to the person in line behind me that it's the 21st century so shouldn't all this be in the computer.

I made sure to give those in charge who had like a tan and con logo the card, then they walked away after i was told to explain what to do at time. then had to find them and give vest they forgot to take i guess cause was busy trying to replace workers at time. i guess u can give ur vest to any boss on the floor at time and just say u gave card to another and they forgot i guess to get vest but they who i gave it to said thanx for trying to return vest at time so all good.

Again, how it should have worked (based on my department) since I can't speak for every other department. When you show-up and are signed-in, your shift lead (the person who is carrying the hand sign) holds all the C-Cards. Then when you all show-up to the actual assignment itself, he/she hands the stack of C-Cards to the department head. Then he/she will grade you after your shift, and return them to volunteer registration. Again, this is the only system I personally know since I'm not in other departments, but I've been around a long time, and have never seen anything else.

As for pre-con shifts, that would answer the lack of a C-Card. But someone is being lazy or not doing their job fully if they're being lackadaisical with the C-Cards on Sunday. Doesn't matter which day of the Con, the C-Cards always matter. (Again, speaking about actual con shifts and not anything pre-con)

Was it me or did there seem to be fewer volunteers around in some areas this year?  There seemed to be fewer in line control for instance, outside many of the rooms.  Maybe I was just in the 'wrong places'...lol

My first time they seem to say they always needed volunteers as if there could never be enough. i noticed any at random walking around with a sign, at different posts or jobs, and whenever they took us around to replace anyone or to replace us at time of shift change. i tried to walk around so wasnt stuck inside all day every day i was able to go and all. they may have had more cause i know i saw alot first day checked in for a job, and when i went to check in before i left for the nite to come back the next day to just check in to be ready to work at time. so not really sure how many they had for the whole event cause didnt do pre con, and just did thurs to sun so may have been alot more but not sure exactly how many did for the whole week.

I wonder if that had a bit to do with having already shown up for a shift previously, in which I'd guess Sunday's C-card validation, which affects next year's Priority Registration eligibility, really not necessary?  Were you able to get a second t-shirt?

At Saturday's job, our shift leader took our cards, then left. After our assignment, we had an honor system where we were just expected to return our green vests.  At t-shirt validation on Sunday, I think they were being polite and asking me how my assignment was and where did I work.  For a second, I thought maybe they hadn't actually inputted the C-cards at that point or he was just making sure I was the same badge holder!

I didn't see a lot of line control volunteers along the marina on Friday morning, compared to last year.

I not sure exactly what day but i noticed as i walked along the back of con i saw like 2 different lines and at random i guess it was volunteers holding signs at times. as i think more, it was sat or sun since the first days i was in front hanging out to side as every else was standing waiting to get in and all. so i decided to look around more outside before it opend as a change of pace. got some random pics at times outside while walking around. then decided to walk around back for a change and saw the lines all along the back marina then before u went inside there was the tent set up closer to the doors. so was some random volunteers in back but not really sure how many at time. sux they dont have anyone to police any line cutters to where it feels like forever to get in . i so glad i dont wait in line except to get in by chance lol. but where i was at , had chance to chat some or hear some chat about stuff and meet some new con goers to SDCC. so was cool.

In the shifts I worked, there were too many volunteers.  In one shift, they doubled us up where we were posted where normally only one person would stand.  In another, most people ended up sitting on the floor off to the side waiting for their shift to end.  When I got there, I asked a guy from a previous shift what he had been doing.  He said he had been sitting there his entire shift.

Could be.  I don't have any idea how volunteering works behind the scene.  I didn't try to get another shirt since I already had gotten one from my pre con shift.

That happens to me when I volunteer sometimes.  There's a chance it can be a busy, active shift, but other times, it can be dull due to lack of work or proper work delegation.

One veteran staffer from one of the departments I was assigned to explained this to me once: The departments may request a certain number of attendee/daily volunteers from the Volunteers Department, but the volunteer shift system may or may not have updated designations for how many volunteers are needed for that one shift in a specific department.  Sometimes, it means that you'll have too many volunteers for a shift somewhere and too few elsewhere.  It was interesting information.  Makes you curious to know more.  Hm...

I had that happen to me one time during comic con this year being partnered with another by chance, guess cause they to rotate help and i guess have more then need sometime depends on when one started and u got do 3 hrs unless they replace u early for any reason at time. once i was like even a shadow to one the floor bosses by chance and learn job which was pretty easy in ways but still made sure to shadow and help since i was like on shift on the clock so to speak so shadowed / followed and then chilled in areas to try stay out of way and help at same time. so i guess any given day they have more help then needed for any reason and need to see how many they really need for any given job for 3 hr time and all. some i guess had reg badge by chance and also volunteer chance so was able to be at con all week and so u get extra help at times. guess they always like to have the help , but sometimes have too much and partner u with others and learn along the way. but hope to do again next year and many more ahead.

Out of curiosity, since CCI updated some things today -- mainly the return reg. stuff to say if you are good for it, which I am -- in the volunteer area, everyone (well, fellow volunteers), your end has it saying that the program is full for 2017, right? No more green check for now? I know that part will be updated later on for 2018, and I also know that this is a silly thing to worry about, just I am so used to seeing that green check for that section. It is throwing me off. lol I did my one shift so I know I am good, just double checking. Nothing more.

I'm seeing the same thing.  This was my first year volunteering, so I don't know for sure, but I'm assuming there is nothing to worry about.

If anything and u made sure that u get all emails they send u, to check the account at random if u want. i know sometimes we try to get a jump on things for ea year early so not miss bus so to speak. u can check the log in area once a week or once a month besides be aware fo any email. i volunteerd first time myself and do again if can, since it one way to save even if they say to try get a reg badge but i know i didnt get one for reg so i check at open reg and chances are less so volunteer i go lol. i was lucky to not have to fry in sun since was able do same job ea day thankfully. hope i can stay inside again next year but i know it not guaranteed, but can hope and pray it possible.
