Changes to Terms and Conditions
« on: May 23, 2012, 12:30:09 PM »
Just got this email. Kinda cryptic.

Dear Comic-Con Attendees,

The Comic-Con Terms and Conditions have been updated as follows:

Comic-Con International may perform any of the following validation of badges on entry to any area of the convention. These measures are an effort to prevent illegal badge duplication and unauthorized reselling. We may scan the bar code, require a photo ID that matches the name on the badge, scan RFID embedded in the badge, and examine the badge with other technological and/or physical methods to verify authenticity of the badge and holder. Before leaving any registration area please make sure that the name on the badge matches your identification.

I just got this email too. It seems as if they want to be a little more thorough about checking validity of badgesInteresting that they might be checking photo ID. That would create long lines at entry, but really cut down on scalpers.

I get the impression they would not be doing the Badge and Photo I.D. match-ups every time you enter the building. It sounds like it will be a spot check system. Similar to the checks they do on public transit.

But if I'm wrong about this, and they are planning to do these checks more frequently at entry points, it is indeed going to slow things down considerably. More nerd rage!

We got the email too, and weren't sure what to make of it. My husband guesses it means random checks at the door.

Freeing up more staff/manpower and technology that would have been allocated to pre-registration and have these resources be used for roaming various locations and for verifying badges is one way to hypothesize why this traditional service (i.e., pre-reg) is no longer available on-site. Pure conjecture, of course.

Random badge checks? Nerd profiling!

Glad to see this message being put out there as well as the steps taken this year with the Member ID to help cut back on scalpers. It might not prevent it completely but at least will give them an extra hurdle. And while I understand the need for some people to do whatever it takes to go, this will hopefully also make it more difficult for the people trying to buy from scalpers as they are only making it more difficult to obtain legit badges.

I hope the extra measures will prevent that idiot who was bragging on the FB CCI page that he had snuck into the con multiple times over the years from getting in.  ;D

Argh!  I was trying to come up with that joke and you beat me to it.   Curses!  ::Shakes fist at sky::

Nerd profiling = if someone does not look like enough of a nerd, they're going to pull them aside?  I be sure to put tape on my glasses and wear highwaters.

I believe that the RF ID tags in the badges is new.

Based on Alyssa's suggestion (the vid from the site she recommended being ), I went ahead and bought my RFID billfold and RFID passport wallet given the level of access these RFID scanners are able to achieve. The staff-members who have access to RFID tech are trustworthy I'm hoping, but the opportunity for malice is there. It's easy pickings for what Mulder and Scully call persons in-the-know who act "to deceive, inveigle, and obfuscate."
