Title: Southwest Flights for SDCC 2020 Available
Post by: DaveG on December 11, 2019, 06:34:38 AM
Not sure exactly when, but sometime over the last two hours they opened up the July dates for booking Southwest flights.

Already checking the schedule LOL

So it's not just me.   :)

I started checking all airfares yesterday.  My first plan is to check dates earlier than the Con.  It gives me a base line.  I can see the airlines and/or travel sites looking at how many queries are done for specific dates, and adjusting their prices accordingly.  It's just a theory of mine.  It's what I would do if I was in that business.   :)

Just booked my flights for SDCC! Thank goodness they still have the sale going on. I was able to get a round trip flight from SF to SD for $180.

That seems expensive...I just booked it from SJC for $118  :o

I see SJC flights on Tuesday for $54.

Might have to jump on board that.

Well technically I had cheaper options but I just chose the times that were convenient for me.

But I think in general, I feel like Southwest deals from SF to SD haven't been that great for me during the past Comic-Cons so I thought the ticket prices that I saw were pretty great compared to the previous years. At least I can always rebook my flight if the prices go down and I can get credit for the difference.  ^-^

I just booked some flights this morning and they were kind of pricey. But then, there aren't a lot of options and everything is pricey now...

Bought my tickets this morning and they were up a little, but not too different from what I've seen in the past.  Was a little surprised how quickly some flights were filling up.  One flight indicated there was only 1 ticket left.

Right, going to NYC is always higher on Southwest than other airlines.  It was a big factor in deciding to give up NYCC.  I find going east Delta is better.

Only 1 ticket left at that price. There are probably plenty of seats left, but prices will rise as more seats are filled.

I got my airfare for $305.  That is about average.

I'll be stalking though I would like to take the flight earlier in the morning if the price goes down.

Ahh...that makes sense. Yes, I have noticed that Southwest usually has better flights out of SJC (and OAK) than SFO. I'm doing Wednesday to Monday and when I checked yesterday, nearly all Wednesday flights were $54. Monday night had a couple that were $64 (which I got) but the earlier ones were higher.

Ugh I wish I logged in sooner to see what those prices were on Dec Dec 13. I just booked my one way to get there at $189. My return flight is still kinda pricey. Hoping that it will go down, but I think that's wishful thinking. As far as I know once those prices on southwest say 1 ticket remaining, they will most likely raise the prices to the next range.

Was there a sale going on when they released the dates?

Yes and no. If someone buys it right away it will go up, but after some time, a different round of prices may kick in which could lower it.

We got ours $280 for a round trip from DFW Tuesday to Monday. I feel like thats a decent flight price. we leave at like 11:55 local time on Tuesday and leave at 4p on Monday. Much better than the trying to leave out super late on Tuesday and then have to fly super early or late on Monday back home.

Just got my Southwest tickets this weekend also. Arriving early Tuesday afternoon (so I can enjoy some of San Diego before attending preview night) and leaving the following Tuesday. So jealous of all of you who are so close to San Diego. I’m Traveling almost 1600 miles just to get there so 3200 miles round trip. Hopefully no flight delays this time unlike last years flights. Everyone of my flights got delayed somewhat, but not that bad considering.

I hope it doesn't become a problem, but Boeing has said that the 737 Max Q may not fly again through the summer.  Airlines have been cancelling flights every time that date gets pushed back since they don't have the inventory to service all those flights.  Southwest has the most 737 Max Qs of any airline.  I think right now the Max Q has been taken out of scheduling through June.

Max 8, actually.

I ran into this issue last year when I went to SLC. They canceled my flights so I had to rebook with a different airline but I did get a couple months advance notice. They weren't originally Max 8 flights, but I guess SJC to SLC is not that popular of a route so they cancelled those in order to move the aircraft to a different flight.

My wife and I will probably book our flights this weekend as rates are currently reasonable. In years past, we always waited until our hotel situation was confirmed and that always burned us.

If it makes you feel better, confirm your hotel situation right now with a cancelable backup reservation in Mission Valley. Obviously that's not ideal, but at least you'll know that you will have somewhere to stay.

Title: Re: Southwest Flights for SDCC 2020 Available

The good news is that right now Southwest appears to be waiving the difference in fares if you change a flight departing between roughly June to August.  They do this periodically.  So if there is a flight between two city pairs where the price is different, you can book the cheaper flight and then change it to a more expensive flight at no cost.  So if there is a flight that costs $100 because it leaves at 4am and another that costs $200 to leave at 10am, you can book the $100 flight leaving at 4am and then turn around and change it to the more expensive flight leaving at 10am at no additional cost.  Or you can book a cheaper flight on Wednesday and then change it to a more expensive flight on Friday as long as the date change is either 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the original date.  This also works for switching airports within the same metro area.  So book a flight out of Oakland because it's cheaper and then switch it to a flight leaving SFO.

This is all unadvertised and if you speak to a rep they will probably know nothing about it.  Southwest does this from time to time online.  Because it's unadvertised who knows when it ends.  It also doesn't always work.  So it's not a good idea to do unless you are happy to stick with the cheaper flight.  But if you have already booked a flight, it doesn't hurt to see if you can change it to a better flight at no additional cost.

So, silly question with reading here that some folks have to change flights.  My schedule showed a MAX on the way home, but now today, it doesn't.  So I didn't have to change anything it seems.

I guess I don't know how you see the plane or know you need to change your flight.  DO they notify you?  They are still selling tickets for my flight so I assume I am good?

Okay found out all my flights are on a 737, however, all the flights from Denver including those with stops are on 737.  I can't imagine they just aren't going to San Diego so I wonder if they are canceling those or some of those flights will change planes.

The reservation details shows the scheduled aircraft.  Mine had MAX a couple days ago, no longer now.

I have 2 big trips (4 flights) booked on Southwest this summer (neither of which are SDCC). Both of them got emails yesterday saying that the flights had been changed. 2 of them were small differences (5 and 10 minute changes in departure times), one was just a change in flight number, but one was a massive change. Instead of a one stop (no plane change) flight leaving at 4:50 pm, we were now on a two-stop (no plane change) flight that took an extra 3 hours of travel time and left at 10:05 am. This threw off our entire travel itinerary. My husband and I decided to split, so we wanted to each move to different flights. I called up Southwest last night and the rep was able to switch everything for me, no charge, on the phone, even though I had booked it all online and had a companion ticket on my flight. My husband's flight was actually $15 cheaper than what we paid when we booked it, so they refunded the difference to our credit card (rather than making it a Southwest credit).

I was very  happy with the customer service on this. If anyone has even the slightest change in their flights, I highly recommend calling Southwest and getting what you want. Just search up your desired flights online first and then let them know.

Southwest is the best! I too have been able to get them to refund me the difference for a flight change and it was a really easy and pleasant experience!

If people want to buy a cheap call option on the viability of future travel, roundtrip flights between LA and Miami are now about $40-$50.  Most of that price is taxes.  The airlines are giving away seats in the hopes of staying functional.

I just got credit for Southwest. Only $5, but still. Though at this rate,  I may not be able to use any of my flight credits from Southwest this year. But at least I've been able to recycle the credits as necessary...so if nothing happens I'm only out two max, rather than for all 4-5 events I was going to had I booked separately.

I have tickets for may to San Jose, before all this happened, my friend and I had plans to go up to visit friends for memorial day. Needless to say, when prices tanked, I got credits on the flights for the new prices.

We're not expecting to use them now obviously, but hopefully it's sdcc is canceled things have calmed down enough to travel and we can use it then. No idea though   :-\

I officially have $758 in travel funds from canceled due to 4 trips being canceled, none of my travel funds have moved to the new expiration date so I suspect I will have to call them.  They did say gove them time though so I can wait a week or two more.

I also just rebooked my flight to SD for $70 less.

So at least when we can travel I will have the airfare covered!

Also if it won't let you change your flight to the cheaper rate, cancel the flight then rebook using those travel funds.

I had one way booked with points, another with money. The points were refunded as points, the other was refunded as a travel credit.

This is an email from SW that I got earlier this week:

 To our valued Customers,

As we continue to navigate our way through this unprecedented time and deal with extraordinary challenges, we are committed to keeping you informed and updated on the steps we are taking to manage through the COVID-19 pandemic. The health, Safety, and well-being of our Customers and our Employees remain my highest priorities at all times and a responsibility the entire Southwest® Family holds sacred. In this midst of the heartbreak and hardships this crisis has imposed on our neighbors, our families, and our friends, I am also inspired and deeply moved by the compassion, resiliency, and the human spirit that has surfaced all around us. Thank you for being there with us. We are here for you.

We've been working around the clock to adapt to this new landscape, to adjust our procedures and policies to take care of our Customers, keep our operation running, and maintain a clean and comfortable cabin environment. I know many of our Customers have questions and concerns regarding your travel funds and tier status. We previously extended travel funds that are impacted due to the pandemic to give you more time to use them. I'm pleased to report that we are making some additional changes:

Tier Status & Companion Pass Benefits:
•

For our current A-List and A-List Preferred Members, we are extending your current earned status through December 31, 2021.
•

For our current Companion Pass Members, we are extending your current earned Companion Pass benefits through June 30, 2021.
•

For all Rapid Rewards® Members, we recognize that your normal flying behavior has been interrupted, limiting progress you may have been making toward qualification for A-List, A-List Preferred, and Companion Pass. For that reason, we are giving all Rapid Rewards Members a "boost" of 15,000 tier qualifying points and 10 flight credits toward A-List and A-List Preferred status, and 25,000 Companion Pass qualifying points and 25 flight credits toward Companion Pass status.

These moves represent additional ways to either work toward or to use these benefits once you're ready to begin traveling again. These adjustments will happen automatically and will be reflected in your Southwest Rapid Rewards My Account page over the coming weeks. Learn more on the extension and the boost by visiting Southwest.com/RRcoronavirusupdates.

Travel Funds:
•

Previously, Customers' travel funds that have expired or would have expired between March 1 - June 30, 2020, or travel funds that were created because of a cancellation between March 1 - June 30, 2020, had an expiration date of June 30, 2021. We are now expanding the window of funds eligible for extended expiration dates and extending the expiration date of these funds. Funds that are set to expire or funds that are created between March 1, 2020 and September 7, 2020, will have an expiration date of September 7, 2022. This gives Customers who had travel funds created in connection with this pandemic–or who won't be comfortable traveling this summer–additional time to retake that same trip or explore a different destination. It will take our Technology Team a few days to make these changes and more details on this extension can be found at Southwest.com/RRcoronavirusupdates.
•

Additionally, we have added a new benefit for our valued Rapid Rewards Members. Those Members who have travel funds that are set to expire or funds that are created between March 1, 2020 and September 7, 2020 will have the option to convert those travel funds into Rapid Rewards® points at the same rate you would be able to purchase a ticket with points today. We hope this provides our Members ultimate flexibility as Rapid Rewards points never expire, never have cancel or change fees (fare difference may apply), and you can redeem your points for anyone you choose. Our Technology Team is working to build this conversion capability, and we will be in touch when it is ready for you to use. In the meantime, you don't need to take any action - your travel funds will be automatically extended for the two years mentioned above, and you will be able to make this conversion once we bring this new functionality to fruition.

We ask for your patience as we implement these benefits and new exceptions. It's our hope that the policy changes above bring you more comfort and confidence that we will be here, ready to serve you, when you're ready to travel.

In addition to the changes we have made to our policies, we're continuing to modify the way we operate and serve you—from enhanced cleaning procedures, social distancing guidelines, onboard service offerings to limit personal contact, providing more Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for our Employees, and much more. You can learn about these efforts on our Travel Advisory and our Company Blog.

No doubt, this has been an incredibly challenging environment for us all, but we've been uplifted and found special meaning in the term "essential travel." From transporting medical professionals to hospitals and hotspots around the country, to partnering with organizations to ship important cargo and medical supplies, to serving Customers on their way to see loved ones and lend a helping hand—there is so much good that has filled our hearts with pride—every day on every flight.

Today and every day, we're committed to reconnecting you to the people and places you love. We're in this together. Thank you for your patience as we navigate through these changing times.

Stay Heart Strong,

With the CCI cancellation announcement I wonder how flights will be handled for a date so far out.  I booked mine on points, but I don't want to lose them.  I would think SW would be accommodating...
I just cancelled my United flights. They are doing no cancellation or rebooking fees and 24 months to use the credits.

Called Southwest and canceled my flights and instead of my travel credit expiring in Dec 2020, it now expires in Sept 2022.  :)

I noticed today half of mine say 2022 and the others don't.  Ugh, I am going to have to call.

I called today and they told me that all cancellations would result in a credit good through September 2022.  They told me that it may initially say December 2020, but that their programmers are updating the expiration date in batches, so it could take a little while.

Thank you for the updated information I will give it a week then, to see if they get them all updated.

The one I canceled today says Oct 12th.  Are you guys just saying December because you booked in December?

Sorry, yes.  The prior rule was 12 months from the date you booked your flight.  So, last year I booked on December 10th and normally would have had to use my credit by December 10th of this year.

Same here.  When they refunded it on Monday, it still said December of this year.  But as of this morning it is changed to Sep 7th 2022.  It's good to know when you talk to someone in customer service that they are really informed as to what is going on and it turns out what they say actually happens.

The normal credit expiration for airlines is 1 year.  The fact that the are changing that to fall of 2022 says they don't think anyone will be able to fly until 2022.

But others aren't as lucky as those of us that have gotten the 2022 extension. Some are getting an extension only until June 30 2021. Or you have some questioning why aren't flights before March 7 and after Sept 7 2020 aren't getting extended.

The way I understand it, if your travel credit was expiring between March 1st and May 31st of 2020 then that credit is now extended out another year to June 30th, 2021.  These are credits for flights there were cancelled up to a year ago and were about to expire.  New credits for flights being cancelled now will expire on September 7th, 2022.

So it's not a matter of luck, it's two different extensions.  One for credits that were about to expire and another for credits being created due to new cancellations.

Yes, I know that, however, I had a flight I had changed when it was a lower price.  They had two different dates on them.  It was a legitimate question since the people I was conversing with both had December.  They answered me though and we all got on the same page!
